Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

It's so easy to fore-shorten such a thing.

Beginners shouldn't be concerning themselves with drawing the human body.

They're better off studying from life than worrying about a drawing such as this.

>>2748496
not really since my last update. besides 'study more' no i didnt because im busy but i did watch some proko vids and applied that to this one (for example the sides of the mouth and lip construction is improved on this) and the philtrum is drawn a bit better. its hard to tell cause the file size but theres more detail in the eyes than before. i think its an improvement from this one
>>

I can understand being busy and shit, but I honestly think you should do keys to drawing before you do anything else. It's sure to improve your stuff a lot if you actually do it. You are missing fundamentals that it can teach you.

>>
>>2748661
On short term you should push your values and mind the form more. I see you used wrapping lines that indicate form on some areas and it works decently, while you ignored it on others (or where uncertain about the underlying masses). Also mind line economy - areas closer to the light source should have thinner or even hinted lines, while areas away from the light source have thicker lines. You also only have smooth value changes - have harder edges on abrupt plane changes and mind the core shadows.

On long term I would recommend studying figure, starting with gesture. The creature is unbalanced and stiff. Hampton would be a good source. Once you understand gesture and basic forms, you can move on to anatomy.

Concept wise your "baron of hell" is a bit cliché. Try to work more with references and thumbnail designs until you find something interesting. Try to work with basic shapes and a readable silhouette.

To say something positive about your art. Your lines seem confident for most part and you seem to had fun with this drawing. Keep it up!
>>
>>2748664
Keys to drawing. More values. Drawabox.
>>
>>2748669
>more values
He works in black and white, there are only 2 values, dumbass. Stick your memes up your ass, faggot.

>drawabox
Shitty advice. I'd recommend watching Peter Han's videos and reading into his Dynamic Bible or looking into Robertson's How to Draw. Drawabox is just a watered down version of those exercises and the creator sadly lacks a lot of skill, especially in the later lessons.
Drawabox is okay for having an additional source in case you have troubles understanding Han, but shouldn't be taken for itself. Also don't fall into the trap of only doing drawabox exercises for studying or thinking you will be good after doing the minimal amount of suggested practice. Think of it more as warmup exercises.

>Keys to drawing.
Valid suggestion considering anon's current skill level.

>>2748664
Your biggest concern right now should be your milage when it comes to the technical aspect of drawing. If I where you I would step back a little and do line exercises traditionally. Remember to draw from your shoulder, not your wrist. Keep practicing forms like you do right now.

I would recommend starting with a field of drawing that interests you. Is there anything you particularily like to learn or have interest in?
I could name you a bunch of books like the other anon, but I believe practicing art is very personal and shouldn't be treated as grinding the fundamentals. You can attain your fundies while having fun.

hi /beg/

long time lurker to /ic/ first time poster

I am trying to pick up where I left art like... 10 years ago as it's my only talent I realized I have ever had and being a 25yo NEET means I might as well do something.

I bought a tablet a few months ago but haven't really touched it til this week. I torrented photoshop cc 2015 and have just been fucking around with it thus far, trying to figure out what the fuck to do with a tablet and how the fuck PS works. I am obviously garbage but I'm sick of scribbling shit just testing out the brushes & pens and am looking for brush that I can start beginning immediately for line work so I can start actually drawing.
I genuinely don't understand why some brushes have the tip degrade. I don't understand the fucking maple leaf brush. Do I need to download some brushes, possibly?

Are there any good starting points for using a tablet/this program? It's really a lot to take in, especially considering I still need to work on hand to eye, fundamentals, etc etc.

Thank you for reading and suggesting. I hope I'll be able to actually start posting my progress soon. Pic is what I attempted before posting this.

>>

yes, a common error is to leave too much of the white of the paper, wich makes all the values seem wrong in comparison. Look at your reference and search for the lightest part, that's gonna be your "white", all the rest is pretty much grey and darker.

Also, try not to scratch too much, rendering takes time, building tone its a slow process

From someone in similar place, I recomend to start in paper, once you've got perspective down, maybe some basic figure I would recomend moving to digital.

Otherwise learning how to use software and struggling to use it will take more time of your time than drawing, once you have some idea of how to draw move to Sai and learn photoshop in your free time.

Her right shoulder looks like it's bent too far back for the angle she's at. It should be almost fully in view. Her left arm also looks a bit too short, especially the upper arm.

Perspective seems a bit off and the horizon looks too high.

Composition-wise, you might also want to make the sword point towards the vanishing point. You might also want the deer to be directly over the vanishing point to draw the eye. Those are just suggestions though.

is the Peter Han's vidoe the one where he tells us to draw over lines and ellipses to build our arm muscle? if so I have been doing that for a while.
and is the "keys to drawing" book written by Dobson?

I try to do my line practice every day it takes me about 40 min to do one set (line, curves, waves and ellipses) how long should I practice for? and by form you mean cubes and 3d shapes?

I started to draw because I wanted to draw cute anime girls but now I just want to get good at drawing.
I've also been doing the exercises on cntrl+paint for a while.

thanks

No.
I know a professionally diagnosed autistic dude that is better at conveying emotion than I'll ever be. Everything he does is very clear and concise. There's no middle ground where I'm not really sure what he's trying to express. His art is terrible, but his emotions are probably the best thing about it. That's where he really has to think about what he wants.

Personally, I've been diagnosed with Aspergers, and I have a hard time visualizing emotions, but even I have work arounds to get what I want (pretend i'm in the picture and capture the pressure in my face, etc).

You're simply excusing yourself. It's not a face; it's a machine.

Does anyone know what would be the best way to aproach this book?

I already understand basic perspective and form drawing but I feel this book is unclear about how should I practice the concepts in it.

Should I draw after every chapter? or should I read it all and then draw? If anyone has read it I would appreciate some guidence on how to practice for it.

Question:
How would one go by on making something with this style?

If you could mention the steps, program used and also each tool(brush tool, pen tool) that would be great.
>>
>>2749463
An understanding of fundamentals and how to manipulate them in such a way that is appealing yet still doesn't necessarily break the underlying rules of anatomy, lighting, form, and perspective.

As per tools, it looks like Photoshop.

>>
>>2749465
Thanks, but I was more curious on the technicals like how to achieve clean yet varied lines

Was this all done with the brush tool?
How would you have done it to get this style?
>>
>>2749470
A hard round brush could make it with pressure variation.
On the other hand, you could also do it in Illustrator, since the you can vary the line weight manually.
>>
>>2749472
oh, alright I see. so it's the pen pressure that makes it
What's a good way to learn line weight?
>>
>>2749381
Yeah, it's for a friend
>>
>>2749475
Line weight can be achieved when you have good control over your lines, either digitally or traditionally.
I mean, in the end it's all about how well you can control the pressure you're exerting on your pen fast enough to not get squiggly lines, but not too fast to make inaccurate lines.
The drawabox exercises help with that.

>>2749480

>>
>>2749543
oh Christ the resolution fucked up my b
>>
>>2749543
Well your proportions are not good, so I would suggest working on that first.

Basically, learn how to draw from scratch. Look up anatomy guides and facial anatomy guides, then practice lots, then post something worth critiquing.
>>
>>2749543
Aside from what >>2749548 said on the basic stuff, I recommend you to lay in all the basic stuff before commiting to details as you did in your pic.
>>
>>2749532
I think the one before looks a bit better.
Why I think that is because your shading is coming of as heavy and rough, for the type of drawings you're doing.
I'd recommend you to drop the values a bit.
Use lighter grays.
If you're using india ink wash, put more water on it. I usually fill 75% of a brush pen cartridge with water and drop only a few drops of ink. It may get too light, but you can control it with layers of strokes.
>>
>>2749557
Thanks for that. My problem with the earlier one is that the shading seems at odds with the linework, makes it look flat and boring. When the values go darker, I think there's a lot more depth. I do think the face should have much softer shading though. Maybe I'll give up on linework and just focus on values from now.

>>2749557
Also, about the diluting the ink, I do that. But I guess it's hard to tell when to stop applying more layers.

While we're at it, does this suffer the same problem? I've posted it before but never got any feedback. The reason I took my values darker in the first place was in response to a critique on an earlier version.

It's messy, it's very visibly lopsided, but it's also oddly endearing, in a way. Colours are nice, shading is okay, bit inaccurate. I love watercolours tho.

>>
>>2749902
If that's your style then go for it. If people want a perfect line drawing then they can take a photograph and put a photoshop filter on it, or make it in google sketchup or some shit. The way you choose to draw something adds character to it; you can draw pristine new buildings with clean, perfect lines, and draw rundown buildings with rough lines, to invoke connotations to the scene you're creating.

I like Ed, Edd and Eddy backgrounds because they kind of feel like a cheap set with shitty lighting. That image looks like it has a single light source coming from off-screen, for example.

Read stock and don't do anime until you have the fundamentals down. Anime drawing keeps you locked in really bad habits and ultimately hinders your ability to draw. I'm >implying
That your new, but in case you are: don't fall for the Loomis right away meme, do it after you've got perspective and lines. Drawing for fun is whatever. Fundamentals is challenging myself because it's doing something that I haven't done before. It's usually not easy nor fun, but you learn something from it. Although the time in and value taken out seems small, it's better to think of it in the long run.

First post here. I haven't drawn since I was like 10, but I want to learn. Picked up Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and just finished the first "real" drawing of the book. I know it's shit, but god damn it's the first thing I've ever drawn that I'm actually pretty happy about.

Wannabe artist checking in.

Is furshit (clean) OK to post here?
Anywhere for furshit as fast as chan for feedback?

Wanted to post some WIP stuff and ask if I should keep at what I'm doing, or figure it's a waste of time. Trying to do higher quality non-stereotypical furshit. Fur that's actually rendered and not symbolic, anatomy that is actually both hybrid and plausible, anthros that aren't tryhard-vixens nor halfhassed but "average" looking. Etc.

Feel like I'm nearly "there" but also that this is all a deadend, and I should just take up furshit drawing methods instead.
>>
>>2750610
Global rule 3: Furry not allowed outside of /b/, but this is the place that mods don't check. Also you're gonna be shit on for drawing furshit but who cares.

Fuck it, here's an upper forearm. It just happens to have fur.

Trial fur rendering from shoulder to elbow crook. Should have discernible bicep, tricep, etc.

Stereotypical furshit is shaded skin with some symbolic hints of fur thrown on. I'm thinking form should be denoted by directional flow of hair as much as lighting if it's of any length at all.

Is my monitor color calibrated correctly? On my drawing monitor: the background is greyfog tinted green and the fur highlights have a golden hint. Yet on my browser monitor: It's foggy-blue and hit by a magenta light like an 80's movie set downtown. The fuck is going on with my two monitor's color calibration.

Regarding Loomis, would his methods of construction (blook ball, doohinkus skeletons) be considered a form of "symbol drawing"?
I mean technically when you use them you always start drawing the same way (start drawing the head as a ball and work you way down) rather than drawing things as they are, this is probably a stupid observation but isn't that the same as symbol drawing where you draw what you think something should look like rather than what is actually there?
>>
>>2750630
This is why people don't understand artists. They see something and think it's something else. It may look the same on the outside, but in your mind, it has different intentions. Construction is to help guide you. Symbol drawing, forget it. It's something just to scare beginners so that they stop fucking around.
>>
>>2750617
>Is my monitor color calibrated correctly?

Is it a desktop monitor? Is it IPS? Is it Technicolor certified?
If "Yes" to all three, then reset to technicolor factory defaults. If "No", then buy a fucking IPS and get with the times.

Is it a laptop screen?
You're fucked. I've never gotten one properly calibrated. You'd need this special handheld tool that sees and reports color, they're not cheap. Online calibration aides don't really work.
>>
>>2750637
>Is it a laptop screen?
Wait, even on macs?
>>
>>2750630
>Is construction actually symbol drawing?
Yes, but it's not the final product.

Volume, you need to understand volume. Try speed-sketching still life around the house or even people without defining the outlines. Loosely scribble to fill in volumes, orient/style the scribbles to describe the volume.

Brains find edges of objects to be very important, but they aren't stored perfectly in your mind. You need a "feel" of the space the mass actually occupies, not just the characteristics of it's outline, if you want to stop symbol drawing.

Construction is just when you've got no direct reference, but to fully utilize it you need to fundamentally understand the volume of what you're putting on the construction. Otherwise you'll just end up drawing a higher detail symbol over your construction framework.
>>
>>2750600
Do you do all of your drawing in a car/at work/etc. ???
>>
>>2750638
>Wait, even on macs?

1) If it's not an IPS panel, it's already fucked. Just having the lid at the wrong angle will throw everything off. LCD screens have always had shit viewing angles until IPS.

2) If it's a laptop, the brightness will manually or even dynamically adjust. This will throw off any manual calibration you've done, it's only is accurate to the backlight setting you calibrated it at. Even still, manual calibration isn't very accurate.

3) You need either:
Factory-certified to an international standard default settings you can reset to.
Or: Handheld color-reading gizmo which isn't cheap.

Until somewhat recently, you either had to seriously research your LCD monitor before buying and generally had to go high end, or just buy a CRT which had superior image for nearly a decade after they were phased out.

nah, i try to avoid drawing in here because its literally hard to draw (small penand touch literally in the seat next to my leg). so i just paint here, hence the finished symbol portraits. im just plowing through keys right now cause you guys say to and i happen to be at work
>>
>>2750650
Now, I have no idea what your work is, and I kinda don't wanna judge, but, shouldn't you be, you know, working?
>>
>>2750646
Drew from a reference? Just overlay and see how accurate the anatomy was.

Your pencil shading is pretty rough. Try charcoals, or smudging.

Overall: Highschool art.

Contrast is something you need to conquer. Eg, consider the white band of reflected light on the hair.
1) Is the light reflection band through the hair really that white compared to..... it's immediate surroundings? Like the much darker hair?
2) Is the light reflection band through the hair really that white compared to..... something somewhere else like the well lit area of the chest? Or maybe the highlights on the knee?

Beginner shading tends to have problems with contrast both in local areas and across the whole piece.
Amateur shading tends to have contrast errors in the shading between distant regions since the artist's perception shifts going across a piece.
Skilled artists will still have trouble but develop a feel for it.

If people got paid overtime when there was nothing for them to be doing at work at a particular moment, we would have the ~20 hour workweeks the 21st century was supposed to.

~30% of the time I'm waiting on other people or things, or done with everything which can be done in that day, or done with everything which needs to be done in any one day. Then I'm just looking busy or intentionally stretching work out to fill time.
Most people are paid to fill a seat more often than not.
Technology has significantly shortened the actual hours most jobs require compared to when the "40 hour full time" standard was implemented.

Not him. Different anon here.

>btw just had B6 in that moment xd
I have no idea what you just said.

Anyway, the brightest area of what you're trying to draw should be the only pure-white thing. The darkest area should be the only pure-black thing. Both of these will actually be pretty small areas or not much for most stuff, naked people included. Utilize the full range of contrast.

Try using a greyscale swatch gradient on hand or on your drawing to compare stuff.

Otherwise, it wasn't bad excepting the actual figuredrawing.

So you're saying that when using construction I should draw the features that are on the subject before I draw the outlines or am I misreading your post?

How do I apply all this stuff I've learned about perspective into drawings? I understand the eye-level horizon line, I understand how boxes look up/down the horizon line and rotated around, I understand that parallel lines converge at vanishing points, but how will this help in an actual drawing? Like in figure drawing. I don't know how I'd apply my knowledge of how boxes work to people; people aren't made up of boxes.
