Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at:

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Can I get some fixs, I'm not very good at foreshortening and weak with anatomy.
>>
>>2622812
Yeah the lower body is definitely too stretched out in your drawing. This is partially bc the slope of the butt going up should be a lot more vertical. If you just squeeze the upper and lower body closer together it would look a lot better
>>
>>2622842
If you're weak with anatomy you shouldn't be drawing stylized people yet, especially from imagination

Her face looks wonky, you should be seeing less of her lower butt if she's turning around like that, and her arms don't connect to either hand. Also your rough linework on small details ruins a lot of the effect.

tried a bit more on the shinkawa style, the shadows are killing me, this is not from ref though

I'm getting a bit confused with using references for stytlized inking, as shinkawa stylizes his figures, especially with cheekbones and jawlines, and yet makes the shadows seem realistic. Whenever, I attempt, it looks like overemphasized doodles on the cheeks. How exactly does he do it?

The proportions are not terrible but the value is a mess. nothing is defined, you have no dark/light areas its all middle ground and muddy.
>>
>>2623148
You need to have total understanding of what you're drawing (in this instance, cheeks/jaws) in order to bend them to make them appealing. AKA study more. (This is also the answer to every question on /ic/.)

>>2623161
Have a good balance of both.

After dropping art for months I finally tried my first attempt at digital, lewd and from imagination drawing.

It was better than expected but something feels awfully wrong, gonna start the grind on Loomis tomorrow and more practice, but this is what I've got so far.

Can anyone help me (preferiably with references) in understanding what's wrong with the drawing? the arm, neck and overall upper chest were a pain to finish and I think it's pretty noticiable they don't look good.

Also can anyone recommend the best way to get better at linework? Right now that's pretty much the bane of my existence.

Yes, yes I know I should've started with loomis first but I just wanted to push myself to draw something.

>>
>>2623348
that's called "color banding", it's a problem with the color settings in photoshop.
make sure your photoshop project is set to at least 16-bit color. by default it's usually 8-bit.

Different guy but
Looootsa things: the anatomy is crap, the shading (is that shading?) is really not good (don't shade every joint and the beginnings of every chunk of soft flesh), animu face, giraffe neck, no understanding of musculature etc. Get Loomy

>>2623340
Better than the last one
Mind the head, it looks like a watermelon; the skull isn't so elongated at the back where the bun thing is
The hands are living autism I'm sure you're aware of that
A more complex matter is leg placement: e.g. the right leg is twisted forwards at the thigh in line with her body, but then the knee swivels around really unnaturally and the foot is facing mad away from where it should be, as if she were standing with her foot rotated 60 degrees outwards
What the hell is that coupling at the boob?
Symbol drawing on the face, definitely, but I've seen worse.
The torso and ribcage seem a bit thick but her right arm feels tacked on
Bootleg some Hampton to see what elements a gesture has, it'll help you out a lot
>>
>>2623283
You don't even have a grasp on perspective. Learn how to draw a box and its top surface: that table looks epileptic.
Further than that, anatomy studies really. The body isn't in line with the surface it's on, partly because of the perspective bork, which makes it feel as if she was floating above the table at an angle
>>
Is tempera bad for a painting?
what about acrylic and oil paint?

I have that problem with tempera, that the colours lacks life, acrylic seems to bring more vivid colours, and oil seems to be the top , like if you're proffessional, you can use oil.
What do you guys think?
>>
>>2623464
Tempera is poor man's gouache basically: you learn how to work with liquid media using cheap watercolour and tempera, and then move on to better watercolour, gouache, acrylic and oil based on which medium you like best, or even some or all

>>
>>2623490
npnp; I could see you were trying to adapt to a tablet (that bump on the back is waay too out there but it looks like you were playing with pressure sensitivity)
Honestly it's just mileage from here, do more of it and don't stop and you'll get the hang of it as your brain adapts to your hand not being on the image: it's kinda like playing a FPS with a joystick, it's obtuse at first but it grows on you until you're confident with it

>>
>>2623500
I want to achieve some sort of realism and expression mix. and varying between the two. Sometimes just simply going for realism, and sometimes mix my feelings or mood,or an idea in it.
I'm quite a fresh painter, so first I'll go for realism, and hone my skills, after that I'll want to move towards expressionism slowly.

Main theme I will want to use is depression, melancholy, I'll want to mix these into the colours of the painting, or even the shapes, so if you look at it you suddenly feel it. I want this effect to be fast ,strong, and vivid.

And of course I plan to try out impressionism, tho I dont have much of a touch on that.

I dont want to paint landscapes all the time ,but now thats what I feel basic stone, for a beginning

face is also long, don't know why you shade it like that if you're aiming for plain anime style, looks weird, like a creepy mask

hair looks really weird

The boxy takes an entirely different shape when someones is lying on their side.
Shoulders and hips will shift, without support the neck will either relax downward or the person must support it. It is far too rigid for someone lying down. Leg gap would disappear as the upper leg falls over the lower leg.
There is a lot to work on to make them look like they are lying on their side.

>>
>>2623476
This doesn't look too bad, to add more value to the body shape, you should add softer black/blue hues. Realistically, the body's shadows is not too brown. The back should be more arched, it looks like you instead drew the ribcage lower than it should be. Put the eye line a little lower (Eyes are to be right in the middle of the face, while scalp line covers part of the forehead).

The upper arm perspective is off when she tries to reach down her back. Either giver her a redefined elbow or show the back of the bent arm. Her eyes have no sense of direction. It looks like she was beaten in the face drunk. Her eyebrows are uneven (one higher than the other, which can be feasible but nor for this particular expression.)

I do like the back though, you have good spine curvature and your ribcage is of great proportion.

The line extending from her breast should be erased a little, it is a little too high for the other arm. Or you can just shade the back arm darker for perspective.

Both of you, did you start off with guidelines for the face? Start with guidelines, so that the placement of the features will be correct in the final piece.
Both have also used too harsh a line throughout the portrait. Start of softer, and then continue to add depth.

Both have also not considered the presence and depths of tone. Particularly the tit pic. Layers of dark and light and shades in between, not just a stark contrast of dark patches

You're focusing on anatomy without knowing anything about anatomy. I feel you're drawing details to cover up you fundamental mistakes which won't work.

For now I would say don't worry about anatomy, all you need is basic proportions but what you need more is constructions and gestures. Only look on getting the big forms right and don't bother with the little details.

Literally start from square one, at least with anatomy. Perspective is bad too. Looks like you're interested in naked women; may I suggest a more inviting pose? Contrapposto is about a million more times appealing than just standing there.

See the image; Praxiteles' Aphrodite of Knidos from the late third century BCE (correct me if I'm wrong someone, learned it in highschool). Her pose conveys the artist's knowledge of anatomy, the sensuality of the goddess (fertility) and has a line of action. It was said that it was 'so lifelike that men stained her with their lust' or some crap, I don't remember exactly. I'd wank to aphrodite, but not to yours. Something to consider.

>>2624479
I see you're trying to leave out details, but you still merely describe the contours with short CSI strokes.
Gesture is about the energy flowing through the body in a rhytm. Look at pic related (Hampton) and see how he uses line to literally lead the eye through the body depending on how the force is distributed.

I don't see any application of Loomis in that picture in the first place. Drawing a sloppy t shaped construction line on the face isn't exactly applying what you're reading, anonymous.

What exactly do you mean "parts added" anyway? You're not at a point where you should be streamlining your process to be as fast as you can make it, you should be taking your time and doing it right. Speed will come with practice and knowledge, not rushing your art.

You're just making the heads flat.

You have to keep in mind the realistic measurements of the head by learning how to measure the face appropriately.

Go read Keys to Drawing and pay attention how to measure faces.

Drawing on the Left side of the meme also has a specific chapter on why people draw flat heads and how to stop it. There are some useful things in that book despite people here not admitting it.

i think you need to work on details and midtones, i would suggest switching to charcoal for both unless you can make pastels work.

for details i would get some sharpened charcoal pencils and kneaded erasers so you can draw and erase with finer edges. You could also try increasing the size of your paper.

for midtones, being able to add and remove the material is very good for learning. I made pic related messing around with vine charcoal and eraser, you can see the darker pencil charcoal as well.

Don't really agree with the bad critiques you got for this one, I think they are good for 1min poses, even for 2 or 3 minutes. Contours are no crime as long as it's clear what the action is and the figures don't look stiff. I think you did a good job on them and are on the right path. I like that the bodyparts have volume to them and the arms and legs seem properly attached to the body. There are definitely lines and shapes that can be more simplified with longer strokes, but you are way beyond the level of just contour drawing.

What I don't like are the necks and how the head is attached to them. The neck should be a continuation of the flowing line of the body and it ends a lot higher on the back of the head than you are indicating. Just watch some video on it and you will pick it up in no time.

I'd recommend you some really good books on drapery, but they're realistic, so it wouldn't be of any help to you.

So I'm following the Dynamic Sketching with Peter Han vids (currently on week two) and the book Pen and Ink: A Simple Guide by Alphonse Dunn, so here's an egg shading exercise I did today. Hopefully I'm on the right track. Done with 01 Micron.

When doing the front view loomis method, I can't even chop off the sides of the circle correctly. One side is always lopsided, or both, if the circle is even rhe same height/width.

Same goes for my jawline, I can never do a symmetrical looking curve (i know faces arent perfectly symmetrical, but my jaws always look super cockeyed like they got hit with a shovel or something. Isn't there a way I can avoid making these mistakes?

Practicing over and over is useless if you keep making the same fuckups.
>>
>>2625661
draw from reference a million jaws without using the loomis method, just measure using a small unit of measure (ie: left eye) and compare everything else to that, use vertical and horizontal lines to guide yourself

get a mirror and keep trying until you get your face right
>>
Hey guys. Lurked for a while, but never really shared my work before. But I really want to start getting good now. From now on, gonna keep posting here every day until I make it. Here's some figure studies I did from photographs, I know they're shit I need you to tell me why. I need to get good guys, help me out here. Tear me to fucking shreds.

draw bigger
>>
Everyone says to hold the pencil overhand when drawing. But how the hell do you do that with a sketchbook? Seems like it'll be a major hassle when you have to hold the page. And laying it flat on a desk makes it extremely difficult as well.
>>
>>2625685
I've heard that before and I definitely will. Around how large would you say? Also, does drawing bigger require a change of medium? Like charcoal for example?
>>
>>2625687

>>
>>2625704
he's saying he doesn't find how it would be a struggle to keep a sketchbook page still
>>
>>2625705

What i meant was, how am I supposed to draw with my "elbow" locked and all that jazz.

Maybe I'm just overthinking it. I'm frustrated because this loomis bullshit isn't working for me, maybe im drawing the heads too small to work with, but even if I can manage to construct the head form, the features don't get me anywhere. And I don't even know if I am doing the jaw correctly either. Idk if my 3D form of the boxy shape is off, or if it's right, or what. Right now I am just basically drawing on a notepad sort of deal.
>>
>>2625710

A lot of them are screw ups, but meh
>>
>>2625713

and what I mean was, a lot of the jaws keep looking like the heads pointed down, as opposed to being at a normal position

Say I'm a beginner practicing a face from ref.
The likeness is not to a level where you could recognize the person if you knew them.

Should I keep reworking it, getting the likeness right/start new heads from scratch going for a good sketch only; or should I be less autistic for now and divide my time for greyscale values / planes etc?
>>
>>2625781
post your work. how good are your portraits? do they look like passable people or do they look like arya stark in terms of porptions. the key to capturing likeness is details. if some thing has two human eyes, a human nose, etc you know its a human face. WHOSE human face it is is determined by things like

how far apart the eyes are
upper lip area
distant from tear duct to point of nose (height of nose basically)
width of nose
shape of nostrils
shape of lips (wide, thin, thick, narrow)
angle of jawline
size of forehead
distance between eyebrows whether altered or not
space between brow and eyelids
etc

you could go on forever listing all the little details that makes a face a specific face. if i were you id try to start measuring for a while just so youre doing it all science and shit. you can get pretty accurate with that. after a while you should be able to start getting accurate just using basic construction and adjusting based of your knowledge, observation skills, ability to self critique

>draw a still life picture to get better at drawing bodies

I feel like art of an erotic nature get slammed here just for the sake of discouraging porn artists. I don't want to draw flowers, I want to draw seductive naked women.
>>
>>2625808
stop worry about rendering and work on drawing. thats an improvment but youre still way fucking off from the ref
>>
>>2625814
>I feel like people should learn by doing things way over their skill level, failing constantly, and then giving up.
Not even that guy you're quoting but that artist has a lot to learn before trying to draw bodies seductively.
>>
>>2625814
yeah and you learn a lot about drawing seductive naked women by drawing other things, duh. Besides, the fact that your end goal is naked women in the first place just tells me you're probably not very smart or ambitious. Get some taste and draw from life, stop thinking with your dick, jesus christ
>>
Any. Good videos on measuring life drawing ?
>>
>>2625841
You're the kind of person who hurls uncalled for insults at strangers on the internet. I think that's a fair bit more telling about intelligence and ambition than wanting to draw naked women.
>>
>>2625859
No, its probably because your art is shit and I'm just being honest. what you drew is genuinely distasteful, learn to accept critique and follow advice.

>>

not really, critique is critique. Point is, the beginner needs to stop drawing with his dick and start studying from life, do you disagree? If so, you're probably the cancer.

>>2625878
>one can't draw and the other can't crit so they just end up throwing shit at each other

You can't draw a clean line, why bother with something as complex as form/perspective/life drawing? Draw loads of parallels, grids, circles and use your shoulder. Then some basic perspective theory, boxes etc etc, it's all in the sticky.
And when giving/receiving a critique, discuss the critique only, not the person behind it for fuck's sake.

no, it doesnt matter how shit you are, drawing from life will enable you to understand forms as they actually are, not how you perceive them in your flawed memory.

And my bad for assuming that anyone in /ic/ could want to draw something completely detached from their sexuality, most of you seem incapable of that

Ok, I need some critique. Ignore the arms and legs, I haven't really studied them much yet. I've been trying to get my torso's to look right. Also, do these look good enough for me to start practising drapery or should I get my nude figures to look better before learning drapery?

A bit of a Dunning-Kruger, aren't ya? For beginners a still life might be good only as a study for copying values, not understanding form. Unless pic related is what you're going for, you need to understand form >before< you do a still life - a flower vase is just a cyllinder in perspective, a chair is a box etc.
It's simple→complex, not the other way around.

>>2625917
Nope, not yet. Take a step back and improve your line quality, then learn basic shapes of construction, then a skeleton with correct proportions. Follow Proko's figure drawing series and forget about drapery, it's not much different from drawing a saggy skin - it'll come naturally as you develop your sense of weight and form. When that time comes, I recommend this link
>http://www.penciljack.com/forum/showthread.php?42912-Clothing-Folds-Wrinkles-and-Drapery-Reference
>>
>>2625925
thanks for the advice, but can you recommend something that I can use instead of Proko? I've already seen enough of his videos to know that something else would work better for me. I just find myself copying his videos and failing to learn anything.
>>
>>2625713

am I doing loomis all wrong?

I'm following w/ proko, i feel like im not getting anywhere. Even if I manage to construct the head without a fucked up jaw/front view. Placing the features is extremely difficult. I just use a regular pencil right now. Not even worrying about the shading.

But for whatever reason, placing the features always turns out like shit. And it's beginning to frustrate me.
>>
>>2625925
it doesnt matter, go to any art instruction course or drawing class and surprise surprise, you start by drawing from life. You can better understand the cylinder or box or whatever when you literally see it in front of you, in perfect perspective
