Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

true about the stiffness. started off as a simple figure and tried to put in a scene. i dont think you people are unstanding the perspective. its supposed to looking from on top of a wall or bridge look out to the plains/mts/lake pic is something i just googled. and im not sure what youre saying by the objects are fucked unless you mean the perspective of them? thats easily fixed

>rendering looks half assed, (the rocks, skin clothes and fur look fucking awful) well yeah thats why implied that i was still working on it. i was getting a lot of shit about the colors ealier though

>What books did you read or curses did you took?
no courses, just read the sticky books though; loomis, etc

i didnt use any references, just a pose that i found after the fact for the figure

It's a metaphor. They're telling you to learn your fundies, or properly plan your piece.

You should work on your anatomy/forms (woman and dog). There's not enough contrast imo. More depth too, looks very flat, like the foreground was just pasted over the background.

I know the fundamentals seem boring, but the faster you improve the more fun you have. Never try to hide lack of skill with rendering or detail, your drawing should have appropriate quality at every stage.

>>2657358
Not bad, but I'd recommend drawing a head (loomis), copying it many times in a row and draw on top (separate layer) to avoid perspective issues.
>>
>>2657420
>>2657420
wow good point on the background colors being overly dark. i made them lighter as i went back but didnt consider how they compared to the foreground. what do you mean about layers? and are you saying i should change the basic outline based on your colorblocks in the right pic? im using them if thats what youre talking about. i have a little more that 15 going right now. also your anatomy redline looks more like changing the pose than it does 'fixing' anatomy. shes at a 45 degree ish angle to the arm is foreshortened a bit, justifying her hand being so high. you just changed the angle of the raised arm and the other leg is turned out a bit so there wouldnt be any foreshortening of the lower leg, but my rendering probably didnt do a good job of showing that

for the helmets i actually started out with that. i think its just a lack of experience with the finer points of perspective mixed with not having solid ideas in my head thats causing me trouble. the top right is pretty bad though.

anyways, i appreciate all the feedback ive been getting

Pro tip for getting perspective and proportions right; flip the reference upside down so you draw what you're seeing rather than what you're interpreting

Looks like you're using an opaque black brush to shade. Try actually render using values rather than using a black brush.

>layers
Landscape layers, not photoshop layers.
Landscape composition can be broken down into fore, mid and background, they get lighter the further away they are because of something called "aerial perspective". The local value of your object doesn't matter here.

You need to do simple value thumbnails to make sure your contrast isn't fucked before you start actually painting.

>the redline
Yes, of course it's changing the pose. Look at pic related and read a book or something, I can't explain to you the basics of figure drawing here.
I didn't fix your anatomy 'cause you wouldn't learn anything from that. It's too early.

>rendering
Forget that. Rendering didn't mess up your drawing. Your drawing should look good with or without any amount of rendering.

It would be salvageable if you started over and payed very close attention to what has been said.
But I'd recommend grabbing a sketchbook and a pencil and studying perspective and form until you're confident with it.
Pic related is about as much as I can make out of this painting, all the mistakes that are causing you trouble happened in the beginning stages, not color/rendering.

>Contrapposto
is a term describing the natural ability of the human body to balance itself using the tilt of the major masses (head, ribcage, pelvis)
Basically, when you tilt your shoulders to the left, your hips tilt to the right to balance it. This along with your spine and legs works to achieve an even distribution of weight - and thus a natural looking pose.

Hampton's book is a good resource for this, check him out after you study the basics of perspective and form.

The dog and the pots are pretty good, actually. Just with the dog you should start with a simple construction, just like with the figure. Look at an actual dog skeleton and how long his bones are and what direction do his joints bend to avoid a major fuck-up.

The bean is good for the twisting/bending motion between ribcage and pelvis, but not for representing the entire torso.
The ribcage is best represented by an egg shape with planes chiseled on its sides. For planes you need to know boxes and for boxes you need to know perspective. That's where you need to start.

If you wanna get good at doing stuff like that that is simple and cute, you're gonna have to at least do some form studies. Spheres, cubes, cylinders, etc. Practice drawing them at different angles and with different lighting. Then you will better understand how make your characters pop. You can practice this even by doing still lives of fruit too.

Read the beginning of Perspective Made Easy

Watch Proko's videos about anatomy and construction on YouTube, they cover Loomis' method in a way I find better than reading Fun With A Pencil

It's not bad, it's just very untrained. Don't draw what you think you see, figure out how the form works by seeing where the weight lies(between the legs, equally shared), where your eye level would be viewing the picture (about the top of his head, because you can see the top of most of the forms), consider the landmarks of the body (collar bones, top of the pelvis, knees, elbows, wrists, ankles) and draw the torso and pelvis (taking note of the tilt of the shoulders and hips) before attaching limbs to it.

You're at a stage where critique won't help you much, because you don't have much of a foundation yet. You need to learn the basics. Study perspective and construction, and begin to break things down into 3D forms rather than drawing what you see before you. You have not trained your eyes to see like an artist needs to yet, and that will come with practice.

A little tip, don't use a pencil. Use a pen, because it will force you to be patient and plan out your strokes before you make them. Good luck, and don't give up.

So /ic/ I have been using my tablet for about 4 months now and I still can't consistently ghost lines with it. On paper when I am going over a line I can do it np, draw boxes etc but when I try to draw with the stylus no matter how many times I ghost a line to make a stroke it just comes out not how I wanted. I feel my hand eye coordination must be off. I can play FPS fine but when I try to draw with the stylus it just never comes out right. I've done Han's line thing multiple times and they are still off. The only times I can get decent lines are when I zoom way the fuck in. Would buying a display tablet help with this problem?

Yes. The head/chin suggests the face is 3/4 (4/5) turned to the left/down; but the features you drew suggest straight and level.

There's also a lack of shading (while the hair in the back is shaded) which adds to the discrepancy.

Which should I focus on to generally improve my drawing on a more "technical" level: gesture drawing or figure drawing? >>

Honestly you shouldn't even bother with hair at this point. Start with basic forms and get better at measurement before trying to draw people. I'm not trying to be a dick, but you drew everything completely wrong.
>>
Not an exercise, but a question: Let's say I want to draw in a more pixelized style. Think VA11 HALL-A. 150x200 sprites or so.

Am I gonna have to bite the bullet and buy a tablet, or is this feasible to do without one?

I have no idea if this is even the right board to go to for this, but I figure the art board is probably the best bet.
>>
>>2658404

A tablet is absolutely unnecessary for pixel art. You'll pretty much be drawing pixel by pixel, which is easily done with your mouse.
>>
>>2658418
At about 30,000 pixels total, to be fair. That was the main point of concern.

I used tone paper and white charcoal. I just got it, this was my first attempt at trying it out. Here's another, I wasn't too happy with.
>>
>>2658189
I have a similar experience. While you will improve, I'm pretty sure a tablet is never going to be as accurate as paper. Even the experienced seem to use ctrl-z quite often.

It will definitely be worse if you don't use it much. The first hurdle you need to get past is to not hate it (so you'll use it regularly)

To draw with it you need three things:
1. Hand-eye coordination. The mapping of hand to screen needs to be 100% natural. You can build this by using the tablet instead of a mouse or playing a game with it (I used Osu! and felt natural quickly)

2. Practice more lines and ellipses with it (Peter Han exercises etc.) You will gain precision, but don't expect paper-like results

3. Build your 3d sense, eg. the feeling that your stylus is "feeling" the form. I found this didn't carry over from paper until I deliberately practiced it. Build forms out of basic shapes and draw contour lines over them. I also used the Vilppu forms-in-a-sock exercise.

When sketching I found it helped to just draw confidently and not care about shitty lines so long as you figure out the form in the end. You will end up drawing in multiple passes anyway.
Good luck anon.

Well then you're at step 2 already! Don't give up now. Practice more diligently and narrow down the exact point/line where it goes wrong, and why. Be very slow and conscious about it. Every line must have a reason for being.

Don't get too frustrated or intent upon it though - if it still doesn't work or improve after several times, let it rest and go do something else (not necessarily drawing) for a while (ranging from a few hours to a day or so). Sometimes the brain needs time for things to click; and frustration only agitates/distracts - no one ever made a great work while gnawing his pencil to bits.

Sorry for spamming the thread with thoms, but I'm working on this and I was wondering if any of you could help me figure out why it looks kinda shitty & lifeless? Something to do with my edges being too stark?

PS don't forget to do backgrounds guys, I tried to paint on white 'cause I'm retarded and I was fucking up my colours big time before I had the context of the blue.

Wait a minute, isn't drawing haram?
>>
>>2659026
you are using the colour picker, what did you expect.
>>
>>2659031
I'm not using the colour picker, I do spend a lot of time getting them right though.
>>
>>2659033
go lie else where you dont fool us,
>>
>>2659034
Why would I lie about that? I'm trying to improve m8. I sometimes paint over the reference photo with a colour to confirm that it's close but I'm still finding the colour myself.

Just knowing theres a thread where other people are learning art motivates me to draw everyday. Love hanging out with you guys. please draw more naked men

Listen rather than giving you a harsh critique on this drawing I'm going to tell you right off the bat you lack fundamental knowledge. Does this drawing look "right" to you? It shouldn't if you have a even remotely trained eye. So start there, read keys to drawing, do the exercises in drawing on the right side of the brain.

But for fuck's sake, don't *read* the book, it'll make you want to blow out your brain.

You gave nothing but a vague suggestion. It's fine if you don't want to help or had nothing to say, but just saying 'work on everything' tells me nothing. I'm on /beg/ for a reason fampai.

>>2659638
Learn how to take suggestions. Your shit sucks, you need the sticky. Obviously reading it isn't enough. Are you fucking dense? Apply yourself.

>>
>>2659640
Hey, I can take suggestions. You have yet to say anything specific besides "sticky" which I'm already doing. You aren't being helpful and I'm letting you know that.
>>
>>2659645
Anon, you're symbol drawing. You're not observing anything properly. I told you to read and do the exercises in two books. Stop being defensive and actually apply yourself.
>>
>>2659645
Your doodle is so shit, go and read the sticky. Stop being a massive whining cunt.

>You're symbol drawing. You're not observing anything properly.

Thank you. All I wanted was actual feedback that I can work on.

You should try making it anyway! At the very least, you'll have something to compare with and draw again when you get better.

Ok so I'm starting to get into this drawing shit. I finished Betty's book, now going through Loomis. I just started to wonder this:

Guys how do you practice coloring/values and shit? Do you paint from life? What do you use to practice those, computer or warercolors/acrylics/oil/something else?
>>
>>2659848
I mean, I have a clear plan how I will practice construction, anatomy and stuff. It's probably my favorite thing to practice right now, but coloring seems really tricky and it's worrying me a bit because I don't have any clear strategy for it in my mind.

do these faggots look remotely human in shape?
>>
>>2657878
wtf are you doing... you are using the loomis head model completely wrong. its only meant as a (general guide) for the (general shape) of the average head, it doesnt include things like fat deposits and perfect facial structure... if you want one that you can trace ovver like that and actually benefit I would try the reilly planes method.

Critique my drawbox homework

Youre suppised to make a blob and then give it form using ellipses
>>
>>2660103
Try not to make your ellipsis one solid line. Play with line weight to emphasis what we should be able to see. Watch the width on your ellipsis to help sell depth, your consistent widths make it seem flat, you need to sell the folds in the form.
Be more adventurous with your organic forms and not just an erect penis all the time.

Is it just me being a beginner noob, or does this thing totally not look like a cylinder in perspective?
Shouldn't the minor axis be angled like the opposite way, towards the other vanishing point?
It's on the plane that refers to that VP after all.
