Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

Also guys it's been 100 days and site's looking pretty good though it and the threads could be better. In the first few threads and before the site went up there was a lot of ideas and discussion and things we could add or shouldn't have. Maybe every 100 days we should ask people to share any other ideas they have, things they don't like about the site/threads, things we could add or take away etc.

It's all anonymous so feel free to share ideas, and if enough of us agree on things then no doubt Lava will bow to the people's will, like that one scene in Gladiator.

100 days ago I was just drawing random shit with no clear direction. I am slightly less haphazard in my practice now, and the topic challenges have been great for kicking me out of my comfort zone. The topic challenges also make it less likely that I'll polish up a drawing, but that's less of an issue until I'm done grinding the really basic shit I'm doing now.

It took me until around day 60 to stop aimlessly drawing/studying whatever I felt like at the time.
I decided to start from scratch and read some of the beginner books properly.

After right side of the brain I got a little carried away and started scott robertson, draw a box, loomis and hampton. I dropped fun with a pencil straight away, hated it. I'm still slowly working through the others and fell into the habit of doing those line exercises every day.

I got a bit burnt out on fundamentals so for the last few weeks I spent more time just relaxing and painting from ref/doing value studies; it's what I love and it made me start enjoying art again. I need to go back to studying the basics soon but I'm having fun.

Months ago I would have never been able to do this, I was super lazy, but LAS gave me discipline and I can already see that I'm improving. I've draw more these three months than all I did the entire past year.
I also like the community, even if sometimes the threads got flooded with shitposting I think is great and fun. I don't care about winning LAS 1, I just want to see us drawing and gitting gud each passing day together.

Neither stifles any growth, they both need practice if you want to be a truly great animator; traditional will give you the best drawing foundation without any special trickery, and digital will seriously help you when you want to make your own short films (you do NOT wanna tackle trad animation alone).

my mum got committed to a mental hospital 4 days ago, she was having severe audio and visual hallucinations, yesterday the doctor phoned after she tried to escape the hospital for the second time, she has now been officially sectioned long term.

Which means i have been extremely busy as i am now the one in charge of making sure me and my brother don't end up homeless, and looking after our two cats, and dealing with the debt she left behind.

so with all that's going on I got tired and fell asleep.

thanks m8, it's from an animation called Shirobako, all about the characters going to work at an animation studio

It's pretty good, has a few episodes where the animator chick has to really grind to try her skill level up, but that means her work pace slows, and so she needs to learn to balance speed and skill, etc.

Also has this, a dance to keep your arms and shoulders loose when drawing. I know for a fact that JMGN does it three times a day.

Shirobako was so motivating and informative (as much as you could through an anime). I loved that it focused on the productivity/effort aspect of creative work compared to the talent, prodigal focus of other similar anime, or TV/film in general, really.

This is just a good show for artists. Only two of the major characters are really artists, but I think the struggles of the other three and the supporting characters are easy to relate to.

Also, it makes it seems like making anime is fun and not suicide-inducing, so you feel better about pirating it.
