A Thread A Day

Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

So guys, how should I draw when drawing from reference? Is better to keep the photo on the monitor while sketching on my paper or it's better to draw on my graphic monitor keeping the photo and the drawing perfectly aligned so it's easier to compare them?

I just started drawing a month ago and I know its bad, but I can't seem to understand how to properly draw African Americans using just a mechanical pencil, rendering seems much harder. Besides that, I know the neck is not wide enough, and the chin is a bit too stubby, not even mentioning hair.
>>
>>2829152
Here's the key. Their jaw, nose, and forehead are a bit more ape-ish than whites.
>>
>>2829031
Thats all that matters. Just keep going at it and don`t be afraid to do something you haven`t done before. You`ll get better and maybe even git gut
>>
>>2829092
HAHAHAHAHAHA
>>
>>2829152
the eyes are way too high. Look up some face structure, the eyes are suprisingly low. I woulld also lower the mouth and the nose, for the hair definitely don`t make lines where they should be(line between the face and the hair, hairline basicaly) also look more at how the head connects to the neck. You shouldn`t really think about drawing an african american, just think about drawing someone with distinctive facial features. African american people do have shared facial features but you shouldn`t have that as a base when drawing people. Just keep going at it.

put aside construction and face for a while. Read keys to drawing or that other book. Top post have the link or the sticky.

Start with simple stuff then slowly move on to face. Face is really hard. Not only is it complex but because everyone know what a face looks like a minor shift of features proportions and position will look off. Unless it's deliberately stylize.

I'm beginner but even me know this: If you just draw mindlessy you won't get anywhere. You need to understand what you are doing, bro.

Search methods that work for you. For example, on drawing heads I used loomis books, bridgman, then watched proko videos and downloaded a lot of shady PDFs in russian teaching how draw heads until I finally found Ron Lemen's portrait videos and reilly method and finally it clicked with me. I struggled for months until I found something that worked for me. I wish I could show you, but I don't have a camera and I'm full tradicional ATM.

Now I'm doing the same with body anatomy.

Also, no matter what level you are or what you learning, I would recommend bargue. Do bargue course. It helped me to get to the next level. Even if I still low level, hahaha.

I believe in you anon, don't give up!

I used to draw a lot when I was a kid but stopped after getting my PS2, I wanna go back to drawing since I'm studying graphic design and drawing skills are helpful.

Something I've been working on today.

I drew the bear quick from photo reference, rest from imagination. Originally had the guy leaning a bit backwards with his sword out, but it looked too relaxed and awkward. Trying to twist his torso from the sitting position and having a hard time figuring out how it should look.

Any advice?

>>
>>2829708
Get yourself some big marker or even chalk or some shit like that , then just work with your shoulder and try to have some flow. Dont think too much about the figure, dont actually think at all, just make flouwy lines, because all your lines just look so stiff.
>>
>>2830167
main issue is that the lips are too big, you horrible horrible racist
>>
>>2830425
Not bad. Symbol drawing on the eye, bottom lip is at an angle to top lip, back of head cut off, try to figure out form more instead of restating multiple times each profile line which makes it harder to critique.

It just means pay more attention to the subject rather than your paper that contains no information. Stop worrying about your lines because you're a beginner and just try to make it look like the object no matter how messy.

Chicken-scratching. You really need to tackle that before moving on. It's not the main problem, but it'll fester if you don't consciously try to avoid it.

Gesture definition
A gesture drawing is the representation of the essence of an object’s or figure’s position. It is the act of creating a drawing or sketch with a loose grip and movement of the drawing tool used. Gesture drawings are often very expressive and allow one the freedom to loosen up and not worry about small details.

you are supposed to only attempt to capture the pose, not the proportion and correct form also. i think it might be useful for you to look at villpu and proko's style of gesture and see how they differ from a regular figure drawing.

also your line quality is abysmal.

in my opinion it means that it is a tool to quicky lay down the basic proportions and relations of your drawing, so you wont get bugged down by details too early and start defining something that is wrong in its essence

Eyes should be shaped like pears.
The space between both eyes are one eye's length.
Nose looks like shit because you used those lines which you don't normally see because of light.
Also you left in your construction lines for some reason. Erase that stuff so you can clean it up.
The length between the side of the head and the eye is a little less than one eye's length too.
Anyways, everything looks like crap because mainly of your eyes. An anon once told me that the eyes are the essence of portraits. If you can capture the eyes correctly, everything else will follow.
>>
Do I really need to make that glass window thing in Keys to Drawing? Does it help?
>>
>>2831585
use the tools and practices they talk about in keys to drawing and observational draw anything you want with those tools. There isn't a golden exercise that is gonna make you good in drawing. Although there are exercises that challenge you more or less to use the concepts they talk about in the book, so you get familiar with them. But if I were you I would just draw anything you want from life for now, until you get a bit good with the techniques.

/beg/, I'm in doubt. I found an anatomy book with a construction method that work for me but it's not loomis, vilppu or hampton. It's Alan Lathwell's Draw Warriors and Heroes. I really like it and it really clicked with me. But I'm afraid I'll miss something important if I study by his book because I never heard nobody talking about him. I'm afraid that one day I look back and this will be a mistake like when I got anime books as a teenager.

I know it's silly but I want to know you guys think. Pic related, it's his work. You can also google if you curious about his skills.

Forgive my english, I usually don't write that much in english.
>>
>>2831439
This is great to know, in fact it kinda inspires me to draw... thank you anon.
>>
>>2831662
You can't go wrong with anatomy since it comes from life. It's like drawing a circle wrong. It'll self correct in due time. So it's fine as long as you get it.
>>
>>2831662
Listen, if his take on anatomy works for you. It works, you found an appropriate approach for yourself and that's good.

I'm trying to stop myself from chickenscratching, but whenever I draw a line it ends up wonky as fuck. Plus, whenever I try and correct it my hand goes full retard and does the same wonky twitch repeatedly.

Anything which could help with this? It's kinda frustrating

Use an eraser. Redraw a lot. Magically attain confidence over the years.

Yeah, there is the dynamic sketching approach, but that way is too tedious for a lot of beginners.

So I want to buy some good art books to learn. I know that almost all of them are online but I learn way better on paper. Someone can suggest me some good book worth the money? I think I'm going to buy Keys to drawing first.

Trying to stop chicken-scratching so my lines are extra shit today. I keep reading and doing practice exercises from Keys to Drawing but they don't seem to help, I'm just as shit as I was day 1. I guess I'm just retarded

Here's some quick but cringeworthy, ridiculous dudes that I drew after studying all day. I got a lot to learn and I know it but if I may ask, how I keep the proportions right? I know for example the guy with sword arms are too long and i think the legs of both characters are too long.

Most of the time in my day is spent at work.
As a beginner what should I be practicing away from home/reference?
Are there some good general exercises to incorporate into my day 2 day
Don't want to be wasting hours I could use making progress.

What should I do?
I often give up before I am able to take a drawing far enough. Should I just try to push through? What if it feels like I don't have any options for where to go?
