Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

How does one define a gesture?

What makes a gesture different than a construction? I'm trying to learn the differences as I was told my previous 'gestures' were not 'gestures' but more along the lines of construction.

I'm trying not to 'construct' just yet. I watched some proko and tried a few references for 'gesture' are these better?

When I construct my art comes out too rigid. I'm trying to understand the concept of 'gesture' for fluidity an motion.
>>
Hey guys is drawing on the right side of the brain a good book?
>>
>>2754987
Those are already better than the previous ones you posted. What separates gesture from construction is gesture is the feel, and construction is more geared towards refinement. Just keep working on your gestures and your figures will feel more lifelike.

its impossible to get a straight answer out of anyone.

A gesture drawing is a contour sketch, normally of a figure in motion, or emulating motion.

Good gestural drawing is considered to have exaggerated form and movement while still being naturalistic.

Since the art of simulating movement using soft transitions in value has been ignored for a while, good gesture is also considered to be in its prime when it has little to no rendering.

And yes, most artists have very, very poor articulation about their processes.

I had the exact same mindset and frustration as you for three whole months of incorrect gestures.

It'll take time and it'll click.
>>
>>2754987
I'm no expert, but I understand gesture as movement towards a point(s). For instance, recoiling and lunging are two different gestures because all the action of the figure is going forward and backwards, respectively.

You need to measure better. Compare your drawing and the ref: head too tilted to the left, nose too low, and downright wrong angles all along the cheek.

http://www.dorian-iten.com/accuracy/

Go through that. Anon linked it in >>2753704 and it was crazy helpful. Your next drawing from ref will be a whole lot better.
>>
>>2755196
>>2755195
or you could just go through KTD again
>>
>>2755189
Honestly, work in traditional.

Keep in mind that line conveys value, and value conveys form, so your lines are currently conveying a whole lot that isn't there.

Spend way, way, way more time in the construction phase. Measure twice, cut once, after all, and your preliminaries were off from the get go (just look at the head tilt, or lack thereof).

Also read keys to drawing and loomis or whatever the fuck. Read something.

Your model seem to have very smooth variations in the light and in the dark, it is not good for value study. If you want to work on your value, try a sculpture with a large panel of greys.
If you prefere to work on drawing, take a model in this thread, put a 3*3 grid on your reference, do the same on your canvas. Use only line, no shading. You win when your lines match the reference. Enjoy.

The end of the sleeve of her arm holding the letter kills the foreshortening, that circle at the end and the wrinkles of the sleeve is suggesting that her arm is flexing down rather than in front of her. Change them so the sleeve looks like the arm is aiming at the front rather than under her.

Tip for foreshortening and hands. Has someone played a prank like "did you that if your hand is bigger than your face means you have cancer (then proceeded you slap your face with your hand in it)"?. Well it turns out that our hands are almost the same size as our face (kids and babies are the only exception). That right hand looks like an anorexic baby hand. And as for the foreshortened hands when in front position they are always almost the same size as our entire head (rather than just our face).

Both arms have fucked up wrists. When foreshortening a hand, the palm still sticks out because of the curvature. The other wrist is to thin you can probably break it just by touching it. The wrist size is almost always the same size as our hand grip (try graving your wrist with one of your hands or with one of your fingers and your thumb).

Her torso is fucked up. A torso is usually 4 heads tall, in the fourth head is supposed to go the ass and genitalia.

How do I get out of the phase of drawing everything flat? I try to draw shapes in perspective but I suck ass at it. No matter how in perspective I try to draw things everything still looks flat. This is by far the biggest hurdle for me so far. Faces, limbs, everything looks flat. I can add value to make it less bad, but things are still pretty flat looking in the end. The worst part is that I don't notice it until about a week after I finish the art and look back at it. Everything looks acceptable until then. Yes I flip the canvas a million times.

I like it, but you should mind some minor rules like, the eyes should start after the line of the nose's max width and one of the eyes is larger than the other.
I'd also argue about the mouth being too wide, but that seems more like a deliberate choice of yours.

>>
i'm having a rough time getting started. i understand that drawing what I see is the important thing. Like, using the keys to drawing, not symbol drawing, and drawing from the shoulder are important habits. but I can't stop myself from getting paranoid that I'm going to spend 3 months reinforcing shitty technique and not actually improving. I mean, I get I can't get gud without practicing, but I don't want to practice poorly.

I crave a structure that I want to put together (Loomis, Keys, Robinson, Proko) but I just don't know how or if I should piece something together.

As far as goals go I want to get paid for drawing, and just like attention for my art in general.
I think what's getting to me is doing this for years and still consulting beginner threads
>>
>>2755948
You're thinking too hard. You'll make mistakes, but that's part of the journey. Have fun doing art.

This quote by Jennifer Egan is what finally got me started (She's a writer but it works with any type of practice in my opinion). It's so simple yet so true.

"You can only draw regularly if you’re willing to draw badly. Accept bad drawing as a way of priming the pump, a warm-up exercise that allows you to draw well"
>>
>>2755915

That's where /ic/ argumentation usually ends. There's nothing necessairly wrong, you should rather think about edges of color, due to the way you paint transitions are too sharp.

His advice about going grayscale is kinda good because it just means that it's easier to see value there. Proper values is what usually makes a drawing and creates a sense of depth, human eye tends to make 3D with value not with color.
>>
>>2755966
Years and that is your work? I'm clueless as to your work ethic, where you started, and what you learned but it looks to me as though you spent more time on things you wanted to draw compared to things you need to draw - studies and such.
>>
>>2755974
I know right, it's pissing me off that I'm realizing that now.
Well, I guess all I can do is go back to the basics. I drew that few days ago but the rest of that sketch book is just gesture drawings and anatomy practice.

I agree with him discipline helps>>2755863

another thing that can help you is having concrete goals to work towards. to use soccer as an example, "today I will spend 30 minutes practicing my shooting skills". when you have a defined goal like that it won't matter if you miss all your shots because that was never the goal. the goal was simply to take shots and learn something

it happens when you dont (((know))) the object, since your horizon and points tell you where all the edges are its pretty easy to (((know))) it. so i think its not common.

Alright I'm going to ask a stupid question but how the fuck do I go about learning from the artbooks? I read the sticky and about how I can skip the pseudo-science and such but I'm still a bit confused. Obviously for a below amatuer "Artist" like myself, I'm on Keys to Drawing.

Again, It's a stupid question. I don't care if you guys call me a tard, I just want to get better.

Well that depends, are you training to do shit from imagination or are you observational through and through, old school style? For the former, fucking yes. Simplify as much as you fucking can else you don't have a chance in hell of replicating it.

Am I gonna make it? Did this in ArtRage SP, I couldn't get a good brush going to do the light effects properly, gonna do the next one in Krita.
On a scale of 1 to 10, how is the rendering in general?

here's this. im not to worried about the head/face or even the hands. just the proportions/anatomy/muscles. how do they look?
>>
>>2756322
pretty good, draw something in a more normal scenario, underwater is foreign so its tough to instinctual tell whether its right. good dark underbelly though. also where its eyes at.
>>
>>2756325
ok listen up you. STOP colouring your figures until you can simply draw them properly. STOP posting here every thread whilst ignoring every bit of advice we give you. FUCKING do drawabox and train your 3d skils. do figure drawing by loomis too. i dont want to see you post here again until you've done those things, and not a shitty "i've skimmed through this once now i can go back to /beg/ and post my shitty drawings again" fucking practise the drills until you can do it. then try again. then come back.

Thanks. I chose the whale because I wanted something with an easily identifiable color palette. I think I'll do some black and white stuff to improve my values. The eyes are in front and below the white spots, but it wasn't visible in the reference so I left it out as well. It's tiny, dark and below the terminator.

wut i got two responses and one said it needs a bigger dick and other said im supposed to measure with the cranium instead of the head which is wrong. according to this overlay my anatomy is acceptable so that leaves me with my anatomical knowledge. i GUESS i could show that through a drawing but no one bothered addressing that. i feel like i was able to notice more features than usual and i used references to help with some. i dont get why youre so salty about me posting so much. youre more than welcome to ignore my posts.

>>2756338
Do you not see that your torso is too long? And not wasting your time rendering an ill constructed sketch is good advice regardless.
>>
>>2756341
i did just notice that but i know id be off somewhere so i said acceptable, not perfect. anyways are the muscles okay? i got bored with keys and decided to test myself

I tried again with your tips and it went better I think. What I envy the most from you is your lines. How do you get such confident, beautifully smooth and curvy lines? Am I supposed to use my elbow or my wrist? Slower gestures or quick, large strokes?

So I tried to do this, did some good things, and some terrible things, then went over and literally traced over it to try and understand. Why does it look like absolute shit even when traced over?
>>
>>2756435
Because you have no confident lines. Look at it, you scribbled all over the place, skipped details even. Grab a stabilized brush and try again. To get the right curves, it helps to start a line earlier and finish it later and then erase what you don't need. And make them thin.
Also, it's just a sketch - flat as fuck. Add values with hatching or render it.
