Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

A good start, there's some parts where the forms are hard to read.

I see you corrected some of the placement of the features. If you did it after you finished and you noticided by yourself I guess that's ok, it means you did see your own errors. But if you placed your drawing on top of the ref and corrected it to have a prettier drawig for the thread then that's a no no, we need to see the mistakes

Anyways, this is some death grips shit I did yesterday for fun, ref is mostly this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MHhLDCJ57E

Why would anyone want to prefer pen and paper over digital, unless your some pretentious art kiddie who just graduated, there is no reason to use pen and paper like ever.

Pen and Paper will always beat drawing tablets for line work. Digital is best for rendering, and while you can do line work on digital it is a handicap unless you want to put down a grand on a great tablet.

It depends on your end goal.

If the things you're aiming all done on digital then yes. Just do pencil and paper on traditional for the occasional sketch like head construction/anatomy/gesture when you're not on the computer. But spend more time on digital and focus on learning the digital tools.

Unless you're already trained in traditional and are just transitioning into digital don't waste time getting really good at traditional before jumping into digital.

I'll tell you this even though the fundamentals and understanding works for all medium the motor skill required for drawing on digital tools are harder than traditional. Especially for those who uses the small tablet.

That's why we rely the tools! Of course with mileage you'll eventually ditch it. IF you stick to it.

Digital is fine as long as you avoid doing Ctrl+Z on literally every line. (Drivers shouldn't be an issue) Try doing some of the exercises on paper though.

For example, for the lines, I practised a few weeks on both paper and digital, so I guess it paid off. I only looked at the reference a few times, then did what my mind felt would look correct.

>>2782651
Digital is fine as long as you don't rely excessively on the crutch that is Ctrl+Z. I haven't completely given up on traditional yet, I do some of those exercises on paper. Digital is just cleaner to post here because my scanner is shit.

Using digital or pen/paper is literally the same.
If you practiced alot on digital, you are going to draw awful when you go back to pen/paper. Same goes for pen/paper. However your skill is still going to be there, just pick whatever you find more comfy to use. It doesn't matter at all, (I mean like who draws with pen and paper nowadays lol)

Not bad.

Just remember. This is the biggest thing. The first time you do every exercise in DROTRSOTB it's not gonna be perfect. This is what energizes and also what kinda makes beginners wanna quit. The first couple of times you copy upside down until you finish the book.

Keep at it. When you can do photo realistic portraits then it's time for loomis.

Well, fact is that I'm more comfortable drawing on my monitor, the reason is a bit autistic, but I'm quite a messy person and my desktop is always full of shit, I have to clean it every time, also I usually find "annoying" the act of taking out the materials, I know it's really stupid but man I find harder to set up my work instead of just working.
The monitor on the other hand is always in front of me, it doesn't require any waste of paper, any material, any space etc.

Anyway I see that my work looks wat better on paper even if I'm a beginner. Sorry for my drama

I'm watching the Proko measurement video and it made me realize that my biggest fear (that using heads for measurement is only good for drawing people and it won't help me get better overall like sticking to the other types of measuring will) was stupid and I should be comparing as many things to each other as possible when drawing. It's more for developing the eye I assume than cramming something like anatomy. 10 hour bargues give more for a beginner than 20 hours of what they normally do because it helps them see better.

>>2783465
I hope my red line makes sense. The shadow below the lip isn't that far off, it just feels off because of that brush stroke making it feel more rounded than angular. Also, I'm disappointed that you measured for 8 hours and missed that the right side is mostly a straight line. Other than that though, good job getting a lot of stuff close.

>>2783534
well... the proportions are adequate but everything else could use some work. The figure is off balance and is gonna fall over to the left- try drawing a straight central line to help with weight distribution. the figure's hip box is drawn as a trapezoid which might be a personal thing but if you draw it as a rectangle (male) or an ellipse (female) it will help you with anatomy when you get to that stage. your neck is odd - the neck part of the spine should not be a straight line, it's curved. try reducing your scratchy lines.

I have a question about rendering/blending...

I've gotten pretty good at blocking in colors, the shapes/colors are close to the ref, everything is great. When I try to 'finish' a piece though, it goes to hell. The shapes are lost, the colors get all muddy/shitty, the values get fucked. I've tried going slowly, using different brushes, etc, but no matter what it gets fucked. This does not happen when I do greyscale studies, so I'm lead to believe I'm missing some big thing about color/light. I have read the color and light book everyone posts here, but it hasn't solved my issue.

Are there some basics about blending color I'mi probably missing? Should I not add highlight until the end? Maybe I'm blending too many shadow/light colors together?
>>
>>2783779
It's not -completely- bad - at least you're focusing on negative space. If anything work on your values and edge control when it comes to it.

>>2783846
A lot of the shading here feels flat because it follows the outlines more or less exactly.

The panel with Frisk is the closest to what you probably want. The rest of the shadows tend to stay pretty close to the edge and the result is boring. Think harder about how shadows would hit them if they were 3d objects.

Also try to keep in mind where you're imagining the light source is. You're pretty consistent with this for the most part, but in the last panel the shadows are on the bottom on one leaf and the top on the other, which doesn't really make sense.

The second to last panel looks pretty nice though. I like the use of multiple shades of the shadows.

I attempted to darken all values to the point of total non-discrimination as they absconded yet further away from the vanishing point and intersected the most outward point of the camera's perception.

But that neck! Something about the human in general, and the poor value control bothers me. I need to go back to basics, but first I'm going to finish this

got it, thanks anon :P
>>
>>2782820
The only thing with doing digital is that it auto corrects your lines to make your marks more crips compared to hard work when trying to do it traditionally, I do both but, I do traditional more than digital. Also when you do the traditional method as opposed to digital you learn different methods of holding your tool, how to control it as well. Focusing on the point as well. But hey if you prefer digital go with it but I feel traditional can be way more rewarding in the long run.>>2784133
>>
>>2784222
Auto correct lines? There's such thing? I had to control my strokes on my small intuos and refine the drawing in 2 to 3 layers just to get a clean line art. I draw better on paper even though I hardly touch it.

It's hard to tell but I believe you know it happens when you start off by drawing a wobbly line horizontal or vertical the program will touch it up for you. layering and retouching on the other hand is different from what I'm referring to. Why do you draw better on paper as opposed to digital? Also why don't you use the traditional method more often?
>>
>>2784259
i dont think that happens in any software
>>
>>2784250
can you find the half of a space vertically then horizontally? that's all it does, helps you frame shit and helps you draw from observation by separating shit into 4 quadrants so you know what goes where for the most part.

when people say loomis head construction i think they largely mean his actual head placement thing. his proportion stuff isnt as amazing.
>>
>>2784259
I lower the opacity and refine my line drawing by actually drawing over my shit lines. Similar to how you use light box. I don't think photoshop have that magic line function.
>>
>>2783448
I don't think that is terribly uncommon. That's what I like about watercolors with a water brush. There literally no setup or cleanup.
>>
>>2783464
Shitposting. Master-tier artists may have a sense of human proportion ingrained, but only because they studied and drew accurately so much it became intimately familiar to them, and to draw it accurately without that intimacy required some kind of learning tool, head measurements and otherwise.

hand on her hip not even close in the correct position. too far away from her ribs, and for gods sake finish the hand on her head. more of the elbow jutting out can be defined (at least with simple lines) to illustrate that it's at an angle and not facing directly sideways in relation to the camera (look at her right arm and elbow more closely)

other than that i like this and the fairly smooth lines; there is definitely a more refined gesture process you have compared to the rest in this thread, would love to see a finished figure by you

here's one way I approach it: lighten the line art layer until you can barely see it, set it to multiply then paint your values/colours underneath it while using the lines as a guide for your edges and construction. When your forms are moderately defined, turn off your line art layer and do further refinements from there.
Another way is to adjust the colour of the lines layer to something less contrasting than black and paint over them but i feel like this takes more effort

To become -good- probably two or three years. Four if you're doing it casually. Maybe one and a half if you're NEET and draw for 8 hours a day unironically (but we all know that isn't happening). I saw in Ikea the other day these large plastic desk covers.

How fucking hard do you push your pencil? I've been using a compressed wooden plank for years and there's barely any scratches on it, you savage.
Like the humidity and temperature of your plank is going to affect your drawing quality.

realistically though, an artist tote board or glass panel should be good enough

i like the face and the neck thing, but the pose is as stiff-looking as that axe handle; the inner elbow crease is too deep and down-curving; the knee is supposed to offset the line of the fibula and the femur in the leg, but does not appear to do so in the drawing; the suit's design appears mostly uninteresting and i can't tell what it's made of; and i can't tell what's going on at her shoes, the mask thing in front of her face, and on the flat surface of the axe head in particular.

Anyone have any tips on getting better at values and blending with charcoal or pencil? I always end up with a muddy dark mess eventually even with erasers and stumps

I honestly feel bad for you that you are that insecure about your art work that one good drawing in a beginner thread has triggered you so badly.

Kek.

/beg/ isn't the place to cry like fucking children. Save it for /draw/ or especially /aasg/.

>>2785311
If you watch certain Youtube artists (first one that comes to mind is Ahmed Aldoori) they get their ideas out through a rough, blocky sketch then draw details on top of it. It's usually done for conceptual artwork -compared to what you did here, it's not entirely necessary because you're drawing from ref but I guess it works since your preliminary scribbles gets your proportions somewhat in.

The hat looks more like you drew a hat you think they look rather than what a hat would really look like. The backwards bill looks off I guess.
>>
>>2785371
the haqt beak is out for the way most hats are, the collar of his clothes looks a tad off.

these are all nitpicks though, go ahead and finish it, for a /beg/ user its great.
