Really nice. Are you using much ref on these? My only crit for this one is that the trees seem like the branches are too thick and uniform. It would be nicer I think if you used smaller brushes or tried to get more specific shapes that reflect how it grows.

>>2740396
This is close to being good, but it feels sort of plastic and stiff. If you relaxed his pose a bit, made things feel more natural and unified, fixed the feet which are out of perspective, and then maybe edited the background slightly so the cast shadow and colours are correct, you could have a nice image.

Not that anon, but this interested me and after looking up some images I think the reflection makes sense. I'm not sure why, I guess it depends on the viewing angle and the surface texture of the water, but with a moonlight reflection like this, it seems perfectly possible that there are no visible mountain reflections.

the creamy foam effect works better for snow than it did for your clouds, but still you need to paint something other than white fluffy things... how do you handle greener scenes.

I did a nude figure painting. about an hour and a half of painting. had to pick up the pace at the end of the pose, not used to such short sessions for paintings... i spent a whole 25 minutes on the face then had to rush through the rest, but it's probably better for me in the end if I can paint speedy

shes the same woman from the figure drawings in the last thread
>>
>>2740801
Your chroma is messed up in each section--the face is strong yellow, the torso and arms are a nice skin color, the stomach is ashy grey, the legs are orange. It gives the impression each body part is from a different person and she looks like frankenstein's monster.
>>
>>2740805
>she looks like frankenstein's monster.
a tad dramatic. theres some slight chroma issues I can fix when it dries, but she doesn't look nearly as freakish as you're saying. "frankenstein's monster"? there's some anon that said that about another painting of mine and it was exaggerating then too. i'm guessing you're that anon.
>>
>>2740809
I don't remember saying it before but I may have said it. You often mess up the chroma in different parts.
>>
>>2740810
an hour and a half is just not enough time to get it right on the first pass. i've only got so much focus and it's more important to block it in and add effect/adjust after the fact
>>
>>2740810
how do you feel about the background?
>>
>>2740811
Fair enough. Fix up the colours to unify the figure more when it is dry then, and finish the hands and feet which are missing a lot of information.

>>2740812
It works pretty well actually, and I like it more than your regular backgrounds lately. I think you go just a bit too strong in the bottom right corner, almost like it is a flame down there, and it grabs the eye away from the figure. I also think you can repaint how the background meets the couch in the top left as it is creating that ugly jagged contour.

your value structure is basically nonexistant, your characters blend into the environment in it and the overall composition is bland. You really don't have any edge variation. You have no cast light or general AO on your characters, with no distinguishable light in your environment. Your characters are placed weird, they feel fucking 20' tall, and its usually not a good idea to cut a characters feet off. Also your proportions and and foreshortening are off. I like the colors though.

If you don't mind the input of an art noob, here's my view on it:
I like the overall choice of colors, they work really well together, but I feel like there's too little contrast between the palm tree and the sky (and generally the darker areas). It feels a lot like the top of the palm tree bleeds into the sky.
The sea feels a bit undefined, maybe a few contrasting colors would help here, as well as something happening. (Waves, water structure, anything like that)
I am very confused by the splotches between the sky and the sea, I'm guessing that it's supposed to be a color transition in the sky? Anyways, that part feels a bit like you couldn't decide if you wanted to include fog, clouds or something of the like.
Overall I like this work a lot, and I would love to see where you end up with it.
Not sure if this is at all helpful, since again, I'm really not even close to the level of art on this board and have no training whatsoever when it comes to constructing a picture.

About 30% done... Still figuring out the design of her costume and shit. Just started doing the head dressing thingy. Needs more bling and stuff. Will be adding some complicated engraved stuff to all of her armor etc. Going for that Applibot vibe without all the tits and animu shit. Gonna make her head more scary and stuff. Justin Sweet style or something... C&C/Overpainting encouraged. I've been looking at this shit for way too long now and flipping the canvas isn't helping anymore...

The composition was much better yesterday. Just get rid of the verticality problem on the branch she's standing on. I still like your values but but... Don't lose your confidence because of some shitty comments on /ic/. The pose wasn't terribly bad either. Just loosen up her other arm or something. (Sorry for posting your image from yesterday but take a good look at it. It was never bad. You never should have changed it as much as you did imo, especially the composition!)

I don't want to put my name with these paintovers as they are just something I do on the side for the fun of trying to solve problems and to help people out, not for any recognition. And while a lot of them people find helpful, every now and then I get attacked for them, so don't want my actual name with it. I'm sure I've given out some bad advice by accident at points on these too, since I've done literally hundreds of them. You can see from the filename how high it is, and not all are numbered, and this is just for ones I did on this computer.

>>2741286
This looks really dope. I couldn't help but doodle on top a bit. I think you can focus on getting a clearer value read on the whole thing, and really try to control and understand the light sources and colour temperatures. I think the fires would be a lot warmer and there would be more warm ambient light in the background. Google for images of cities on fire at night and you will see it is actually much more extreme than I even painted over since they tend to kick up a lot of smoke too which then diffuses all that warm light everywhere. I also don't like how you lit the scene with the glow from her hand, maybe either downplay it like I did (instead I used the moonlight more), or maybe you can try to make the colour of it a bit stronger green instead of that pale whitish colour, and you can push how it lights the scene too in a more interesting way. Up to you on how to handle it.

I also think you should spend some time designing whatever she is holding in her other hand. A lot of the composition is focused on that since the shape is against the background, so make it right. I just put in some generic scepter but you can do better.

I know you want to detail this out all blingy, but it's a night time image and in this case I think the mood of the piece in more important, so don't go putting details in areas where they wouldn't really be visible.

Gj, as usual. You do fuckup sometimes, but hey, you provide some much help that one would have to be a massive pozzed faggot to complain to you.
>>
>>2741312

Amazing points and awesome paintover man. Thank you! The structure of warm BG vs cold FG is weird but I see that it works in your paintover so I'll be doing something similar on my piece as well. I actually downplayed the saturation of the background just before I posted it so I'm gonna have to go back and undo some of that.

You're also right about the fact that I should spend more time on the staff on her hand. Leaving it blank for now was intentional since the guys I'm doing this for aren't sure if the thing is necessary for this character but yeah. I really need to bling it up so they'll buy it as I do think that it's necessary for breaking the vertical lines in the piece.

Also don't worry about people attacking you for what ever. Anyone complaining about feedback is a fucking moron and you shouldn't care about them. It's pretty clear that you're out to help me here and I'd have to be a fucking retard to get angry over any of this stuff...

> You do fuckup sometimes, but hey, you provide some much help that one would have to be a massive pozzed faggot to complain to you
Well not every paintover I do is all that great. Maybe one in ten I do I get several people telling me that I ruined the original or that I'm not good enough to be doing paintovers or they just plain insult me. Sometimes I do probably ruin things a bit so I don't mind too much usually. It still seems safest to keep this separate from my name though.

>>2741341
Glad it helps. I don't think the warm bg and cold fg is a problem, it may not be as commonly used as the reverse but in this situation I think it makes the most sense.

>>2741344
I felt the image was a bit busy with those clouds so yeah I think it makes sense to simplify it. It's digital so you can just try things out and see how they look though, so maybe a different approach would work too like having big billowing plumes of smoke rising from the city. You can also keep clouds there and just make sure they are subtle, maybe get some more ref to see what clouds look like at night as it will be different than during the day.

A lot of really early work by pros is like that. It's a sign of potential because even though the technique is bad there is still something to the image.

Amazing job. Love how you have the rough ghost paint streak style. The composition could use some work. It's obvious that the main focal point is the statue and the second is the human but the human seems too distracting and kinda overpowers the statue in terms of attention. Also, a side shot seems too boring, try mixing it up where to see him in a 3/4 view.

Continuing from my initial post.. I got home and I got to do the quick overpainting. I just had to. I love the initial werewolf thing and I think it could become awesome!

I don't think you're educated enough to do the crazy top down perspective on the character so I'd go with something a little more basic. Just use broad strokes. I'd maybe even put some clothes on him to make it appear as if he was actually transformed into a fucking werewolf and that might be interesting but I ain't got time for none of that shit... Hope this helps etc.

I didn't really get it until I read the filename. If you want it walking maybe make some roots at the bases that resemble feet a bit, and you can have one or two of the trunks lifted off the ground as though it is mid-walk.

i think the purple bits need something. and the part purple bit that goes through his hair near the temple looks odd. Looks really 2d, also I would probably just stick them on the visible skin, and not where the hair is? unless that's the look you wanted.

also i think the ear could come forward a little, along with his hairline on the left

Colours seem a bit washed out to me, also if those are cast shadows on the wall behind him from something out of the image you can soften their edges a bit since the penumbra would be stronger.

>holy moly anon, it looks neato. Yours makes it have a mexian/western alien feel to it because of the bar-looking things, which is a pretty cool direction to take. Can you explain a bit more about the penumbra thing and the shadows?
Basically the farther a shadow is cast the softer it gets. Since a light source is not an infinitely small point but rather has dimension, that means there are light waves coming from each part of it, and then when you trace it for the cast shadow there are some areas along the edge that are only hit by some parts of the light source and not the whole thing. As you get farther away this area gets bigger since you're tracing outwards from a small area. Not sure I'm explaining it that well to be honest, but just take note of how the edges of cast shadow looks when things are at different distances. You can test it out yourself by turning on your desk lamp and putting your hand there to cast a shadow on your desk, and depending how close your hand is to the desk the appearance of the shadow should change a fair bit.

nice work firez. Just a quick question you handle rendering very nicely now I see your art making a lot of subtle progress over time that is building up, the hours are paying off eh' buddy. All I was wondering is have you looked into the concept of ambient occlusion, you probably have done but I just thought that maybe if you could strengthen that aspect of your art it would work as a good method to assist you.

AO can be rendered in many different ways but is a good method to introduce linework into your full renders whilst still have it feel very realistic like what you're going for here.

http://artvault.tumblr.com/post/106419321367/alex-negrea-1-rough-line-art-i-usually-do-a

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_GDL9Bp_YZj0/S6mt2HuOLbI/AAAAAAAABXI/CoE65gpceHc/s1600/Grump4.jpg

I cant remember the artist but he paints his figures with AO, hes on artstation I'll have to find him and post back here for you.

Just a thought to look into. as I think the lines on your work really detract from the entire 3 dimensional realism you;re going for in the render process.

Keep it up man love seeing you post!

your noise filter is over powering everything

maybe use a masks ( mask th noise out of the character and leave noise in the background.)

push streak lights coming through tree tops?
>>
>>2741900
Yeah, I feel the noise overpowering the character too.

I'll chuck in some masks and see how we go.

Very nice start! I think you can be a bit more consistent in your lighting--really think about what angle the light is coming from and whether each plane will be hit by the light or not. For example you put her face in darkness but based on the rest of the information of lighting and the way you did her hair in light, her facetoo would have more direct like on it. I think her head is sitting on her body a bit wrong too so I corrected that slightly, and the windows were looking a strange value so I darkened them as though it is nighttime.
>>
>>2742287
good additions. not necessarily because it's more accurate but because it's much easier to read, just compare the two thumbnails. in a scene like this is makes sense to highlight the face like so
>>
>>2742287
Thanks a lot! I think ill keep the pose/angle of the book and maybe darken the blue outside and Ill definetely change the lighting :) This is really useful
>>
>>2742304
Well it reads clearer because the lighting is more consistent.

>>2742307
Glad it helps!
>>
>>2742323
Yeah i used a reference for the lighting actually. I think it may be consistent on the reference enviroment but dont match this one. Also the hair is too lit up, so yeah this one makes a lot more sense :) It may be because im taking my first steps on doing illustrations but creating lighting from imagination seems extremely complicated to me.
>>
>>2742329
For an early attempt at illustration it's really good actually. Lighting can be tricky to handle in a full scene, but just logically work it out and you will be fine. Light follows physics so you can just think through and figure out how things should look. Using reference of course always makes it easier.

AO is something which I try to be aware in mono rendering and even linework, I even remember using something similar for pic related, here is part of its process:

I will try to retake that path and be more organized next time.

Can anyone give some advice please?
I'm beginning to draw digitally after several months drawing on paper. I'm on a mac using firealpaca drawing with a wacom bamboo drawing tablet. I have a few questions and issues though
What are some settings that I need to know about and what should I set them to? (things like brush size, alias or antialias)
How do you make those rough sketches of characters where you draw circles and lines using them as guidelines for the locations of the nose, eyes, mouth etc for weird alien characters with a snout, tube mouth or don't have a circular face?
How do you go about shading? I'm fine with where and how much shading there should be, it's picking the right color, like when I'm trying to pick a color to shade with it looks out of place.

Use antialias unless you want a MS paint kind of look.
Turn correction on (Stabilizes your pen)
Look up books in the book thread. The Loomis books cover how to use guidelines for faces.
Shading can be done using the colorpick sandwich method or whatever they call it.

Firealpaca is a great software, I learned a lot using it. Hope I helped.

idk who you're refering to specifically but i once saw a saching teng tutorial where he said to use noise on every separate layer something from 4-7% and it honestly helped a lot, when you color pick your own drawing you get far richer colors that work within the area you're drawing, then reapply. When you apply it to different layers it doesn't look as uniform as opposed to just doing in it in the final image where it brings nothing.

If you're using it just because of the flashy results it'll probably look like shit, just like any other filter, if you have a good understanding of values/color it's just like any other tool, it can only work in your favor.

pic related is the one he went through in said tutorial

>>
>>2743075
it works in his artwork because the shading/coloring scheme is pretty flat/cell-like
he gives the drawing depth through simplicity
with a fully rendered, somewhat realistic painting the noise filter can actually hurt a lot. in some areas it can work, but most of the time you just lose brushstrokes/texture

and finishing pieces, no matter if they are good or not is the most important part of art.

Your finished drawings become studies on material, light, form and values, and as you work through each one of those problems, you feel yourself becoming better.

so good it almost overshadows the bad. love your colors, especially the clouds.

blurry buildings and background make great city building look like a screenshot of a movie, and not in a good way. Eva anatomy looks fucked up, especially the neck and jaw and shoulders and elbows and chest. actually, it looks like its got one big leg coming out of its pelvis with an auxiliary leg to the right. finally the exploding wrist or building is just necessary action in an otherwise complete scene. you dont need dynamic shit going on in just one small section, it ruins the atmosphere

you are constructing the drawing, but following the construction too strictly. it's almost like you are constructing it, then for the rest you are using your imagination and memory instead of referencing the model. You are just tracing an outline you've made.

personally I find it best to just do no construction like i did for the bottom one, and only draw the subject once. it might lead to more mistakes early on but it'll be much better for you in the long run. you'll draw things twice as fast, and the likeness will be more accurate.

>>
>>2744459
draw from life don't waste your time drawing photos and "learning anatomy"
>>
>>2744457
ah thank you, I see it now. I do tend to go overboard with construction sometimes because I want to understand the thing I'm drawing, instead of simply copying. Maybe it has to do with reading Hampton too much.
>>
>>2744461
So you're essentially saying once I know the muscles exist and where they attach, I should learn the forms from life drawing?
>>
>>2744464
you need to learn to copy first before you can do anything else. once you can copy exactly what you are drawing making actual fine art comes fairly quickly afterwards. do the boring stuff early on so you can have fun later.
>>
>>2744468
no, im saying you should learn to draw from life instead of using your memory and imagination. if you are an artist, I should be able to point at anything in a room and you should be able to draw it.
>>
>>2744476
Well, it certainly can't hurt.
I've been getting really tired of drawing from anatomy books anyway.

need to fix my lineweight, my proportions, my right hand, perspective
>pretty much need to fix everything
>>
>>2744476
I've come to realize something.
You're predominately upset over the lack of form in the "anatomy" as you've correctly stated.

I see now that I've been letting the muscles control me, and not the other way around. Virtually none of the arm muscles are truly constructed, and they're simply flat, 2D shapes devoid of any sort of form. I've simply been arranging them according to insertion, and that's pretty obvious to someone that can actually draw human anatomy.

I'll still take your advice and do some life-drawing for 25 hours as I need to brush up on it anyway, but I'm fairly certain this is the true heart of the problem. Once I'm done with that, I'll go ahead and read Michael Hampton's figure drawing book once more. I read it in little increments and I had no clue as to what I was really drawing since I had no background in anatomy the first time around, so I was creating "arms" that were more like tubes with spheres.

Now I see where I was really screwing up.

>>
>>2744544
>99% of computer shit is gay

You sound 14 years old.
May I interest you in some Judas Priest albums?
>>
>>2744544
Well just because it's digital doesn't take away from the fact that it's art nonetheless.

While I agree CGI is more widely used, it more convenient really.

The last statement implies you are saying that every digital artist is ruining art. I don't think that's necessarily true.

I can tell you that the main reason I switched to digital was to save money in the long run, I don't have money lying around to spend so I can't do traditional as much as I wanted to until I can get a few paychecks rolling in, now I can't say that all people that switched to digital were doing it for the convenience or money saving factor, but I just know that it's kind of a new take on art, and since technology is ascending at somewhat a decent rate, it's better to get with the times.
