You know, in all my searches, I've never been able to find reliable reference for people swinging swords. I have a friend who practices HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) and after joining him in a few classes, all I can see when I look at photos of people holding swords is how clearly they have no idea what they're doing.

I believe Meissonier was a huge inspiration for Howard Pyle (above). Meissonier was the artist that every history painter was talking about during Pyle’s formative years, but he’s still in eclipse among most American art historians, unfortunately.
