Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

Visit the usual "Artbook Thread" to find your desired books. (Or look in the new sticky)

Do not forget to PLEASE RESIZE and crop your images before uploading them. 1kpx is fine.

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

>>
>>2556639
its too much effort to explain, and id make a quick vid for you if this wasnt 4c but for now just look at your plumb lines or use form.
>>
>>2556710

Not necessarily, restating lines give more organic look to drawing.

Chicken scratching is when to draw a line you end it shortly and begin where you ended and again in a loop thus scratching whole length.

If you place whole lines, but then another near it that is slightly "corrected" previous one - it's not chicken scratching. But you need to put your lines properly.

It's such a shame that we haven't cracked how to learn how to draw with really good detail and perspective from imagination. When I first started drawing a few days ago it was because I was so attracted to the idea of making this really cool looking image of anything my imagination came up with.

Now I see all I have before me are Boring studies after boring studies and soul crushing grinding exercises that will ultimately never teach me how to do this. And no matter how good I get it will only be because I had to use a bunch of pictures as a crutch to make the drawing work in the first place. That sucks.
>>
>>2556863
90% of this board will never really produce good stuff but continue trying, if you don't have the talent you should just give up

if you take the time to actually learn how to draw, then you will be able to do what you say. It takes years you idiot. It takes fucking years of work and if you think there's any way it might not, you should just stop now and save yourself disappointment.
>>
>>2556863
That's because drawing from imagination is a big step above from drawing from photos/life. There wouldn't be a beginner imagination drawing thread because it's not for beginners. Imaginative realism by gurney is a good book for it. Shows you step by step what it takes to create a big production painting. If you want to draw a picture of a car for example you should draw 5-10 cars before hand. You can't draw something if you don't know what it looks like.

If you find drawing boring than leave.

programmer who has realized default windows forms may have cut it in 2002 but now everything needs a visual element to be taken seriously. i've decided to devote my free time from now on to learning "to art"
i've mostly just read books up until now this is the first time i've put it into practice

#1 my method was to pick a point (eg belly button) and then use my pencil to measure to the next landmark but i kept ending up way out of proportion
#2 was trying to break it down into shapes spaced by pencil measuring again but it just looked weird to me.
#3 i did like #2 but instead of measuring out i just looked at the reference as i drew. i did the torso first and then had a lot of trouble placing the head on it and i started running out of focus at that point anyway

>tl;dr

>>2557354

I'm seeing some improvement, at least you're trying to do the eyes differently than usual (which was shit) Once you're confortable with your shapes and dexterity, you should drop those thick outlines and start drawing with actual tones.

>>2557387

Ugh, you should watch how the big cats do figures and maybe try to follow them. There's no "right" way to do it, but for me it would be a combination of the 3 listed, so a little bit of construction and a little bit of observational drawing. Also starting from a random point is kind of a bad idea, specially if your measuring is not developed (which explains why your figure ends out of proportion), you should always work from big to small, always look for the biggest forms/shapes and attack those first, it will be a lot easier to compare the rest of the parts if you have the biggest already down on paper. Dunno man, figure drawing is a pretty difficult subject to start with, but i'm wishing you luck on your journey to gittin gud.

For perspective, an easy rule to remember is that things get smaller as they get farther away. Seems obvious, but in your picture for example the left should and left foot HAVE to be smaller than their counterparts since they are farther away. This rule alone is pretty much all you need to know for perspective if you properly apply it to everything.

Cute girls are often 'feel' easier to draw since it is what most people draw anyway.

Myself included desu, but the poses are clearly what will help and artist progress.

I'll be doing this one:>>2556492
Very nice photo.
>>
>>2556580
It is a difficult photo to begin with because the entire idea behind this lifestyle is belance, you will find this within the pose. Try it out in front of the mirror and try to find out when you trip and how your limbs are at that moment. Clothes are of a later concern.

He is falling over.
Start by not, ever, chopping off his foot. You can simply put in a triangle if you find it too hard to draw and practice later.

>>
>>2558115
Dunno. Tried sketching the proportions a few times and superimposing them on the reference to check. Once I got them more or less right... just drew. Funny thing is I discovered halfway better ways to do stuff (e.g: left eye vs right), and could have gone back to fix things like the right side of the hair, the irises, shadows, the mouth, the turtleneck... but it was 2 a.m.

tl;dr: I'm just a noob who spent 100 hours in SAI.

So start over. If you mess up again, start over. Still not happy? Start over. But NEVER amputate unless you intend to for whatever reason. Placement is the absolute most basic skill. You can crop the image always but never add.

oh. since youre probably not gonna get good crit here you can go up one thread in the future. By the way, stop trying to draw every single line. in doing so you missed the subtilities of the drawing, line the uneveness of the back of the hair, the clump of eyelashes, how the eyes come back almost square on the inside part, how the ear is barely visible, the softness of the lips, the cleanlyness of eyes, etc. Focus on big shapes and use value. You probably come from a strong paper background with pencil and it really shows. Pencil is a tool to hide mistakes by letting the mind fill in information. Digital is meant to be simplified. Since IRL you dont see every strand anyway.

Mods and Janitors will shut it down fast. The "nose bro edition" in the title will imply all Nose Bros can post.

If most of the Nose Bros in the thread are samefags, it will be removed quickly; as well.

So most, if not all, Nose Bros should post in the thread. Yet allow other anons to post.

Should the Intermediate thread focus on Fine Arts and Master Studies? Should the thread focus on anything else?

Most of the drawings in that thread are stylized. And there isnt a set agenda in that thread too.

The Beginner Thread is to help beginners. The Stylized thread is to get crits in general as well as on style. Whats the Draw thread for? Quick crits? Porn thread, for crits on Porn

The "Intermediate Thread: Nose Bro Edition" will focus on Fine Arts and Master Studies. I'd call it Master Studies Thread, but that wouldnt get enough traffic as Intermediate Thread; at least I dont think it will. But I dont think focusing soley on FIne arts and Master studies can justify an Intermediate Thread. So what else should the thread focus on?

peter han's dynamic sketching. drawabox is a poor quality substitute for this.

michael hampton's analytical figure drawing

sometimes they'll give you specific exercises, other times they'll just give you an example of a technique. take that example and do it yourself repeatedly, first correcting any mistakes you made, then making slight variations in what you're trying to do - as per sycra's "iterative drawing" video on youtube - until you feel comfortable with the material.

Damn his website looks so clean, I thought it would be fun to go through it. I want to get to a point where I don't have to stop and think about weird perspectives, this guys doesn't even bother to do them lel

how to draw, dynamic sketching lectures, and analytical figure drawing contain all the material on drawabox in more and better detail, with instructors that actually know their shit and are qualified to teach it

as >>2559162 says, spend a lot of time on the stuff and you will get good

>>2559163
the material is fine, but the guy is a student who took notes, not an educator

How many of you draw the basic shapes and map out proportions before refining? I know some people like to completely draw the eye for example before drawing the rest of the face
>>
>>2559214
Learn to draw the shapes first. Stop trying to find away around it. It really is essential
>>
>>2559225
answer the question faggot
>>
>>2559228
Obviously I do. I can't speak for anyone else here except I see the majority of folks on this board saying the same thing I do. If your drawings are wonky and unproportional and you are not mapping out and drawing basic shapes first that is probably your problem..... faggot
>>
>>2559214

Most the people who start at a point like an eye and grow out have drawn long enough that proportions are intuitive and they can eyeball it.

If proportions aren't intuitive for you, do construction. The entire fucking point is to get your proportion and basic forms down before investing your time in rendering. If you're garbage at art and can't get your proportions right, why on earth would you waste your time rendering an eye only to fuck up the rest of the drawing?

I find it really difficult to draw anything that isn't the standard straight on/profile/three quarter
>>
>>2558737
Angle of the nose needs to be steeper. Eyebrow isn't a simple arc. The space between the eye and the nose is too wide.

You should always compare your work now to where you were a month ago to keep track.

Having fluctuations in your drawing ability means you're learning. Just don't stop.

Cut back on that chickenscratch.

How often do you draw basic shapes? If you understand how to construct a body from basic shapes, and you know how those shapes look from any angle, it helps a lot in bypassing the 'standard' angles. The likely reason you struggle to draw from different angles is you've just memorized how stuff looks from those angles instead of internalizing the way shapes can move in space.

Sorry but my phone for some reason was taking it a little fuzzy, and I think it looks better in person.

Had trouble with feet, and hands since I only had a #2 pencil, and couldn't make fine lines.
>>
>>2559393
The left foot looks good, but the knee needs to follow the form of the foot, so pull the line of the leg (below the knee) back just a bit.

Read 'drawing on the right side of the brain'
>>
>>2559475
You look like you need to do more careful measuring, since your proportions and gesture are really off. On the off chance you didn't go through the sticky, Keys to Drawing goes through the methods of measuring that would help you out here.

Compare the reference and your sketch more carefully. Look at where the neck connects to the head beneath the chin in the photo. Look at the almost triangular empty space formed by her right arm. Look at how her right leg is posed. You should redraw it while taking more careful measurements.
