FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

Think I got crits more just because the eval guy stopped on me and we were waiting for a few days to see if they'd post or not. alm0nde, when I looked through your submissions one thing I noticed is that if you start studying something, like legs, or feet, you usually do it for a day or two and then abandon it, and then sometimes come back to it weeks later because you still can't get it right. So my suggestion would be to actually focus on a single subject, and when you study, study that one thing until it you've properly grasped and memorized it.
As to your latest submission, there are some things that look off about the person. First thing, the face looks quite manly. I don't really have a recommendation on how to make it more feminine, as I'm not that great with faces myself, perhaps some other anons can suggest. Second thing is the pose, it looks a little odd. Her left arm seems to be too high up, so maybe it would be better if you referenced it some more (pic related), especially if it's supposed to be a bit more polished piece.

You're right that I need to study longer. I've been away from studying only two weeks and I haven't retained shit. As for finished pieces, I don't do them because I draw too slowly and would rather put time into studying. My end goal is animation so I panic a little about learning quickly so I can get on with what I actually want to do.

I generated the graphs for user's submission times for everyone. I cut out everyone who had less than 20 submissions. Sorted on name.

The way the graph works:
y-axis is amount of submissions,
x-axis is hour of day. 0 on x-axis means all submissions submitted between 00:00 and 00:59 (start of day), and point 23 being submissions in the last hour before deadline.

alm0nde, I'd say even more perspective studies would be a good idea. Even if you want to be an animator you'll still be having objects and characters move along the z axis / further and closer with depth, so it'll be useful. Not to mention it helping you turn forms in space better.

Your lines could definitely use work too, but don't be afraid to do a messy sketch on one layer and then do smoother confident lines on one above that, using the faint messy one as a basic guide. Even guys with beautiful lines like Bumskee and Catbib do it like that.

I'd personally like to see more color and painted works but since you're aiming for animation I don't suppose it's that important, so spend that time focusing on gesture and weight instead. Weight is overlooked a lot here for general figure drawing and such, but if you're animating someone or something then showing how light or heavy they move can really help make things convincing. I also suggest you listen to and study the pros as much as you can, especially the traditional ones. You might just want to animate qt anime waifus but knowing the traditional principles will still help.

I see you've started studying Hampton and your figures have turned out a lot better since then. Keep up with that. Secondly, you do a lot of gestures, but that practice isn't translating into your drawings. I'd say to do maybe 15-20 gestures for practice, then build a few of them into full studies. 40 gestures per session is overkill and seems to be more for your comfort zone than practice.
Your line control is sketchy, but precise. Do a few line exercises to build up more confidence, sketchy lines are still fine for gestures and feeling out forms.
The perspective box figures is a good way to practice, but I think you need to do a few from reference. The perspective of the figure doesn't always follow the perspective of the box. If you're unsure, draw the character from a front/side view, break that into boxes, then build those boxes in perspective from your desired angle. And I'm not sure what your experience with basic perspective is, but if you haven't, you should study that alongside figure drawing.

Would also love to see a background somewhere, or really something other than a posed figure. Work up to that. A full drawing here and there would help flex your creative muscles.

I see that you are focusing 100 % on studying human anatomy, that's great and I'm sure you're going to get better at it that way, but it already seems like your comfort zone.
Why don't you try to do some finished piece? Draw some character in an interesting pose and go all the way, don't leave it as a sketch. Draw a samurai, a sailor, a dancer!
Also, you have to draw backgrounds. It's all figures. Try making poses in an interesting setting following the perspective. Two figures talking in a bar counter, someone walking in front of a shop... you could do these little compositions paying attention on how the space works. Do it, for example, having in mind just three planes: foreground elements, middle and background.
Last but not least: try some colors! you are doing the studies digitally know, so you have no excuse! a simple sketch will look 100 times better just by experimenting a little with one skin tone and It's shadow, so try it out until you want to try more complex things.

I'm borderline dumb and forgot to move over the code that actually tells people that their submission is going into the tribunal. I'm going to push it all back a day so people get a chance to defend themselves.

Oh and here's how the system works:

Every day at 00:00:00 it checks the reports for submissions from the last X days (currently the last 3 days) to see if any submissions have enough reports to get sent to the tribunal. The 3 days thing is to help minimize trolling and it doesn't mean that they're beyond reproach if the submission is more than 3 days old cause you can still email me if you catch someone cheating.

After a submission gets sent to the tribunal the submission's artist will have a notification on the dashboard where the submit usually is letting them know that they can go add a defense for their pending case. They have until 00:00:00 to add a defense because after that it'll show up for everyone to vote on. Voting stays open for 24h and the verdict will be posted at the end of the day. I'm thinking I should add an announcement for the tribunal results or roll them into the elimination announcements since they happen at the same time.

Anyway, sorry for the delays. I'm going to work on adding more topics then I'll start working on the competitions. After that it's stats/leaderboards/user profiles/badges/fun stuff

I actually stopped doing gestures all together, because I think I did too many for too long and I got burned out on them. I'll start ramping up on them again. I definitely agree that my gestures aren't showing in my drawings. It's funny that you mention lines, because I found out I have carpal tunnel, so now I'm pretty much focusing all on my arm movement. Kind of embarrassed that my critique day comes when I just post circles... I don't have much experience with perspective, besides the perspective boxes. I realize that sometimes I ignore them, and still need to study perspective. I've been hesitant to start on a full drawing just because I feel like I have so much to learn on figures.
