There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj
>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.
TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.
OLD THREAD: >>2748264
How shitty is it to do one and two point perspective practise from photos? The weather's pretty shitty outside and I live in a cramped box.
so to summaries:
circles on squares in perspective
tall cylinders in perspective
filling in of arbitrary outlines with rings
applying upturned pins to drawn shapes
drawing rings through donut shapes
line practise
shapes on shapes
anything im missing?
What's a good way to get better at determining and applying value? Just keep drawing and it'll come naturally or is there a good exercise I can use?
>>2750855
Try to break what are you trying to apply value to into planes, it will be easier to determine where is ligher or darker.
Pic related.
I'm learning form intersections from Drawabox, and it feels like they haven't made it clear when it comes to combining rounded forms together (like merging one 3D sphere with another).
Is there a part that I have missed, or is there a better way for me to understand form construction somewhere else?
ah yes hmmmm...
very interesting....
jk i understand nothing
>>2750949
Just diagrams of mapping people in perspective. This is why most of the suggestions are to start Keys-Perspective-Loomis.
What you see is much more complex looking than it actually is.
Anyway. Loomis covers this a bit in Fun With A Pencil, I believe.
>>2750956
this book is literally by loomis tho, it's his figure drawing one
>>2750961
Yes. I know. Figure Drawing For All Its Worth.
The one I reference is another one he made: Fun With A Pencil. It's about using shapes for construction.
>>2750949
Perspective is easy as fuck m8, did you not do 2-point and 3-point perspective in Art at school?
I can draw decently on paper but I'm really shit at drawing on a tablet. How can I fix this?
>>2751015
By drawing more on a tablet.
>>2750778
Someone pleace answer this. Can I do point-perspective practise from photos?
Trying to learn how to draw feet better; I spent a minute on each of these to try and get a feel for the form but I'm still struggling on certain angles, particularly when the foot is tilted so that the sole is visible.
Can anyone give me any pointers that might help? I've already watched/read several guides but could use a more experienced eye to identify problems...
>>2751095
that's 53 feet. do 500 more and you won't have that problem anymore. i know cause i did the same shit with hands.
>>2751137
Not that anon.
But I am also having trouble with hands and feet. The quantity part I understand fully, so I'm not looking for a shortcut. However, I don't want to be drawing 1000 hands doing it incorrectly the whole time.
Where I should start studying hand/foot construction?
Is this any good for a start? Should I continue?
>>2751151
dicksout/5
>>2751151
That's a good skill level to start learning the basics and their application. Read the thread op sticky pastebin and keep practising!
>read scott robertson for a week
>watch proko's head video again
>actually understand what he's saying
a-am I learning, guys? is this what it feels like to get good?
>>2751224
Addictive once it gets going.
My first time trying some construction in 3 point, also trying digital and freehand. Can I get some critique, please?
>>2751169
I read the sticky. I'm just resting from drawing boxes.
>>2751228
I know you can draw that box better.
>>2751250
Maybe you are right, however I don't think it's that bad. A little wobbly, I suppose I have to keep practicing freehand.
Right now I just want to stay away from the 3D grids you can create with Photoshop.
>>2750747
Welp I tried
>>2751261
You really didn't. You didn't even try to structure that portrait.
does this look anything like Barron Trump?? want to nail his face before finished sketching, maybe make the cheeks rosy? idk
>>2751263
I thought when doing drawings of real things you were supposed to draw the lines you see not use construction?
At least that's what I took from keys to drawing.
Anything else you can tell me?
>>2751264
With symbol drawing like that, it could look like anybody.
>>2751261
I definitely find it easier to copy 2d images but even here it was a bit off (the head on the left is taller than it should be and not wide enough).
Any advice on either pic is appreciated.
>>2751263
I would like if you could be more specific.
>>2751283
probably because you're symbol drawing since you can't see the shapes and forms of 3d object unless someone has simplified them for you to understand them.
>>2751264
LOOMIS
>>2751283
Too much symbol drawing. The reason why the left pic looks more 3D is because the artist already has a grasp on how to build figures by combining forms.
>>2751307
You gonna understand what lines are suppose to represent, people are not made from lines so it does not work if you just "draw the lines".
Drawing from real life might help you understand it more.
>>2751307
It's much better to draw real objects and people from observation, not drawings that have been stylized like those characters.
Help plz
rate my mugs
>>2751340
They wouldn't read the sticky anyway, people like these just post without reading anything.
so to summarise:
circles on squares in perspective
tall cylinders in perspective
filling in of arbitrary outlines with rings
applying upturned pins to drawn shapes
drawing rings through donut shapes
line practise
shapes on shapes
anything im missing?
>>2751342
I did read the sticky though, I am reading the books, but this is a beginner thread which I assumed was specifically for these sorts of questions.
>>2751342
we need a /fit/ style banner in bold and red saying "STOP, READ THE STICKY BEFORE POSTING FOR THE FIRST TIME" or similar. also the sticky needs to be a tad more concise so new visitors get the information they need quickly.
maybe its done in the image we have if not in text.

>>2751330
You're symbol drawing.
Stop it.
>>2751333
Are those the peanuts?
thoughts on facial anatomy/lighting? are the colours too much?
Doing the excercises on Perspective Made Easy and using a book as reference for drawing boxes, I've got a few questions.
Whenever I try to draw the book or whatever real life box the proportions are always slightly off, or it will always be slightly rotated differently. How do I fix this? Or is this something more like keep grinding until you eventually learn how to always get it right kind of thing?
How do you deal with vanishing points that are outside the paper? Most of the time the vanishing points aren't there in the paper for me to just ghost a line from them to the object and it will likely fuck my shit up.
Basically, my question is. Should I be studying from another source to learn how to deal with this stuff or just keep grinding away til I get it?
>>2751458
The eye on the right is kinda buggy, I don't think that's how it works. the curly bit on the side of the top lip isn't quite right. The colours and lighting are pretty good. You capture well the tired eyes of a sex addict.
How do i turn a mindless study into an actual study?
How do i learn from studying photographs or other artwork by copying the image with simple shapes?

No. He wants to have more confidence in his lines, you're suggesting a medium which tends to create compulsing Ctrl+Z fags, which derives in carelesnes. In any case what the anon should try is ink, you fuck up then sorry, scratch that shitty drawing and move on to the next, but this time be a man and don't screw up your lines.
My advice is do gestures, 1'30" and 1 min ones. Watch how other artist do their gestures, imitate them, then slowly find your own way. Draw lightly, learn to accentuate only the parts that need to be. FUCKING PRACTICE

Also the quality of the picture is bad.

>>2751582

>>2751151
I think that comp is too complicated for a beginner. Just do the gorilla. Forget the background or just do the background. Don't try to do all of it or you'll get FUCKED.
>>2751261
Don't draw on notebook paper. Ever. Just get a proper white sheet of paper and work on that mm-kay.
>>2751383
Study actual heads. Get away from which ever cartoony style that you're probably copying. Do that shit first and when you feel comfortable enough with real shit you do that cartoony shit. All of those amazing stylized artists that you admire probably have the ability to draw real shit so you should too. Doing cartoony shit after that is gonna be much easier.
>>2751268
Artists train themselves to view surroundings and subjects in simple shapes - When doing studies, try to think of the underlying structure and form. Otherwise, you're just drawing contour lines and not learning anything.
People who only ever copy photos turn into photocopy machines, try asking them to draw from imagination and there's a huge difference in drawing ability.
>>2750747

he does not teach you how to draw people. he will tell you how to make drawing people and anything else much easier to learn. you will know how to draw at various angles and distances and where to place people in environments. you just won't learn any anatomy.

Not raster, no digital painting involved. I don't know if Clip does vector.

How could I go into making this "feel" more like a 3D shape?
I know blending and coloring it would be a thing, but saying we were only using lines, how could go about it, it looks really bland and the sketch of it looks way more like a real shape.
>>2751687
draw it using construction lines. horizon, vanishing points, squares around the wheels etc.
>>2751696
Like this? The book I'm reading did say that keeping some of the sketch lines could help but I feel like my sketching phase is too messy.
>>2751699
you did plot the horizon and vanishing points right?
>>2751702
after practicing many cubes you kinda get good at it.
Also Erik Olson is an amazing teacher, he has a couple of videos where he explains diminishing guides, a little hard to wrap your head around but after a couple of weeks of practice they start to become a little more normal, pic related.
>>2751708
>diminishing guides
What?
>>2751699
ok so a few things. do the full construction, it will help i think.
look at the tires, most long vehicles have more than 2 pairs. if it takes an abrupt stop it will tip forward since they are too close to the centre. also you didnt use the technique to plot them equally, the back one is too close to the center. also the actual wheels arent in line properly because you didnt plot their square to the vanishing point. stuff like that. just focus.
>>2751709
Basically when the VPs are too far away from the picture planes you make guides to help you see where to make lines. It's hard to get but it works, if you double in half the picture plane and whatever you want to draw, you've got yourself a guide, then you double that and so on.
At first they are really confusing but after a while you kinda just see them without drawing them, that's how you get good at estimating when going to the VPs.
Do yourself a favor and go watch Olson's stuff.
>>2751712
Yeah I'll admit that I just guessed where the tires would be, I'm a little tired. I should probably start using real life references for things like tires too, I completively forgot that busses have 4 or 6 pairs of wheels. Thanks for the feedback.
>>2751718
i would actually encourage you to not use a reference in an instance like this. just focus more and train your mind to see realism and viability from imagination.
Something is seriously wrong with the leg but I don't know how to fix them

>>2752163
Look at attached pic. You can see that when you (the bottom point) look at the square from the side, the widest point of circle from your view is not at the center of the square. In reality it is, but you're not drawing an absolute representation of reality, you're drawing a skewed representation of it.

Flu sucks. Take a panadol, if your throat is sore mix lemon and honey with hot water and drink that, drink lots of water in general, and take a hot shower. Yeah, I think I'll do that. I am shivering and the lines are getting more jaggy than usual..Thanks Anon, good night /ic/.
I started this year, any comment, what should i improve
>>2752615
i'd just quit homie, you don't have the spark at all.
>>2752615

I'd suggest practicing drawing more one subject pictures of men, women and children
That treeman is dope

i wanna draw but i'm consumed by reading about drawing
someone call me a faggot and tell me to just put the pen to the paper and draw from the shoulder or some shit
am i polishing turd? i'm newfag at photoshop painting looks ugly
>>2752681
You're polishing an image you haven't even blocked in yet.
>>2752681
>those jowls
Why is digital painting so exhausting? I can game for 8 hours straight thinking of clever ways to make shit work in factorio but painting slays me after 30 minutes.
Tried to do some kr0npr1nce style loli shit. Turned out ok. My colors are less awful than they used to be but I always go too light. The thing that sucks is that once everything's too light, I'm afraid to go too dark cause the good darks now look way darker comapred to the current colors.
>>2752690
>I can game for 8 hours straight thinking of clever ways to make shit work in factorio
Gaming is one of the least mentally demanding things you can do, it's up there with watching tv. I don't know why you would even mention that.

>He's never stayed up for three days straight fueled by nothing but bitter hatred while losing hundreds of MMR
Never gonna make it.
Some shitty ass legs
>>2752691
This isn't actually true at all. Gaming is one of the more mentally demanding things you can do in your spare time. The reason time flies so fast is because it floods you with adrenaline. It is far more mentally demanding than drawing, due to a much higher level of decisions per minute.
In other news, kill yourself :)
Started digital drawing, since I've had this small intuos for a while. The disconnect of having the drawing be done on one area and appearing on another is confusing me and discouraging me. Any tips?
>>2752725
You could stand to vary your lineweight just a bit. Maybe try a sketch with size by pressure turned on.
How many actually draw here? I feel like these threads are filled with depressed and angry robots who have never even touched a pen.
sketchy stuff with new tablet
>>2752821
there are people on /fit/ who dont lift but i dont think there are people on here who dont practice drawing.
>>2752852
Nice. Puch them.
>>2752854
I hope that's the case.
2752821
Not a lot if non-practioners, because the second you state something it's pyw time, if you fail to deliver (or cop out and meme it) then you're a fucking liar and everything you said doesn't matter.
It strikes a nice balance between anonymity and weeding out bullshit.

I just started keys to drawing, but I want to solely start learning via a digital medium as I never intend to draw on paper. They expect me to use shading, and I'm somewhat lost because there's so many options on how to go about this with sai and clip art studio. Obviously the correct answer is to use paper and pencil, but should I mess around with the applications to find what I like to get the job done, or look up a guide for simple digital shading?
moar
>>2752883
I know where you're coming from. You think you're gonna get ahead of the curve by not doing traditional at all. The truth of the matter that I and a lot of other people in this thread have learned is that traditional (even for a couple months since you seem stubborn) gives you the coordination and dexterity that will make learning the fundamentals so much more easier than doing it digital, as well as having an easier transition into using a tablet.
But be my guest and keep using your tablet. When the going gets tough, hopefully you'll put the pieces together.
By the way, KTD is meant to be done with a pencil and paper.
>>2752887
A lot of your faces are moonfaced, as in round towards the front as it goes into the chin/jaw. Not sure if that's a muh style thing or?
>>2752887
bigger eyes, smaller nose, eyes lower down, fuller tits, less mouth, thinner eyebrows, more cute. desu it looks fucking gross
as for technical stuff, show construction, stop chicken scratching, add detail.
>>2752890
A graphics tablet should be about the same for coordination right? I got it for free basically, and it gave me the push to learn, as I've always been interested in art, but have just grown somewhat older and gave up on it in the past. A beginner with a cintiq sounds retarded, but it's my situation. I probably have "oh I got this shiny thing I have to use it" syndrome honestly. If you think even then pencil and paper is a better starting point I'll go ahead and do it.
better or nah.
>>2752890
could you redline the moon face thing i'm doing?
>>2752906
better
the boobs are slightly wrong though
neck looks strange? too big? too far forward?
the outline near the hip should be adjusted to show the abdominal muscles in the area
the hair sits strange but that might be style
hamstring adjust maybe?
im struggling to find things, looks pretty good.

I'm going to my local convention and KRENZ is going there. I really want to give him something but what should I give to artists in general? I'm still learning so my art is nothing compared to his.
>>2752908
alright cheers, you've given me some direction to go in. off to draw some heads
How do I apply all this stuff I've learned about perspective into drawings? I understand the eye-level horizon line, I understand how boxes look up/down the horizon line and rotated around, I understand that parallel lines converge at vanishing points, but how will this help in an actual drawing? Like in figure drawing. I don't know how I'd apply my knowledge of how boxes work to people; people aren't made up of boxes.
>>2752917
you use perspective to line up forms, like nipples, angle of head vs ribcage, helping to imagine how a form turns though space, there's 100 subtle ways it will help you. Draw 10 cars and error check as you go with perspective and you will get it.
>>2752911

>>2751095
Looking at this stuff, I think the problem you find with the soles is actually your toes. The alignment of them is a wee bit too horizontal when looking at the feet drawn from directly beneath. Angle from the big toe down a little bit more. That being said, the toe length is a little long and the width is a little thin. Altogether these tiny details make the foot look somewhat flatter and fat-ish. Otherwise, you're awesome at this stuff.
Is it worth subbing to newmastersacademy as a beginner?
>>2752824
No, i meant you could do better in terms of a better girl
>>2752960
Sure, but you can get all the info and resources you need for free. Unless you want access to their model references* or think their lessons will teach you more than the books you can get in the artbook thread for free, go ahead.
*But they also have timed figure drawing videos on YT for free and there are so many other photo reference websites that are also for free. I don't see the point in paying for it, unless you want pictures of a specific model.
>>2751458
That's one spicy joji! Only thing i suggest is lighting on the neck and you connected the neck muscles wrong I believe. Otherwise very very very good!
>>2751753
I'm lookin' at the back legs, and they seem like they're angled too far back. My suggestion is, well, if you look at a bull's hind legs you'll see they have a joint similar to a reverse knee? I don't know what it's called, but the design for this badass shit right here looks like it would benefit greatly from something like that.
should I give up?
>>2752994

This is a nice shrimp with Joost Swarte head
I did this manipulation of facial features in MSPaint to try and find something more natural; Edit 4 being the most recent: I felt that the jaw was too high in many of them, and so lowered it slightly
Yet it struck me that, perhaps, that wasn't the detail that gave the most deterioration of my normal conception of a human. It was probably the nose, but because I moved the nose down I also had to move the mouth, because there is a certain distance before the teeth where there isn't nostrils. The problem is: if I were to maintain this rule, I would have to either compress the whole face into smaller distances between each key feature, understood in thirds, or make an anatomically indecent image
I still don't think the attachment of the chin isn't a bit wonky; is there anyone who would be able to point of flaws in the shape of the chin? I hate chins
>>2753099
By the way: I'm trying to make it look as realistic as possible, so please point out if I'm stealing from any stylized design-philosophies
Or not or not or not; I'm - I can appreciate that some people want to get payed for writing critiques, but I could really do with a free, brutal critique now

How the fuck do I avoid the brush stroke overlapping in Photoshop CS6? I've already tried with 100% opacity and flow and have been going through the brush preset options trying to find the issue but nothing seems to work.
