You have all this nice rendering in the light...but then the shadow is suuper flat.
Use the blue skylight to show upward facing planes, and a saturated warm tone as the ground's reflected light hitting and downward facing planes.

Don't lose the form in the shadow.

wow, I just saw that it's supposed to have four arms.
one of the reasons you didn't get much comments is that there isn't much positive things the /ic/ crowd might think about it. There are no fundamentals, but plenty of autistic muh sytle to try to compensate. However all this muh style is making things worse, because it's so cluttered and unreadable.
If you were to learn to draw, at some point you'll learn about detail density, making primary forms, secondary and tertiary levels of details. These are rule of thumbs so they can be broken when you're very good, but beginners should follow them.
All of that is way further down the road, your next milestone should be: loomis.

Thanks. Forgot to mention the eyebrows, but hadn't seen the shoulder that way
>>
>>2773161
its messy to say the least. its kinda cool with how the mutliple arms are positioned, but its getting all lost on the overly complicated machinery. i think maybe you should employ a "gradient of detail" if you plan on doing anything similar to this again. what i mean by that is, at least in regards to this particular piece, the picture should be getting LESS complicated the closer to the torso certain parts of the body are. the torso is the most simply drawn, so its jarring when you get to the hips and find all this complicated exposed machinery. either simplify the machinery a small amount around there, or remove it completely.

also work on your shading, its way too hard to tell the arms from the torso, or that there are more than 4 arms to begin with. good effort, but its a mess to look at.

In my opinion:

1. Crop it

2. There is a missed opportunity to separate the foreground (figure) and the background (inside), and this is easily done through values. Attached is a B&W, quickly (and poorly) done example of that, but hopefully it gives you an idea. You make the foreground darker and make the inside lighter.

As it stands, the foreground is too similar to the background in values.

Does that make sense? Hope that helps!
>>
>>2773231
YOU ARE A FUCKING SAINT! fucking hell i knew i was making a fundamental mistake somewhere.

the explanation makes perfect sense to me, though im not going to crop it just yet for the simple fact that im planning on putting some stuff there (stair case, a bit more background and another figure). regardless, the help is very appreciated.
>>
>>2773246
For sure! No problem. Cropping it is more of a personal preference, but if you've got other stuff you want to add, go for it!

In general, it's "safest" to have the foreground of a piece have the most contrast (ie. the darkest darks and the lightest lights), especially if there needs to be a clear separation of space between the foreground and background. That's why so many standard concept art pieces are darker in the foreground, and lighter in the background, even if it doesn't make sense for "atmospheric perspective" to come into play.
>>
>>2773201
>>2773228
The ninja himself is really desaturated compared to the rest of the scene. I know ninjas are supposed to be hard so see, but...
>>
>>2773285
thats a fair point. guess ill start working on desaturating the inside and saturating the ninja a bit.
>>
>>2773305
That's not totally necessary. Again - the problem is not the colors - its the VALUE of the colors. The ninja is not hard to see because of the saturation, but because of the low-contrast between the ninja and the space behind it.

its such a hell hole. you say even one slightly negative thing and they all turn on you. if i said "it's just a prank bro" i'd get downvoted to hell.

one time i posted a figure drawing, just any other normal figure drawing, and i titled it "I bet this only get's 5 upvotes", and it did. and the thread was flooded with "WE DID IT REDDIT" type bullshit.

it makes me hate the internet. it makes me want to just rip off stalenhag's work as blatantly as i can for upvotes just cause fuck them.

I think one of the reasons why they do not like people giving out criticism, is that they don't want to get it themselves. Everyone there can barely draw and they all want to live in a world where no-one points them out on it -it's depressing how much denial there is.
>>
>>2773582
that's the case really blatantly once in a while. something really mediocre will get to the top of the front page just because it's relatable. people think "I could do that, and look how popular it got" and it snowballs from there.

it's that horrible adage of "if it's so easy why didn't you do it" but the answer is always "BECAUSE IT'S EASY YOU IDIOTS"
>>
>>2773553
you call reddit a hell hole, but you care about downvotes and post your shit there. you don't like the type of people that post there, yet your personality is no less disgusting.

He/She doesn't care about the social currency of downvotes, more the vapid denial-infused hive-mind that encourages people to use them on what would be genuinely fair criticism or alternative artwork. He/she's sick off the fostered mentality that mediocre is great and that people shouldn't own their ineptitude.
Sadly for them, real life is nothing as soft and fluffy as their life on a subreddit.

because of the straight hatching for what is exterior, I find it really hard to distinguish between details of ridges the tentacle also loses depth the further up it goes and I feel like the suckers should be done in a similar way to the hole in the middle, in a way that goes with the curvature of the form.

tl;dr idk make the shade curve

ease up with the highlights on the face, looks a bit too shiny. give her eyes something to focus on, they're currently just staring blankly into space. fiddling with the eyebrows could also really give life to her expression without you having to redo any major parts of the face.

It's impressive that that all came from your imagination, but at the same time the realism comes at the expense of it looking very interesting or alive. maybe play with the hue and saturation a bit to get rid of the corpse colors.

Can't tell whether the blurriness of your edges is entirely due to the shitty picture you've taken or not.
The shading on the skin and the roses makes them look muddy.
I'm not even sure what's going on, is someone abandoning their child in a forest, covering it with leaves? What's the blown out white thing? Looks like a dead cuttlefish.

im back. had some major creative blocks to overcome so updates took a bit longer than i would have hoped. contrast was pretty meh and it didnt really pop in a good way. i think i was too focused on the purple beams from earlier and not enough on the surrounding objects that would, you know, influence how they appear to you. still unsure but im starting to feel more confident in my color choices. or more complacent, i dont know. this is a weird feeling...

>>2775883
the flatness was doing a disservice to the overall structure, because nothing was clearly defined. the poles were blending in with the floors a bit, but they also not framing it how i wanted, because the guard just sort of disappears into nothing at a glance. ill definitely try something with some flat colors next time, but for such an angular drawing i think have so many similar colors is going to kind of shit it up. also im going to change that red, its starting to grate on me i just realized. too bright.

Anon I love this idea! And it's pretty good.
Some stuff you should do in my opinion, make his hat, coat and skin a bit warmer in color, because of the green it looks a little bit dead right now. Tweak and try it : )
The angle of the nose right now, you have your face pointing one direction, it's good, but his nose is pointing a little bit too much to the right, it;s also small tweaks.
The shadows should be darker! You need more contrast in there man, I love low contrast pieces, but right now it's too low, put a very very dark dark between the hat and his hair, then use it to tweak the other values!

Keep going I like it! And hope I was helpful

You're only getting the silhouette inside this green box. His legs blend into the pillar and make his silhouette pretty unrecognizable at a glance. He should really hang further out to help with that problem, also to help differentiate him from the rest of the very vertical elements of the composition. Right now he seems very stiff. It could also help if his head was actually turned towards his target, and not just off to stage right.
Also I've circled a number of little annoying overlaps. If you're going with this kind of illustrative style, that's something to pay close attention to.

The problem isn't just with colors or values, it's the composition that's very static in itself. The changes you're making are very minor and you seem to have hit a roadblock. Try sketching out a new composition with the same subject matter, but go crazy with it. Make the ninja stand out, but not with color. Black and white. Diagonals, bam boom. Look up some ninjas in crazy poses. Make him zig while the world around him stays zagged. Or he quietly zags on a pillar as the world zigs around him.
>>
>>2776092
these are pretty good, but the key figures in your drawings dont stand out. the elk/elf combo should be a little darker to contrast the light background, the giant too. you get what i mean? contrast

Also I decided to go ahead and make a sketch of my own to maybe jog some ideas to get you out of this rut.

Ninjas are crafty. They got grapples and shit. Use this to your advantage when making your composition.
Also I realize in my sketch he's pretty much IN the walkway according to the approaching line. That's something to fix. But that's the fun of illustration. Figuring out a way to fit your figures into the composition. Composition comes first. It immediately portrays an idea or motion. Your subject matter should fit into it like puzzle pieces.
>>
>>2776084

Not bad. I like the idea, its drawn aight. On the subject of shading tho; you use the thickest lines where should the light be. its confusing. You could also use thinner lines on the hatching- work on the line wieght.

Still had to scroll it tho.

>>2776161
I think I liked it so much because it referenced the background of the piece, alluding to either snow or dust or whatever. It gave the character a connection to his environment, which is ironically more present in the unfinished piece than it is in the current one.

>>2776461
>>2776462
I think he's complaining about the super saturated colors in the distance compared to the unsaturated figure. I think the tengu himself was colored excellently before, but then the subtle blue tones you added to him are throwing me off. I see that you're trying to connect him to his environment, but it seems like an artificial method -- why are his clothes catching that light -- are they reflective -- is the blue earth around him really glowing?

I definitely appreciate the effort, but it looks like you've smooshed two ideas together. You need to understand where your character actually "is", and have a good reason for why. Perhaps he does live in this strange world you've painted, but we need more visual connection -- maybe something to create an ironic connection and maybe that could stem from some kind fo social commentary. Otherwise he's unironically out of place and that just leaves the viewer confused and not in an "I want to know more" kind of way.
>>
>>2776474
yeah I see what you mean, admittedly I do just randomly throw colors around without much thought

Back (or still here) with a few ideas:
A trail of footprints or even feathers that he's following
A pagoda on the far side of the cliff
Maybe the rocks DO glow and he's got some glowing dust on his jacket

>>2776478
Random colors are a great way to get ideas started. And that's because it's not "random", you've chosen them with your subconscious. Now that you're already started on that path, follow your intuition and try exploring the setting you've created/stumbled upon. What's there, who's there, why are they there, when is it?

Even talking about it now is getting me thinking creatively. Giant slabs of lapis lazuli, a modern tengu, something something...

Very nice.

Thing is, the person on the right is the point. It's a symbolic scene. It's of course going to be a challenge making it work. I'll have to figure out the balance of style vs space, but I'll keep the rule of thirds in mind. Thank you.

Either way, I'm definitely trying to add a sense of depth. Your smoke effects are great, but I'm not sure how I can use them to make the space feel even more vast. Some of the blobs I had placed probably betray the scale I'm trying to achieve.

If anyone could post some really crazy fantastical landscapes or caves that might help. I need to rife through ever trick in the book for atmospheric distance so I can find the ones I can incorporate into a cohesive style. Thank you very much though. I wasn't expecting a paintover at this stage.

Well, I need to stop thinking and actually get back to making things now.

Post your work?
Who knows, maybe you need to focus on another aspect. After a book it's always wise to do some (more) still life. Also you may want to draw from imagination, just to stand out what you have learned so far. This will help you to find your next goal.

>>
>>2777251
not that anon but most of your paintings are I think from ref and in grey scale which isn't bad at all but try to do more imaginative paintings in color then comparing it to real life and what you learned from the book hopefully you will start to see tremendous improvement.

there's no point in starting a perspective drawing without a proper grid.
place your VPs and you'll get a redline for free.
