A good way to get the posture right is to pay attention to the angle of the shoulders. Yours are straight while it's very angled in the reference. That would make it a lot easier to identify gesture of the torso and the hips. Just pay attention to the shoulderline next time, it's the most obvious one.
There are a few more flaws in your drawing, but I like where you are heading, it has a pleasing asthetic to it. Just make sure to pay more attention to angles and make it more convincing. It's a great effort, I can see you tried hard in this one and it shows, keep it up!

Is it just me being a beginner noob, or does this thing totally not look like a cylinder in perspective?

>>2660552
I'm the one who posted this in that thread. Yes, that's not how a cylinder should look in perspective, this cylinder has elliptical base and is tilted to the side. But I was wrong about the axis, it should indeed align with that vanising point. However, the points where the circle touches the borders of the square (the trapezoid in perspective) should be in the middle of the edges.

Exactly, the ellispes in square exercise shows that the major axis is parallel to the sides of the "square", and the minor axis is at half.
I don't get why he said everything about the planes construction and ellipses aligning with the points in them, to then show this "cylinder" thing, it just confused me.

>I posted this in the previous beginner thread a few hours ago but it died soon after, I don't know which thread you are referring to though.
Oh, I posted the same thing in the Questions thread not long ago, there was a discussion about it.
>the ellispes in square exercise shows that the major axis is parallel to the sides of the "square", and the minor axis is at half
This is not really the case. The minor axis should indeed be aligned with the vanishing point of the sides of the cylinder (the right one) and the major axis is always 90 degrees to it. Drawing an ellipse like that can be really tricky, but here you can see a correctly built cylinder (and a couple other correct circles in perspective).
>I don't get why he said everything about the planes construction and ellipses aligning with the points in them, to then show this "cylinder" thing, it just confused me.
Yes, he probably has problems with this himself, just look at his camera demo in "everyday objects".

Slow down and think a bit more before you do each brushstroke, so that when you put it down you get the shape correct. Otherwise just continue working on it, don't stop here. Keep correcting mistakes in shape and proportion and gradually begin using smaller brushes to put in more details and specifics.

>Oh, I posted the same thing in the Questions thread not long ago, there was a discussion about it.
Nice, I'll check it out and see if I find it!
I'm currently drawing these cylinders with a few different methods, I just did the one from the planes and ellipses exercise and to me it looks much better than the example, but the major and minor axis are not 90° apart.
I'll try again now, same as before but forcing the 90° between the axes.
Aligning the minor axis with the vanishing point of the sides (right) and keping the major one at 90° gives Drawabox's drawing as a result, which feels off.

Been drawing for like 1,5 years and i think i got very decent in the constructive drawing. So the next step are values. How do i start with values? How to study values? I mean study practically, not theoretically, i have the knowledge, but im bad on executing it on canvas. So can you suggest some begginer practical exercises with values? Im looking into 2-3 values studies, but may be there are some good exercises i missed.
>>2660552
You're looking way too far into it, my dude.
As long as it looks vaguely like a cylinder in somewhat correct perspective, there's not a lot of reasons you have to go that exact about it. The point of perspective is to add depth, if the whole picture is off, one cylinder isn't gonna save you.
Also it probably looks wrong because the vanishing points are too close. Place them way off the page, outside the border of the picture and then try again.
>>2661401
Not him but are you sure? Would a cylinder like that ruin a drawing? Because I'm still at beginning at drawing. I read this thread and started to get a bit stressed of the future where I have to start studying that shit haha.
Okay, I've had a nice sleep in my cozy Europe, and now you all are probably sleeping.
>>2661401
>You're looking way too far into it, my dude.
He isn't. There's no such thing as looking too far into this stuff. You can draw cylinders like you feel they should be drawn after you make sure that you really understand them. Again, look and drawabox's drawing of a camera in his "everyday objects" lesson, you'll see why it's important.
>if the whole picture is off, one cylinder isn't gonna save you.
But if one cylinder is off it can ruin the whole picture. Like in that drawing of a camera I mentioned.
>Also it probably looks wrong because the vanishing points are too close. Place them way off the page, outside the border of the picture and then try again.
No. Once again, it looks wrong because THE POINTS WHERE THE ELLIPSE TOUCHES THE EDGES OF THE SQUARE ARE OFF. Look here >>2660569, this is the problem.
>>2661031
>>2661082
Drawabox is RIGHT about the vanishing points, the minor axis of the ellipse matches the center line of the ellipse. It aligns with the vanishing point of the sides of the cylinder (the right one), that is correct. Look here >>2661076.
THIS IS THE WRONG PART >>2660569. The dots the points where his ellipse touches the edges of the square, the small circles are where they should be.

Hello fellow european.
I can try fitting a perfect ellipse made with Paint.net in there, but it doesn't touch the walls in the marked spots.
If it touched top and bottom where the circles are put, how could it touch the sides in two different positions? Fitting an ellipse in there returns Drawabox's ellipse basically.
>>2661428
Keep it until you can draw a better one.
>>2660579
>it has to be perfect
End yourself
>>2661423
I wanted to say that you should just try to draw it how it should be, but then I decided to take my time and come up with a solution.
>>2661433
>I can try fitting a perfect ellipse made with Paint.net in there, but it doesn't touch the walls in the marked spots.
How does the program build the ellipse? What parameters does it take? Ellipse has five parameters (two focal points, two directrices, eccentricity), so it can be uniquely determined by five points (but not by any given five points). It seems that any given four points (as long as no three of them lie on one line) determine a set of ellipses with one parameter changing. Since we also have the minor axis line, we should be able to build the ellipse.
What can help you is that a parallelogram can be inscribed inside of an ellipse. We have our four points, and taking any three of them, we can draw a parallelogram that should be inscribed into the ellipse. Thus we can draw up four parallelograms which will give us up to four additional points to draw the ellipse more accurately. Here I drew two of them, the pink one by using the three upper points and the cyan one by using the three lower points. Also, if a parallelogram is inscribed inside of an ellipse, the intersection of its diagonals will be in the center of the ellipse. Thus we can find the center (circled).
>>2661583
>up to four parallelograms
fix

>>2661796
What matters is that it still has some good points: the form and shading are correct, the only thing that went wrong is the proportions since it's foreshortened. Biggest issue is the head is too small and the neck is thus considered non-existent. You can try to salvage it, or you can try again. If you try again, first make sure the proportions look right before spending all that time on details.
>>2660627
you probably see it, too. The upside down one seems more accurate, since you focused more on what you saw and not on the idea of a figure you have in your head
Please critique my blobs. Please ignore the first few.

>>2661839

Just flip the image and see if they still hold up.
If you want improvement then keep grinding hours
>>2661583
>How does the program build the ellipse?
No idea, but it at least makes them straight and specular along their axes, better than I can draw them.
I can only fit it snugly in two ways, the one I showed earlier in red with the minor axis aligned with the center of the cylinder, and this way with the minor axes towards the left VP.
In the end, is Drawabox's construction correct? It looks bad though.
>>2661314
wot kind of brushes?
>>2661839
Sloppy, was it supposed to be fast? Take your time, ghost your lines, try to visualize what you're going to do. Sketching does not mean moving faster than you can think. Intuition comes with time and practice, and with intuition comes speed.
Your ellipses are too flat: they have long straight lines. Try by drawing the major AND minor axes first, then using those as guides. In fact, first try a few pages of ellipses, in a lot of rotations and scales.
>>2661002
I don't get it
My construction seems fine, but when I have to add details it always comes out looking terrible
What am I doing wrong?
For you guys having trouble with ellipses, keep in mind that the "rule" of the minor axis going to the vanishing point is not a mathematical fact, but rather a coincidence where in many cases it lines up rather closely. There are some good diagrams here showing how it starts to diverge more and more as you go to the extremes: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php/270701-A-question-on-circle-in-perspective

It comes out terrible because your construction is not fine. If you work digitally, flip the canvas once in a while and if you work traditionally, look at your work in front of a mirror. That way you can spot mistakes more easily.
In your construction there are a lot of symmetry and perspective errors.
>>2661848
You're supposed to go over the ellipses three times before lifting your pen which I think assists in the sloppiness. I didn't really care about making the blobs look tidy because it doesn't matter how they look.
I honestly don't think my ellipses are that flat though, there was one in the middle which was incredibly flat but after that one I think I learned from it. What do you think?

Line sloppiness is fine when reinstating lines, its just the form is sloppy. Judging from your drawings, your technique is unrefined. Try and draw with more than your wrist: like shoulder, elbow.
Your line weight is better than your first attempts; try and blend it a little more so its not as apparent.
Its an overall improvement but again; sloppy. Don't hang yourself up on it. Try another exercise and come back to it. Maybe draw cylinders; the symmetry and perspective will help your control.

you cant just shortcut it and think that you get good style/presentation. >>2662658
You're right, the nose fucks everything up, it comes down way too much and thus lowers the mouth, making it look weird overall.
>>2662658
michael jackson pls go
Is there a different source other than Drawabox where I can learn how to draw organic shapes well? I'm trying to give certain things the same look of volume and depth that pic related has, but I end up looking to much into the whole process.
Abstraction
just
>>2662518
biggest issue is the nose, eyes and mouth aren't centered. the face looks like it's tilting forward
How do I anatomy w/o ref? Reading Hampton currently
>>2662876
Your outline is too dark and too thick, it flattens the drawing. Proportions are alright though so I don't think you'll have too much trouble with the anatomy if you learn to make your shadows and forms clearer.
>>2662876
Loomis, not memeing
>>2662876
Studies. A fucking lot of them. Not just doing them mindlessly - analyzing, questioning. Why does this look like this? What happens if it were in a different angle? Once you gather all this knowledge, drawing figures from imagination becomes easy. Granted, it'll take a really long time but if you want it enough you'll get it. Also she has no tail.
>>2662790
Draw-a-box covers organic shapes too
Newbie learning poses. Yes I know chicken scratch, but I'm focusing on gestures right now.
>>2662918
Just trying out some lighting. Proportions are weird yes, enormous hands yes.
>>2662930
Without reference btw, except for the staff one and the kick
>>2662916
Yeah, but I still don't understand the lesson that's on there. I'm not sure if I'm thinking too much about what they're trying to each when it comes to organic shapes or construction
>>2662935
yeah, now that i see, its pretty gross
>>2662824
that's a good excuse anon
>>2662930
these are not gestures
>>2662918
God, this image is worse than the two faces earlier. This one really gives me the creeps. I almost want to throw up really, anon. Please, stop posting this. Go to the anime thread.

Trypophobia?

you'll have to unlearn a lot of bad habits but it CAN be done

>how do you resize
>>2663160
At least he deleted the previous ones.
>>2663139
Mate, open it in paint and use the resize button. It's rotating it because you're posting the file from your phone
>>2663139
didnt even read the OP huh

Just kill me pls
why are my proportions always so fucking bad? Im just NOT improving. the only way for me to get a decent drawing is if I painstakingly measure and cheat every line. even then, im just copying a 2d image so im not actually learning anything. i feel like im autistic, like i just cant grasp what im suppose to grasp
>>2661922
i really like the haphazard shading you used in this, reads p well from thumbnail too. mind linking reference to give a more accurate critique?
>>2661922
Kind of chickenscratchy around her chin area, try using thinner lines. Her eyes also look wonky
>>2662281
nice. her ear looks a little disconnected from her face, not sure what that lump of hair is behind her neck, and her nose/cheek area looks kind of strange, but i like this. got a ref?
>>2662333
Just
>>2662406
So bad
>>2662918
>>2662974
i'm sorry
>>2663160
Nah if he's doing it on an android they can be little shites when you're trying to rotate it.
>>2663206
draw until you measure lines subconsciously.
>>2663339
saw that movie a while ago, very good
>>2663332
i like it.
This one is really hard, how long did it take you guys to get past this exercise?
>>2663360
Resizing was pretty easy, it took me just one attempt.
>>2663206
>im just copying a 2d image so im not actually learning anything
wat
I'm not sure if I'm doing this right.
So, using the shoulder means to raise your elbow off anything and just hover while you purely use your shaky shoulder?
I realize you can also use your elbow as a pivot, but that doesn't allow as much range.
People are talking about the former over the latter right? I'm just kind of curious so I know which to practice.
>>2663366
Well, I'm posting from my phone at work, but if you know any reliable mobile software i can use to edit it that would be waaay more productive than what you've just said.
>>2661289
It makes sense from the point of view of most other areas -- in art you can pretty much study any aspect whenever. Everything is intertwined, but only a few things (form, proportion, values,p perspective) are really necessary fundamentals under everything else, and you get those from most books on the more abstract stuff. Whereas in engineering, you'd never hand someone a book on microcontroller design when they're still learning circuit analysis.
>>2662333
If I don't see you tomorrow right here I'm gonna be real upset m80

>>2663407
>nose signal takes a day to response
Not gonna make it.
>>2663340
theres no point in even practicing if you are just going to do the side by side, some size photocopy digital thing. might as well trace
>>2663417
Beginner thread is over the-
Oh, we are in the beginner thread.
>>2663417
But tracing doesn't teach you anything. Learning to observe and copy let's you build up some useful knowledge so you can draw better from imagination.
so how it look so far
>>2663426
Sure if you're a retard and all you do is copy pictures forever, but it's useful for learning how things look, and how to paint them on your own. Also isn't that the guy that just manipulates photos?
>>2660396
Any crit on placement of facial features would be appreciated
>>2663417
Genuine question, where are we actually supposed to place the reference? Placing it on a smaller window in P.S. makes it obscured whenever I click the main canvas.. I'm also on a pretty small laptop so I don't have that much space. Should I just print the ref out?
>>2663438

something a black guy would have embroidered into a leather jacket/10
Could be worse, but it looks like she has literally no torso.

i am a black and ill fix the torso thanks
>>2660604
Use a finer round brush
>>2663457
no problem fambalaya, keep at it
>>2660565
Anyone know how to make a full piece look finished? Also any places i fucked up which aren't already obvious? Thanks
>>2663469
Wait sorry I forgot
>>2662533
same here, I grip the pen so hard and look at the paper really close, it's so frustrating
>>2663471
you have to spend hours layering values which is why i fucking hate graphite
>>2663472
Keep at it, I've been at it for two days and have seen serious improvement. Can almost do a straight line freehand across a page.
>>2663471
the neck's a little wonky, her sternocleidomastoid continues straight down where yours bends off to the right
How do map out the body with 3D shapes like the top? I clearly don't know what I am doing. Any videos?
>>2663500
Second attempt. Should I be trying to find the horizon line/eye level before doing this?
>>2663500
Did you do the top drawing? It's slightly better because the pose is more dynamic contrary to the one on the bottom but the construction is lacking on both.
Start by picking an image with foreshortening, it makes it easier to show depth and use volumes. And more importantly be more careful with your ellipses and simple shapes. There's no need to draw 10 wrapping lines for each cylinder if they are poorly drawn. Only two ellipses are necessary but don't rush it.
>>2662371
>>2663439
>Genuine question, where are we actually supposed to place the reference?
In a smaller window beside the one where you draw. Or just paste it where you draw since for this exercise you don't need to zoom in.
>Should I just print the ref out?
Well that's an option.
>>2663454
Shades are not very accurate (like on the lower part of the nose), that contour over the lips looks like you're symbol drawing, same with the eye. She has a different nose shape and her lips are flat in your drawing.
>>2663428
absolutely crap and you should stop
>>2663475
mate, i've been at it for five days with these ghosting exercises. still shaky. starting to wonder if i have parkinsons or some shit
i am struggling so much with this. i feel like it went straight from clear rules and a set solution to what is "correct" straight to "fucking eyeball everything".
>>2663563
don't worry. fuck this part of the exercise, it's not as important at this stage as he makes it out to be
>>2663557
doesnt seem like the right way to encourage growth here friend
>>2663563
Draw a box is complete shit a perspective and learning from him or her will make you worse. That drawing is a fisheye perspective of a flat wall of cubes, not a sphere of cubes, this is fucking confusing for beginners. None of those "rotated" cubes would share the same vanishing point or horizon line. Andrew Loomis' Successful Drawing has a great section on perspective. I would suggest practicing by drawing a large scene with a flight of stairs rather than this garbage.
>>2663474
Do you know of any other mediums that are decent?
>>2663663
Black pen is great if you dont have a tablet. Just get a cheap 20 pack for 3 bucks.
