I drew this last night to cheer my
wife
up.

I would really appreciate feedback on this piece and maybe some techniques to improve. I struggle with hands and especially feet a lot. Proportions are off on purpose but I still would love a few pointers because that's still a major flaw.

Thanks
>>
>>2767446
>Proportions are off on purpose
No no no. Your anatomy is off on purpose, it's unrealistic and that can be fine to mess with if you know what you're doing. But your proportions? They are what keep your drawing consistent, measurements you take to make sure that things are the same in relation to themselves. Like making sure the arms are the same length, the head to body ratio is what you need, and that you're adjusting everything more or less as you should for the size changes.

You have to learn the rules before you can break them and make it look good.
>>
>>2767448
Thanks for the correction, I like be "expressive" with anatomy. But yeah, great point about proportions.

I don't know what the rules are and I want to learn but I'm so clueless about what I'm doing. If you would, could you point me in a direction and I'll begin to teach myself like with a known guide or technique for improvement?
>>
>>2767446
>>2767456

>muh style

No, it's not "on purpose" just badly drawn.

No
>>
>>2767457
It's badly drawn but the thing you warp for style is anatomy, not proportion. proportions are relevant no matter what you are doing, anatomy is not after you learn it and can break those rules.

>>2767456
Learn actual anatomy. There's this anatomy for sculptors book that is really good, pretty sure it's always in the artbook thread. Start with drawing skeletons and look into bridgman's book on constructing anatomy using forms. Then after you've got the basic skeleton down start drawing muscles on top of them. Learn where the attach and what their purpose is.

Proportion is going to be in any artist's anatomy book, learn about it and learn how to do visual measuring.

Work on your linework, too. A good draftsman is a good painter, you're going to need that skill. And most importantly, do gesture drawings every day. These will train your eye as well as help with your stiff poses, anatomy issues, proportion, and sketch quality.
>>
>>2767464
>proportions are relevant no matter what you are doing, anatomy is not after you learn it and can break those rules.
i mean that proportion is always relevant to itself. It is literally the size of one thing in relation to another thing. Like the fact that the length of your foot is approximately the length of your forearm.

Even if you change the rules in proportion, they still need to be consistent in relation to each other.
>>
>>2767457
Yeah... I'm not going to argue over this but I do want to learn if you're willing to help.

I want to learn

Wow, great palette! Just don't be afraid to touch edges, anon, there are lots of tiny empty spaces.
Also the foreshortening on the reindeer's legs looks a bit off but that might be because of the lack of blending.

I've finally realized that unless my forms are ran in perspective the contour lines never be right. The shadows they cast will never truly be correct.

It's impossible when you're running your mind around the wrong idea that you've received through an incorrect observation.

I finally get why perspective is so important when it comes to organic forms. No one ever explicitly stated it, but now I know what my issue was. They'd say my mental thought when it comes to form is weak, or they'd say my perspective is very poor, but they'd never stress how perspective and forms are intertwined. I've been screwing up by studying either form or perspective for hours when I really needed to look at both at the same time and the relation between them.

The next time I see someone do this I'll be sure to save them a load of trouble.

I didn't really know the importance of perspective until I did references to get an objective view of a form and I had to wrap contour lines around a cylinder in accordance with its orientation relative to the vanishing point/horizon line.

I guess I've finally fixed my biggest issue.

I had always believed limbs can operate almost independent of the horizon line until I started looking at how axis's rotate in perspective.

So much information from such a shitty fuck-up.

Draw-a-box man is so full of shit.
His boxes are only good to a certain extent.
I now see why there are people that run through his course and his course alone and still draw like shit a year later.

Once I get good enough, I'm going to create my own version of draw-a-box that really teaches people what they need to know.

I've seen people that can do his purported "necessary" action of ellipse rotation/combining forms/boolean, but I've seen new masters of it completely fuck up when it comes to drawing human beings.

I'm glad I've recently seen someone else flounder after taking the equivalent of Peter Han's Drawing Courses/Draw-a-box. I knew it was stupid to keep running imaginary contour lines, and that it's only good for a beginner's lesson.

Started a new project today.

Gonna be drawing The Godfather. I've done stuff like this before but they were smaller thumbnails, very rough. This time I'm going big, on 11x17" paper with approximately 5x9.25" frames (this first page has frames a little wider, 5x10").

My goals are to become comfortable at this size, to develop a better understanding of composition, gesture and value, to improve my aptitude at brush inking and marker coloring, to build the habit of drawing every day and hopefully discover my own style.

Unfortunately right now I'm working on printer paper instead of bristol so it immediately becomes crinkly as fuck and the markers don't blend so well, but maybe when it's all said and done I can redo it on bristol.

apply methods such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fww9L7XH8Qg
suggests.
Say you have this design. Consider introducing an element/rule to your design. So for example he's known as "the lion" because of his fight prowess. So you try a few designs where you introduce a lion shield, an emblem, or an helmet.
you do stuff like that, and try a way to iterate quickly so you can do a bunch of them, until you're out of juice.
Then you pick the elements that work best.

Hello, /ic/!
I've been skimming around in read-only for a while; I have scrolled through sticky and picked up some stuff from there back then. Though, every time i open it up again, I get dazzled by how much stuff there is always up to explore.
...To the point I doubt I have any idea where to go! And yet there's still a lot to learn to reach the level around cool academists and/or well-paid Patreon artists... (just to abandon it all and claim that I want to do Artâ„¢ in my own manner)
So far I see that I either make rough 3/4s in my sketchbook, try to make something a little more complicated, dropping it almost at the start (pic related: I don't even want to refine it!) or, or...? I guess I'm just kinda lazy to think of all the nuances a picture should have, but when I think of how much there are, my hands just drop down. All while I look at a picture and realize it doesn't take TOO much to be done, even an overly refined one!
Anyway. In the end, I want to grow up of sketches and drafts to something more consistent, but I'm pretty much confused! Besides, my interest doesn't usually get caught up by... well, anything to think of it and work on, so I don't pay much attention to nature, environment or something like so; so does my imagination, as I personally can't come up with a flying worm-dragon who annihilates brave elf ladies with a beam out of it's mouth, spewing thick juicy saliva all around in a space with cookies instead of stars and whatever else cool modern cartoons come up with.
>>

It's clear you have some understanding of the anatomy; muscles are mostly in the right places and are defined properly, you're not just making up forms and faking it. The issues here are mainly with perspective both in terms of foreshortening and overlapping forms which you're hesitating to do in places it needs to be done like the front shoulder. The pecs are in line with each other but are at an angle to the rest of the torso as if they were a door on a hinge and someone was opening his chest. The legs and feet are also unaligned with each other so they look like they're resting on two surfaces of differing height rather than one plane. I'd recommend you practice boxes with perspective guidelines, then other geometric shapes in perspective, then drawing organic shapes and figures inside those boxes matching their perspective.

>>2769463
He's allowed to say whatever he feels fit
>>
>>2769518
i think the problem stems from the headshape in general, the hair makes the skull look massive. the eyes look very 2d while the nose (which looks pretty good imo) is very 3d. the mouth is a little too small and it should probably be slightly lower on the face. the head is a bit big in relation to the shoulders by itself, the (from the viewers perspective) left arm looks too short (its smaller than the head) it should stick out of the frame of the drawing. hand should be a bit smaller, the lower hand (right hand from the viewers perspective) is way smaller, and for that one i only recommend practicing hands more. the hand itself would be out of the frame too. dont try to squish everything into your format if it doesnt fit. the shading of the gold ornament on her head looks nice, but the random gold spikes coming from her hair lack that. (maybe making them into a crown/hair ornament thing rather than being random would help.)
one more thing: practice hair direction. the random hairstrands sticking out from her head dont look great. if it was just the hair with a few strands flowing in the wind or something it might work better.

this time i wrote a fuckton. hope thats ok. maybe when im home from work i could redline a bit but i dont have my tablet rn.
otherwise, good luck w your painting mang

I don't think the pure white background is doing this any favors. It doesn't feel like the character is in a blaring-white room- replacing the white with even some shade of gray and some bounce light might remedy how he feels to be floating on an empty canvas as opposed to a physical setting.
Digging the sunken, empty eye sockets vibe, though.
>>
>>2769988
I kind of liked it more when it was rougher and had texture and brush strokes. I think you should've only refined a few places like the face areas and maybe the deer's outstretched foreleg. I miss the border too, it was shaping up to have this sort of old timey illustration vibe. Something like an art nouveau type of style? I can't pinpoint it but hopefully you get what I mean.

It looks like an explosion instead of a sunset because it is just a big ball of light. Maybe try getting more of a horizontal thing going on, more gradients, some clouds shapes etc. The blue parts of the sky would be lighter too I think, actually in general I feel the scene would be lighter. People have skewed understandings of sunsets because of photography, but the human eye has great exposure ranges so sunsets are filled with light.

Her eyes are too large.
They might be placed too high up her head as they are supposed to be in the middle of her head.
Try drawing a skull so you get the right placement. Her chin is too pointy.
Try drawing yourself in a mirror paying attention to detail and placement of eyes, nose, chin, etc.
>>
>>2770335
I think you are taking it in a good direction. Although the hair has reflected light in the back, and the face does not show the same reflection.
The eyes are a little large. In most all people they are never exactly the same size/shape.

Is this an oil painting? Looks good although a few things.
The line work on the pears. You should overlap the edge because in nature there are no such edges. Same with the apple.
The shadow cast from the vase should be more a projection of the blue color of the liquid the flowers are in.
Good work on the cast shadow on the pear.

A fineliner has a stiffer and thinner nib that is best used for small details and technical drawing.

A brush pen has a softer and broader nib that is best suited for laying down larger black shapes and more organic drawing.

In the third pic, the humerus is way too short and the hand way too small. Look up Hale's measuring system, learn it, use it.
Use the natural gesture of the bones. Ulna has a beautiful S curve to it - to find it, think of anconeus as pulling the ulna towards the lateral epicondyle on the humerus.

Keys to drawing, Fun with a pencil, Drawabox, in this order. Don't worry about anatomy, it won't make your wacky drawings any better at this stage. Don't draw people just yet, start with simple objects or plants where you actually know all the forms instead of guessing them.

>>2770247
Dude, that's not how it works. Watch Vandruff's perspective series, it'll teach you vanishing traces and all that jazz.
However, you don't run lines off to the distance for every box you draw. You just draw the Y shape for the corner that's the closest to you and then lay down the remaining 3 sets of converging lines. As you draw more and more and learn perspective in depth, you'll get a hang of how much distortion needs to be applied without breaking the illusion.
>>
>>2771139
Can I skip Keys to Drawing? This shit is depressing me. I don't want to draw my hand with the fingers facing me for 20 minutes. I get it, I really do. I just don't want to do this boring shit. Can't they make it more fun? (Can I please skip this book?)

no, im generaly really happy with it. worth the money. it sometimes skips a line at the beginning, but if you do some doodles first its aight. Light, doesnt make your hand tired. Lies good in hand, ergonomic is the word i guess

Honestly I had the same problem and I just kep drawing and it got better. I also did the initial sketch at 350 to train my hand. Draw from the shoulder and get confident lines, I know its hard at first but keep at it. You get called a chickenscratching faggot enough and it WILL push you to get good. Now goodluck anon, you're going to make it.
>>
>>2772553
well, it's a bit hard and weird but it's kinda working and i think i can get the hang of it.
>>2772556
I really need to train using my shoulder, specially because i suck at making long lines. Thanks a lot for the tip and morale boost, anon :3
>>
>>2772532
learn how to be more patient. I used to have the same problem. in time you will push your boundaries of knowledge and some day you will find yourself looking again, how to become better. Work zoomed out for your progress of the image, get your image down real nice get your tones and everything in, to the point where it could be finished. That being said, now is where you learn patience , now is where you truly start to learn again, now you zoom in and tighten your focal points with good lines, thoughtful brush strokes, blending your tones together. You'll get there. Just keep at it.
>>
>>2772648
Thanks a lot for the insight on this, i think i can get used to this

Okay I was making a little guy for a webcomic which I'll probably never make, but I got caught up on his colors. Two palettes in particular I really like, but they remind me so much of already existent characters. Who in the hell is it that I'm thinking of and more importantly, would you let this guy into your house? And what if he invited you to his?

the boring stiff pose can work if that's the sort of strict uptight character she is. her right hand seems a bit small and the way her hair falls on her right side along her right arm and shoulder is a bit weird, might take away from how well the character silhouette reads design wise.

I like the nice simple design but I feel the boob window is a bit dumb. I'd suggest closing it with a symbol or insignia related to whatever nation or empire she belongs to (as she seems royalty-esque).
