Started few small paintings again, need to try different approaches because I changed paints. I managed to score some Nevskaya Palitra Master Class paints, they act totally different from what I've been using, so it might take a few takes. Also pushing a bit to do two paintings a day, moved to countryside for few months. Nothing else to do than paint and discover local areas.

Uuugg I dont' know why I find it so difficult to come up with a composition, I always find something I don't like or feel like it could be better. It's frustrating. Like i spent all day on these and I don't know how I feel about them.

Which one do you chaps think works best? The synopsis is that there is a big gangly-looking guardian protecting the secrets of this giant maze, the little knight is challenging him to gain access. What I really want to show in this picture is that the guardian is old and haggard, like he's forced to be there, and in the two pictures on the left it's as though he was sitting down when this little knight appeared and he sighs as he stands up to fight. But I don't think the composition is as good as the two on the right, but then again those comps look too stiff imo.
>>
>>2633261
instead of grinding a single scene until you magically get it right, put some active thought into it

you literally have presumed perspective lines in the form of road markings and you still fuck up the perspective on the cars placed right next to them by being random instead of adhering to the guides you have in place

it's like you're redlining your own shitty drawing

Thank you for the critique anon. I drew her again since I feel like that last one was way off base from the look I want to go for. As you pointed out her legs were way too long, even for a stylized look and I wasn't aiming for that either. I hope her proportions are better in this one.
>>
>>2633266
Actually, nevermind.
I'm just going to go study/reverse engineer Proko videos until I understand 100% what he's looking for in a figure.
>>
>>2633271
thats why im practicing. I dont draw scenery and dont have a strong grasp on things like perspective. if you could redline the mistake for me id appreciate it.
>>
>>2633275
They are all fundamentally bad, your approach is completely wrong.

>>2633290
>Proko
Don't. Proko has a very, very good grasp on fundamentals, including gesture, but he's a shit teacher.

If you want to continue with the tube-like approach to gesture, study Steve Huston and Danny Galieote. Steve will teach you critical gestures/rhythms and the general mindset, and once you've got that, gesture is a cakewalk. Do not watch Danny first.

Vilppu and Borenstein approach gesture a bit differently, but the gist of it is the same.

Starting with a shammy physically is far easier than with pencil line or digitally.

Why is Proko is a shit teacher?
>>
>>2633327
I'm not
>>2633312
but I am the beginner guy that's trying to learn from Proko.
His videos don't go into any sort of depth in comparison to a book or a Vilppu video (which I tragically deleted a year ago when I decided I'm looking too far ahead)

I barely understand what I'm looking for when it comes to gesture despite watching his videos over and over. I've started to learn more about it from his drawings than from his mouth, and for me personally that's a very bad sign.

I've had suspicions that he's a bad teacher in the sense that his videos leave out loads of information that are vital to gesture. I randomly picked his videos because anons on here keep bringing up his name.

I'm going to try the gesture masters that
>>2633312
has brought up.

I might be totally wrong about everything I'm writing, but I don't think of myself as a bad student.

When I watch Proko, it feels like he's skimming through very important information. (Flow of the body through rhythm, etc)

Proko's a great teacher and he has beautifully clean, easy to understand drawings. His use of 3D models really helps, too. His only real problem is that he's a metrosexual goofball with a 4/10 mustard monkey wife.

Proko is a great teacher, you are a fag.

I've watched tons of other teachers too, including Vlippu. Prokos videos are designed to be watched over and over again until you digest it, in short periods of time.

For Vlippu's you have to do the same thing but it's fucking 10 hours each time as he drones on.

Pretty much exactly what you said. It's not that he's fundamentally a bad teacher, but he's still new and inexperienced at it, and his gesture videos are among his first, to boot.

Steve and Vilppu, on the other hand, have been teaching for many, many years.

Anyway, my advice is to start with Steve, learn the basic rhythms, then check Vilppu, Borenstein, and Danny.

It might seem different at first, but Vilppu's lines follow the exact same principles as Steve's tubes, you'll understand when you see it.

Just don't binge the lessons. Get the rhythms, then work on that before proceeding. And start with Steve's NMA videos, not the 15 year old lectures on youtube.

And again, I found it much easier to understand what I was supposed to do with a shammy, though you can use a suitable wide brush if you must practice digitally.

Perspective of the floor is a bit whack plus the overall detail level of the bricks isnt helping the rest of your design any. The focal point should be the center piece but it blends too much with the background and busy floor. Also the light/furnace/mirror thing is distracting and not polished enough to need that much attention. Add some light to the middle piece and pop it out. Also, rooms arent very interesting if they are all on the same plane. Try to add an area of elevation like a small step or two difference in the center of the room. It will also bring the focus inward and help you out with selling your main moon globe design. Furnace mirrors lack any sort of complexity at the bottom. They need some sort of base or pedestal so they dont look so flat. And if you really want to kick this piece to the next level add some cooler pottery in the background. I see you have some sick hookah style patterns on the back wall, maybe bring some of those into your scene. It may add some more design and life into your scene.

Pretty cool stuff man. Sorry for the wall of text. Keep at it and it could be a nice portfolio piece if you added a few more pages of similar style rooms.

Vilppu is too old fashioned. He tries to explain intricate muscle groupings to the viewer using a live model in a dimly lit studio from a football field's length from the camera with his sadly weakening voice. Huston's head construction technique would be a better fit for drawing Protoss Templars® than humans. Danny G is irrelevant.

Once again Proko, metrosexual goofball with a 4/10 mustard monkey wife though he is, is the future. Clean af drawings, articulate explanations, and strategic use of 3D models make him easily one of the best teachers on the internet at this moment. If he toned down the schtick he'd be perfect.

With all that said, Huston is easily the best actual artist of the 3 in my honest opinion.
>>
>>2633452
I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing. What do intricate muscle groupings and 3d models have to do with gesture?

To elaborate on what I mean by that; Vilppu is great at what he does but I don't think I've seen more than a handful of completed works by him and they were basically sketches. I don't know if he even has any completed paintings that are able to be viewed, though he's mentioned being a painter before. He is as far as I'm aware an art instructor and sketch artist first and foremost. Proko's paintings are the kind of gentle-hearted simple faire you'd expect from a thrift store + some Watts influence. Not particularly bad, but nothing too special either.

Huston's paintings on the other hand are fuckin' rad.
>>
>>2633465
I'm sorry, but I'm afraid you might be retarded.

Vilppu and Galieote are draftsmen. Both have decades of experience as professional animators. Both are miles ahead of Prokopenko in terms of gesture precisely because that's their fucking job.
The fact that Vilppu draws "basically sketches" 24/7 is good thing, you idiot.

>Both are miles ahead of Prokopenko in terms of gesture precisely because that's their fucking job.

Both Danny and Vilppu's gesture drawing results are ultimately better than Proko's, but Vilppu's explanation for how gestures work literally amounts to "feel the pose, faggot". Which is endearing and all but leaves a lot to the imagination. You're not necessarily limited to one or the other, but Proko is the most thorough in his explanation of what is a fairly esoteric concept.

Symmetrical compositions are hard to make look dynamic. Right now it doesn't have a very strong impact. The sense of scale also seems off in a way. If it were me I would add some forced perspective. Have the girl in the extreme foreground and show the ravine stretching out impossibly far before her. Personally I would also make this a vertical orientation instead of landscape. Pinching the sides in around the girl would help add tension.

Not him, but though I like the other drawings, with the top right guy you clearly guessed all the muscles.
You even invented some muscles yourself - a second pair of lats and a completely new muscle where obliques should insert. Not to mention wrong overlaps, shapes and forms.

Unless you want to spend your life pandering to normies who can't tell the difference, I'd suggest to learn the actual muscles and not just their surface forms.

Seriously though, anybody has a guide on how to apply paint for n00bs?

>>
>>2634076
Well, it was kinda tricky cause a lot of his muscles right at the lats were hidden by the lighting, and I wanted to factually draw them. So yeah, i kinda guessed.

I'll be doing more of these though, a good... iunno, two pages per month?

Imma start doing environments in just line art too, I notice it's what helps me improve the most alongside grinding studies, but in many ways, this actually seems to help me a lot more than just book work and exercises. Combining fully detailed works with the usual grinds I mean. I'm also more proud of showing these off than the 15 mins ones since, I put extra work into making these look nice.

Get good at observational drawing and feeling of form. Have more fun at beginning. Eventually quit art later on 'cause your learning curve decreases gradually.
>study the craft in depth, read books, watch lectures, do exercises, learn construction
Less fun/frustrating at first, but a rapid growth causes you to fall in love with the process + gives you freedom of actually understanding the craft.

Make your choice. Also, you can probably guess which did 90% of the old masters go with.

I do study anatomy, I did art school for 2 years, and I know how the serrates connect with the lats. I know it's like teeth coming together, however, when I did it like that, it didn't look as visually appealing, and since the ref I was using didn't visually communicate that, I just winged it with what I thought looked nicer, but you're correct.

I'm doing more anatomy learning on my own, because desu, what I did in art school wasn't enough. Atm I'm focusing more on perspective with Scott Rob's books and videos and stuff, while doing some anatomy stuff on the side to keep it going, but once I finish that imma jump all in with Anatomy to really nail it.

But yeah, we did Miology, and musular forms, and how to construct muscle groups back in art school, it just wasn't enough, and with the foundation I do have, I know I can get a lot further if I really focus on it. I've made much more progress with perspective already for example.

>>2634231
I jump back and forth between the two. When I have a burst of immagination, I binge doing creative works for a couple weeks, and once that fuel starts to run out, I bounce back to the hard core studies and exercises and grinds. Till the ideas come back again, and I jump back to those. However, I always make sure to have some exercises and stuff going while I'm binging creative works. I've learned that the best way to learn for me, isn't to just focus on one thing or one piece and getting it done, but rather, working on multiple things at the same time and bouncing between them. It leads to many less burnouts, and keeps you going.

I think I'm certainly approaching that point where my foundation is good enough that I can express myself more freely and truly just have a lot more fun doing some really cool stuff.

Not quite there yet, but I feel I can really just taste it now. I figure that at the pace I'm going, I'll be there in a good 6 more months.

I'm not an artist, but I am a viewer. I think you either need to darken the rocks, or darken the color of the girl.

That deep shade of blue is practically another dark green.

There's no variation aside from the color, and on top of this my eye is no immediately drawn to the girl. That lone color doesn't feel like enough.

You might want to consider your framing/the rule of thirds more if you haven't already.

My eye feels more drawn to the distance (leading lines towards the VP in the fissure on the ground) than to the foreground.

Just fuck my shit up senpai. I've spent too long fiddling with this and I need someone to tear me up so I can fix what I can't see. My biggest problem is that I often spend too much time looking at the picture or getting sidetracked, postponing important things like fleshing out the female's design. Hours can go by and I only paint a few strokes and make a few adjustments.

I'm guessing this is what happens when I try to practice and paint at the same time.

Also before you say anything I have the girls face on a separate layer and it is much cleaner. Those shadows were a quick and shitty attempt to try and make the lighting click for me.

Nice to see someone else working on environments in this thread.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by technique, but I can give you a few pointers.

-Composition. There's too much stuff going on with all of these pictures. While fitting a lot in a single shot can be good for production paintings (it allows you to show off several things at once), you're still bound by the basic rules of composition. I'm gonna expand on this with several sub-points because I see a lot of stuff you're doing wrong:

-Focal point: all three of your pictures have two conflicting focal points of equal interest (it's always two light sources). Ideally, you want to turn one down and make it softer ambient light, so you can keep only one as a strong light source (primary or close to it). Put your money (the details, the cool characters and concepts) close to that point of interest. Keep the rest subtle.

-Use detail selectively. You've got several unnecessarily detailed elements that serve only to distract from the piece. The best example I can give is in the third painting - while the guy with his spaceship should be the focal point of the piece, you've got a big guy in the foreground taking away attention, and this guy is pretty well lit too. In fact, a lot of your figures share the same amount of detail and focus, even though they're spread out over the entire paintings, which is going to make them look like bad photoshop collages.

-Saturation: The colors you've laid down are interesting and provide a good foundation to paint on (esp. for production paintings), but they're too saturated all over. This isn't a problem where your focal points would be, but I'd use saturation more sparingly on "background" elements (the less important ones like these pink flowers). You can still make them look interesting by working in mid-values and mid-saturations, and only pushing your colors to the extremes for a few highlights.

(cont. with the rest of the points)
>>
>>2635194
>>2635195
>>2635199
The brushwork on the figures is far too fine to fit in with the broad implied detail of the environments.

One of your many, many problems.
>>
cont. of >>2635221

-Your brushwork is decent, though you may want to look out for edge control. You've got problems with everything being either hard-edged (first pic) or soft-edged (second and third pic from all the low-contrast blending). Something I find helps separate edges is to work with selection masks and a feather and hard brush only to start a painting.

-You're missing the storytelling aspect of production paintings. You have a lot of characters but it's not very clear who they are or what they're doing - most of them seem to be chilling there without any purpose. The second painting has four different characters with none of them sharing any kind of coherent theme - you've got a mysterious green pimp with a cane, a space marine, some sort of insect creature and a tron dwarf. What exactly are they all doing in this forest? Same for the guys with the spaceship in painting #3. Foreground guy is stuck in a super generic pose. Is he a scout? Looking out for enemies? Crashed, and searching for supplies? Try to think about the logic behind your characters, don't just design and pose them to look cool.

-Design language: I don't really see any clear design intent behind those paintings, and that's something we should be able to sense, even if they're roughs. The first painting looks like some sort of western town, but the design is all over the place. You've got a big, blocky building in the middle with some stylized details that look more cartoony than realistic, then some arches that look middle-eastern or byzantine at the left, and some buildings at the right that look like they belong on Tatooine. To top that off, you've got these intricate, wrought iron lampposts with lots of curves when everything else in your picture is blocky. There's also an entirely mechanical robot, being contrasted by an alien camel which doesn't have anything mechanical and seems to be dressed in silk and other fabrics.

(cont.)
>>
cont. of >>2635244 (whew, that ended up being a long one)

My parting advice would be that you need to think more about what you're putting into these paintings, both before and as you do them. Plan out places, characters, situations, aesthetics. Plan out shapes in advance - if you're going to draw a town, don't just think that you need buildings and people and streetlights and clutter. Plan out a specific architecture. Make it cohesive. Put hard edges with hard edges, soft curves with other soft curves. Put the fancy with the fancy, and the run-down with the run-down. This is always gonna be true no matter what you're painting, whether it be scifi, fantasy, historical scenes, or even something completely cartoony and out there.

I get that it isn't what you asked for and doesn't entirely relate to technique (well, some of it does), but design is equally important and at least 50% responsible for what makes it so people find your pictures cool or not.

Boobs feel tacked on, they're rendered nicely but are the only thing receiving highlights while I'd expect the forms around them to get a bit more light too. Both the sections above and below the boobs look completely flat - have you planned your muscles for the torso?

That's some detailed and useful feedback. I realised I often clutter up the composition with my process of randomly throwing shapes down and not doing much planning but it works for me since I can keep going once I get enough momentum. I like comments about saturation and focal points too. I got the values down ok but hue/saturation still needs work.

I only started taking environments seriously lately, I'll definitely think about your advice some more. Thanks anon, I appreciate it.

Keep at it! It's challenging to become good at, but an integral part of being a good artist imo (and a pro if that's what you want to be). A lot of internet artists draw only figures and limit themselves by doing so.
>>
>>2633268

>>2635864
Global composition is good, but local values are all over the place. There's too much pure white - it should be limited to primary light sources (these little dots indicating neons in the background) and rim lighting on the character. This looks finished, but if you plan to revisit the painting you should tone down some of the white on reflections (tables and poles) as well as on these tv screens. Don't make the bg fog white either, crunching down your values towards the midtones will help show distance and separate the character a bit more.

Another place where you could remove some pure white is on the neon curtains - they almost create a second focal point that 1. takes away from the main character and 2. breaks the line of sight between the fg character and the main character.

The rest of the painting is good! The composition, although it's made of a few simple elements, ends up looking quite dynamic. Your light sources also do a good job of covering the whole picture with the right amount of direct light, backlight, and ambient light. Maybe one thing I dislike is the lack of consistency within your textures. Some of the stuff (like the background and main char) is painted with heavy contrast and lots of dark-black outlines, making it look more cartoony or like edited photos, while some of the stuff (the other two guys, the foreground walls with the curtains) is painted with realistic values and no outlines.

The face up top is really weak compared to the rest of the painting whic is stellar. The rim lighting shouldnt be on both the bottom and top lip, and the value range is overall really too low.

Again the rest of it is fucking great man. It would be a shame not to see you finish strong.

I think you need to separate the light family and shadow family clearly. i.e. the lightest dark is never lighter than the darkest light. Look at the cast shadow at the neck. That value is pretty much your midtone on the face. Likewise her right hand (our left) has incorrect values, relative to the face.

You do this too often, i almost feel guilty not saying it earlier. A remedial method is to establish the range of values that your pencil/medium can achieve (by drawing something similar to a value scale) and split it in two, respective to light/shadow family. For each life drawing you do, you need to establish where you split the scale. For example, if your focus on the subject is mostly in light, you want the light family to be larger than the shadow family, so you split it in favour of light. If your focus on the subject is in shadow, do the opposite. Youre trying to define too many things in both the shadow and light, and you end up extending the shadow family into the light and vice versa

You can also use the value scale to determine, beforehand the value ranges of different objects/materials. Try to distinguish your props with different value ranges; the pillow, dress, white cloth, skin, hair, chair. You can then split those ranges to their light/shadow families. This whole value thing plays a big part in compositions, arrangements and design which is a sort of separate thing from drawing itself. Ill say thats a good drawing, but poorly designed
>>
>>2636773
you are totally right. i will make that scale next time on the same page as my drawing.

thanks for such a spot on critique. i feel like this little insight into organization is going to help take my drawing to the next level.

HELP /ic/, I'm frustrated and in trouble. I hope it's okay if I ask here, if not feel free to call me a faggot.

What steps do you take to make a finished painting at a steady, effective pace? I had a great flow of thumbnailing and I already know what to do, but after I've literally been the last 3 weeks making almost no progress whatsoever, I'm absolutely stuck. I have some kind of lineart, some kind of grayscale, and I have no idea how to move on. I trust my skills, that's one thing I'm proud of. But something is wrong with this.

The worst part of all is that it's a fucking commission, a big important one. I NEED to keep going.
>>
>>2637618
that's kind of crazy.
what are you expecting? a magic formula?
maybe you should hang motivational poster in your room?
>I trust my skills
what do you even mean?

start making sense. how could anyone help you with what you have written?
>>
>>2637618
>finalize the lineart
>send to client for possible revisions
>make adjustments accordingly
>greyscale underpainting if you need/want it
>choose color scheme
>paint it, sending updates to client as needed
>>
>>2637622
I now realize I didn't make fucking sense with my post. What I tried to say, I think, is, there's a problem with my workflow and I wanted to know what were your steps to not be all over the place when working from a thumbnail to a finished painting. It might give me an idea of where to go next. Not a magic formula, just some direction from looking at other people's steps, am I asking too much maybe? Sorry.
>>
>>2637628

Anyone use it?

>>
>>2638859
not sure about the general consensus but I like it.
As long as it isn't your primary digital drawing software it's nice to have. Linework is really good and the unlimited scroll feature allows for some interesting things. It is, however, abysmal for color and has a limited toolset. If you spend a lot of time sketching, doing linework, or cartoons of some sort... would recommend. Otherwise, it's best to avoid entirely.

It doesn't read well
I would make the shadow way shorter until it get in the floor(maybe make the canvas longer) and let the machine get some light. That way I could see his fat shadow better and the machine would get more importance. Then maybe you could make the door shadow shorter too. Also that hand looks weird and it shouldn't cover the machine soo much
Aside from that, the rendering is going really well.
I'm sorry if it's too late for that kind of changes, and I would understand if you don't want to change it, but at least define that shadow a lot,
