Something's broken, what do I do?

>The original developer of the site has taken a leave for quite a while, originally due to medical reasons. Progress on the site is almost non-existant at this point. You can try contacting him at @LavaFlake or emailing him at [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>Your streak will go back to 0 and you will have to start again. No other penalties.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>There is no week system anymore, instead new users are given "streaks" based on the number of consecutive days you can submit without getting eliminated. (token losses do not reset your streak)

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

Yeah. Before everything was really exciting just cause it was so new but also cause there would be occasional site updates, frequent streams, lots of memes and jokes in the threads, more activity, plenty of challenges + the monthly comic thing and we'd have the occasional tribunal case to talk about. Now all theres nothing to really look forward to and all the site is used for is to submit a new thing daily. Doesn't look like lava will add new things any time soon and since that sense of excitement everyone had at the start of las has faded, everything is just kinda dull now. Also these threads got really, really fucking slow. I remember sometimes we'd hit the bump limit in the first day and we'd always hit at least 1000 posts, there'd be a bunch of comments after the deadline and the threads never died, people would comment during all hours of the day. I used to keep these threads open and constantly check them cause people were posting so much. I still do now but 9 times out of ten it's still the same 3 hour old post staring back at me.

I really do miss the way things were.

360 something. I might have to stop in the near future because college is getting to be too much. I'm retarded as is and I've been neglecting school for art. I've flunked a basic level math class twice now because I'd rather draw then do math. Jozu - you put a moderate amount of effort into the face and shoulders, but after that you slowly gave up and threw construction out the window. i honestly would have just cropped out everything around the shoulders. also, try using harder edges and deeper contrast with your shading.

Louse - really enjoy your studies! im a sucker for hard edges and blocked in not-quite-rendered coloring. you may want to study different lighting and how it falls on the human body though. your tentacle girl has acceptable anatomy but the colors are muddy, like you laid down confident shading and smudged/blurred it all to hell. (im guilty of this also, dont feel too bad)

Soroneir - the colors and sky are pleasing, but it's overall flat. unless you're doing thumbs, try rendering a few of the really close-up objects next time.

Nelli - thumb looks like shit, but the full pic actually reads pretty nice. personally i wish you'd rendered the head just a little more, but that's just me. i love bribs.

Chimerya - no idea whats going on with the left guy's torso- is it being sucked into the couch? same goes for the legs. next time, sketch the general shape for the ENTIRE form, instead of starting at the head and tacking on each body part as you go down. that'll ensure you end up with shit proportioning far less. (like setting up scaffolding before building). right figure looks ok. you've failed his ass though, and that makes us all sad.

CRT - study more figures and perspective m8, even just basic stuff. there's alot going wrong here, but i assume this was a doodle for funsies so i wont harp on you- for now. (that ear makes me want to kill myself though)

HumanBean - this could be really badass if it looked less flat. i would've done bigger heads in a lesser number, so i could spend time making them three-dimensional without wasting my whole day rendering 20 goddamn heads.

thanks for the crit. Yeah, I still need to work on how to capture the whole form and feel of figures. I'm sad I failed the ass too. Both were photo studies - I painted what I saw for both value-wise. Next time I'll probably figure out how to take artistic liberties to improve the clarity.

I feel like people conflate skill level with improvement. Not to say Mathias hasn't improved since I haven't looked at his old work in a while, but I only ever see people who are at the higher end of las in terms of skill get mentioned whenever anyone asks about improvement even though I think a bunch of the shit tier artists have made decent progress as well.
