Hey guys, could I have some input? I've spent so much time trying to figure out if the eyes are looking straight at you, like something just seems off. Is it the shape of the right eye? The iris or pupil? How can I make my art better? Maybe one of you will see something I can't because after looking at it so long and making a million revisions, it still looks odd. I zoom out, she looks up, I zoom in and it's almost there? Help please :) Thanks guys.

Yeah I made the eyes bigger on purpose for a more dolly look. I see what you mean about the hair, it looks like she's wearing a wig that's sliding off. Haven't done anything with the hands yet, just the basic outline and base color. I still have a ways to go with this drawing. I'll probably take the hair in more, especially from the top/upper left.

>>2516109
Yeah I wasn't going for realistic, but more like semi-realistic. As in, cartoony doll features but lots of skin texture. I'll try the skull thing though, it might help me out with the weird eye thing, and the way the hair sits. I did use a reference, and their part was off to the side like that but with the changes I made to the face, it seems kinda off. Thanks for the suggestions! :)

Wow thanks for the in depth crit anon. Sounds like you know a lot more about color than I do. I tried my best to apply what you said but I'm still a little unsure about the way it looks right now.
I tried desaturating the contrasting colors a lot, or moving them closer on the hue scale to eachother so they weren't so distracting.
Does this work better? Also I applied a cool photofilter to the one on the left, I've heard this helps tie the colors together but I don't know if its working.
Thanks a lot anon!

it feels like a paint over of a 3d model.
>>
>>2516112
I'm sorry for my late reply. Yes, I use cheap oil paints aswell because I'm a poor bastard, but good oil paints are a good investment. Basically, there are two important differences between a good and a bad oil paint: pigment purity and strenght. A good way to know if what you are buying is decent, even if it's cheap, is to check the ammount of pigments used, for example, a Ultramarine Blue pure pigment is a PB29, so, if you check on the back of the paint tube and that's what's there, you know this is at least not a mix to try to reproduce the original pigment. My cheap Ultramarine Blue is PB29. I also have, for example, two Naples Yellow here. One of them is PY42/PW6 and the other is PY42/PY35/PW6. Both of them are crap. The pure Naples Yellow is a PY41. So yes, you should check for those things before you buy paints, sometimes there is little difference between an expensive and cheap paint. And, in the case of Naples Yellow, I should buy a better one. Here you can find a database of pigments. http://www.artiscreation.com/Color_index_names.html

Now for strenght. The quality of a pigment is known as you add white. The more white it takes to lose strenght, the more different values you can obtain with it. And also, observe if it maintains saturation instead of going torwards gray (that's a characteristic of dirty colors). I hope I helped.

Nice start. You've got some rather strange colours going on though and it looks a bit muddy. I know you are going for the opposite temperatures in light/shadow but it is a little to extreme at the moment.

Also be careful of your form shadows vs cast shadows. Typically you want your form shadows to have a softer edge to them at the terminator so the form rolls over.

life drawing.

i'm thinking about adding more details to the wood and the rendering is not quite finished yet. besides that i'm quite happy.
i learned a shitload about how form moves in space while doing this, because of the stucture on the wood itself.

I've been drawing for a month now.
any critique is more than welcome.

>>
>>2516353

Too many hard edges.

I really like it, but I think it would look way better if the brick texture got lost more in the shadows. You could also soften the shadow edges a touch. All in all you need to some more lost and soft edges to get rid of the 3d feel. I'm not saying you have to go full painterly or anything but definitely soften things up.
>>
>>2516758
The room's perception is off. While I think this is a good concept you have, it just needs a little work. The walls don't seem parallel, and the floor looks almost as if it's leaning up instead of flat. Like the base of the tv doesn't fit with how the bed looks like on the floor, or the top/bottom of the dresser or desk. Look at the furthest right bottom corner of the desk, you can see it's not flat on the ground either, it shows the wall underneath it. the window's perception is off too. Even if it's a cartoon and not realism, perception still counts in having a good composition. The toilet paper roll looks like it's floating, the bed/close wall seems like it should be rotated a bit counterclockwise, and maybe a little vertically as well.

So basically all the perception of this photo is off, and to fix it, you'd have to get some guidelines, maybe find some online you like and read/learn about it. watch a youtube video explaining.

Also that tv is huge, you can't even get it through the doorway. It seems giant because I imagine the back to be bulky since it isn't touching the back wall. Maybe someone else could agree with what I'm saying?
>>
Help pleasek.
>>
>>2516834
Yea you were a big help, thank you!
That link is great as well.
I'm pretty cheap too so I'll probably have to settle for cheaper paints, or maybe a more limited palette.
Any limited set of colours you'd recommend to start with?
I feel starting with a lot of colours from the get go would just be wasted on me, I have experience painting digitally, but the mixing of paints aspect in digital is missing for the most part, so I don't have that much experience with that.
>>
>>2516977
Not him, but I'd recommend either zorn palette (white, yellow ochre, vermillion, payne's gray) or simple warm/cool palette (white, warm yellow + cool yellow, warm blue + cool blue, warm red + cool red)
>>
>>2516977
Me again. I would rather tell you to understand color bias than to simply pick up a reduced palette without understanding the colors you are picking and using and why.
A warm/cool palette is a great pick, but you need to understand in traditional media what is cool and what is warm.
Color bias is the tendency of a color to go torwards another. For example, Ultramarine blue pigments usually have a tendency to go torwards red, so for that, it is considered a warm blue. When mixed with, for example, a yellow, it won't give you the purest or more powerful of greens, it is a blue that is better for purples if you are going for strong colors. Ftalo blue, in the other hand, goes torwards green, which is in the cool spectrum of the color wheel, and it's great for making real strong greens. That happens with every color, every color has a bias, and the purest the pigments used, the least dirty it is and easier it is to understand what you are doing.
I will drop you a link with information about color bias, the website is terrible looking but it has good info.

Also, I'm using right now (and this works for me and it's not exactly a suggestion)
Titanium White, Burnt Sienna, Light Cadmium Red, Magenta, Naples Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Ftalo Blue, Payne's Gray.

face seems flat - mouth doesnt show its shape, you have a symmetrical shape for the mouth while the mouth should turn in space.
proportionwise it feels wonky in the body
if you are painting why are you using black lines like on the arm and neck?

in general id advise you to get into figure drawing a lot, or you will be a slave eternally of how accurately can you copy reality. because eventually you will be more accurate and people wont notice any mistakes, but you won't be able to differ one bit from the picture without nailed in fundamentals.
and you won't even admit to yourself why, and no one will understand why you aren't michelangelo tier yet (at least in outlook).

just my two cents though.

The thing is she genuinely seems to have put that all behind her too and compared to most women on twitch like legendarylea doesn't try to use sex and pandering to get views, she'd have way more than 70 viewers on average if he did. I think she sees her gamecatt identity as a break from that, if you look at her magicatt youtube account she was definitely using cleavage for views but that was 3 years ago.

There was kind of a heartbreaking moment this summer when she was streaming and a popular warcraft streamer raided her and one of his mods linked her old stuff and then it got spammed in chat and she looked like she was having a panic attack had to stop the stream and came back 10 minutes later and clearly been sobbing and then she didn't stream for a month after. I have a lot of genuine affection for her and think she's a sweetheart who made bad choices in the past and she deserves to be able to move on.

Try to make yout shapes cleaner, i know you want it to look painterly but the key to making something look painterly while not looking like shit is to keep the fundementals very clean. Work on your value structure aswell. It's hard to tell objects apart when they have the same values as everything else and it will make your compositions better aswell.
You can study pic related.

Brian is literally the most immature faggot I've ever seen.
Seriously, I've been here for the past 5 years and Brian is the only person who has continued to be a worthless piece of garbage who isn't worth anything.

His art sucks, his personality sucks, he's probably a giant creepy jackass in real life.

I thought /ic/ was better than this. There were a few other people that couldn't receive critiques like normal human beings and /ic/ weeded them out so that they never would return. But Brian thinks he's become a meme, when in reality he's just fueling his own demise.

When you really think about it, if Brian doesn't change now, he'll continue being a motherfucker until all that's left are his shitty drawings and paintings and no one left to "encourage" him.

He's a piece of shit, I'm not sure why we keep following him and encouraging him. There's waaay better people on here to support.

In white skin, there are always 4 tones that you will likely find: pink, yellow, green and blue. And when I say those colors, I'm not even saying it in its purest form (unmixed), or saturated to the point of being easily recognizable. They are mostly always there to a degree and you have to search for them, and you have to recognize how saturated or closer to gray those hues are and you need to know how to mix them in a clean way so the skin doesn't look muddy (subject I talked about earlier in the post). That's basically it, and the only way to achieve that is training your eye, training it to see the colors underneath the obvious and get its values right. To have a good eye is the most important thing, both to understand the color you are seeing and to recognize the difference between what is there and what you are putting in the canvas. Is it missing more yellow? Is it missing more pink? There is no shortcut.
That's what gives dimension to skin tones: variety. As to shadows areas, I particurlarly believe the painting happens in the lighted areas, so I like to make them look flat, not really monochromatic though. I vary the color of the shadow/cast shadow depending on the area of the face/body. I just started painting something, and I'm a messy bastard - I know, but those are 3 very lazily pre mixed pink/orange/blue that I picked for the start. I will mix them between each other mostly trying to keep it coherent and clean, but not always either. I hope I helped you. Also, keep in mind that colors are usually less saturated and neutral than you would think, if you are going torwards a natural look.

Except Benjamin is HUGE on edge control, and I think that >>2515724 could benefit from looking at benjamin's paintings.

I mean obviously he/she can take whatever she wants from him, even if it's nothing, but I thought I'd just put Benjamin into his/her mind.
>>
>>2517794
She probably already does look at his work. Or at least is aware of it. Her stuff is similar enough that comparisons to him have been brought up several times already.

I think it's dangerous though to tell her to conform closer to Benjamin's style. Let her take her own course and not just ape someone else's approach.

Hope this isn't too personal, but what was your relation to him? Did you have a falling out? A breakup? How did you know him?

Anyways, I can understand wanting to separate your style from his. At the moment there are obviously some things in common so I doubt comparisons will stop for a while until you develop in new directions that will be a certain distance from his work. I don't think anyone intends any negative things from the comparisons though, if anything it is the reverse.

>>2517816
Alright fair enough. Sorry if I made you uncomfortable asking those questions.

For what it's worth I think your work is pretty strong and while there are similarities in style, your stuff definitely has its own flavour and is different in my eyes.

I would just ignore the comparisons for now or put up with it for a bit. Given how far your work has come in the past couple years I'm guessing that in another few your stuff will be very separate from his and the comparisons will stop.

>>2517816
Yo I had no negative intentions when recommending him.
You're stuff is good no doubt and while there are similarities, but if you look at both of your instagram galleries you can definitely see that there's a difference.
Now if you're really worried about pulling away from him, focus on what you like the most about painting. In the post where you talk about skin tone and color, you say something about most of the painting happening within the light. If you're really interested in that, maybe play with different compositions and lighting setups. Play with how light affects skin and the translucency of it, maybe models of different ethnicities, or perhaps play with color relationships. You could look at John Asaro for color vibrancy. Maybe look at Steve Huston's paintings for compositions and poses as well as lighting structures.

Again I didn't mean to have negative intention. But i wouldn't count out Ben. He's successful at what he does, aka he's done all of the hard work. So if you are struggling with something, don't be hesitant to look at his work because of the person he was, rather look at it because of the artist he is.

I appreciate that you love Shinkawa and kim jung gi but if you really want to draw like them you need to learn to really draw. Practice construction and drawing from reference. Everything you draw is lacking informed decisions and therefore lacking detail that would make it as interesting to look at as the aforementioned artists' work. Not to mention the lacking accuracy that denotes an inexperienced artist behind the work. Drawing from reference can be tedious but you're going to end up doing it anyway. If you make a conscious effort you can get through it sooner.

Look pretty good. You can reduce how many values you are using though. Like within the lights (or within the darks), there is a fair bit of variation and you can say the same form changes with smaller value steps.

All that warm bounce light i the shadow looks a bit weird too since whatever object it is coming off of isn't included in the painting.

Not bad. I think you have a couple things working against you at the moment.

1) You are using too many values in the light. Look at the chest for example, in the ref it is nearly one flat mid grey tone. In yours you have a mid grey tone, and then a light grey plastered on top of it. Look at his biceps too and you have the same problem. Too many values in any given section.

2) You are using a hard and textural brush everywhere. Look at the ref, most of the skin is smooth except perhaps where there is some body hair. I would use a brush without texture in areas where there is no texture. And look too at the points on the body where it turns from light to shadow, there is a soft smooth gradient that happens. But in yours you paint it choppy and hard. Try using a softer brush on those areas, or using the smudge tool or mixer brush.

3) There are lots of small inaccuracies in the shapes and values and overall gesture/pose. I think this is a result of rushing it. Try slowing down just a little bit and going for a greater degree of accuracy.
>>
>>2518859
Thank you! Yeah I see what you mean. I'll work on all of those things. That's really insightful about the too-many values thing. Sometimes I assume I have to use all of them.

Everything is viewed from a different perspective. Like none of the forms are sitting in space properly in relation to each other. Try to break down things into their most basic forms like cylinders and cubes, and then get the angles on them all right before going into detail like this.

Her gesture too is really weird. Have you tried getting into the pose yourself with a broom in front of a mirror? You should pretty quickly see how you got things wrong.

Get more values in there, especially darks. There should be some more occlusion going on and probably the shadows in general can be knocked down a value.

Start breaking down the form into small planes and specifying all the form changes rather than just airbrushing in an approximation.

Throw in a background tone and some eyes, and start playing with edge work more.

When in doubt, use reference.

wtf anon are you even trying?? her features are slanted as fuck, it almost looks like you drew her on a slanted surface and you didn't realise or you slanted the scan on purpose to present the drawing this way but what kind of idiot would do that right??
study the fundamentals, it looks like you have potential if you manage to fix this problem with the placement of her features and all that

The eyebrow needs to be higher, and the middle area below the eye needs to get lighter, just like the eyelid area above.

Then at far right (or her left) it needs to get darker.

I feel obligated to respond to you again with a serious reply since I was a dick before.
First flip your drawing and you will see the imperfections on it... but I think you already know about them, specially since your tried to pull the trick angled pic of a drawing to mask the mistakes.

In general this drawing looks pretty, and it will look good to non artists, and your boyfriend's sister is going to like it for sure. As an artist, though, I can't say this is good on a technical level.

The features on her face are all a little misplaced, with the most glaring mistake being the eyes/eyebrows: her right eye is too far next to her cheek and her left eye is too close to the middle of the face giving the impression that it's the opposite eyebrow that goes too far to the middle of the face, as the other one barely covers the eye.
These little mistakes, and the fact that you don't use a lightsource and a variation of values to convey the form of her face shows you don't really think of your drawings in 3 dimensions, and that is what you are lacking to actually be good.

Again, it's a nice drawing for a hobbyist, but if you are taking this seriously you should look into the fundamentals again, study shapes, forms, values. Study anatomy of the face and body again, try drawing the same face from different angles and all that.
>>
>>2519250
I like it. The use of light in the skies and the realism in the details is what you should do more, if you ask me.

>>
>>2519812
Careful of your proportions and shapes. I would also put in a background tone so you have a better sense of relative values to compare rather than working on top of a harsh white.

As for fur, it is the same as anything else basically. Squint your eyes and get the main colour masses in. You can go over with either a texture brush or a small brush and manually put in some fine texture, but that is the icing on the cake and really you just need the main shapes and values in correctly.

Looks like you're trying to be Beksinski. The berries look like they're rather glossy in appearance from the highlights you've put on them, so maybe for the front ones add in a bit of bouncelight/reflections of the acorn cap to tie the two together.

Hi. How do I achieve that kind of luminosity as is on the right painting (made by Anthony Ryder)? What I did was a grisaille, then glazed it and after that, I applied more opaque color (it's done with oils). It is not anatomically correct, ear looks like shit as do the glasses and eyes are missing form as well. How do I into painting beards and eyeglasses? Also if you have any tips, they are most welcome. Maybe put some orange on the planes below nose, chin and eyebrows too?
