decided to move on from drawing female figures since i've come to the conclusion that i am getting nowhere. want some advice here so i have something to think about while im doing other things.

what am i doing wrong here?
>>
>>2745149
try gestures then fill in the gestures with a construction. remember the gesture isn't the contours
>>
>>2745149
well... think. what does appear to be the officer problem? If something doesn't feel right, then it's probably not. Try to pinpoint why it feels weird and correct those areas. However I think, in your case, either make the top of the figure bigger or the bottom smaller. Make it more of a hourglass figure, or a cylinder- like, but not conical.

>>
>>2745161
never really understood gestures desu, whenever people try and explain it they use meaningless words like "flow" and "feel". idk what they actually consist of.

>>2745176
i once read that the hip is wider than the shoulders so i tried to emphasise it. i get what you mean though, its too much.

anything else you can tell me?
>>
>>2745197
It's a fairly abstract concept. What you want to do is capture the energy in whatever you're depicting.

Put simply, you're trying to draw not the body, but the way the body is being effected by gravity and motion. You're not drawing a static piece, but rather the action that is happening.
>>
>>2745197
yeah one more thing. Don't listen to me, I don't know ANYTHING about form or proportion, hell i barely even draw. your sketches honestly look better than my full pieces.
>>
>>2745197
About gestures. What you probably want to do is make it look natural, the way the body would actually behave. You have to think and imagine in your head, if a part of the body is in that position, what would it actually look like.
>>
>>2745197
>anything else you can tell me?

Do 1 Figure on large paper and measure proportions. Take like 2 h or so without shading just to get proportions correct and learn to measure. Start with marking where which landmark is supposed to be and after that draw the figure.

Gesture to me is the form of the body, that creates the overall shape. I found that this can be created by shadows, occasionally seeing people not drawing all the limbs and shading them in to show the gesture.

Also You might want to do it using thumbnails so you get less focused on the details.

As I see it, my biggest problems are lineart and rendering.

I want to focus on fixing my lineart first - any tips how to do that?

Should I keep trying with brush tool, or learn about pen tool?
Any book recommendations? (the ones that I found focused on using traditional tools; I want to do it digitally)
Am I overthinking it? Should I just draw more and it will "click" for me?
>>
>>2745241

Lineart is mainly increased traditionally, because when you do something in ink you can't undo that shit. So you concentrate more on doing it clean the first time. Digitally the undo button hurts in getting clean lineart.
>>
>>2745241
Completely forget lineart, its totally unnecessary unless you are doing black and white. Just actually paint in your edges, that always looks way better then a solid black edge no matter how good the lineart is.
>>
>>2745241
the tools are fine. Your linework looks confused, like you don't really know where to put it.

You use lines on the general outline of the figure as well as wherever the form turns and when the forms overlap and lastly wherever there is occlusion(4 things). For example if you stretch out your leg you can see your knees overlap/taper over your lower leg and your outer ankle overlaps a small part of your foot. If you're fat you can hunch over and look at how your belly fat presses together and creates occlusion. You could use carefully placed lines to define that in a drawing.

When you're rendering you want to keep in mind what type of lightsource you are using. Is it hard or soft? is it warm our cool? The shadows will follow accordingly.

It looks like you are using a hard light on the face because the nose is casting a pretty solid shadow onto the cheek but on the body it's soft light because none of the shadows are clearly defines. You're gonna want to pick one of the two and redo it.
>>
>>2745249
I also think he is confusing construction with contours. Construction lines are what you use to build and define the form in 3d for your benefit and aren't supposed to show up in the final product. Contours have no purpose but to show the edges of he forms.
>>
>>2745247

>Just actually paint in your edges, that always looks way better then a solid black edge no matter how good the lineart is.

I prefer a painterly approach as well but that's still wrong. There's plenty of phenomenal lineart out there that benefits by virtue of having good lineart.
>>
>>2745243
Thanks!
I guess I discarded traditional art too quickly; I'll go back to my sketchbooks for a while.

>>2745247
Sounds cool; I'll definitely experiment with this approach. Thank you.

>>2745249
>>2745254
Oh, I see! So, for example, the vertical line that crosses the navel was unnecessary, because none of those 4 things occur, right?
I guess I really was mistaking construction lines with lineart.

And thanks for rendering tips - I'll keep them in mind for later.

I could've made the image colorless but I'm trying to train myself to guess values from color

I've read both Gurney books & Hornungs, am I ready enough start using color?
>>
>>2745306
Well you've got some drawing errors in it like the size of the features, the size of the shoulder, the structure of some things especially around the eyes, the neck is too wide etc. You also are not going dark enough so it's really washed out looking.

That said, just start using colour as well. I think your value sense will improve when you think in colour rather than trying to translate colour to value.

Your pelvis "bucket" shape seems to be placed arbitrarily, and coincidentally always faces the same direction as the ribcage.

Find challenging poses and focus on the placement of the ribcage & pelvis, and their relationship. Use boney references and pay attention to the landmarks (iliac crest, pubis, sternum).

Proko's "robo-bean" lesson covers this in more detail

They're all fine starting points
DotRSofB is mainly for observation. If you can recreate what you're looking at (and other people agree), then you can move on. If you post some studies/still-lifes and ask "am I symbol drawing?" Most of /ic/ will be able to tell.

Between Loomis & PME, just go with what you enjoy more -- you're gonna end up reading both anyway. Personally I prefer PME.

Nude females are probably the easiest ref in the world to find.

In any case, get some books on anatomy and/or figure drawing. Bridgman, Peck, Hampton, Vilppu, all these guys have good books on it.

Well it looks like you don't know what you are doing really. The rib cage is misplaced, the lines aren't showing the anatomy properly, the silhouette is wrong. You need to learn what the pelvis looks like, what the proportions of it compared the ribcage are, how the rectus abdominus and external obliques connect them and attach etc.

For shading, block in the halftones first. The right half of the face is noticeably darker than the left; but this is lost in the drawing, which looks flat as a result. Be clear from the beginning what's in direct light vs what isn't.

For hair, try to simplify into blocks of shape, again with clear light and shadow. Rendering the texture is secondary.

Check the alignment of landmarks against each other. The right side of her head goes past her ear, which is also too low; the right collar lines up with her nose instead of the edge of her mouth etc. Visualise imaginary lines like this.

As a beginner how important are finished portraits?
Usually when I'm trying to draw without grid I get the first few lines down and then when it starts getting more complicated my proportions are all messed up and I lose motivation.
Right now I just draw small things like my hand and those are still shitty, but not as shitty as a full on portrait. I just want to draw pretty girls.

Keep trying with at least one of the face pictures in each thread, you'll get somewhere
>>
>>2745789

In face drawing keeping proportions is crucial, so mark really accurate reference points and lines (both vertical and horizontal) before drawing.

Some examples: Vertical from corner of the mouth to the end of brow, vertical from chin to the bottom of the nose, horizontal distance between the two etc.

your problem is that you are drawing what you imagine a female torso to look like based on cartoons and caricatures rather than how a human body looks.

i can't redline because i'm at work, honestly i would scrap what you have and try to draw from a reference. if you really want that extremely tiny waist, please look at references of women in corsets because that does not exist in nature.

If you're still here, the minor axis of the ellipses should be parallel to the major axis of the torus.
Imagine making a circle using only the minor axis line of a series of ellipses. In that case, the minor axis of each ellipse would follow the circle, and the major axes of all the ellipses would be pointing toward the middle of the circle.
Same applies when you tilt a circle in space (an ellipse).

Basically yes. In this image, the red line represents both the major axis of the torus, as well as the minor axes of the ellipses that make up the torus. When drawing a torus in perspective, the red line would just be an ellipse, and you just have to make sure that the minor axes of the smaller ellipses are parallel to it, which means you have to tilt them.

Wasted? That's shit worth knowing. Gesture especially. It's the backbone of constructed figures. Otherwise you'd have been told you geometrically constructed figures are stiff and lifeless, and that you should study soft forms and gesture construction.

Just start doing geometrics along with perspective. Then you'll also know that stuff and the two will blend together.

head/face is really good. shoulders look like symbols, hip is off, i think the torso/trunk should be bigger qand the limbs smaller (not sure about this though).

if you want her to be cute (loli-esque), draw her thin with a bit of chub around the tummy and thighs, stickthin arms but again with some fat layering the trunk. minimal muscle. bottom heavy (thighs larger than shoulders)

i think you shouldnt listen to me too much. i think you are drawing something different to what i know about.

when a hip is seen at an angle. the widest point stops being the edge of the bone and starts being the flesh of the ass. so the widest point is higher on the side where you can see the glutes more. you have the widest point of the hip being at the same level on both sides which i think is wrong.

- You should consider doing studies of the eye and brow area. There are a lot of fat pockets and little muscles that bring a drawing to life and I don't see any attempt at drawing them in your picture.
- The 3/4ness of the portrait looks okay, but I can't tell from one drawing if you have just memorized a symbol for 3/4 lips, 3/4 nose, etc like a lot of beginners do.
- I know it is WIP, but your shading does nothing to communicate that this object exists in 3d space. I think you should take the time to learn about occlusions shadows, core shadows, how light reflects off surfaces etc.
- I think you should work in grey scale before moving onto colours. colours add an extra layer of complexity that may not be helpful for learners

Overall it is very flat. I don't think you would be able to draw this character's head from multiple angles. You should do still life studies to get your mind thinking and 3d, then work on individual studies of each feature of the face (eye, nose, mouth etc), then finally move on to full portraits from imagination.

Anyone else digital drawing?
I never had an artist side but I thought to try my hand at a new hobby, something that can be shown to people, that I can see progress. Anyway I can;t seem to get out of this "style" of mine. Pic related.

The lines always look the same no mater how thin I draw them, coloring is just SHIT, which I think is the main reason for the poor quality of what I draw, there's basically no shadowing.

I don't know what else to do, how to improve. Do I absolutely need a 4k tablet to ever do something worthwhile? How do I actually improve?
I mainly need to know more about shading and colouring because I feel my stuff could get a lot better if I knew even the basics.

First learn to draw the cube, practice free hand straight lines and curves, circles and triangles.

Some books that you can read that may help you.

- Scott Robinson how to draw and how to render.
- Villpu drawing manual
- Michael Hampton- Figure Drawing - Design and Invention
- Some proko on youtube for anatomy
- Anatomy for sculptors.

If you don't mind pirating try cgpeers, go do some research on gumroad, patreon tutorials the likes and what you like download them and practice them and take it slow no need to rush. You can try some of the challenges on draw a box as well some of them are pretty fun to do.

Your construction and measurement is off, if not there at all. You see the ref and subconsciously think "huge tits, long neck, long legs" and symbol drawing comes into place.

The saying comes from carpentry or whatever where if you cut off too much of something since you measured wrong, you're fucked and have to buy another piece. If the foundation of whatever you're doing is not right (gesture, proportion, w/e) you'll be polishing a turd.

Brown people beard and nose.
>>
>>2747810
Yeah that's true. The beard looks like that cause I haven't gone into detail but I just can't seem to nail the nose or his facial expression.

Half paintover for you.
Make more plans and keep it simple until shapes are all correct.
>>
>>2747851
Thanks. The nose is great. That expression tho is really elusive. But yeah thanks for the tip. Do you think I should start out with colors or gray-scale like this. Does it even matter?
>>
>>2747863
Up to you. Grayscale is a good option. It's easier to build plans, mass. You will also have a better understanding of textures. Since the light in this picture is not really strong it will force you to be subtle.
Concerning the expression it's all about detail around the eyes and i think you must show the corner of the lips.

Can I have some input on figure studies I did? Gestures and longer studies.
>>
>>2747882
why are you even here
>>
I'm just wondering if anybody else had this feeling when you start linking lines of your sketch and it just looks wrong somehow and it feel like the sketch looks better.

I always trash multiple line layer wasting hours because of this.
>>
>>2747882
Only problem I'm seeing in your studies is that the head size seems a bit inconsistent.

I'm sorry anons, I'm not really confident in what I do. In my defense, there was a lot of good studies in a previous thread, so I assumed I would fit there.

should i put more time into making more accurate drawings when doing value studies?

basically quantity or quality?
>>
could I have some feedback on >>2746109 please?
>>
>>2747973
Do both. Do the occasional long slow accurate study, but also do quicker ones for mileage.

Also I would work on your edges right now you made everything too blurry.
>>
>>2747977
okay, thanks
>>
>>2747976
Looks like you're drawing cymbals. Check the sticky.
>>
>>2747973
>basically quantity or quality?

Quantity will improve your intuition, while quality will improve your execution. You need a bit of both.

Quality might also improve your edgework a little, which is important when it comes to values. Part of the problem is probably your choice of brush.
>>
>>2748071
thanks. what exactly do you think look like symbol drawing?
>>
>>2748102
The main facial features. You think you know how these features look like so you just try to improvise. Try to look really hard at your reference and copy it. Some things are more cymbal than others but everything feels a bit distorted.

Half assed paint attempt.
But it's basically that. People who symbol draw don't exactly understand what makes an eye look like an eye or how a nose looks like a nose, so they do the most basic they can to represent it.
The problem with it, is that you'll be unable to draw stuff in different situations. The eye, for example, wouldn't look like that on a profile view, but symbol drawers still represent them like that.

Hello Rapoza!
>>
Bumplimit reached, time to shitpost!

I have a question. I tried to follow the sticky and draw Picasso's sketch of Igor upside down. I didn't expect much, but it barely looks like what it was supposed to represent.

Should I just practice this drawing EVERY day until I hopefully eventually nails it, or should I draw random objects I frequently interact with and return when I feel confident enough?
>>
>>2748257
The idea of the igor exercise is to train you to draw what you see, not what you think is there. That's why the image is upside down as it's harder to visualise.
Just focus on drawing the lines, their angles and length.
>>
>>2748279
I know, I got that from the sticky, but what I was wondering is if I have to repeat this exercise until my mind snaps and simply gets it? Or is this the point where I should start reading one of those books to cement the idea inside my head.

I may just be barking retarded and making this more advanced and troublesome for myself than it really is, but I feel I'm getting some conflicting informations from the sticky.

Thanks for clarifying the meaning of the exercise by the way.
