AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA edition

Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VfDTpLLVl5bWUGWguswKpPFml533luI8-NBd1EGYHnA/edit

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

AAAAAAAAA didn't see new thread in time. reposting here.
STEMfag amateur here looking for a hobby to help me stop drinking. First serious drawing in years since intro art class in college. Can't draw from imagination at all except for stick figures, so started with photo. Took about an hour. Tried to avoid chickenscratch. Also working my way through Loomis. Any general advice much appreciated.

Honestly people are going to hound you to read the sticky and devote hours upon hours to art. People will tell you to stop drawing faces and draw basic 3D objects, still lives, and simpler forms instead. They will tell you you're symbol drawing. I don't know if you have the time for the commitment because of STEM but be aware of those in the future. And since you're only doing this as a hobby it's okay to go at your own pace, albeit somewhat slow - just remember to have fun with it.

As for your drawing, read the sticky.

Isn't construction symbol drawing? Main difference being that beginners draw 2D symbols but construction uses 3D symbols.

Either way, they're drawing interpretations of what they see rather than just what they see. However, I'm not disputing that practicing observation skills improves the quality of the interpretations.

You don't need to learn anatomy to the same level as a chiropractor or some shit, just have a useful understanding of key muscle groups so you can replicate their appearance in drawing. Also don't doubt yourself, it takes time and the attitude you take towards this is important too.

Get to it!

This was my stuff at the beginning of summer. And I've been super lazy (drawing figures 2-3 hours once or twice a week), I'd actually consider my progress under average compared to people who are super motivated and draw hardcore.

Learn stuff little by little, I've had a much easier time focusing on specific areas. If all you do is learn proportions, your construction will look like shit, but then once you get to construction you won't have to worry about proportions, and so on. Your skill builds in layers, and that's why it's so daunting at first when you don't have anything.
>>
>>2639994
I'm trying to focus on learning how to Loomis heads right now.

I'm not sure if I should learn to loomis heads and then move onto loomising bodies like your image and then go back and do details after or just learn to draw really amazing heads straight away and not bother with bodies at all?

Hi. First time posting in this board. Please don't mind if I say anything stupid.

I have been thinking about starting painting for some months now, and the idea has not escaped my mind.

I'm genuinely interested in getting a canvas, lots of colours to choose from and different calibers of paint brush to use. And then just let my imagination flow.

I don't want to sound like a snowflake but its part of my philosophy to get it all by myself, no tutorials, books, just let it happen by my own skill and see if I can perfect it on my own.

So in terms of material, money, space, what do I need to know? What do I say when I walk into the store? Does paint stink? What kind of paint will I need? How many canvases is it good to buy at once (considering I live far away from the nearest art shop)? I need material advice in general.

Thanks.
>>
>>2639636
Are you retarded or did the joke go over my head?
>>
>>2640004
The differences between drawing heads and drawing bodies aren't that important on a fundamental level. I would say to work on both as you develop a better understanding of shape. Transferring 3d shapes onto a 2d canvas is the most important skill you'll need, learning the specific shapes which make up a head or a body is secondary.

If you really like to do one in particular there's nothing wrong with that, but make sure not to fall into symbol drawing traps (getting comfortable always drawing something from the same angle, instead of viewing it as a 3d object).
>>
>>2640009
why do you even have to ask?

Drawabox starts with a box which is extreme beginner.
>>
>>2640112
That will just confuse him, he should start with 1d objects, and progress through dimensions from there.

You can't grasp the relation of x to y, or y to z before mastering x, and that's not even getting into the x/z connection that so many artists get wrong because they skip a crucial stage in their training.
>>
>>2640136
Actually drawabox starts with lines, then planes before moving on to boxes. So it looks like he agrees with you.

You should ask him to cover the x/z relationship though, so many beginners neglect that, and it really is crucial.

Painting ain't sketching champ.

If you squint there are about 4 tones in that picture (practically)

Stick with the 4 tones. No blending, you're mind is not there yet.

Big shapes. Big brush. Erase if you go too big.
>>
>>2640009
Let's see, you need a round brush, flat brush, maybe a large bright brush.

Get some Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue and Cadmium Yellow Light and big tube of titanium white and small tube of ivory black.

Buy a can of turpentine.

Your first step is to drink that turpentine until your desire to post on this board stops.

>>
>>2639909
Sketch it out first before you start really working on it because then you'd see that you have the angle and most features are completely off. You kinda started painting without really having anything to paint, if that makes any sense. So start more simply next time and draw.what.you.see. You dove into values too early and sprained your ankle trying to run when you're just getting the hang of standing

>>2640009
Just do it, then. Canvas is pretty cheap where I'm from, but if you're far from an art store and you want to stock up, just get white board or even poster board. You don't have to use canvas to paint, especially to learn how to paint. Because I'ma tell you right now: your first paintings will probably really suck and it doesn't matter what you paint them on. What does matter is what you learned while painting.

really like the ambience created with the palette, in fact the pick of colours really match. You should add more details to the snow, mountains, clouds and so on. On the other hand, the composition says nothing new...is boring and kitsch. I ignore what u try to accomplish with this, but good luck. Polar or similar wallpapers do the job better.

Just some random Loomis heads and other exercises. I feel like I'm getting a bit better, especially with drawing with a pen.

>>
>>2640518
You want me to work in pure values? That sounds difficult. I suck at color picking between black and white.
>>
>>2640496
this is so symbol drawn that the only thing I can say is that you need loomis
>>
>>2640529
Be careful, the point of these exercises is to place multiple 3d volumes on a ball, what you're doing seems to be hardly considering volumes.

All of your 3/4 chins and jaws are asymmetrical (placed on one side of the ball only), and the features don't match with the center lines you drew in a few of the heads (head 2, 4 and 8 are some good examples of that, look where the line goes at the top of the cranium vs where the center of the hairline would be placed relative to the faces you drew)
>>
>>2640464
I like the gesture and anatomy, what's going on with the proportions? Torso is in general too long (your first torso is like four heads long when bottom of head to crotch should be 3 heads max), and your legs are too short (they should be half the body in length, and a bit longer if any of your poses - like 3 and 2 (?) have any foreshortening).

Your shoulders on 1 are fucked (which you probably know), look for connection points and try to envision your muscles (instead of showing compression it looks like your right deltoid is sliding over the guy's pec.) Also these arms would probably look better if they weren't so limply drawn (the right one is all tiny curves and could use a bigger gesture line, maybe in the forearm), and the left one is just two big curves with not enough definition.)

I love those sketches apart from those flaws, it's nice gesture and not a kind of style I see often on here.

they don't need loomis yet because Loomis won't help them stop symbol drawing. What will is simply drawing what they see. I'd recommend drawabox before Loomis to absolute beginners. Loomis should come after you can, yknow, make shapes
>>
>>2639624
>I've seen other noobs being recommended to do still lives and basic shapes for starters. Should I do that or keep going with Keys to Drawing?
Finish keys to drawing first, I guess?

Observational drawing is just general practice that's supposed to make you good at placement/proportions and sometimes perspective, you'll have to do it any case.

not bad, only minor gripe i have is the fairly consistent lineweight throughout the contour, lines facing light can be lighter and lines in shadow can be darker (lost/found). You are a strange guy
for some reason your understanding of form is above your line skill level, you are almost chicken scratching
Overall you are not a lost cause

I think people don't realize that you can advance a lot, and I mean A LOT in just one year. After a certain point it just becomes a grind with large diminishing returns and study of composition/design so that your work keeps looking interesting.

Like believe me, if you go on some traditional art classes or just go cover to cover for some books and work hard on it for a year you will jump straight from the level you are to what you should be. You are on the hatching stage where if you just take the time to take in fundamentals you will evolve, but after that it becomes diminishing returns.

>>2642170
Can you draw a circle, a straightline and a box?

No? Go do Drawabox exercises
>>
>>2641989
Yeah these are sadly not in order. My guess would be something like:

-Base color
-Patterns
-Subsurface scattering
-Bumps overlay
-Shadows
-Ambient light
-Rim light/specular

When using these techniques you wanna start with your base color, then build your light and shadow onto it. The artist here has divided the base colors into several layers (the skin patterns) to better organize the skin patterns, which honestly isn't a bad idea.

Read the thread OP before you post it in.

I feel like your realistic faces are badly in need of underlying construction. What you have is a decent head shape with some decent but unrelated features. I'm guessing this is because you're used to draw in a cartoony style.

Study the planes of the head. Sketch them for construction as much as you need, and as you commit them to memory and build up habit you'll gradually be able to "see" and freehand realistic facial features better.
>>
>>2642219
You didn't try to envision the muzzle as a three-dimensional shape. Try sketching it as a cylinder while paying close attention to the top and bottom planes (respectively your connection to the face, and plane the snout rests on) and your wolves' faces will stop looking fucked.

what about my wolf senpai?

Proportions look okay. Now draw it into interesting poses and spend less time worrying about fur outlines and more time worrying about muscles.
>>
>>2642242
Can i keep the muscles simple?
>>

There's no "too late to learn." That's a shitty excuse for not trying to learn and resigning yourself to bullshit. Make time every day to do something and learn from it. It's not about the total time you put into something, it's about what you've learned while doing it. So pick up shit fast and keep learning, don't make excuses for yourself and do it or don't.
>>
>>2641831
Also your work is pretty decent. If you have a story to tell, get to your webcomic and hop to it. Light a fire under your ass and tell us your story

Yeah I agree, totally didn't think 3 dimensional with the muzzle.

eh how am I doing

Missing the left side of the face. I know it's barely visible with that viewing angle, but you need to keep in mind that it's there. Hint at it by defining better some of the easy center planes of the head (fulcrum, middle of the chin) which you can see in your ref. And you're missing a little bit of volume from the left side on your lips and chin.

I took woodshop in highschool and learned some basic 2D drafting. Now, I started Drawabox a few days ago and the freehand boxes are kicking my ass. I underestimated simple shapes and pen control.

ballpoint pen

pretty much at the beginning of drawing comics , i learn best by doing.

currently trying out different compositions for pages, this is one of my later tries.

my phone camera is shit and cant resize anything on it
>>
>>2642225
thank you for the advice anon! i'll get to that
>>
How far should I go with Drawabox lessons before going onto the things in the sticky and drawing from references?
>>
>>2642333
do every drawabox lesson

then when you're done redo it 40-50 times

only then you can grace the sticky
>>
>>2642333
I'm doing it now too and man is it frustrating and hard. I'm gonna go with the whole thing, but I'm also curious as to what people here think.
>>
>>2642329
refine lines

do you trace in pencil beforehand?
>>
>>2641939
I'd say bone up on the eyesockets, the eyeballs are just little spheres inside them with eyelids stretched over them
>>
>>2639346
I'm also STEM who also did some basic drafting in highschool. Even the basic lessons from drawabox that I recently started are kicking my ass. However, I'm noticing some improvement in hand control.
They are dry, structured, and tedious exercises. If you want a hobby mainly for fun then focus on having fun first. If you want a hobby to use up your time while honing a skill then these might be for you.

Draw-a-box is a good set of exercises on drawing boxes, rounded boxes, groups of boxes that look like things and humans even but it doesn't teach you shit

Sticky contains important theory, but starter-tier theory is actually relatively easy and what draw-a-box asks you to practice is not. You should be good at both to draw from imagination.

Drawing from references/real life is another type of exercises, ideally something you should be doing every day, it teaches you to get angles and proportions right since you have a real life as a "master copy"

In which order is up to you, although it's probably important to read on how to draw from real life if you suffer from symbolic drawing
>>
Could I post my draw a box 'homework' here for people to mark do u think?
>>
>>2642381
I'd like to know this too. Wouldn't mind doing this myself.
>>
>>2642363
this one was ballpoint pen only.

i am trying to train my sense for composition before trying to draw something seriously thou, so i dont give much effort into clean drawings right now, it wont be worth the time at the moment

He's right you know.
Your lines are horrible, and your drawing feels flat. You need to go check out draw-a-box.

I like marking people's work. Helps me reflect on my own. So, sure go ahead I say
