let's get along edition

Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

You need some motherfucking gesture and you need to learn to fucking use your eyes and do visual measuring. Stop focusing so much on details when you can't get basic form and proportions down faggot.
>>
>>2778275
Look stop stressing and feeling insecure. It should be as accurate as possible, so that when you flip it right-side up it looks the same as the ref. However you shouldn't waste your time trying to get that one drawing perfect upside down.

That exercise is just to teach you not to do symbol drawing, instead just to draw what you see.

Pay more attention to your accuracy, everything is off. Slow down and make sure every line, angle and shape is dead on. Ease up on the scribbles, it looks like you're trying to get some value, but it just looks messy like that. Practice getting an even tone with your pencil, and study hatching as well.

>>2778870
I would recommend reading Keys to drawing and/or Drawing on the right side of the brain at this point anon.

>>2778869
I would recommend, that you don't just read the book and copy the plates, but go to figure drawing class/night, draw people in public cafes/bus/whatever, look at drawings from the old masters and copy them, use photos, etc. the book is there to help you to draw a figure, but its only a supplement to drawing from life/imagination/photos, not a replacement.

>>2778847
The best system for learning for me is, to repeat it until I feel confident that I know what I am doing, then I apply it to something. You could copy it a couple of times then do a drawing from life (preferred) or a photo using what you learned from it. You could also try to re-draw it from memory.

I'd recommend looking at Loomis' facial construction, it'll definetly help you out alot.
>>
>>2778952
You're symbol drawing. You draw the eyes too big because you place extra importance on them (everyone in the beginning does this). You need to spend more time looking at your reference and less at your paper. Observe, measure accurately, and place your lines. Be patient with them, and if you haven't read KtD, I recommend it.

>>2779026
The first thing you should work on is basic perspective. It is really subtle, and you won't see it in a person's face unless you measure just because of the way the mind works when looking at faces. Her face is in 3/4 perspective, so the features on the right side of her face HAVE to be bigger because the right side of her face is closer than the left side. Pretty simple right?

You should draw still life for a few hours before attempting another portrait. It will help a lot.

>>
>>2779072
Focus less on blending, more on getting forms down. Whew lawd too shiny.

Hmm, compare the right eye with your reference, you'll see the error there yourself. Chin is too long. Do you work zoomed all the way up into small details? If you're having trouble it's always good to zoom out A LOT to see your errors. Right cheek isn't out enough.

It looks like you're pretty swell at picking out values though, and you're definitely well on your way to where you need to be to produce decent portraits. Focus less on the time (and blending). Best wishes.

Your main problems are:
-inaccurate drawing (which is solved by doing exercises from "Keys to Drawing"; especially from chapter about measuring and negative space)
-inaccurate values (which is solved by practicing drawing from life and drawing value scales, like on pic related; make sure that you have some soft pencils or charcoal available).

>>2779077
The time you're spending whining could be spent, y'know, drawing more. So shut up, you're off to a good start. The eyes are off, the perspective on the eyes are off... it looks like you did a little bit of a structural underdrawing but didn't really heed to your guidelines or weren't sure where to place them. Muck around the internet to find resources on facial proportions and draw more faces until they become a little more familiar to you.

I really like how the face's expression was handled - but I would improve the rendering of the hands as they look a little too sausage-y for my tastes. Maybe try to break up the hands into parts to avoid that? (pic included by @skwndcjfTm on twitter)?

I also would pay attention to how the fat of the buttocks/thighs falls, as it looks a bit odd in this version, but I think further rendering the pose might improve it?? Just some suggestions!!

These threads are shit for 2 reasons.
1. Because of le so edgy faggots like this guy >>2779442
2. Only beginners come here so the only people that actually get good advice are people who are even below beginner tier, I.E. they're drawing boxes or symbol drawing. After you get passed that stage you either get vague suggestions, wrong advice (like saying symbol drawing even when it's clearly not, or "pillow shading"). And if you're at an okay level for a beginner, 9 times out of 10 people will just berate you and pass it off as advice or you'll get ignored and no one will help you.

I don't know if these threads used to be better but I've been browsing on and off for almost 2ish years now and they've always been kinda weak. The only way to improve them would be if some higher level guys took the time to come help out the beginners but that rarely happens and sometimes when it does happen the beginners are unperceptive and just bitch out.

/end of autistic rant
>>
>>2779686
What even is symbol drawing?
>>
>>2779689
basically it can mean two things imo. When someone is drawing from ref and they aren't able to see things in shapes so they end up drawing what they think something looks like. I.E. an almond shape for the eyes instead of maybe a triangular shape or w/e it actually looks like. The other is when people are drawing from imagination. I think symbol drawing then is when you aren't constructing things properly and putting them in the correct perspective. So someone could draw a head looking straight at us but the nose would be in side view.
>>
>>2779686
then what's the point of these threads anyway if it's useless or potentially incorrect advice

why is anyone here if it's such a steep climb
>>
>>2779697
You gotta have some where to keep all the beginners. If there was no beginner thread than they'd spill over to the draw thread or the alt thread and people would just get fed up. They're basically just a containment thread imo.
>>

Keep it up.

I don't know if you're just lazy but use layers. You're working in digital use the tools. Do your construction stuff in one layers then draw on another layer or if you want make a new layer and refine it again.

It's like drawing on light box with infinite pen/pencil and papers.
>>
>>2779848
I think your proportions and understanding of anatomy are actually quite nice minus the legs, they look a bit off to me(might just be the lack of tone). I think you did a good job with the upper body, just the upper arm on the left(viewers perspective) might need fixing, the meeting between the lats/bicep seems off, it looks like they're just squished against each other rather than subtly overlapping like it seems like they should from this angle.

Your lines are hairy, be more confident with your strokes. Use single, smooth, confident strokes. If you fuck up just ctrl+z until you get it right. If you have a shitty tablet think about getting lazy nezumi, depending on your opinion of it as a crutch/necessary tool if even your most fluid strokes are shaky.

Overall its nice in a humble, digital way(that's a genuine compliment, sorry its so vague).

When you want to move forward I would strongly advise stop using white backgrounds, it will greatly hinder you from understanding value.

So uh, how the hell do you even know what to draw?

>>
>>2779526
>>2779527
>>2779551
>Taking the bait
>>
>>2780317

Okay. Well. Consider what you want to draw as a goal and what you can't draw in achieving that goal. What you're fucking up that gets in your way towards being able to create the things you'd like to make.

Literally make a list of those things if you have to. If you generally don't draw well, you're missing fundamental understanding of what goes into creating art. Study the fundamentals. Can't make coherent shapes? Draw shapes. Can't draw what you're looking at? Work on sight drawing.

Alright. So you can draw bodies. Kind of. The legs look funny, the arms dangle and are differing sizes, the face looks weird. What is it?

Start studying generals. Then start narrowing down your problem areas as begin to become more and more competent.

When you sit down to draw, you aim to draw the things you desired to draw. Doodle shit if you can't come up with an idea.

But if you cannot, cannot, cannot draw those things you want to be drawing and something is blocking you from doing it well: that's what you zero in on and study.

Out of ideas and don't want to doodle? Find a book or a lesson plan or a lecture video series and /learn/. Spend your time wisely. You'll become better supposing the day comes when you get that idea you want to draw. Don't procrastinate until you feel like learning or drawing freely. Do both.
>>
>>2780327
Alright, I'll try and do that. I have ADHD so I find it difficult to sit down and do something for a long time but once I actually sit down and draw I tend to stay for a few hours without thinking about taking a break.
>>
>>2780330

Also, I am not sure if I mentioned it (I rambled A LOT, god damn) but make a list of goals if you need to.

I feel silly as shit making to do lists and stuff, but it really does keep it in your head as something you can move through and mark off.

It's like having a story idea that breaks down when you put it on paper. That's a good thing. You need to put things out of your head to begin fixing them. However you got to, you have to pull it out, put it out so you can see its flaws and what you can't do, and get right to patching it up.

That's excellent shading but perhaps sharpen your pencil to give clear definition to the shapes. The pencil in particular is very blurry.

Also check your perspective, if the pencil is going away from you the top of it should be getting thinner and you should see much less of the rubber at the end. Great shading though.

You squished it up a bit, and make it more fat.

I hate endorsing the ruler, but try to get your pencil, hold it so that it covers part of the features, put your thumb where the distance between the nib and your thumb measures the distance between the two features, like so shown in pic related. In that picture: i measure the distance between two nails in my shelf using pencil technique.

Do so for the chin and the distance of the eyes, too. That's likely where this went wrong.

Don't take the traditional proportional model as gospel; just don't stray to far from it, I'd say

Watch also the shape of the eyes; the left eye looks closer to the reference because it's slightly elliptical; eyes cannot contain a perfectly square shape and look accurate, because the basic shape of the eye is a sphere.

Beware of the shape and size of the lip; the top of the lip looks too big here, as if it had been puckered. Curve the lips around the jawline; lips are also 3d

On the other hand: I like the confident lines, and you are breaking out of symbol drawing. Now it's just the accurate measurements and analysis of shapes

The body is well structures with a good amount of lines to show anatomy. Impressive hands and arms.

The head is very wide, it should be much thinner and slanted on the chin; the model's jawline has two lines at almost exactly 45 degrees each. The mouth is too large but a good shape, make it smaller. The nose is fine but erase that vertical line to the left.

as for the eyes, they are too squarish. Round them out like lemons.

Really the only major issues to do with the face are the mouth and chin. Be sure to place your finger over the mouth and chin on the picture on the screen, you will see what I mean.

Any points on this?

I at first thought that her leg in the air was too short compared to the other one, but then I realized that the reference has her foot bending BACKWARDS slightly, which shortens the foot making it look weird on the reference too.

How does this translate to you?

side note, is the shading too muddy? It's like it has too much grey in it
>>
>>2781277
The lower leg looks shorter than it should be, maybe that's why it seems off to you. Her left arm looks longer than the right arm as well. When you're drawing things that are farther away it's generally better to err on it being smaller than it should be rather than larger, that way you can at least play off it going back in perspective.
Your problem with the shadows aren't necessarily how grey they are but how splotchy they are and how they relate to the local color of the skin. Grey shadows wouldn't stand out as much if it wasn't so pink. The shadows on the left arm don't seem to make much sense, and the limbs are bending in weird ways. If you're unsure of the anatomy, rather than trying to translate it it would have been better to exaggerate the gesture and make the forms more fluid. Look at how John Asaro paints his dancers, for example.

You're emphasizing details that either aren't there or are barely visible in your reference. Work in simpler shapes and omit what's not important, rather than trying to construct everything. And clean up your shit anon, your construction looks really messy.

I want to take a university course next year relating to digital character design or graphic design, however I'm still pretty /beg/.
Do university courses teach you anything to make you better or is it all coursework where I'm distinct to struggle?
Should i take a year off and improve myself or go now with friends?

The eyes doesn't get that small unless it's REALLY far away or the person have some sort of condition. Look at mirror then slow turn your head sideways. Observe and analyze.

I also suggest you work on your head construction, features placement and anatomy. I recommend Proko.

I dropped the ball again

Blatantly: I need to go back to a zone where my anatomy and likeness skills can be refined; but a critical analysis of where I went wrong from another person may aid my direction

It's not supposed to be Twilight but it reminds me of it and it scares me

How the fuck do you draw something in perspective that isn't perfectly aligned to a grid? Everytime I see a tutorial on perspective it always deals with these boxes or city blocks that are perfectly aligned with each other. Do you just kind of wing it? I've struggled with this for an embarrassingly long period of time and I'm about to tear my hair out
>>
>>2781162
Donald trump has heavy eye contours due to eyelashes. Eyelashes are so small and thus usually neglected by beginners, but they are such a staple. A person without eyelashes looks terrifying

Starting off to do faces, is it better to just edit the image and turn them to b&w for values or eye the values from the actual color and lighting?
>>
>>2781693
B&W is good for starting out so you have one "dimension" to worry about getting accurately (just values instead of values and color)

>>
>>2781715
By taking your time to measure. That's how I cured mine, anyway.

Also your values are too weak. Need darker darks especially on all of the shirt and the hardest shadows on the face.
>>
>>2780945
The whole point of this thread is to take people who can draw stick figures and make them do perfect pencil drawings of anything in real life.

The cool stuff is in the drawing thread. In order to become good at drawing you have to master IRL drawing before hand(IE this thread).

I know the flower you drew was cool, but most of the people here are beginners working through Loomis or the symbol drawing books.

keep at it lad.

maybe draw the model on a 3d grid to give yourself a better idea of the depth or draw models and grid them before adding shadows

What the fuck is wrong with you two? Do you not go to the gym because you're intimidated by the big guys there who will notice you? (they don't give a shit btw)

You need to accept that your figures aren't gonna be perfect. But going through the shit is what's going to make you good when you learn and apply what you learn. Otherwise, have fun with your boxes in perspective. Look at all the /beg/ in this thread - they draw even though it's not the best but what's important is they learn from it.

At least this is the vibe you're giving me.

but in order to do that I need to get good at drawing real people from reference
but in order to do that I need to get good at perspective, foreshortening and construction
and finally in order to do that, I need to get good at drawing basic shapes in perspective.
I've done like fifty boxes in perspective a night for a month straight.
