return from looney bin edition

Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Looks kind of cool, let me just point out the most obvious flaws:

-forehead size and angle
-look at the shadow around his nose hole
-shape of the upper- and underlip are wrong
-pay attention to the area between his underlip and chin
-pay more attention to the angle of the ear, it determines the tilt of the head, its really importait
Doesn't look bad though, you are getting there.

the skelly is moving towards the pelvis whereas the drawing seems to be moving away from it creating more space for the belly.

The keyring clearly touches the metal part of the black key, but you didn't draw that.

Just under half the green key is visible behind the black key, but you drew it almost completely unobscured.

Metal parts of the keys are way to thin.

might be good to try drawing from images first to enhance your drawing skills

a good way to make sure a drawing is accurate is to look at it side ways or upside down along with the image so you lose preconceptions of how the item should behave and observe only the shapes it makes

I'm sorry I never appreciated you before, anon.
>>
>>2732990
well when you draw purely from life you aren't showing people the objects and letting them make the comparison so you do have some wiggle room for potential mistakes. really depends on what you are looking to do. Drawing from images makes it easier to find mistakes and improve accuracy, but drawing from life is usually more useful for other skills like understanding structure of objects.

For this one I just looked at the picture >>2732670 and said to myself "he wears a top hat, a round nose and face, a moustache, and fallen eyes" and drew it, only looking at the reference every two minutes or so.

So, without comparing it to the reference, how is it?

i know some really good artists who i think colourpick. is it so bad? it helps one understand sunlight and shadow does it not?
>>
>>2733677
90% of art is experience through trial and error; if they colorpick it's because they've already trained the skill of choosing the right colors. Now they just don't want to waste time only to obtain something similiar to what they are copying/referencing.

And if they are doing fanarts, they likely colorpick to mantain the same color palette of the original.

While drawing a study,
is it a bad practice to start with the facial features, and then draw the face outline?
it's easier for me to measure distance and angle between eyes, then nose, and then mouth cause they are closer to each other, and then when I have then I can more accurately copy the face outline

whereas when I would start with the outline, it always comes too short/long or crooked in general

the way people usually do it is draw the face shape before the facial features. it's useful when drawing from imagination. so yeah i'd recommend training yourself to draw from macro to micro. but if you're more comfortable doing it the other way around that's cool, nobody can tell you how to draw.

What is the point of first image(stick figure) when it proves useless in the second one? I don't see how anyone could construct proper anatomical figure on that you drew without having an original reference to copy from. Apart from that, it's a good beginner drawing. I suggest you go further into analyzing what those stick figures are useful for, read Hampton for example.

With the first one, I can guide myself to construct the torso and the hips and furthermore of that, allows me to have an idea to where I will draw the muscles.

if you want to draw at an ok level then just make sure you are going to be content with it. being an artist comes with a lot of self reflection and feeling inadequate in order to improve, sometimes its hard to get to a point where you are personally satisfied and at the same time can be viewed as decent

the bottle is really lazy but I guess it's irrelevant. Hand on left is poorly measured but the construction is coming along. Thump tampers really incorrectly in both hands. the area between the thumb and index finger in the right hand seems like it was totally an afterthought.

Keep drawing but pay more attention.
>>
>>2732860
Man I feel this so empty, you aren't bad at drawing, but you lack the sensitivity just sit down and think what is it about this pictures you are drawing that makes you feel amazed.

The look on their eyes is lifeless, I can't relate myself to those on your drawing.

Example:

The ladie is looking up expressionless, but her look is so powerful you know, she seems to be watching a god, but she watches fearless, expressionless, she is not afraid. I could talk all day long about my perspective of this image.

The lady on your drawing is watching up too, but is her expression tells me she's kind of bored, looking deeply in to the nothing, she doesn't have an expression but she reflects....

well... I can't tell

Try to not just improve your skills but your sensitivity to the details, it's all in the details
>>
>>2733006
I like it, I was telling the other guy how he was talented but lack the sensitivity, I can feel this image, she's alive.

good work
>>
>>2733010

I will.

This drawing and I say this because anyone can tell this is not your drawing, this is a drawing without an owner. it seems like the archetype of art.

and what is an archetype, for the curious

it's an structure that we all know but everyone transform it from their own perspective.

(for people really curious on archetypes, investigate Carl Jung, Sigmund Freud's colleague)

You visualize this "style" as artistic. It's seems like one of those drawings you see in a galery but you know it doesn't belong in there. You aren't creating anything you are trying to imitate what you see on art, but art is an extension of your original self. Please don't try to be an artist, just express your own originality on every piece you ever paint

I want to see the real you in your drawings. Maybe if you stopped watching art for a while and just focus on your own personal talent, you will start to grow as an artist and stop looking for one outside of you

I mean mass drawing from reference will help, but its better to just think of your figures doing things. We see humans everyday so its not that hard to come up with poses in your head, thinking of the figure as a collection of simple 3d shapes alse helps.
>>
>>2734147
I don't post my art but I also crit. Your contributions are appreciated anon. You could improve your crits by saying something more constructive than 'improve your skills'; like 'work on values', or 'your forms need work'.

Beginner thread is less about expression and more about getting technical fundamentals down.

Still, acknowledgement of crits would be nice. Even if it's just 'thanks critbro'.
>>
>>2734191
I don't see how I can implement correct values and proportion using just my imagination
>>
>>2734147
>I don't know how to draw

you also don't know how this works. The point here is that beginners post their work and then experienced or more skilled people (not beginners) give critique to help the beginners.

But a lot of beginners, such as yourself, somehow believe THEY should give crit to other beginners. What happens is that they give bad and distorted advice, because they don't know what the fuck they're talking about, and the whole thing goes to shit because you can't tell if your post is being critiqued by senpai or a total amateur with no idea that he's misleading you and everyone else reading his bullshit.
>>
>>2734147

>I'm an artist but I don't know how to draw

For me, until I won't achieve perfection in my art or at least validation on the famous art critic forum /ic/, I will never call myself an artist. I'm but a guy that tries to draw. I think you have to earn being called an artist. And always look critically at your work. I think my drawings are shit and I wanna get better, I wanna become an artist
>>
>>2734151
no. drawing isn't a physical skill, it's a mental exercise. if you're not thinking about what you're putting down on paper, you're not really learning. it wouldn't hurt to do a fuckton of drawings from reference though. just keep trucking because it takes a LOT of practice and study to be able to draw poses from your imagination.
>>
>>2734224
>>2734233

Thank you very much for your time and honest opinions, I tried to help by sharing what I do know about art in general, tried telling you that art isn't just about technique and if you just try to improve your skills but not your sensitivity towards art, is not going to be soulful in my humble opinion.

Sorry if I sound like a jerk, that wasn't my objective at all, but I guess you guys are right and I'll take my opinion somewhere else

>>2734147
the word basics are thrown around a lot, but i dont quite understand it. What specifically am i supposed to do.

I do appreciate your reply though.
>>
>>2734242

What I meant was that your drawing is kind of formless, a form for instance could be a sphere or a square in the most basic form, if you try to see the drawing as an structure for this forms, you'll have an easier time visualizing where the lements go, like nose and the eyes, Also when you are shading it'll be easier, take the tip of the nose as example, it's an sphere, if you think it that way it's easier to just shade an sphere that a single nose, knowing that there aren't tow identicals noses in this world
>>
>>2734241
you don't sound like a jerk, but really this forum isn't the place to cultivate aesthetics, it's a place to learn drawing technique. Generally speaking, ofc.

you can voice your opinions on finished works imo, but us beginners don't need those kind of curve-balls this early in the game.
>>
>>2734245

Oh i guess I got you wrong the first time, I finally got your point and I agree with you now that you put it that way.

you guys don't need my kind of opinion because you just see this as drawing, not art at all. my bad I guess, I'm new on this board and this was the only thread where I saw real interest in art, too bad it was just an ilusion of my excitement
>>
>>2734244

>>
>>2734147
>>2734241
you don't have to be an artist to critique art. but you are completely on the wrong thread to be giving feedback my dude. beginner thread is more about technique, not interpretation. we're not saying that the 'soul' of art isn't important, but without technique we wouldn't be able to communicate anything. it's cool, you don't need to apologize for trying to start a conversation about art. i hope you don't get discouraged and keep drawing.
>>
>>2734248
no, problem buddy. if its art you're looking for you've come to the wrong place that's for sure. but thanks for stopping by though! goodbye
>>
>>2734212
My bad, i assumed you meant that you had trouble inventing poses. When it comes to proportion i think grinding reference would actually help. It sounds like youre trying to tackle too many skills in one figure drawing. Try focusing on say 2 skills (like anatomy and proportion) everytime you practice till youre comfortable and THEN start polishing over that understanding.

This is a really dumb question but how important is it to really "see" what we're looking at? If I'm drawing a model and I'm purely focusing on lines and contours will that help me internalize how the human figure works or am I just photocopying what's in front of me?

I'm going through Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and I can't wrap my head around how this process will help me fully UNDERSTAND my subject.
>>
>>2734372
Sometimes photocopying what you see is enough for some people. Following Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain will help you do that, but it's real purpose is to gain an understanding of what symbol drawing is and develop an eye for measuring values/distances/proportions/etc.

The next step after washing the symbols out of your brain is to replace them with 3d forms, and you construct using those symbols instead (cubes/spheres,cylinders/etc).
>>
>>2734372
I've heard people say this is the go to book when learning to draw, but I'd rather practise instead of read a book. Mind giving me a short explanation of what drawing on the right side of the brain actually means?
I've given it a skim and found that there's many exercises, will these exercises improve my art skill even though I'm not taking in how they'll help me improve?
>>
>>2734372
Here's my derp'd advice: If you copy lines you learn to copy lines good. If you look at something, then try to draw it without looking you learn the form of that thing.
Or rather, you learn what you don't know about the form of that thing. (when you see what about it you fuck'd up). Then you can look again, and study what you now know you didn't know.

I agree with you.
3 out of 4 of the drawings are studies of works by Picssso/Cezanne. In my defense, Picssso's early work was very derivative (he took a lot of inspiration from Toulouse-Lautrec). I'm doing the same and establishing some aesthetic understanding before I move on to my own original work. I'm trying to learn from the masters.
I do understand what you're saying though, and it's time for me to move on. I want to create truly original work.

it's never too late
Wasn't Gaugin around 19 when he got interested in painting? Or maybe even older. Van Gogh started studying painting when he was 27, I think, but he studied a bit of drawing in school when he was around 13.

So don't worry about being 19, also if you enjoy drawing and will draw a lot you'll get better. I'm not good at drawing, I started getting into more seriously month or two ago, (I tried in the summer, started with drawabox and copying some postcards, but stopped), but I really enjoy drawing and painting. It may sound cliche, but it isn't the destination that matters, i.e gettin gud or painting a beautiful painting, but the journey, i.e the act of painting or drawing itself. And if you enjoy it, you'll continue to do it, and eventually you'll get good.
>>
Hijacking this thread.

I'm wondering, why aren't people creating their own threads to post their own art in much like sketchbooks on conceptart.org? Wouldn't it be a good motivation for people to post daily so their thread doesn't die? Critique would also be more personal and we'd all get to know each other a little better.
>>
>>2734661
Not enough space within ten pages. /ic/ isn't just about drawing itself, there's a lot of discussion of business and various styles of art. You can shill yourself in the ad thread, you don't need your own.
>>
>>2734661
there is a drawthread for it, and there would be too many threads.
General threads are better for it, because you can post your art, critique others, ask question and you don't have to monitor a lot of threads.

How did I do :(((
>>
>>2734761

Be more patient and precise. You have typical beginner mistakes: your proportions are off and are getting more and more fucked up as you draw.

To keep proportions in check divide your ref accordingly and orient towards points and lines of interest.
You drew face from profile while in truth camera lens is more up and not completely to the side.

See my example: I drew one line from the corner of the lips to the beginning of the brow and another one from the chin to the bottom of the nose.

If you copy those lines on your drawing, you see that while distances from those points of interests are more or less the same, your chin is a lot lower than the corner of the mouth while it should be at the same level: this disfigures your nose.

Moreover see the distance horizontally between red and blue line - it's much smaller on reference while it is 30%-50% on your drawing.

Notice points of interests and keep those proportions. It's incredibly important when you do face because even small deviations can make your drawing/painting a lot worse (or better).

Is it normal to have an extremely hard time with Fun with a pencil? All of my loomis blooks turn out horribly disfigured and shit.

I'm absolutely trash at drawing from imagination. I can copy from real life and photos thanks to Keys to Drawing but once I don't have an exact reference, even my stick figures look horrible. Is there anything at all I can do about this? This is so fucking fustrating.

sweet jesus more of the cutie.

You're going too broad and heavy on the values (your ears, bags, lips, pupils, eyebrows etc are not that dark) and you're symbol drawing too.

some funi business going on in there
focus on the important things like values and edges first instead of fancy brush work
>>
>>2734983
you should take your own advice. you've disregarded the form in the original and erased the facial structure so it's a featureless egg-blob of a head.

>>

form and facial structure isnt what i was even talking about. his values r all over the place and im pretty he might have refd this. so i did't feel the need to fix structure...
>>
>>2734998

but you made her skin look like glass
>>
>>2734998
you're not that much better than him though. you improved the lips and smoothed out the skin, but that's all.
>>
>>2734998
his values aren't even bad, just unrefined. and yeah, he almost certainly ref'd it, which is why his looks better and why you shouldn't have attempted to correct it without seeing it. sorry dude, but your correction is more harmful than helpful.

I’m making a drawing with the pose on the left, some stuff in the foreground will cover the rest, but I still want to know what the full body would like if it were showing. a red line would be nice..

>>
if i could give you all advice it would be to finish your fucking drawings

stop being afraid to lay the graphite down on the paper. GO DARK. its like you're afraid of intricate details like corners of eyes and hair and ears.

how should we know if its good or bad if its not finished yet?
>>
>>2735045
wow you sure showed me, beginner.
>>
>>2734983
>>2734998
How do you render like on the right? I try soft brush and still can't achieve.
>>
>>2735048
What if the reference is really light? Should I still go dark for practises sake?

>tfw not magical power that'd make you draw better
>>
>>2735082

The other guy here, but it's just an illusion of light. Also you will often notice opposite problem - you can't really go dark dark like IRL. There's just no black like that.

Getting darker is better, you can always brighten the drawing or painting (unless you use watercolor but none of you fucks can) if you really need, but getting too light will just confuse you and won't be accurate.
>>
>>2735099
There's the rarest, most magical power out there, more valuable than unicorn farts. It's called patience.
Also, try not to rely on artstyle, try drawing the real thing and pay attention to what makes the part you're trying to draw look like the part you're trying to draw.

your brain is highly attuned to faces so it notices very minor flaws
>>
>>2735127

You need perspective and foreshortening, to start. Your figures and your backgrounds look flat as hell.

Good, you have almost no symbol drawing. The main problem here is the chicken scratching, and measuring. The nose bridge is really small too
