Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

start with a background color that better matches the refs background. color can be relative a lot of the time so have a an accurate background makes finding the rest of the colors easier

For someone starting out, would it be better to stick to pencil and paper for a while, or jump right into drawing digitally?

Also, the tablet I currently have is acting a bit funny, where the pen continues to draw stuff even when it's lifted from the screen. Using a Surface Pro 4 and SAI. Any way to fix that?

start with penvil and paper so you can focus on the fundamentals and not, have to worry about learning the program along with the other mass of concepts youll be learning. though it wouldnt hurt to play with it on the side either. but for the serious stuff stick with traditional. also, sounds like input lag. since youre new first cuplrit is probably too large of canvas size and too high of resolution. try 2000x2000 pixels at 150 ppi and keep increase canvas until you cant make large brush strokes without lag. make the canvases you normally work with a decent bit smaller than that. other than that i have idea as im not familiar with both the hardware and software youre using.

Start with fundamental life drawing. If you can draw a bowl of apples, or a bottle with flowers in it, or a nude figure, you can use the same techniques to draw a car.

If you "learn to draw cars" or "learn to draw animals" or "learn to draw flowers" you're just aping someone else's stylistic abstractions.
>>
>>2619090
Really poorly, son. That's like middle school art class tier, but with a little discipline and steady practice, you'll be amazed at how quickly you improve.

Take a bottle or a chess piece or something really simple, set it on a cloth drape at your eye level, and draw it with charcoal or pencil instead of colored paint. Pay attention to the angles, shapes and values that you see. Then do some small arrangements of simple geometric shapes (bare bottles, plates, blocks, etc)

Look up "proportional divider" on youtube if you're having trouble seeing shapes and matching their proportions on paper.
>>
>>2619222
oops i meantto say so far. the left is obviously futher along than the right and plan on working on it even more
>>
>>2619209
Good start, proportions are off though.
>eyes and mouth too large, and angles/contours are not true to the reference.
>poor range of values
>hair is scrabbled out as a series of lines (symbolic drawing)
>linework instead of rendering areas of values

First, Sketch out your gross proportions, using a pencil or whatever to gauge ratios (ie, what's the relationship between the height and width of the face, how wide is near eye compared to the width of the face, how many eyes fit across the lips, etc).

Then, break the face down into areas of light and dark. Draw the darkest area first, and build up from there. Charcoal will give you a broader range of values than graphite, but there's nothing wrong with a #2 pencil if you use the whole range of values.

Block out the big areas, quick and messy. Once you get that accurate, you can refine the details.
>>
>>2619228
I honestly can't tell. You're practicing poorly, so your results will continue to be poor.

It's like plunking out random keys on a piano and hoping that you'll somehow learn to play Bach, or nailing 2x4's together and hoping it'll turn into a house.

You gotta get some pencils or charcoal and just learn to draw shapes and value accurately before you put color into the mix. Read the sticky for some advice on grasping fundamentals. You can teach yourself, but only if you learn from the experience of others.

I'm not trying to be a tough guy on the internet or anything, just being honest.

I just have to use references more, I guess. At what point can one just draw without looking at them constantly, though?
>>
>>2620424
Lol I'm trying to get to that point myself, so I can't help you there. Personally I've done studies of a lot of skulls to try and memorize facial structure. Textbook references for simple structure help a lot too.

I know this thread isn't really for stylized drawings but I'm trying to construct the girl on the right and can't get her right at all, particularly the legs and feet
>>
>>2618734
Keep going m8! I recommend spending less time shading/rendering. Just use the side of the pencil with broad strokes to indicate the shadows and spend the extra time you save to do more of these. Check out Jeff Watts on Youtube and look how he sharpens and holds the charcoal pencil (same can be done for graphite pencils).
You are probably already aware of all the weaknesses in your drawing, because your eye seems to be better than your hand. It won't take long for you to make a break-through in skill level, just keep going.

What you probably need is self-discipline, not motivation. This can be learned just like anything else, little by little. Try making a schedule for yourself and following it. Just don't overwhelm yourself. Maybe also try working out and eating healthy as well.

>>
>>2619059
Beginner for sure, but keep drawing.

Go draw a bunch of different faces by blind contouring. At least 25 of them. Spend no more than a minute on each. Pay attention to things that line up vertically and horizontally, work your way through the photos
Then do some self portraits from a mirror (this is so you get practice seeing in 3D)

That's your homework, I'd be interested to see what you do

I'd do any or all of the more recommended general approach books like

>Bridgman - Complete Guide To Drawing From Life
>Hampton - Figure Drawing
>Loomis - Figure Drawing For All It's Worth
>etc

Right now your proportions look fucked up. Eventually you'll have fixed this and you'll start wondering what all the different bumps do and that's the point where you'd look up an actual anatomy book, like Zarins - Anatomy for Sculptors.

I disagree. One can be great at reproducing the shapes of what he sees without understanding the concept of form. Aping other people's method is how you learn about the contruction approach. As you gain experience, you make up your own contruction methods, but the fondamental principles are the same for every single artist who can draw from imagination.

I'd worry less about the hair than the facial features right now, it looks okay even though your pencil strokes were too thick. I think you exaggerated the horizontal shadows on the cheeks too much even though it's how it looks on the picture. Try studying planes of the face and exaggerate shadows that make faces look like faces rather than just shadows that appear on the picture. Nice job on the sighting, it looks like you spent a lot of time on that.

Try picking a picture with more dramatic lighting to study next time, it should be easier.
>>
>>2620737
What does that mean?
>>
>>2619366
Hair doesn't do that naturally without something to hold it up, is her ear actually being hidden by all that hair, bottom of nose needs to slope more. This isn't exactly in a realistic style and doesn't have a ref so there's not much to crit
>>
>>2620758
Yeah I tried to exaggerate some shadows because the lighting was so neutral but I ended up doing more under the cheekbones than I thought I did. it just seems kind of flat to me overall too. Thanks for the reply
>>
>>2620729
You're drawing what you think you see rather than what you actually see, i.e. your eyelashes are straight, repetitive lines rather than the little curvy hairs that they're supposed to be
Hair is messed up since there's supposed to be a skull under there, earlobe wayyy too large, center of nose should be more narrow, whole face is asymmetric, chin is weirdly flat, sides of the face are practically straight diagonal lines, etc.

You should probably read the sticky and study a lot on your own before posting here again since you're just gonna get a lot of shit

>>
>>2621628
Not him, but uh, yeah, first things first, your lines make it impossible to understand what your picture is supposed to be, and from that, it's clear that you don't understand construction, let alone attempt to use it. Perspective, proportion, anatomy, there's really no category of fundamentals here that isn't egregiously off besides those you haven't even touched on with the wireframe sketch. Worry about "style" once you can make real-life proportioned and rendered pictures, or else your skill will be forever stunted at this point and you'll never actually effectively understand any "style" at all.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, but it seems like some people don't understand that "style" means bending the rules for artistic effect, not ignoring them. First, you need to understand the rules/fundamentals, or else nothing will make sense, not in your learning or work. Check the sticky for some good resources on where to start, and best of luck.

I've always been pretty good at copying things from photos or by eye and that sort of shit (pic related, it's an old drawing exercise from one of my anatomy books) but whenever I try to stylize anything it falls apart. What do?
>>
>>2621674
It takes just as much practice, try imitating other artists who have different styles.

I started off with drawing backgrounds and got OK (although I still have trouble with perspective)
I thought I could somehow transition to humans with that experience but I guess there's a lot more to it then simple shapes

I'll go back and start at step 1

There is an effort here, so I feel compelled to say something instead of just "read the sticky" like how everyone else is going to tell you.

There's an obvious lack of knowledge in a lot of areas, specifically anatomy, proportion, and drapery. Like u know dogshit about them. I don't want to say it's a bad idea tackling all at once because this is your first thing or whatever and its fun. First off, a lot of the face is symbol drawn - it's not your style, it's you not knowing how features of the face work and resorting to ovals with dots in them for eyes. Read Loomis' Head and Hands or Hampton's Figure Drawing (it will also deal with construction of the head).

I see the idea you have with the body. The most glaring thing is the deltoids - you have no idea how they work. Try Bridgman's Drawing from Life or Hampton. I can't see the rest of the body behind the dress but the silhouette tells me it's already out of proportion.

Lastly, arbitrary creases and folds in the dress is not convincing at all. Drapery is an entirely different subject on its own - Try Hogarth's Dynamic Drapery or Cliff Young's Drapery from Head to Toe.

Most of all, your shit is fucking flat. The trick to drawing is making something look 3D on a 2D surface. Draw a ton of 3D objects in perspective, paint still lifes, do anything to increase your awareness of 3D before you move on to something as complex as the body.

If you're serious, it's going to be a long journey. So get to it.

By the way read the sticky.

There is no set in stone sequence of things in art that you should study one after another. You can trust your gut and decide what needs the most improvement, or post your work here and we'll try to point you in the right direction.

How do I break out of my comfort zone?
I feel as if I've been drawing the same type of shit without any real progress.
Like I've mainly been drawing characters and working on bodies, but I can really only do like one or two poses that don't look like complete ass and so I just stick with said poses.
>>
>>2622119
you draw other poses , and keep doing them till you get good at them. or work on something else like backgrounds.

why didn't you spend that time drawing? you learn nothing from reading about art but not actually putting the things you read about into practice.
>>
I want to learn how to draw people. mainly bodies right now, whats best to start with, gesture or shapes? and how can i put that into practice so it sticks with my autistic mind? i need some kind of game plan because lately ive just been milling around barely making any progress.
>>
How long does roughly take to get over the worst of symbol drawing?
>>
>>2621583
what the shit
>>
>>2622119
i used to only draw shit in 1 of 2 styles and i broke out of it once i realized i wasn't improving and tried looking for other ways to draw things. i think the main thing was looking at how other artists drew things: what brushes and techniques they used, their workflow, etc. and tried to switch up my own workflow based on things i could see worked for other people.so i guess just look at what other artists do and try using their techniques. i started being able to push my own boundaries once i started doing that and art got a lot easier.

>>
>>2622310
Pretty much, but don't think of it as "now I'm doing this, then I'll move on". You start with what's the most important (the fundamentals) and add on top of it.
For example, you can't draw good muscles if you can't draw bones and when you do draw the muscles, you don't drop the bones. Same when you add fat and finally skin.
>>
>>2622327

Book: Keys to Drawing - Project 1-C.
How bad is that?
Also: had you ever impression that you look at your subdget from a liitle different angle, but you didn't move an inch?
>>

Also the photo can be in a little different angle, then "drawing".
>>
>>2622432
horrible, but... interesting...

the angles are all wrong af

for your level I really recommend starting with simpler objects meaning less "fluid" shapes. start by learning to measure length and angle of lines. do the cliche of holding the pencil at arms lengt to measure it helps a lot in learning to measure by eye.

Inking is basically filling out the shade with pure black, also getting the line weight right.
I would suggest learning lighting and practice filling a certain value of shade with just black

get alluminum foil and tape the windows in your drawing room to block night sky, get a bright overhead light if you dont already have one white or blue not yellow if your bed is in your drawing room turn the mattress on its side. buy bulk jetalert caffeine pills from amazon, bulk asprin, bulk tylenol, use them together when you really feel like shit don’t take the jet alert til after 3am. when sunrise, you should get a second wind, good time to shower, breakfast, trick yourself into thinking you got sleep. At other times, don’t eat, food make you sleepy. Drink lots of water, pour many glasses and keep on your desk so not getting up. Keep empty bottle near desk for piss. I listen podcasts or audiobooks because music keep messing with. earbuds instead of headphones, hurt your ears after 15+ hours and break the flow. If your resting head on the desk or leaning back on chair, immediately get up and pace back fourth, call a friend, anything to force you not to be a bitch and pussy out. Don’t stop drawing. Don’t lie down. Don’t “rest” eyes. Don’t take breaks. If your hands start to hurt your not drawing from your shoulder! Stretches can help with shoulder pains but don’t walk away from the desk. May want a pillow to sit on if your chairs hard. DON’T OVER THINK IT just draw, one minute, five minute, slide show may need to go shorter times if your tired. Get your reference downloaded in bulk and don’t be picky just draw what you see. Pick a time in advance like 5pm next day or w/e, and don’t crash until that time. When you do go to bed, make sure you go to bathroom first and lie on your back not your side.
