Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Hi /ic/. People here tell me that I should stop symbol drawing. The problem is that I think my non-symbol drawing works are even worse than my symbol drawing works. For example, this Angelina Jolie drawing I did looks nothing like the real person:

I want to dump the drawings I did for keys to drawing so /ic/ can tell me whether or not I did the exercises correctly or whether I should do them again before moving on to chapter 2.
Would that be okay?
This was the first one, my crossed feet, I didn't finish it because my legs started to fall asleep and I didn't think I could get them into the exact same position without changes.

It's ok to take your time while rendering the values, in both drawing it seems like you're rushing to finish the drawing. By the way, do try cross hatching if you haven't. It would also be better if you draw on a piece of paper without lines.

The structure of nose and lips need some work. Try drawing 3/4 view and side view of the head, that might help you understand the structure of the head better.

You need to pay more attention to your block-in stage and wait on rendering the details, otherwise you're just floundering around and turd polishing. Stop it.

When you draw a face, squint. See how the shadows turn into these blurry blocks of color? Lay those out first, big solid blocks of value. You need to really look at your values, so colorpick from your reference ONLY to double check and make sure you're training your eye properly. You should be able to do a greyscale painting's value palette by yourself, if you cheat on this you are learning nothing.

By the way, a shift in value is a shift in plane, never forget that. Start big and work your way down to the small things, getting caught up in this is your worst enemy.

Then go to the next smallest thing, get it laid in right, and then into another level of detail. Your whole painting should progress at the same stage altogether. There's no sense in having this super rendered nose and eyeballs when your eye is drawn to the hair and shoulders that are barely sketched in, they lack values so there's nothing to relate the values in the face to. Also you need to be filling in your ENTIRE background tone, that is your first step once you've refined the sketch, leave zero white space on the canvas.

Go trash this, double check your sketch for accuracy, block-in and work big to small while checking your proportions. Use visual measuring. Then when it's finished you need to block in your values from big to small. Big values down to details.

If you can't draw something accurately yet and find yourself wasting time on it, use a grid and draw it with an initial big sketch just eyeballing it and then go refine from square to square. After that you can go balls deep in the values and forms.

Have a question relating to realistic rendering. I like to make stylized faces which are reliant on the lines to show how the style of the face should look, but I also want to do realistic rendering. When I try to change out the dark lines of mainly the character's eyes the character loses most of what made it unique. Is there a way to keep the original facial lines (around the eyes mainly) and still render realistically? Anyone who does this well with an anime type facial style?

I have a question, when people recommend going through drawabox, do they just mean the first part about form and stuff? Or should you go through the entire thing, plants, animals, anatomy etc?

Just practice. Take it slower. Seeing these videos does not imply that you know how to put the knowledge on paper, because I can still see beginner mistakes (no form, chicken scratches, wrong proportions). Don't stress over it too much, though, it'll come with practice. Good luck!

>>2768392

Why did you say that my drawing has no form? How to think 3D?
>>
>>2768402
That's a tough nut to crack as artists.

Get this book called "How to Draw" by Scott Robertson and get the Dynamic Sketching vol 1 and 2 video courses. You need to be able to visualize objects in a 3D space if you want to be able to correctly put 3D object in a 2D environment.
However, many portrait artists still draw using "2D techniques", which means that they don't have constructive skills, but have great observational skills + hand-eye coordination.

As I said, watch the Proko videos again and again and get "Drawing on the right side of the brain" + "Keys to drawing", do the exercises.

I'm a guy, I don't want to get any more personal (forgot that I had my name in here) Larger eyes are universally accepted as a symbol of femininity, innosense and cuteness, but that does not mean that they will look good as 2D shapes. They should still have form, not matter the proportions.

As the other guy said, just having watched the videos don't mean nothing if you didn't get the concepts. What you need is to do studies, that's how people get better at drawing, get some of the recommended books, and use them.

Also, learn to pick better ref, that picture is so over exposed that it makes it seem as if she has no face, just features floating in white space. It's atrocious. Most celebrity photos are like that so try to stay away from those, get some well lighted portraits instead.

>>
>>2768268
realistic rendering is all about form. figure out what your sylized face should look like in 3d then use that to figure out where the lighting should go
>>
>>2768370
>you picked a hard picture to do a study from. the reason why is that the light is shining so bright right into her face that you can't really see the forms. that being said. the only way to make this look more like the subject is to measure. start by measuring the width and height of the whole picture, does that match your drawing, next measure some of the shapes that make up the picture big shapes to small. always starting with one shape and once that's correct breaking it up into smaller ones.
>>
>>2768485
Nah you can tell this artist knows what they're doing. The point isn't to stop symbol drawing at all, any time you're drawing from imagination you're going to be drawing symbols. The difference is how realistic those symbols are. It's also a problem that beginners often symbol draw while trying to copy a photo. If you're trying to make a realistic portrait of someone you shouldn't be symbol drawing but looking at the reference and drawing what you see.
>>

I dunno about symbol drawing. there is a likeness to the subject so I wouldn't say that. What I would say is that it looks really flat to me. It's not really selling me the idea that these are two 3d people standing in a 3d environment.

I'm not good at this critique thing, but the face looks too long compared to the ref and isn't really in perspective. I also think you could benefit from some harder brushes in some areas like the shadows on the torso - at the moment it looks somewhat out of focus. Looking good though, keep it up!

I drew something in order to force me to infiltrate 3d space to some measure, following a helpful Anonymous' advice from last thread.

So the reference is the small head that is drawn from portrait that posits an unnatural, bi-lateral appearance. How very terrible

In the pic related I tried to draw it using three quarters' perspective to force me to engage with 3d aspects, made it larger to tackle accretion problems, and that other thing he told me to do that I forgot.

I've probably done horribly but can't see where I've failed blatantly. Can some one with skill clarify what it is I'm supposed to be doing?

>>
>>2769094
You need to construct the features in perspective as well.
Study the skull and learn how to construct the features out of basic shapes and lay them on/into the skull shape.

Here's a skull model, draw it until you understand the shape, then start working on features.

Once you understand this you can build a on simplified base like the Loomis head to save time.

Also, if you haven't studied basic shapes yet, do drawabox first.

I think just push the lighting a bit more. Play up the ambient occlusion, maybe throw in a rimlight. Also be sure the cast shadow is consistent with the rest of the lighting, like right now it looks weird that the toad is lit diffusely and the cast shadow is hard edges like it is a direct light source.
>>
>>2769207
how many minutes did that take you and how complex was it? if i might ask.
>>
>>2769153
If they don't know how to draw an eye from reference, they're boned trying to do it from imagination.

Developing your """""style""""" after having solid fundamentals is more or less how much symbol drawing you wanna put in your work anyway.
>>
>>2769214
in theory your imagination should be a 3d model.
>>
>>2769207
that looks awesome! thanks for the tips dude!
>>
>>2769213
I dunno, probably less than 5 minutes but I didn't time it or anything. I just used a soft brush on a soft light layer to get the ambient occlusion in just a few broad strokes, then on a normal layer quickly scribbled a rimlight and then put an overlay layer with a soft brush over the rimlight to make it pop a bit more in colour and brightness. Very simple quick stuff that was done very quickly so didn't take long. On an actual piece to do it cleanly and nicely it might take much much longer. It's worth noting that I'm not a beginner though and have years of experience, so I can work pretty quickly.

Is this block-in too small in terms of brush stroke? It's quite confusing determining how "simple" I should go.

I squinted my eyes.
>>
>>2769251
You shouldn't be blending at all in the block in stage. 100% opacity hard round and try again.
>>
>>2769251
It's fine

>>2769252
Bad advice, there are no hard rules on how to do it, most pros even don't paint 100% opaque at the start
>>
>>2769253
question.
can pros really do page-long lines completely accurately?
>>
>>2769253
It's just for the block-in stage, it helps you see where your values are at and make sure you are thinking in shapes and planes first, then forms after when you blend and detail at the final stage where you render. The reason some pros don't need to is because they've got all that training in already. They understand it and can do it from their head. Beginners have trouble thinking in forms at first (as that anon obviously does from the way he paints) and this is a way to train their eye.

Don't fuck around when you clearly don't know what you're talking about. I didn't say it was the only way to do it, and you can do whatever you'd like, the advice wasn't for you. Anon can take it or leave it as well.
If you're going to put in your two cents that's fine but do the whole thread a favor and give the artist critiques and alternatives backed up with logic, maybe offer some exercises, rather than just being a salty little shit taking his insecurities out on everyone. Go whine in the bitch thread and get it out of your system.

>>2769251

>>
>>2769271
Yep, I tried. I'm actually that same person he replied to. At this point I think it's just the process of training my eye to see values + the bigger picture with harder colors. It looks so effortlessly done with that apple.
>>

Yeah practicing with values that way is going to help. Try putting a black and white filter over pictures to see what the colors translate to as values, by the way.

I know people like to ~meme~ over it but Loomis is where you want to go with this. The other anon was right, you're not constructing basic shapes and it's pretty clear you're stuck on symbol drawing
>>
You know what's frustrating to me? I go online and try to go out of my way research what the best books and tutorials are on getting good fast at digital painting. I try to see if there's a school with a good reputation. Or some online program.

And you know what I find? Nothing but a bunch of youtube channels and websites run by mediocre artists clogging the shit up out of my googling to figure out where the best place is to get good at this shit. I don't want to waste my time studying in a way that is less effective than studying another way. Does anybody fucking know what the best way is to get good at digital art? What books do I need to read? Who the fuck do I need to learn from? Fuck.

Actually if you keep drawing from reference your brain never learns how to draw from imagination only

That is why people drawing from reference suck at drawing from imagination and think drawing from imagination is impossible. It's more than possible. You can draw almost photorealistically with perfect anatomy with your imagination if you want to.

I understand that. What I'm saying is beginners have no idea how things -really- work and look like. A lot don't realize this but once they have that down they can stylize without looking amateur. From imagination too, if they wanted to.

im starting to learn how to properly learn how to use colors for the first time, I was trying to use something triadssomethingsomething with three main colors but it just looked so weird until I added a bit of pale yellow, so in the picture total are magenta, purple and pink plus yellow, what going on?

also face looks like picasso horror ehe...
>>
Is this "good" for only one and a half years of experience? I'm trying to study different poses and anatomy and then I'll move on to the human face as I struggle quite a bit with it.
(My own work, because I'm trash.)

I'm not sure if I can ask this in this thread but here I go anyway, if I'm wrong please correct me to the right thread.

I'm looking for a brush for Clip Studio Paint for coloring or shading like this card here. Check the clothes and hair.

I don't know if it's because some brushes in Clip Studio don't work like in SAI where the colors there actually mix together.
>>
>>2770128
Give me that card bro
>>
Does anybody know any good, fundamental tutorials or book pages on how to draw hair? I can't find any.

Thanks a bunch!
>>
>>2770109
It's all very generic. The chibi proportions, the "fuck it" clothes and shoes, the lack of variation between character designs. Yawn.

Look at actual cats and rabbits, study them, then apply some of what you learned.

I'm not trying to make excuses, I know I suck hardcore at art and I'm terrible, but my sketches look extra shitty compared to my finished ones.(pic is something finished from me)

Someone is trying to get me to draw in his style for personal reasons, and I'm having a lot of trouble nailing it.

This is his art. His actually look cute, and mine look like trash. He's telling me to add things like hairstyles and "big anime eyes" though, and it's just a headache.
>>
>>2770256
fujoshi confirmed
>>
>>2770256
His work looks better (but not significantly so) due to its proportions. Adjusting those will make a big difference.
>>
>>2770256
heres the difficult thing with anime/cartoon facial features that you arent understanding. its tough to explain so ill just tell you the steps

work out what the geometry of the face looks like, contour it over and over in different positions. after that paste your eyes and such as if they are stickers onto them, then give them as much 3d elevation as you want for your style.

the thing about anime eyes is they are supposed to be kind of symbol drawn, anime eyes are the only thing i would say it is correct to somewhat symbol draw. but also they have to be good. for that reason people take a strange kind of half measure. its tough to do so just try and understand all the parts of it then scrape them together into some semblance of a whole. all the while aesthetics in mind.

my opinion right now is that. im just a beginner though so take what i say with salt.

It would be great if you first learn to train your eyes and stop "drawing symbols", then you move on to Loomis, check the sticky, read the first book about what i talked here.

If you use the new google PhotoScan app you can scan your drawn image straight to your cloud in hq, takes a few short minutes to get a perfect high quality image for photoshop.
