Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Workbook says this should take about 45 minutes to an hour to copy, and it's taken me more than twice that long already and it's not even finished.

Am I doing something wrong if it's taking me so much longer than it should? I'm trying to improve my sighting, so I'm measuring and correcting stuff a lot, which I'm sure is slowing me down. Not sure if time is something I should even be concerned about; the workbook suggesting a time frame just makes me wonder.

it's not the redness of the nose, it's the shape (angular-ish), personally I think the nose is fine, but the neck is definitely too long though. Think about how the neck connects to the shoulders, if you draw the upper portion of her torso you'll see what I mean

Which workbook is this anon?

Your contour seems to be spot on with a few small issues - you'll see them when you start to do the shading, they'll jump out at you.

Pro-tip: Move your eyes back and forth when you shade and compare what you have and what the workbook has. By moving your eyes quickly back and forth see if you have an "animation" effect, if so, something is off and you need to fix it.

I wouldn't worry about the time, focus on the accuracy. You'll get the speed with time. The measuring is often laborious at first.

Excellent fucking work.

>>
>>2795668

If you want to develop your drawing skills further (which I assume is what you're here for) then have a look at the sticky and go through those books. They'll help you develop both observation and imagination drawing skills.

Also to add to what >>2795684 said, in addition to drawing from life (objects around you) enroll in a class that does nude model drawing.
>>
>>2795615
get the fuck out of the beg thread.
>>
>>2795690

I find it strange that Drawing Right Side of The Brain would give time limits that low, considering it's a book aimed at beginner drafting.

One way to speed up, and to train your eye further, is to look at a particular straight line, visualize the angle of it in your head, and try to put it down without measuring, and then measure and fix it.

It seems counter-intuitive but this is how you train yourself, and eventually you can do a lot of this by eye with relative few errors.

As always, if you're not attending life model drawing classes and you can, then do so, etc etc.

I like the soft quality. But be careful of over-rendering. The left (our right) eye area has some highlighting that does not make sense for the form. It gives off this mexican-american airbrushed car woman look that you might not want.
>>
>>2795615
in the sketch, her face is in front of her hair on the left, in your paint her hair overlaps her face (because the wind is blowing it that way?)
either way, it makes her head look really round and featureless, I'd recommend putting the hair back like it is in the sketch.
Also, in the sketch her lips went out farther and in your paint they look squished and swollen, they aren't going in a direction, they're just connected to each other (if that makes any sense) its mainly the sides of her lips in the sketch that makes her look like she's expressing something, and that just isn't there in the paint.
but overall, nice job anon

>>
>>2795861
the colors aren't the issue, put the picture down, leave it be, try again.
you'll get better results if you keep drawing lots of heads with subtle improvements instead of stressing over this one head

>>2795869
>Have you made some improvements
according to every single portrait ive done color has been a prolbem. going off what >>2795866
says
>the colors aren't the issue
in which case i have improved on the colors. as for symbol drawing, you can tell im putting a lot more effort into capturing details in the features and i was having trouble with making forms look like they wrap around the head. as for construction, i have a lot more grinding to do. i cant really draw outside of the no tilt 3/4 view
>>
>>2795879
you misunderstand me, these colors you are using are bad, but you should not be focused on the colors. don't keep painting female heads, start sketching them, so that you can make quicker progress and not have to worry about other things like color theory, tackle one issue at a time

red.jpg
127KB, 471x424px
>>2795879
I'm a beginner too but I tried to redline it. I think the issue is that you're not properly constructing things or thinking about perspective. The eyes for example didn't line up properly I think. Another thing is you're not wrapping things around the form, for example, the lips you painted are fairly flat and straight even though they should be rounder and fuller. They are also sloped downward and don't follow the rules of perspective just like the eyes (I think mines are a bit off too). The fulcrum under the nose is painted as a completely straight line when it should have a bit more of a curve and rhythm to it. The eyebrows are also a bit flat and don't properly wrap around the forehead, remember there is a bone there that juts out at the brow line. For the nose, I think you structured it well but you flattened the nostrils too much and didn't align one of them properly so it looks like it's sloping down kinda like the lips.

Again, I'm a beginner too so my advice may be off. Sorry if that's the case.
>>
>>2795879
My advice would be to not worry about color at all. Go back to drawing for a while to get the basics down. Just a pencil or charcoal for dark values and white chalk for highlights. I'd recommend finding books of drawings by Renaissance or other artists of that type as well as studying and learning anatomy. Having the dual benefit of knowing anatomy and how to render it is going to be a real game changer.

Don't get so frustrated, anon, it's just a few drawings. Making a shit drawing sucks, but it's not a total waste if you learn from it. The best advice you could take is to give draw real people, and draw a bunch of different body types to get a feel for how they work and how they look. Older people tend to be drawn taller, and have longer, sharper and more pronounced features. Older women usually have more pronounced curves, so it's not enough to just draw them thicker, you need to add curves in the right places to get the idea across.
I think the main thing you should be focusing on is how flat she looks. It doesn't look like your thinking about the forms that make her up. Keep your diagonals consistant and try to emphasize form over contours to get a fuller look. It will also help you visualize your shading once you get to it, so it's good to keep in mind while you draw. The redlines is half assed, but I hope it helps
>>
How do you motivate yourself to draw? It's by far my biggest weakness, so many times I'll try and start to draw and then get bored within 5 minutes and it puts me off drawing for a while.

It's right, you need to know basics to draw nice anime grills, but maybe you can try apply what you learned to draw it. Slowly. Make one finish drawing, see what you need learn to do it better. You can practice by drawing different parts of body separately, do quick gestures to learn how to make dynamic characters poses. Again apply it to animu grill. Drawing should be fun first of all. Don't forget why you do it.
>>
>>2796393
I'm not sure if this is the place to ask, but is there some exercises I can do before drawing a full picture? I had a look through the sticky but didnt find anything, I might have missed something though.
>>
>>2796395
Find out about perspective basics, you can do quick, nice gestures too. Make thumbnails before making full pic to find best idea and composition. Good luck, anon.

Measurement, and value rather than lines. Make sure everything is in proper orientation with things beside it. What I do is take pictures with my phone periodically because that helps me see errors (like a weird placement of a lip, or an eye is too small, etc) better than just eyeballing it for some reason. You have the basic idea down fine, now it's just making sure you keep up with the practicing and learning!

How fucked is my anatomy?
>>
>>2796788
lmao you didn't "research" shit. If your understanding of form isn't on par with the rest, it'll always come out flat like it does now. It's boring, everything is symbol drawn, stiff as a board, and it doesn't even look like there's any effort put into it. I'm just looking at a doodle on my screen.

This is what happens when you try to draw things without the proper visual library - not just for anatomy. It could be for dragons, castles, spaceships, or whatever. Keep studying (hard), truly try to understand and absorb what you're learning and apply it to works from imagination. Above all, you need to be patient. At this point, there should be more study compared to original works (unless you want to stay deviantart-tier).

What I propose is you read the sticky and go through Keys to Drawing which will assist you in maintaining the proper measurements when it comes to studies - which means that your knowledge of the human body will increase when you try to do original works. After you're done with that book you'll realize how much better your eye will be trained to notice small things that can potentially make or break a drawing (from reference or otherwise). This is going to take some time so I hope you internalize that.

Spend more time on each piece so that you dont make simple mistakes like making them cross-eyed or making the face asymmetrical.

As for finishing a drawing, it takes time to learn individual skills like drawing hair, eyes, clothes and rendering values, so spend some time on these small things too.
Also, try to draw large.

I'm trying not to symbol draw but I can't help it. why is drawing so difficult?
>>
>>2797251
Don't listen to >>2797256 ,it is important to draw from imagination while studying anatomy and drawing from life to reinforce what you have learned.

Is learning to draw from life, non-digitally, the way to go to git gud at drawing? Should all my efforts go into that?
>>
>>2797276

You won't learn how to draw from imagination by purely drawing from life, although life drawing is a good foundation for everything

It looks like you just used the 'Color' layer mode on top of the painting without having good values, so it looks muddy. Practice your values also flip your canvas to see your drawing errors and look at reference.

by actually researching
>>
>>2797273
because you're doing a whole drawing without knowing anything about individual parts of the head and then expecting something. anytime you draw a body/face, cut it into multiple parts and practice drawing each part and then putting them together. so cut the face into 3 parts or at least start from drawing proper constructions so you have proportions down before doing any detail

What are your thoughts on drawabox.com?
I have some talent, but lack skill.
I'm mostly interested in drawing people.
Should I start drawing boxes in order to learn or just pursue what I want right now?
>>
>>2797330
Just draw what you find fun. If you want to draw people then just jump straight into it. Check out some Vilppu or Hampton if you're interested in the figure.
>>
so i'm currently working on drawabox
i was wondering if theres any other good resources about perspective.
i really really struggle with it

>>
>>2797343
Draw the contour of all of the shapes first, and then, following that: add enrichment shapes to the project, starting with the darkest shapes to keep the drawing luminescent
>>
Sorry if this isn't the right thread but I'm going fucking insane. For a year now I've tried Photoshop, Artrage, Krita, and SAI and I cannot finish a painting. I know nothing about setting up the software, or what brushes to use, I've learned absolutely nothing even though I watched seasons upon seasons of Bob Ross. I just want to paint landscapes and backgrounds and nothing I do can even remotely come out decent enough to finish. How do I get this digital art so I can finally work and stop going crazy I'm so fucking desperate right now.

The beard is relatively lengthier than the comb-over; the lines defining the downward arc of the beard before the enrichment shapes seem to be too short inparticular.

Just a question: are you trying to correctly replicate this image by-the-numbers or trying to stylise it? Your line quality is a bit scratchy, but that's ok

Tumblr/10 speech-wise, try to keep your origins in your pants, thanks.
There's no point in colouring your drawings for now, work on eyes and facial features in general, you have little understanding for what they are. I honestly recommend working with pencil and paper, graphics tablets require more work to create depth.

Tried working with material exercises today. The one of the left block is silk cloth dropped randomly on it. I feel like there's too many folds but I can't put my finger on which ones to fix.

The right one is the same material hanging slightly above the block by a point in the middle of the cloth.

>study photo trying to make it as realistic as possible (only lines though no painting)
>somehow it comes out a bit stylized
Am I retarded? I don't even know how to explain it. It's like I'm at a point where I'm trying to be as realistic as possible but I'm not good enough to do it so it just comes out like a weird bad attempt at realism.
I feel like the problem is that I cannot look at the picture to draw what I see AND draw it at the same time without looking at the paper. If I try that it just comes out fucked because I can't keep track of proportions.

Anything could be better; I can't get worse!
There cannot be anything worse than the worst!
Ergo I can only be better than my worst
Or stay this bad

I'm trying to better understand leg anatomy, so I looked at some quick references, and then at my own legs, and broke down the muscles into the major parts. Does this look mostly right?
>>
>>2797544
Don't use lines. There are very rarely lines in nature. If you want a realistic look only put down differences in value. Let the shift from light to dark suggest a line.
>>
>>2797576
You're not too retarded to learn. You're too lazy to put in the effort to learn. But like anon said, not all of us will make it.

https://aimeeknight.files.wordpress.com/2016/01/edwards-the-new-drawing-on-the-right-side-of-the-brain-viny.pdf

I think your problem is that you're forcing yourself to draw. When you're copying something, you shouldn't be feeling anything but instead be in a trance like state. You need to switch to your right brain and get rid of the critical thinking that weighs you down.
