Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I only want to draw man-made objects, why do always post figure references?
>>
>>2832110
drawing is copying arbitrary abstract lines and values from a reference or imagination onto paper, why does it matter what you use to learn since you will be able to make any object when you are good anyway?

I've been always wondering why so many beginners wanna start with drawing people instead of something less complex, still life

Learning how to draw one thing can really help with being able to draw another.

I don't remember the exact quote, but the gist of it is, The human body is similar to a cathedral, because they share basic perspective and construction.

Do not think of bad drawings as a failure, but as a step to becoming the artist you are meant to be. Just accept that you will make bad drawings, but know, that you will improve if you keep at it.

Make sure to take breaks every hour or so. Your body is still a body no matter what /ic/ tells you it needs rest.

What really helps for me is when I know something is wrong but can't see it anymore to just walk away for a good chunk of time (a few hours to a day) and come back to it and I usually understand more. Shine is created via contrast, tone the surrounding area and clear erase the highlights. I'd also recommend exploring values and shading more, rather than just going after form.

Look at the reflection of your drawing through a mirror, that will help.

Perhaps you should star practicing with black and white charcoal and gray tone paper. The paper and charcoal should be about 30 bucks at an art store. I think you will find starting with a mid-tone will make it easier to express the shading.

Yeah, some what.
You won't be as good as someone who's been doing art for a while like 10+ years.
But you can probably improve enough to be their 1-3 years level.
Here's a bit of an idea of what can be achieved in a year, not too shabby in my opinion.
>>
>>2833503
Are you implying this person was working for 12 hours every day of the year with clear goals and a structurized roadmap for 5 years?
>>
>>2833510
No.
Where did you get that idea?
>>
>>2833515
I misunderstood your post then, sorry. Could you clarify what exactly you mean in that picture by what can be achieved in a year?
>>
>>2833524
Really? I mean, I guess?
From 2007 to 2008, they improved, and then from 2008 to 2009, they improved again. The difference between this year and that year is how much improvement can be achieved in a year.

Aside from that, do you think you need to put in 12 hours every single day and have clear goals and a structured road map for 5 years, anon? Because that's just not true. Art has twists and turns all over the place. You may not always need to spend 12 hours, but five to six is a good amount. The closer you get to eight, the better. Anymore and art may take over your life and break you. So, you definitely need to take breaks and also have some other hobby or something on the side to relieve the stress and take your mind off of art. This stuff is just way too stressful to be doing constantly day by day for 12 hours. You'll kill yourself. Don't even worry about clear goals, as long as you're drawing and getting better, that's already good. If you experiment and have fun, time won't even matter because you'll just naturally get to the point you want to be at.
>>
>>2833529
I see. I do have a hobby actually, that is I go out mountain(more like wall) climbing every other day. I also wanted to start playing some instrument at some point. Do you really think there's more harm than good to drawing more than 8 hours per day?
>>
>>2833543
I do, but don't let me make the decision for you. You can try it out and see how it goes.
>>
>>2833562
Alright, thanks anon. I'll probably do as you say and draw as long as I have fun doing it, without intentionally stressing myself. Maybe that could be even more than 12 hours.

I'm doing drawabox.com and i'm at the 3d box part. it's much harder than i thought, even with the guidelines, i'm finding them kinda wonky.

the next exercise is doing it without the guidelines and i just literally cannot seem to do that. this is the stuff that i've struggled with for awhile and tried to just push through it and draw things for fun, so i really want to improve on it. how long is reasonable for me to spend on this?
>>
>>2833980
its fine, it looks wonky because the VP are too close
>>
didn't drawabox use to have a large section on humans? or am i crazy?
where'd it go
>>
>>2833987
ah well, i'll make it further away next time. and as simple as the idea of just not drawing the guidelines and trying to guesstimate it seems, i can't get my head around it.

i figure if i do enough pages of practice like this, i'll figure it out?
>>
>>2833980
Assuming those corners are supposed to be 90 degrees corners, than those are wrong. 90 degrees corners in perspective should never be acute. They become exactly 90 degrees in perspective when the viewer is standing right above the corner, and obtuse when the corner is away from the viewer. But no matter where you put a right angled corner, the right angle will never be acute.
>>
>>2833993
the lesson says draw a straight line, then draw a line from each of the top and bottom to the vp, then draw the other straight lines...it never mentions 90 degrees corners.

honestly, i feel really dumb because i don't really get what you're saying.
>>
>>2833989
Hello, I'm up to the same part as you. The site says to make use of ghosting, which if I remember is essentially hovering your pencil back and forth (but not actually drawing anything) across a line you want to draw. I've been doing that between my vertical line's point and the vanishing point, but only putting pen to paper for part of the line, the part that connects to my box.
I've included my own, maybe it'll help you.
I've explained this really, really badly, I'm sorry. I'm sure once we get this stuff down it'll be a lot more fun, too.

>>2833996
The site hasn't mentioned anything about the possibility of vanishing points being too close yet, so I didn't know that either.
>>
>>2834000
i will give it a try. thanks.
>>

They're still there if you put in the lesson number at the end of the url, ie. http://drawabox.com/lesson/9. He removed them from the usual place because he feels they weren't up to par with the rest of the lessons that he has been fine tuning and will be updating them eventually.

There's something wrong with the nose particularly, any critique much appreciated

>>2834026
Your drawing is very line-dependent, try to capture forms with light and shadow rather than lines. The reference has rounder eyes with more pronounced lids, a less prominent jaw, and a less rectangular head.

>>2834133
The neck is very slim and the eyes are very large for photorealism. The head should measure roughly 5 eyes in width. The top of the head lacks volume - I think the photo might have been taken at a low angle

>>2834300
Photo studies are an invaluable part of learning art. You don't need to use references for everything you draw, but you will find it difficult to improve if you don't study from photos/life once in a while

It might be better if at first you posted drawings in pencil only, as it's easier to actually see your "hand" and give advice that way.
The drawing isn't bad altogether, but there are some things that are off, like his fringe being kind of stuck the the rest of his hair, the eyes are different in size, on the photo reference his head is tilted to the right a bit more, general things like that.
Other than that I think your on a good path. Practice more, post more, you'll make it.

Anon, you can use whatever resource as long as it helps YOU understand the material. You could look at anime all day for torsos, but what matters is whether or not you actually have tried to draw it and improve upon it. All the resources in the world don't matter if you aren't drawing, so draw with this and see how it goes.

Really, not sure what your problem is with torsos anyways. This image doesn't seem to demonstrate anything difficult about it. What was hard about it to me was what connected the hip and the ribs.

>>
>>2835300
There are many free torrents for anatomical books in the bookthread.

In many cases, tutorials are not really needed. They can have some tips and tricks here and there but what will really get it through to you is the baseline understanding of how a body part works. This involves drawing/painting studies of it from as many angles as you can and internalizing the function of it in different angles, foreshortened, or otherwise. Remember to simplify things until they're small enough to handle and work with. Don't expect to be hand held so often (especially on this board). Just draw and you'll be fine.
>>
>>2835302

Addendum: Didn't have an eraser for the sketches on lined paper which is why construction's still in there

Majority of the sketches are women because most of the images I had on my HDD for study were porn, everything else is from DVD covers or a Dragon's Dogma artbook .pdf I found

>>2835305

I was working at /making it/ for 3 months or so until I started University and dropped it to focus on that, then I had an accident that made me have to drop Uni so I've started sketching again to pass the time. If you want advice I'd just say spend free time sketching, occasionally read theory and don't burn yourself out
>>
>>2835299
There are no rules. Do what you want. But if you're telling me that you literally just read the sticky then you're so far low a level of skill that tutorials like that will do next to nothing for you when compared to learning from life.

What's the difference between drawing as a hobby and drawing for a realistic aim
>>
>>2835336
The former is for fun, the latter is all about going through crazy amounts of stress just to be able to draw something small.
>>
>>2835336
Are you trying to imply that "hobbyism" is a style if you're comparing it to "realistic aim?" I'm not quite sure.

In that case if you're making 5-minute doodles every couple days on MSpaint literally nothing matters. As long as you're having fun (which most of this board has forgotten in the quest to get good) that's all that matters.

>In that case if you're making 5-minute doodles every couple days on MSpaint literally nothing matters.
Yes, the last drawing I made was the bird from Wadanohara but I tried my best to capture the character's on model appearance.

and I also drew this picture of Homura a few days ago, I was inspired by this goofy madoka video and it gave me an idea of what to draw but im not sure it's good enough to warrant talent or recognition.

Composition is good, back ground is a good color too, meshes well with her color scheme. Proportions are in control. You should draw some more, I want to see you grow.

Is it important to know the skeletal structure first before moving on to figures?

thank you, i really try my best to learn. I just wish my inpatient-ness doesn't make me lash out on other people, discouraging them from befriending me and such im sure they won't have time to help, that's why i was trying to learn how draw torsos from that osaka drawing but it seemed flawed by the people here. Or I just don't know how to draw bodies yet outside of freehanding it. Most of my drawings are free hand but sometimes I'll start out with a shape.
>>
>>2835364
just some basics, general shape of the skull, the ribcage, leg and arm bones, pelvis is enough
>>

not same anon, but u need to focus on relative values. dont smudge until u know how to control your pencil pressure. why is the reflected light basically the same value as the highlight/theres no indication of the form because of your giant dark terminator which shouldn't be darker than the cast shadow. try again with a focus on values, edges, and control because you are just being way too messy. maybe render an egg from life instead
>>
>>2835155
is this your painting? dont keep polishing it, it's a turd because of composition and if it's a study then stop it and do something else, but if u were to keep drawing it, fix your materials. everything is painted the same. theres no indication of how shiny the glasses are/hair skin and clothes look the same and the head is just floating in space because of no defined foreground/background
>>
>find it easier to draw from life than to draw from anime
What does this mean? Why is it so hard to draw anime but drawing realistically is a lot easier?

true, what about now
>>

middle because you ruined it with your linework and coloring, it looks dead, also learn how the hair and neck will attach to the skull, the drawing is not in right perspective, you have parts of it facing front and parts going 3/4, choose one, it's fucking your drawing -> eyelids, nose, and mouth don't look right because of it and no it's not because of the different face shape or expression as much as how you drew it.

>>2835419
pretty good, work on not simply tracing over your roughs though but rather thinking of how a form would work - theres issues with areas because you didn't draw through: neck, arms, on left girl and it looks completely flat, the right girls legs look like stubs and ears dont connect, also the hands don't show any depth/bone structure. overall pretty good attempt but your line work kills the forms

np dude, i have some other suggestions: learn about line of action/do a lot of gesture drawings to learn about where the figures weight is going to be and you can define the lines based on that or whats closer/further if that makes any sense? like i said before to work on defining form but combined that with sense of gesture you will have a really good drawing, i believe in you

Learn to draw basic forms and then how to construct more complex 3-dimensional forms from that. Once you've got that down, study the skull and facial features

Tried to do it with pencils only this time

Right eye is fucked.
Really hard for me to "understand" values, it's like i see them, but don't know who to apply them...

What do you think guys ?

How do I study values?

This alone took hours to do with the ref. Is there a systematic way to internalize values than just hoping that after observing and copying still lives for lengthy amounts of time you'll just get it?
>>
>>2837086
Do a lot of them and then attempt to do them from memory. Also do them in your own pieces. Can you manage to do multiple objects in value all with the same lighting?
