Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

>>
>>2792865
You need to squint your eyes and block in the noticeable shapes of value first instead. It looks like a jumbled mess now. If colors are still blending together when you squint your eyes you may need a better ref with less blown-out colors (professionally lit photography is usually bad since it "hides" important planes of the face with harsh lighting, itry to make the reference photos for this thread as wide range of values as possible for this reason)

Your eyes are still symbols, notice how the eyes on my figure (sorry it's a little rough still) show the eyelids? Also the eyebrows aren't so symmetrical. You need to work on your lines too, think about it before putting some down, Peter Han's Dynamic Sketching is great

My advice would be to think of the structure of coral. It's porous and organic, a bit like tubes. Use that to get the look right. Also research different kinds of coral and incorporate it into the drawing. Right now it looks like you just drew flattened tentacles on there, although that is still a work in progress I guess

Something that helps me when practicing eyes is starting with spheres and then drawing the eyelids and all the lines and shading around it. Your eyes seem like big ovals rather than having an underlying eyeball.
The oval part should be the eye socket. So basically you're looking at a sphere inside a deeper oval shape. You just need a bit more time learning anatomy and you'll be fine.
Look at how the eye sits in the socket and how the eyelid and the area next to it bend around it.

>This is usually the most frustrating stage for a beginner and one of the hardest to break out of. It all boils down to truly drawing what you see, measuring twice, and above all, taking time.

I blame the internet for this, and I'm not joking.

There is a strong focus in general on digital painting and drawing from imagination that stunts beginners from sitting down with a pencil and drawing what is in front of them. The internet makes difficult things look easy and confuses the shit out of people.

>>2793378

Anon, it's clear you haven't taken enough time to draw and block a real face that's in front of you.

At this stage, you shouldn't be drawing from imagination.

Total beginner, been working on the Edwards workbook a couple weeks, just have a couple questions.

Would it be a good idea to do the exercises several times each for practice, or perhaps do the Dodson book as well afterwards? Or would it be more beneficial to just move on to draw a box or Loomis next?

Also, I'm not sure if I'm starting to overdo it with measuring. I'm basically using my thumb and pencil to gauge just about every distance and angle possible, because otherwise I fuck up and draw shit too big, even with a basic unit. Will I become over reliant on measuring by doing that, or will it eventually get to where I won't need to do it anymore?

Increase your value range a bit (brighter whites and darker blacks) and focus on edges (soft vs. hard). Keep studying anatomy- it's not enough to know "most of the muscles;" you have to know how to represent them believably.

I like it. There's a book called Van Gogh: Master Draughtsman I think you'd really like/learn from. You can see how he grows from beginner to amazing and copying his drawings (especially his use of short lines for volume) will give you some tools you can adapt in your own landscape drawing. Just keep practicing, you definitely have a good start.

also another question i have is, i'm a VERY visual learner, so if anyone has some kind of videos i could watch while doing this too would be lovely!
my main issue at the moment is figure drawing
i can't seem to figure anything out and it always looks awful.
i know it's not supposed to look good but i just feel like i'm doing it wrong.

In my experience as a beginner artist, his stuff really is essential. It's not going to make you a better artist overnight, and I personally have personally found that things like Keys to Drawing and Scott Robertson are just as important, but he is essential nonetheless.

>>2794566
kind of, when someone asks for help, someone will tell them to look up Loomis, the joke is, he's supposed to be a master artist, and if we all just do what he does, we'll all be great.

You're a funny guy. Loomis teaches you "construction" which is a technique for drawing anything. You're not supposed to use his books like a "How to Draw Manga Girls" sort of way. Sorry but most women aren't these glistening sexual creatures with huge tits and asses as much as I'd personally like them to be. Loomis isn't teaching you how to draw anthro pony porn so his female anatomy will be similar to that of his male anatomy, representative of a generic fit specimen. It's up to you to take the knowledge of what he gives you and change it in the way you see fit. You shouldn't need anyone to tell you that you dumbass.

You're saying they look like men because he isn't emphasizing their sexual dimorphism like your favorite porno artists and photographers do, and I'm saying you're a dumbass virgin.

Women have:

>"inverted"-appearing obliques
>relatively wider hips
>relatively narrower shoulders
>pussies

That's pretty much it and that's what he gives you. You can run with that however you want when it comes to art, but you'll find that most girls don't have huge gaping thigh gaps with pelvic extremities that extend beyond their shoulders, bubble buts and c-cup tits. There's a difference between romanticized, idealistic and realistic anatomy. If you need to be spoon fed that sort of thing like a subhuman retard you are definitely not going to make it.

almost all those things you said women have, those drawings do not.

>quite possibly the only thing feminin in these drawings are the wider hips, but isn't that just "sexualizing"
>the shoulder to head ratio is that of a male
>he left no space for a "pussy" to exist

even in the picture you posted, THERE IS A GAP IN THE CROTCH, it is for birthing children.

Men owe their "less curvy" or more "rectangular" body shape to the fact that their oblique muscles are more developed. I don't know where the hell you got "more vertical" from out of that lmao.

>the shoulder to head ratio is that of a male

Not really, it's just not the shoulder to head ratio of an anime character.

You are fucking stupid kid. A prominent thigh gap isn't ubiquitous even among healthy females, and this is obviously a hastily thrown together plate to begin with.

This isn't some SJW shit, this is the house that Loomis built. Women can come or go as they please, but the truth is yeah, the more exaggerated a female's sexual dimorphism (to a point) the more appealing we find it. The fact that some particularly porn fried basement dwellers think that a featureless stock female created for the sole purpose of a brief description of gender differences looks like a man because it's not drawn like a Shane Glines pinup is patently ridiculous.

Don't get so frustrated, anon, it's just a few drawings. Making a shit drawing sucks, but it's not a total waste if you learn from it. The best advice you could take is to give draw real people, and draw a bunch of different body types to get a feel for how they work and how they look. Older people tend to be drawn taller, and have longer, sharper and more pronounced features. Older women usually have more pronounced curves, so it's not enough to just draw them thicker, you need to add curves in the right places to get the idea across.
I think the main thing you should be focusing on is how flat she looks. It doesn't look like your thinking about the forms that make her up. Keep your diagonals consistant and try to emphasize form over contours to get a fuller look. It will also help you visualize your shading once you get to it, so it's good to keep in mind while you draw. The redlines is half assed, but I hope it helps

But can i get some critique on it ?
>>
>>2795121
i for the life of me cannot draw ellipses in perspective. whats your secret?
>>
>>2795144
do the drawabox exercises
and draw squares or plot the axis around them.
>>
Here's 12 60-second angry faces generated from line-of-action.com. Feels exhausting because a) it's more natural for me to exercise figure drawing on paper and b) I'm not quite used to drawing poses and expressions so quickly
>>
>>2795149
Don't you need to have really good understanding of face before doing this? Especially for 60 seconds practice.
>>
>>2795144
I have to admit, I do not feel very confident about drawing ellipses neither.I learned the method to draw them from Eric Olson`s perspective course and after learning the method its just practice.
>>
>>2795150
I'd like to say I have an okay idea of where parts of the face lie and how they measure up, but you could be right. I'm just mainly pushing myself to hopefully gain something out of it. Last time I did half an hour of 60-second faces on paper, next time I'll probably go for longer intervals
>>
>>2795112
My advice would be not to rely on one source for learning. I know a lot of people here keep screaming loomis but there are other teachers out there, other method that might suit you better and speed up your learning. I'm at the point where I kinda combine multiple methods and it's working.

Relying on just loomis might frustrate you later on and slow down your process.

We live in time where information is free. Youtube is packed with tutorials videos and drawing/painting demos by professional. It's a privileged and you should exploit it. You don't have to rely only on books.

Read and watch everything you can then take what you want and mix it up with what you've already learn.

Looks about right but the other glaring issue is the lack of anatomy. Go practice that and proportions, for that go to the books in the sticky.

Just look for it man. It's not hard. Here I'll give you videos I found useful.

Head Construction Demo
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGqLd8aLnAfFdTKsJsdN2Le4uJZQf5ihl

Basic proportions
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLntQHDbCBWnx3Aw-UDlHC2CyoeR48b5Q9

Look for others yourself. Also there's CGP.

Feed your brain all these and when you find a much more comfortable or method that you find more efficient practice that. You'll find yourself mixing all these when you're drawing/painting.

Don't get stuck watching it without doing it and don't stop reading the books either. Feed your brain as much as you can and practice it as much as you can.
>>
>>2795218
The more you do it the better your understanding is and the faster you'll get.
>>
>>2795250
You need to measure a lot more, instead of just going right into doing the construction.

Thanks man, I'll keep that in mind. I wanna be able to draw the cute girl some day.

Does drawing from straight reference help you draw from imagination much? I've been doing whiteboard dailies for a few months now and I've definitely improved my ability to copy images, but my work from imagination has stagnated.

I assume I need to hit the books before I start making strides in that department.

Somewhat related

Was doing one drawing when my Photoshop crashed. No files in the Autorecover folder nor while reopening after the crash.

The joke programs that people suggest on the official forums are beyond retarded. Is there any chance of recovering files like this?

PS says it is not a valid document. Illustrator opens it blank.

Fuck

Is it possible to just "doodle" and get better progressively by trial and error? Or would my time be best spent going through the fundamentals most of the time?
>>
>>2795593
Deliberate practice is the fastest way to get better, hands down. You can "doodle" all you want but don't be upset when in three years the hard-working person who started drawing at the same time as you has gains that are almost impossible for you to catch up to.

In short, yeah, you're gonna have to do a lot of things you don't want to do but are necessary for getting better.
>>
>>2792724
Anyone have a PDF for Keys to Drawing?
>>
>>2795593
You can doodle of course but its definitely not an efficient way to learn, and if you're aimlessly doodling without implementing any study of fundamentals at all you could end up just spinning your wheels.

I do study-freedraw/paint-study-freedraw/paint. I think its definitely important to make sure you're not just grinding fundamentals, thats boring as fuck and a good way to burn yourself out and enjoy neither life nor art. Plus, if you freedraw every other day, you have a chance to implement stuff you've been studying in more relevant ways.
