Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I think you want to work on the larger form of the hair with as few lines as possible. Save defining the hair for the later stages with value.

Every thing looks like it was copied pretty accurate to me. I dont see any big problems other than that torso seems oddly thin and straight.

I suck though so my advice is probably off.

I dont think harsh feedback is the best, so asking for some 1 to rip open you butt hole isnt good. It is hard to give feedback though as it doesn't look like much time and effort was put into this.

Every thing looks ok enough but if there was one thing that could really improve fast it is the line quality. these strokes look short, choked up and hard. The way I like it, but not for my sketches.

It seems to me that the composition overall is good, and you did a real nice job on the reflected moonlight hitting the water.

Ways you might be able to improve it would be in my opinion playing more with color temperature and contrast.

For example, I can see that you are showing the light hitting the grass/buildings/bridge and etc., but I think because the values and color temperature are somewhat close I can't fully appreciate the effect.

I can't say I am an expert, but maybe try making the vegetation closer to an orange/yellow so the blue hue of the moon really shines through.

Also, feel free to go darker and more vague with the buildings, as you would probably want the viewer to focus more on the bridge and moon.

Last thing I would suggest would be to kick up the brightness for both the moon and bridge (which I should mention you did a good job on).

Just my two cents.

One from the previous beginner thread. I'm working on my draftsmanship and trying to convey a sense of liveliness in the drawing. I don't think I got the gesture down as well as I could have, and I wasn't consistent with my rendering. Any other advice aside from that is much appreciated, though.

Another one from the previous beginner thread. I didn't get the likeness down as comfortably as I would have liked to, and I think that using a measuring grid would have been a better idea. I'm more happy with the rendering in this one, and I took a stab at getting the hair laid in.

something just need to be simplified if youre drawing from far away, this means that as you go further out your silhouette is more and more important.

so just block your shapes in. This is especially through in your case since youre letting the brush itself do the work and create strands.

look. Negative space. You show know that bump to the right on her left hip ends after the arm comes in. But if you look at your your bump ends way further and the arm is still above.

Now multiply not looking at your negative space a couple more times and you can easily fix all these things.

Then thers the issue of just looking at angles properly, for example the hand on the left, her right hand has a 50-60 degree angle towards the bottom. Yours more at like 75-80. These are easy fixes if youre just looking.

Good luck, love you too.
Read the sticky.

I'm not familiar with drawabox, but the best way to start learning figure drawing is to focus on gesture. Focus on seeing the figure as a whole and trying to capture its action. This method will stop you from stiffening your poses and eventually you can build anatomy atop the gesture.

Pretty damn good anon, some mild problems though. The way you've drawn his pupils gives him crazy looking eyes. Darken the cornea and add a highlight. The ball of his nose is angled downwards but you've drawn it exposing too much of the bottom plane and nosrils. Ears are also a little too small.
I love the way you captured his lips though. I struggle with that shit but you made it look effortless.

I'm in the middle of Steve Hustons course on heads, and at this point he says to get the form of the head to be as boxy as possible so the perspective is clear and that it can be rounded out later, but I feel like I'm getting something wrong every time. These ones are from imagination.

Anyone care to point it out?

On another note, they all look samey: a masculine adult. If I wanted to make a woman or a kid, how would I change it? This may get answered later in the course but I'm just really anxious for feedback.

Nothing worse than building on a mistake for a long time and having to go back and retrain yourself.

Loomis in Head/Hands goes over the subtle differences between genders and age but in short, womens features are much more rounded than mens are.
>>
>>2507917
draw a box first if that helps.
You made the face boxy enough, but the cranial mass is totally round, there isn't even a hint of corners in any of those heads.

Draw a box with head proportions, then go through and add the features and construct it further.

Having some trouble memorising what I have taken too doing in the last couple of days is just looking for those wireframes of heads and other body parts and memorising them, I think ive got the basics of the head down, im just wondering If I should be creating brand new wireframes from my mind and possibly getting them wrong or should I be using a reference and making my own wireframe of that reference then try doing it again without looking at the reference so I get more accuracy? im mostly loss as I can draw with my eyes REALLY well but am absolutely shite at drawing anything beyond a sketch from imagination, Like I can picture something in my head really easily its just that when my finger comes to paper it doesnt turn out as intended, so I figure i just have to memorise more stuff from real life? and I will slowly get better at drawing without reference of any kind? my main goal at the moment is to get bodies down pat so I can quickly draw a figure in rough perspective, and be able to shade it ect by eye.
>>
>>2507961
Drawing from imagination is hard and to me it just seems like a way to feel discouraged when you're first starting out

I honestly think drawing from multiple references is a fine way to get your skills and visual library up

If you feel like you're getting a lot out of challenging yourself by not having a reference then go for it but you might find it harder seeing the mistakes you made

Mostly just repetition. Your eyes will pick up on more subleties over time and your hand will get better transferring it onto the paper.

Many people here disagree, but I think it's a good idea to mindlessly copy actual drawings (would be hand drawings in your case) frequently to understand how artists interpret 3D information onto the paper. That doesn't mean you should neglect drawing from life though.

I started painting around 2 years ago because /ic/ told me my drawings were shit and they were right, after learning, practicing and improving you will find out that you can no longer grow here and you need to start circle jerking with the good artists and learn from them, you will make it anon, keep practicing.

I still come here every now and then, im no Tehmeh but this place made me improve a lot.
>>
>>2508696
When you say "can no longer grow here" do you mean the beg thread or /ic/ in general?
>>
what should i draw when i'm just like, "i wanna grind out some practice"

I sometimes do figure drawing, but aside from that? What are the basic exercises to do in spare time?
>>
is it fine if I do my 30 second gestures like this? I've seen artists like villpu to have this rhythm in your lines with 3 different types of line strokes. I tried this but I can't wrap my head around it without doing this basic stick figure type stuff.
>>
What are some cheap traditional materials for a beginner to start with?

Or should I just bite the bullet and buy a graphics tablet?

>>
>>2508735
That's not gestures though, that's stick figures. Gestures don't have to represent specific limbs, and it's even better if you can find relationships between parts of your figure and unify them in a single line.

Remember you're looking for the underlying flow of your figure, not to construct a torso with four limbs and a head.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74HR59yFZ7Y
I was linked this video recently, I find it helps explain it pretty well.

>>
>>2508732
If you wanna practice drawing from life, get a bunch of clutter from your house together and try to draw it while paying close attention to perspective, shapes, and negative space. If you have some time you can throw some shading onto it too. These kind of exercises never hurt.

You can also pick a specific object from your surroundings and try to sketch it in a more detailed fashion. Start with the general form, and try to add detail and shading while remaining wary of stuff like perspective.

Basically draw from life if you're bored, any subject is good and will help improve your understanding of space a lot.

Semi-OT, a starter tablet is around $100 and will give you pretty decent results, I started with one.

So if you're considering going digital at all, start with a cheap tablet and get used to it for a few months before deciding if you want to drop $400-800 for the bigger ones. A large tablet is more of a QoL improvement than an actual boost to your skills anyway.

So do I just throw out the paper after I draw on it or what? Or maybe hole punch it and store the good ones on a binder?

The problem with this is that you don't have a nice pad of paper to push down on when you draw. Though I guess that's easily fixed with a clipboard or something

Okay. I'll bite. Didn't want to upload my gestures until a week into it

I watched Proko, read Hampton and Vilppu on the subject. I did my best to not draw the contours, but drawing the flow instead and tried with as little lines as possible to get the idea of the pose across. Still everything looks off and I can't tell why because I've been doing it for so long. Anyone provide any insight?

Not exactly. I've filled two sketchbooks so far in the past year or so
>inb4 you're not gonna make it, I fill two sketchbooks A WEEK etc. etc.
I'd like to continue drawing without worrying about the cost of materials and am considering purchasing a tablet, but its a very expensive purchase for me. I just wanted some advice on cheap materials people use.

But anyway, I've figured it out. Here is some math:

Standard Tablet: ~$100
Most warranties are 2 years, meaning the tablet should last around 3 years with good maintenance
Pack of Ballpoint Pens (or Pencils): ~$2-3
Sketchbook: ~$7 for 100 sheets/200 pages
Copier paper: $5 for 500 sheets

Now assuming I continue drawing at my current rate (200 sheets/400 pages per year) It will take me ~20 years of continuous drawing at this rate to match the price of the tablet, using the copier paper.

Copier paper (at least, until I get better) it is. I fished out an old clipboard. And a binder for documenting progress.

Thanks >>2508759
>>
>>2508831
A stack of printer paper on a clipboard is what I use, but you can make a pad out of printer paper by just brushing some rubber cement along one side. You can have loose sheets bound into a book for a modest fee at many office supply stores (tableguy did this).
>>
>>2508735
>>2508749
Okay so I tried loosening up and only focusing on the motion of the figure using as little lines as possible. I filled up several sketchbook pages but all of my gestures look extremely disproportionate. This is the problem, I cant draw something proportionate without thinking about drawing the contours and such. But when I think about the contours I get a stiff pose. I don't know what to do.

The hands, feet, and head are fucked intentionally, I wasn't trying to focus on them. What I am trying to get right is the gesture, construction, and anatomy of the torso, arms and legs. The right is my chicken scratch construction, and the left is the "final product". So fuck me up senpai.

if you haven't gotten confident making an accurate image with clean and confident lines first, 'chicken scratches' will always look bad, but then you don't see any true chicken scratching in professional works since it's intentional, it would be more or a textured line or repeated long lines if it's a sketch. as opposed to where the lines often interfere with the readability of the image. also messy chicken scratched lines can make you see the image as better than it is by cheating details and shapes that you can't define, so it's best to get out of the habit. draw with your arm/lock your wrist/fingers and it shouldn't happen

>>

You need to slow way down when drawing this kind of stuff. Take the time to actually measure. I'm not talking eyeball "this is probably fine" measure, actually measure. Either hold the pencil up or use internal landmarks of the body to judge. The legs are tiny and so is his lower body in general, and you are chickenscratching like mad.

Slow down, measure, draw it again. You have some work ahead of you with figures, but as long as you keep drawing them and keep asking here or looking into stuff yourself when you know something is wrong, you will get there.

Commit to relaxing yourself before you start drawing. There are so many ways to have fun while drawing, but you need to remember that if you're two to three months into it and still hate the process of drawing, it might not be for you. Once you begin to love the process of drawing it makes things almost exponentially easier the more you draw.

Anon i could be wrong but the legs are not the same length and the neck looks like it must be cranked forward. I think you were thinking about the distance on the ground and that the feet shouldn't be even because they are different distances. How ever that is not so, unless the other leg is standing on some thing and in which case it should be bent and not streight.

The head looks a little too far forward to be comfortable and the pose seems very static. The hips, shoulders and spine are all straight, so he looks stiff.

Aight I did a 10 min over paint.

My thoughts:

Design:
It looks sorta like a cow skull or definitely some type of herbivore other than the bottom jaw and teeth. The jaw is too thin and the teeth dont have form or exhibit function. The front and back of the skull are impossibly small and again dont match the bottom. Horns are also made from a different material than the rest of the skeleton so it shouldn't look like it is the same. Look at real animals and think why they have that form.

Fundamentals:
The shadow shapes need to be stronger and more consistent and the whole thing other than the eye and background lack a range of values. I think if you draw out the shadow shapes and figure out where you darkest values are and fill them in first will help strengthen t he drawing. It will also give it some hard edges and clear separation. It wont help it look photo real, but it will help it read better and look more solid.

That is all i could think of and if you dont agree just ignore me. I dont paint yet and have no exp in it.

You've made the classic mistake of making the features too big. If you really look at a person their eyes are quite small. The shadow of the brow/socket give the illusion that they're bigger + most people emphasize eyes as they are the natural focal point of the face.

Two things I'm noticing:

1. It looks like she's (?) supposed to have glasses, but the way you drew them doesn't work. The nose and ear parts are there, but the lenses aren't. Either draw the lenses (remember, they won't warp around to the side of her face like you seem to have thought here) or get rid of the glasses.

2. Her balance looks off, like she would fall backwards if she weren't holding on to the machine. Only having one leg visible also looks strange here, as does the lack of an apparent pelvis. Scrap everything below her shirt, add a pelvis, and then draw two legs that she can properly stand on.

Aside from that stuff, not bad at all.

The tilt of the head is wrong. In the reference pic you can can see the bottom plane of her jaw.
Due to foreshortening her face isn't separated into perfect thirds, each third moving upwards from the jaw should progressively become shorter.
The features also wrap around the head, in your drawing they look as if they exist on a flat axis.
You've drawn the cranium much to small.
The lips in your drawing lack volume and look flat.

The construction of the palm looks wonky in a lot of these, especially those on the bottom right. Make sure you draw a really consistent and solid shape
In none of these have you indicated the joints of the palm which moves in tandem with the fingers.
You've drawn the thumb extending out from the side of the palm when it's actually slightly beneath it.
I feel you need to work on your structure as a lot of these hands feel flat and linear. As difficult as it may be, try some more extreme angles so that you can show the way all the parts overlap which makes it clear they exist in 3D space.
Also, work on your linework. It isn't terrible but it feels very sketchy in a lot of places making it hard to read the image.

>>
>>2510622
Not a bad gesture drawing, put in some ground tones and don't bother with so much construction on the head, it's not necessary when the thing you're drawing is right there in front of you.

Also people generally have more fingers than that.

How often should one do a drawing based out of your imagination?

alot of goals in drawing is being to draw what you want with out a still life right? so how often would you do that?
>>
>>2510726
Why are none of the lines in your bottle parallel?

I'm not even trying to point out a mistake I'm genuinely curious to know how you did it.
>>
>>2510731
It depends what your objective is.

Drawing from imagination develops different skills t b h, but you first need technical knowledge for it to work well.

I would say to stick primarily with studies until you feel confident, then figure out a ratio that works for you. There's no hard number, whatever keeps you engaged with your art is what's most important.
>>
>>2510747
I don't really know much about how I went about it. I just tried my best to draw what I see. Do I need parallel lines? I feel so stupid about not knowing how to construct parallel lines.

your feet have no form/ escalation ramp
Look at the amount of height a feet gains and how it gains it.

Youre at the level where you start thinking about really getting the details. So REALLY PAY ATTENTION THE THE LITTLE BUMPS ON THE BODY. For example, look at the bump that should be right before the pelvis.
>>

>>
>>2511017
ok look, if you want any help from anyone for proportions dont go calling it "its", is it a boy or a girl? Either way, you didnt use form, and thats the problem ( or maybe you just dont have reference). And im doubting you actually aren't allowed to.

If its a girl: hips and tits, 8 heads is too much
if its a guy: more muscle definition more squarishness.

Whatever it is: You cant take a picture at an angle it scews everything.
>>
>>2511023
female figure.
I was told it has to be 8 heads.
Will find reference picture, thank you.
Was going off of one that I had already drawn from life drawing, but it was still pretty crap.

>>
>>2510984

>>
>>2511028
it honestly sounds like you have someone teaching by reading a book for beginners. 8 heads for a woman is massive. Heck, 8 heads for a man is "ideal" but I doubt its more than 50% of man honestly. Think about midgets/babies/small mans do you really think they reach 8? Same for women.
>>
>>2511034
when people refer to THE right arm, think about the characters right arm. I was talking about THE right arm being way too big/long.

Do yourself a favor and do these 2 things, put your feet to your arm, look at how much space it takes, then wrap your arm around your head, look at how much space it takes.
