Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Ok so the first sketch is a gesture that turned out pretty stiff (I boxed it in because I couldnt help myself) and the second one is a figure that I built from ground up and only loosely based on the ref, I think it turned out better than the gesture but I lost the sex appeal of the ref, are there any good tutorials on drawing assess and legs, or books that I can see? Or am I just missing something simpler?

>are there any good tutorials on drawing assess and legs, or books that I can see? Or am I just missing something simpler?
You just need to think a bit more about the gesture. I did a quick one with just a few lines and put some arrows showing things I think are important.

Just pay attention to how there is that wonderful twist in her body (you can even see the skin folds from this). Her hip is jutting out creating a nice arc, her shoulder is high and to the right and then the arm projects down off it. Her spine is tense and swoops down. Getting these angles and curves right will set up the figure and the pose.

Knowing more anatomy too will help, but that can be said of almost all things relating to the figure. Just pay a bit more attention to what the pose is doing and why, and then try to draw that. You probably want to practice both gesture drawing like I did, construction, and then blending the two. Constructing over a bad or misunderstood gesture will obviously lead to bad results.

Use a harder edged brush, and then just observe the shapes and values more closely. A lot of things are inaccurate in your painting. It is best if you start using bigger brushes then gradually use smaller ones as you get into more detail.

Value changes are too extreme I think. You've got all these brushstrokes with all these hard contrasts (value and edge) in all these different places. I suspect a more subtle approach would work better. Post the ref though if you want specifics.

Has anyone that finished the Erik Olson perpective series give me advice on part 9?

I want to skip the studies, this past 2 months have been absolute hell, I've learned a lot, but holy shit I just want to draw something less static, or more creative. So I just want to get part 10 over with and move to something else.

So far the studies have barely tought something interesting and most of them is just Erik struggling to use Photoshop. Can I just skip them (7-26) and go into 10? I don't know if the 6 hours of studies will help and I hope someone can help me know if I should watched or not.

the traditional version of flipping your canvas is holding your paper up to a mirror. you could also stand back from what you're working on and critique it from afar

Absolute beginner here.
I know I suck and I should study real construction and perspective first, I'm doing this as a side study to do more entertaining stuff and help me with motivation, I'm not treating this like my complete study routine. Anyways, I've been trying to draw some references using a blue fineliner for all the "construction" and then when I think I'ce got a pretty good idea of the posture I'll do a black lineover avoiding doing any chicken scratches. You're at the stage where I was some time ago. Unfortunately, you will spend a lot of time in it. What you should do in my opinion. First of all, you should return to the absolute basics to convert again, taking into account every detail of it you will surely help. your knowledge of drawing is already a significant start to see certain things to understand is unfortunately a lot of small details that adversely affect the appearance of your work because as I mentioned earlier, you should return to the base to convert and once again releasing every detail I think that if you perform this step, say two will spend three months of the study will notice enormous effects also success

Yeah I guess yall are right. But I just haven't been able to finish any book that I'd start. Literally every book I've started to read I stopped around the 30 ~ 40 page mark. I will admit that my "studying" is very flawed. I never stick to one thing for more than a day while also only drawing maybe 2 ~ 3 hours a day depending on how a feel.

Day 1 - Oh lets draw some heads
Day 2 - Oh lets draw some bodies
Day 3 - Lets work on perspective
Day 4 - Lets try some random traditional drawing
Day 5 - Lets try and paint
Day 6 - Lets watch a video on anatomy and try it out for 2 hours
Day 7 - Lets draw some eyes

and repeat.

If you can afford it, go for it. It was worth it for me. People like to downplay the advantages of a screen tablet here, but personally I love my 13HD. Actually improved my (digital) art quite a bit, too - I'm still not as fluent with it as I am on paper, but it's much closer. Most importantly, it's a lot more fun to use, so I draw on it more.

YMMV though - it won't make you improve faster, since paper is the to learn on, at least until you get the basics down. But it's a fun toy and doing 100% studies can get demoralizing

Shape: First thing that sticks out to me is it's very flat. A few things contribute to this: a lack of full understanding of anatomy (or forms, at least), lighting, and the level of rendering. I'm pretty convinced that if you put another hour into this, it would look a lot better. I know you're working from a screenshot but I think pushing the gesture and exaggerating the movement (through the hair and sash particularly) would make this piece pop a bit more. Harder edges would also help.

Colour and Values: Very dark, you should push your light colours. Interestingly enough you should also be pushing your darks; there's nothing wrong with including pure black. You're sitting in the lower values (1-4ish) without touching the others. Limited value ranges are okay but this doesn't have enough contrast imo. The background is something? Looks very rushed and is too saturated (or high in chroma, if you prefer)

Pic related I marked out the major forms with shapes and added the line of action. Also changed the contrast a bit. Like I said before; I'd exaggerate the pose a bit. From the picture hopefully you can see the hips/pevlis perspective looks odd - I'd personally tilt it forward a bit to smooth out the pose.

I'm going through the sticky and tried drawing picasso's stravinsky upside down and wow, this is really difficult and uncomfortable. will it get less strenuous soon?
>>
>>2729330
These are excellent. I will note that with both the barrell and the mouse they don't line up very well. Ideally using shapes to simplify perspective means that the centre of the object should match with the centre of the shape.

>>2729321
With this, I'm not sure where the light source is, or if there is multiple light sources. The object on the left (which unfortunately I don't acutally know what it is; pretty sure that's my bad though because it's form is very clear) clear has one marked but the lamp seems to be reflecting light in all directions.

When doing a portrait, cutting off at the neck is always jarring, at least put their shoulders in.
Be more gentle with your blacks and how much yellow you're putting into her skin. To learn to control your colour try doing paintings from life like in this thread. >>2723254

Study Asaro heads, get an idea of the planes of the face and where to put your light. A lot of your strokes seem haphazardly placed, especially around the shadows of her neck, making her seem wrinkly. Go for confident blocks and then blend it down.

Try use this to study how to light the head, you can control the angle of the lighting as well.

This was stuff I did back in the middle of May about two weeks into digital. Told myself I was gonna do one of these every day after work. Only ended up doing it for 3 days. If I would have continued I would be pretty decent at digital portraits by now.

i fell like i should know the answer to this already.

is high resolution necessary to paint a good picture? i don't get some people paint 6000 pixels width/height. when do i use high res?
>>
>>2730010
>is high resolution necessary to paint a good picture
No, but painting on a smaller canvas limits how many details you can put in because there are fewer pixels. In general you want to paint on large canvas sizes, then when you save a jpg to post online you resize it to be smaller.

Yeah, it is definitely both. But that's alright. The only two things I'd say to do is practice good perspective with boxes, and to analyze the human form. Don't do two boxes and try to turn that into a human by drawing the contours over-top. It won't work out well. Instead, gradually turn those boxes into more organic shapes. The torso box will eventually become the rib cage. The box for the waist will eventually become curved and soft. Then do the same thing with arms, legs, etc.

In other words, practice perspective because you need that shit to be strong. And practice taking your simple forms to more complex forms.

Is it ok to use that sort of eye-cave when the face is at that angle, so that the eye is closer to the contour of the face?
I've always deliberately avoided making cheeks look that putty because I though eye-caves were too synthetic and were not adverse to reality.

I was advised by another Anonymous poster to go back to draw some basic forms; this is the last thing I made before I started practicing them again, so that I could compare. I just though I'd post it in case it looked inhuman or whether any properties on the person didn't fit proportions that we are physically accustomed to.

Watch Bob Ross videos; they seriously help in accustoming yourself to art as an illusion

Study a landscape painting by JMW Turner in Acrylic (one of his earlier paintings)

Study the book "Perspective Made Easy"

Watch Stefen Kozar's watercolour tutorials, the few that he has, on Youtube.com

Study lots of trees and buildings from life?

Study and draw basic shapes. Once you feel confident with your basin shapes: chop them up and turn them into strange, irregular shapes.

Go and join a local figure drawing class

These are all terrible suggestions, so please take my direction with a grain of salt.
>>
>>2730277
Also: colour theory is incredibly useful for landscapes. Make axiomatic colour diagrams, and take the three primaries of the medium you're using and document the component colours making up the colour you're testing. Then: record the colour next to it., so that later you're able to re-abstract that colour during any point in any of your projects. I used to do this a lot, and I'd say the colours are the strongest part of my work now.

My first checkpoint is to draw in an intensely realised realist style from the mind and create fictive realistic-looking people from my mind for commisions -

Later: my aim is to take my realism and develop a second style that is stylized in a similar way to this but with a better understanding of anatomy, proportions, shapes and perspectives. I'm aware that most ideas here need to be discarded: the hideously large ears and such, but there's certain qualities about this picture such as the contour of the eye and the purposeful slight jaggedness of the lines that I'd like to keep.

Are my goals as an artist bad ones? Truly I'd like to learn as much as I can about all aspects of the creation of 2d visual Art now

some random draws, how am i going?
>>
>>2730201
Not that anon, but in the same position and I think I also had the same bad idea of drawing contours on top of boxes.

What do you mean by the torso box "eventually becomes" the rib cage? Do you mean that you start with a box and then you "sculpt" or "carve out" the ribcage by subtracting/adding basic shapes? Because whenever I do that I can, at best, end up with something like a very shitty low-poly model of a ribcage. It seems impossible to get organic forms this way.

How to tell the difference between drawing an organic form in perspective and "drawing the contour"?

Everything has the same texture; the clifface, praticulartly the lighter oart in the mid section, should have harder, thinner lines to show intracacies and fractures. You should also pic a focal point, personally I'd recommend around the village because it already stands out.

>What do you mean by the torso box "eventually becomes" the rib cage?
I mean practice drawing a box for the torso, then eventually move on to drawing a box with soft, curved edges. Then add the sternum and the arch to that box. It's a progression, you practice drawing each version of the ribcage, until you reach a point where you're drawing, essentially, a rib-cage. I don't mean sculpt it over one drawing, I mean over the course of multiple drawings. Because you want to understand the progression from a simple form (box) to a complex form (ribcage with spine).
>How to tell the difference between drawing an organic form in perspective and "drawing the contour"?
Drawing contour is like drawing a silhouette. You should only ever start a drawing that way if you're very experienced. An organic form in perspective means you're accounting for foreshortening, tilt and twist of the form in question.

With the signpost I basically took a photo of a signpost (it's the best one, that is the 2 point perspective, one) drew that and then I but the drawing and the reference away and drew it from different views from memory.

I can see a little bit of an understanding but you flail at the head; you also ignore the features of the legs completely. Men and women have the same muscles (relatively) underneath but from your image you wouldn't be able to tell. Since you're practicing proportions, I'd sugest working with a skeleton first; both figures are missing some major skeletal landmarks (hips, namely). I shill proko a lot around here but checking out his anatomy series will help you alot.

whats youre supposed to do is abstract art. not surrealism, surrealism comes only from a thorough understanding of realism, but an imagination like that would be killer for abstract expressionism (which is usually what people do when they fundamentally dont understand art)

youre trying to break the human body down into simple shapes to put it on paper instead of drawing what it actually looks like. pecs are rarely so circular, collar bones rarely so defined or angled, and your linework from the ribcage to the knees is too smooth. real people, reguardless of physique are almost always complicated than that. i'd recommend tracing over some real life photos, then trying to replicate that without tracing (just from reference)

Your proportions are wrong as well as what the other anon said.

Your initial head measure exceeds the the actual height of the head and then it go bonkers from then on. Even if you were using cranial units as measurements, it goes awry.

Hands are much too high.

At least 6 to 8. But I'm not making any strides, so I guess it's a moot point.

(I work two days a week. Refining drawing is about all I can try to do to do anything. Every day is monumental failure, however, so I'm here.)

newcomer to /ic/ here, i already checked the new sticky, but i have a problem, i was recently gifted a drawing tablet, a genius m712x, should i start with pen & paper or go straight with the tablet? also opinions on jumping to the drawabox tutorials instead of going first with the keys to drawing book? i'll be a neet for 10 months, how much time should i use daily so i get good at this?
>>

you're drawing them too fast. You have a lot of sharp edges and open ends. Some of them are okay, but you need to slow down and smell the flowers anon.

>>2731802
Draw a box is good for whichever exercises develop your lines but otherwise ktd is superior. If you'd prefer the easy, digestable format though dab is fine.

Use both. What a lovely gift, I hope you thanked whoever got it for you. Tablet is excellent for practicing colours and coming up with some presentable art early on. Pen will have a more natural texture and will feel more lively early on. I also recommend proko on youtube.

i dont remember what the principle is called, but things that are farther away look more blue. you made things in the distance more pale, which is a start, but far away things look a little bit blue!

So are gestures supposed to be, like, WAY easier to draw overhand? I just noticed this recently.

If I try to lay in a figure using the tripod grip I end up with horrible stiff scribbles and even my proportions become abysmally bad. Yet if I switch to the overhand grip, the spirit of Vilppu seems to bless my hand with some sense of gesture and flow and suddenly things begin to look half decent, at least compared to my usual shit.

I'm starting to think this is related to my total inability to draw a figure digitally. WTF, am I just crazy or what. Why does grip change so much.

Getting serious about drawing and it just sucks the fucking life out of it all.

The revelation that you can't just swirl your wrists and shit out beautiful art.
Its all very structured and rigorous. There's no freedom, just fucking preschool shapes arranged in a pleasing manner. I played peg holes enough as a child.

So here I am mundanely reproducing complex, incomprehensible structures onto paper with fucking trapezoids and circles and math and fuck if all of that doesn't feel like a big middle finger to God, or mother nature, or whatever force of creation which put this shopping bag into existence.
>"A small scale with infinite complexity? Yeah, watch me mimic that with OVERLAPING FUCKING SQUARES."

I'm not even gonna ask if it gets better, because it doesn't.
At days end everyone, you, me, this whole board, every child that draws their mommy and daddy is a huge fucking cheat.
There's no shame in that, because we can't help it. Catch 22.

End blog.

Any tips/tricks when it comes to drawing curved forms/ellipses more accurately?

I'm practicing freehanding them but one side is ALWAYS lopsided. Never symmetrical/etc.

thats a fucking meme

weeb shit excels at looking good in the context of weeb shit. All that "learn real proportions then stylize it " shit is a fucking joke if all you want to do is weebshit

a huge amount of popular fan artists and weeb artists have absolute garbage fundamentals and poor understanding of constructing their characters in 3D space.
90% of fan art has characters that have no spine or a realistic pelvis or any form of muscle. All of that doesn't matter when the audience are not people that can tell
the difference and the anime art style can easily hide those things considering most anime art styles have no facial bone structure or most muscles.

i guess the question is, how good do you want to become? keep studying and practicing in the style you want if you are content with not being flexible in the future
but being able to improve in a way that lets you enjoy the art. if you want to become a solid versatile artist that can do a lot of things then you have to pipe down on
the realism.
