Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

Would learning to draw them as basic shapes first help or should i just continue with figure drawing?

anatomically the face is placed alright. You generalize and simplify too much, though. Examples: the wrickles in the forehead, the right eye, etc.
The only drawn eye makes it seem he's looking at us when in the reference he's looking to the left. That'll have to be changed.
The mouth should not look like a shitty anime mouth where it's only on one side of the face.

Cross-hatching: Study Leonardo Da Vinci's drawings or any other famous artists. They all have beautifully done drawings.
here's an example: http://arttattler.com/Images/NorthAmerica/California/Los%20Angeles/Getty%20Museum/Hatched/02-gm_32004501.jpg

Keep practicing, man. Even if it's 30mins to an hour every day. It'll all start to make sense soon enough.

>>
>>2559713
impressed that you're still working on this, i remember you from several threads ago.

your lighting seems inconsistent. the building in the background shouldn't be casting any kind of shadow on the ground, especially with the way the columns are illuminated. same for the columns of the building in the front here, the way the base of each column is shaded isn't consistent and it actually looks like they're floating above the top step. you really need to determine where your light source is coming from. actually i'm not sure what those front columns are doing at all. there seems to be two of them stuck together at each instance? or is one supposed to be behind the other?

just an extra comment, but i'm not sure why you have columns on that building in the background? clearly decorative, but it doesn't frame anything, and also neither one has a base. the windows also seem a bit close to the roof but that's my take on it. i can't determine whether anyone could even see out of those windows. oh, and those are very narrow steps.
>>
>>2560398
should make sure you have a solid idea of where you want your light source to come from. This picture makes it look like you have random light hitting one spot but not effecting other parts of... whatever this is. Forest? Cave? The fact that I can't tell where I am in this picture is a bad sign.

The highlight on the ground looks as if it's floating. I'd adjust your perspective, add detail, and make sure you've thought of all possible sources of how the light would be effecting each (rock? branch?).

Hope this helps you get gud
>>
>>2560171
your messy lines bother me, but it's whatever. Some people like that and think it's artistic.

Only part I can really critique would be that you draw your eyes too small sometimes. Most pictures seem to be proportionally correct but you have slip ups. You also generalize a bit to much.

Should challenge yourself by drawing a realism piece instead of cartoons.
>>
>>2560453
thanks alot friend. quesion for you, or anyone else who could answer. how do i give my brushstrokes purpose? ill often try to sketch something, and it just ends up looking like a huge mess, with no lines really leading anywhere. i know a sketch is supposed to be messy, but even when trying to refine things, i cant make any lines/strokes that actually help define whatever is it im trying to make

>>2560463
No problem.
I think I understand your next question.
The best way to make a single brushstroke have purpose is to really look at the subject you're painting. Exam it. Every part of it. The ear, what's around the ear, the value of lining of the ear, inner ear, the hair, etc.
For example would be the picture in my post. Lucian Freud really look at every detail of his face. The change in value from his upper cheek bone to below the cheek bone where the change in value gives off the solid illusion of depth on his face. Or, his nose, he gives 4 white highlights where either side of this piece has darker values of similar colors.
Another trick that is used in this picture is the color change in his painting. In the Shadowed areas he uses blues, grays, and greens and on the brighter parts he uses a lot of orange and yellows.
>>
>>2560459
>>2560411
thanks guys, ill keep what you said in mind
>>
>>2560436
i get distracted and start working on other stuff. all good points about the lighting, i havent actually settled on it yet. at first i was going for the it coming from almost perpendicular but i decided to try for it coming from above and from the left. i might keep it like that so ill fix the shading on the wall. the wall decorations are just for show, good point on them needing a base, i couldnt figure out what was off. i was really inspired by sunlight and shadow by albert bierstadt. as for the steps. youre right, they could use some reworking. the problem i had before was there were too few steps but then that cause problems with the scale of the rotunda to steps. thanks a lot of the critique.

As a feng shill, I'd have to say understanding of 3d shapes is a more worthwhile investment.

That way you can draw your chair from any angle, upside down, or even exploded. Whereas Sycra can only draw the chair facing him. Turn it around? Redo the whole technique from step one.

if you're drawing in two point, just converge two sets of parallel lines to two different vanishing points on the same horizon line. check out drawabox btw, it's where i got that image from

Post work. Can you draw a skull? I think it is good to learn how to draw human from the inside out.
>>
>>2561666
Looks wrong to me. There is no way that box is accurate if it has 3 perfectly vertical lines. Drawabox is what led me to this, I noticed he cannot draw angled boxes correctly and I don't want to end up like that.

i want to learn to draw, but i feel completely overwhelmed and directionless every time i set out to self-teach. i guess it's just a matter of picking a book, ignoring everything else and just drawing everything in there, but it seems like every time i set out to do that i end up second-guessing myself until i eventually give up.

No.

It's more about just drawing everyday even if it's just for an hour. If you want to be accurate, just take your time and measure.

your textures are looking kinda wonky. Textures aren't just designs on surfaces, it's what the surface is made of. And I'm not sure what textures a lot of those are supposed to be, and the main point of textures is to make it more immediately obvious what kind of thing you're looking at

yeah you're right about some of the perspective lines not being parallel. if you get those right and treat the major planes of the face as a box having everything on each plane be parallel, you should have something solid. the hairline and the mouth seem like the biggest offenders here. the nose isn't really clear and it's too easy for it to be interpreted as not parallel too.

also you probably weren't thinking about it but the tangents in the neck make everything below his chin completely 2d

>>
>>2562027
I just try copy it the best i could, now i see the hat is fucked up a little
>>
How do I start on portraits? I can't seem to sketch the outline of the faces without messing up the proportions and making it too wide or too circular etc. On full body drawings it isn't such a problem as the face is small enough that I can draw it and work out the proportions for the rest of the picture from there. But when it's just a headshot I can't get the initial oval to work.
>>
>>2562085
Trace the outline and try to fill in the inside structures, then draw it again using those structures.
>>
>>2562091
so draw an egg or whatever and then an eye for example, then draw internal features relative to the eye and then the head outline relative to the features?

it's best to get to a point where you can do a convincing and consistent generic realistic head before going into drawing faces from imagination. just go through prokos videos on drawing the head from any angle, then the features. and if you can find it, go through vilppus head drawing lectures.

if you make sure you don't skip steps and spend the appropriate amount of time on each one (e.g. post your loomis heads here and get critiques before moving on) you should be able to do really nice heads in no time

Is there more to getting your hand to draw what you want it to than just practice? I've been at this for four months now, I can draw straight lines in the directions I want. It takes me several tries to get the curve, ellipse, or S I want every single time I try though, and even then it's not exactly what I want, just "close enough". I just tried drawing a circle 30 times, and got 5 I would consider acceptable. Is there a trick to this? I've watched how Peter Han and Proko hold a pen, I emulate that. I've never had anywhere near this much trouble getting my arm to play an instrument, even at top level, or consistently execute in fighting games.

I already know the answer is "practice more", but I'd at least like confirmation that it really is just bullshit.

see what you draw as you hear what you're playing on an instrument and make the corresponding changes to your execution of the task.
>>
>>2562566
have you tried charcoal? the shading could be a lot smoother and natural with it. that's not a criticism of your shading as you are limited by the medium in this case
>>
>>2562566
are you using more than one pencil? this looks like it was entirely drawn in like 6B or something, which isn't bad, but it's good to have the full range of values. plus you can go lighter than what you arleady have.
>>
>>2562565

your muscles and tendons are not used to certain movements, not used to apply force in certain angles and positions, that is why your body gets into a more familiar position by moving the shoulder for example, some people just rotate the paper or move their whole upper body. You feel how your wrist tenses up as soon as it get closer to a certain position, same with the shoulder or any other part of your body in general.

In short, yeah practice more is the only way. If you do it slowly, you'll even feel the tension rising in your muscles and that is where you just fuck up as your movements become rigid and lose precision. I think the best way is trying to be relaxed and even sport helps but not solely weight lifting, which increases the rigidity of your body.

Putting my cryptogay tendencies aside, you should first watch the angles and shapes, then compare them to each other, see how much bigger A is than B, at what height of X the Y ends and so on. And the most important stuff, take more than 5 minutes if you want it to be accurate. It's not a gesture drawing, correct your mistakes over and over again; you will not get it right at the first try unless you're considerably skilled already.

It's good. But the reasons given for why you have to use a felt tip pen are bullshit. They're basically "if you use a pencil then you might use an eraser, and erasing is bad". The obvious answer to that is don't use an eraser. The REAL reason you shouldn't use a pencil is because graphite is a lubricant, so when you draw over the lines repeatedly the pencil will naturally stick to the previous line with less effort, which is cheating.

Before moving to the features, try and make sure the orientation of the head is correct. In the picture, the man's head seems to be leaning back ever so slightly, pushing his chin a little more forward.

I like this. cool stuff

>>2562662
Like other anons have said the pen work is cool, but more than the anatomy the lack of form here is driving me crazy. The palm until the last knuckle should basically be a box and you need to convey that it's taking up that space.

It might be basic like the other anon said but I still like it quite a bit. I particularly like the talon details - cool stuff.

>>2560872
I really like these. Do you use Hampton for your faces too? I could never seem to get his approach alone to work for me that well.

>>2560887
Good stuff. Some of your lines are still a little hairy, and it looks like the weighting could be a bit more deliberately, but this is a good start. Keep chugging along

Made the PR chick from Nintendo E3 this morning. Whaddya think?

everything looks flat

the skull is looking straight to the right, the little button things on his jacket are looking at us directly as if he were facing us forward, the values are all over the place, his mask looks like a cardboard cutout, the bird has no volume either

also the hand is way too chunky, when it comes to drawing hands you want to draw the shape, not the symbol

also learn how to draw cloth, clothes are not uniformly straight and cylindrical like in your pic, there are tons of wrinkles and drapes when someone wears clothes

so my suggestion you is look up guides on how to create volume and how to properly draw clothing

Eyes are suppose to look at the hand, I hope the figure isnt to tall this time.
I also experimented with shading a couple of times lateley but it just looks off unless I completley copy an image.

Don't worry about anatomy right now if you are wrestling with proportions. make it your goal to have a proportioned gesture in your quick sketch. If you can't do that in 30sec don't worry up the time until you can. once you get that proportionate gesture down then you can move on to shape and form.

I was gonna do that but I've hit a complete block these last few days so I was just following the book. Haven't drawn in awhile so I needed something to do.
>>
>>2563997
damn those lines are good but your proportions are fucked. take a moment to take in the whole figure, you don't learn much about movement or proportion just by drawing a segment (you neglected his left legger there), the torso should have a stronger c curve to really emphasize the movement. when simplified, the line of action should essentially be a c curve from the head to the hip, with the motion leading through down to the ground. my biggest piece of advice to you is really just to take time to assess the whole pose before you put down information. your specific proportion problems are that his arms are hella long, cranium is kinda big, and his legs a bit tiny. keep up the good linework tho, looks rad.

Where should I start learning to draw if all I can do is scribble weak scribbles from imagination while being unable to draw from life for shit?

I've heard it's best to dive right in, but my proportions and angles are wayyyy off when sketching real things, and that makes me feel like shit and boom I go back to my comfort zone.

Pic is a thing I made some time ago, digital because I'm a dumb fuck who got a drawing tablet thinking it will make me better at drawing.
>>
>>2564070
Gesture drawing helps with getting proportions correct other than that you've just gotta draw figures and read some books like keys to drawing or Hamptons figure drawing. There are also videos of 1min + videos that replicate life drawing.

Need help with the texture of the green mottled bronze. I have repainted this thing several times and just scraped it again. I cant figure out how to do the change in colors and maintain the appropriate values. Also when I try to just scribble how I think it should look it looks like organic vines or weird monster flesh and not rusted metal.

I am practicing with only hard and soft round brush and a limited pallet. I will not use layers, brushes, or photo textures for the purpose of this exercise.
>>
>>2564092
your just using coool colours theres warm reds in your reference.
>>
>>2563943
Personally I find it better to use smaller resolution photos when using a reference. It's harder to see the details so it forces me to think about what should be going on in the face based on the anatomy. I don't really like copying the reference exactly how it is, I like to use my imagination a bit.

>I am practicing with only hard and soft round brush and a limited pallet. I will not use layers, brushes, or photo textures for the purpose of this exercise
That's retarded, i can do this in seconds using stippled brush and a few blending modes. Why are you making this harder? Do you think it somehow makes you more of an artist? You're doing digital art, use the medium to your advantage.

Question,
Im not trying to be spoonfed but whats better for learning a cartoon style. Drawing other cartoons or drawing from life and converting
>>
>>2564223
Drawing other cartoons if you like stuff like Adventure Time, Steven Universe or any other animated cartoons made in Flash.

Still really depends what style you want to achieve though. If you like Hanna barbera, chuck jones, walt disney drawing from life is the way to go to have your drawings some feeling of action/life.
>>
>>2564223
Cartoons are fun to draw, and can't ever hurt, but when you're just starting to learn, always always always try to draw from life

awkward pose, you should use a poser or reference!the shoulders are way too much to the left and you could prob make the other arm visible. i like the folds/details of the scarf :-)
also are you smudging your graphite oh god dont do it you gotta create values with different shading pencilz
>>
>>2562813
uhh i don't know much about proper pencil technique desu i'm sure there's some information online? sorry haha but HB seems pretty darkto use as your lightest value to me though!! like maybe throw an F or H/2H at it :-)
what i do (and it's probably wrong)is start with the lightest value and attack it with an H or 2H and then progressively use higher B pencils as i go darker with values
>>
>>2563389
>The REAL reason you shouldn't use a pencil is because graphite is a lubricant, so when you draw over the lines repeatedly the pencil will naturally stick to the previous line with less effort, which is cheating.

I just bought a Staedtler Triplus Fineliner felt-tip pen, and the line still sticks to the previous line somewhat. But it's not as obvious as with pencil, so the difficulty level is higher. It's also not as smooth as a 8B pencil, although it's smooth by felt-tip standards (I have also tried a Faber-Castell PITT, which is scratchier). I'm not sure how this affects the difficulty level.
