Nose bro, what's your blog?
Decided to randomly do a composition. I have no idea what I'm doing, no sketch, no real reference, there is one picture I'm using but its mainly just for inspiration rather than actual referencing. I'm basically painting stuff as I go to see what the picture becomes. A pretty enjoyable exercise.
>>2409190
xnosebro.tumblr.com is the one for 4chan. Give me 15 minutes ill post something new for you.
fuck me!
do you ever get so frustrated that things aren't turning out how you want them to that you just scribble finish?
I did the hand-drawing exercise in Bert Dodson's Keys to Drawing (pg. 17). The base of the thumb I didn't draw correctly and so the whole thumb came out looking too big. To get the right proportions I guess I should just restate lines, as the book so far doesn't touch much on the subject.
I was wondering if I should learn some things about drawing proportionally correct before I continue with the book and perhaps other fundamentally necessary things.
Also, should I alongside this book also go learn from drawabox or should I just wait till after I'm done with this book? Any other books I should be working on as well alongside with this one?
Happy to receive critique and other comments.
>>2409223

can somebody explain what kind of perspective grid/lines should i use when drawing a scenery viewed from up to down?
any tutorials out there?
>>2409391
I don't think a response of "reeks of autism" counts as critique...
>>2409405
Nice job so far, but work on always checking your angles so that your forms don't look wonky.
Honestly, for beginners i struggle between recommending either the skull or full head to learn first. The skull can help you understand how the head works, but construction the entire head form is a lot simpler if you just look up videos from Proko or just any good resource.
Also, there isn't really a need to worry to much about shading right now. I would rather work on getting better lifework and forms at first.
>>2409241
Wait what old driver? I also always had this problem ever since I started drawing but I thought this was a limitation of the digital tools.
Could you please give a link?
>>2409411
You hardly need a grid for a simple piece such as that.
You just draw a big box with a POV from above, that's those stairs. Morph that wall edge a tiny bit to give that minor panoramic effect but you don't need a grid since it's the only object that is morphed.
Everything else can easily be eyeballed because it's partially visible and on the edges.
Also, there is a vanishing point below the drawing in this one, because there is vertical perspective. Check out "3 point perspective", I believe it's called. It's very simple especially if there's just a couple things there.
>>2409413
come on dude.

Alright, have this then. This is my most recent steam locomotive pic where I had refs and rulers. (So yeah, while the first pic I posted here WAS a year ago, I often go months between posting train pics) I think the shading might be the worst part.
How did I do?
>>2409513
anon are...are those nipples at the front?
>>2409520
They're called "buffers"
>>2409513
I can see where the autism comment came from, if this is some sort of sexualized Thomas the Tank Engine fanart, but for criticism of the artwork, here goes:
First of all, if you are going to shade the dark areas, I suggest rendering them in greyscale instead of using hatching. The hatch lines are inconsistent and blend in with the linework, especially around the wheels and piston bars. Get a set of maybe 3 different pencils, one for thin linework, one for light greys, and one for dark greys and blacks. Then fill the spaces with solid grey so that there aren't strips of white in the shaded regions. This will make the shadows more distinct from the details.
The perspective is slightly off from the angles that the front part of the train make and the back part. Get a ruler and recheck the lines. Use 2 point perspective so that the orthogonal parts of the train have the right angle.
For the background, use lighter lines or don't define the edges as sharply. For example the clouds look like nearby solids instead of distant patches of light tones.
anything seem off?

People don't know if they are a beginner or not, self assessment being very subjective. If someone was posting finished masterpieces in the beginning thread just to troll everyone, that would be one thing.

>>2409593
Go to the 250 box challenge, in that page he has a short guide on drawing boxes which includes 3 pt perspective made really really easy.
Also do the ghosting lines exercise again and get it right.
>>2409593
Draw light perspective lines all the way to the origin. Then bold in the parts of the line to define the edges of the box. Use a ruler.
>>2409596
You aren't a standard for anything. Stop posting.
>>2409596
So having an arbitrary subjective amount of skill higher than some other random guy counts as a beginner? You should put some samples of your own work in the OP to form a rubric and warn people that you will mouth off to them and be an asshole if they don't qualify according to your self-appointed criteria.

The face is actually a big issue... not necessarily it's existence, but I don't think it's in line with the perspective of the train... the eyelids are facing us pretty much straight on, but I'm fairly certain the should not be.
I agree with >>2409550 your hatch marks are messy, so a different shading technique might be better until you can work up your hatching skill... probably practice that on simpler compositions.
Shading in general needs to be in more than just the darkest areas... you're not really utilizing it to give your drawing form.
Trees and clouds could have used some reference on your part... symbols.
adding some amount of texture and content to the foreground of the image would make it look more polished.
>>2409654
Way too many contour lines on the figure on the right, it should be kept to (in my opinion) one at each joint and 1 inbetween the joints, just so you can get a feel for it as a 3D object without going over the top.
Also try having a lighter touch and sharpen your pencil more. If you do a light block in of all the shapes and then darken parts to give more emphasis the figure will look a lot less flat. As it is now the lines are all way too thick over all of the figure. To fix long body just draw and draw and draw. Doing the bargue plates will help you understand proportions and the negative space/shape relation of lines to other lines
>>2409667
Forgot pic. Note the feint contour lines on the arms

>Could you please show me what you mean by that?
not him and I'm too lazy, but I'm guessing what he means is drawing the lines all the way to the horizon.
Parallel lines will have the same vanishing point on the horizon. Go all the way there lightly, and then just darken the lines where the actual box is.
>>2409689
Basically do this but with you pencil by hand or with the help of a ruler.
As a side note I might put on a tripcode just to allay confusion when I get people accusing me of being someone else or whatever.

If you're doing a really simple cartoon, maybe.
A big part of what color appears pale is relative to the colors around it and what lights it.
This lady's skin is light purple and not a super bright value either, but she looks pale and white because of her surroundings. If you painted girl in your example the same tone she'd look freaky and purple.

>>2410137
Can I get a critique on the actual drawing?
>>2410176
It's not good, I would suggest you work on everything and start at a lower level or with less ambitious designs and ideas.
Your anatomy is all wrong, the person is off balance/wonky, everything looks flat and dimensionless, the folds on the clothing doesn't make much sense, there no light source so the shading seems impossible and unnatural; there's probably more wrong with it but I'm just a beginner so what do I know.
>>2410176
its slightly wrong pretty much everywhere so i dont think anyone wants to bother, within being terrible however, I do like it ( excluding the 8 weapons).
the maint point si would address are, reference for folds, body flat, neck too thick, jaw unevent, hand are disgusting ( use form)
, perspective is off( wheres is your horizon, how far are you from the figure? weapons dont affect the belts ( they go under so the belts have to go around, etc.)
Stop doing such complexe stuff and just try to learn a bit of form. (itll help with your shadows!)
how do you know you have done gesture right?
>>2410190
I didn't even know about this board months ago
>>2410250
You learned something when doing them.
>>2410250
When you look at the drawing and can tell where the weight is being placed, as well as what the general pose is
>>2410124
Jaw, eyes, and skull shape are asymmetrical.
The clothing has no folds and is shaded with a flat pillow shading that looks unnatural.
Contour edges on the clothes are really wiggly and don't flow. Then there are straight lines such as the shirt buttons which stand out as mechanical.
The weapons look like they were copy-pasted from some source and look inconsistent with the body.
The anatomy is misshapen, especially in the shoulders, elbows, and knees. His limbs seem too long and skinny.
The shoes are just lazily mirrored.
On top of it, the design is really clashing. He looks like Prince Charming in Napoleonic dress regalia, but he's covered in ammo bandoliers and straps and extra weapons. It's way too cluttered and doesn't convey a plausible character.
I'm tired of these threads how exactly can I tell when I'm ready to graduate from being a beginner and in these threads I just want to be good

so I get how to practice gesture
I can practice real life drawing
I know to get away from symbol drawing
I can practice perspective too
(don't assume I'm good at any of those but I know how to practice them)
but I just don't get how to practice construction, or the 'building blocks'
I read loomis, I know that the blocks are the shapes of things
but how do I actually practice using them!
for example, if I just draw a gesture pose then construct around it, I don't feel like I'm really getting construction at all and it's kind of wasting my time
Same if I draw one of Loomis' cartoon characters, sure I'm copying his construction but it feels so lame
how do I practice construction?

I drew this dwarf for a friend the other day. I haven't drawn almost at all since high school (I'm 28 now) and I'd like to take it more seriously and learn the fundamentals properly.
I think it turned out okay? Should I go after perspective or anatomy first?
>>2410509

It looks like you just drew diaganol lines on random parts of the face.
What light source would cause shade to fall on a person's lips and the inside of their mouth, but not their teeth, and also the bottom of their nose, but not the bridge of their nose, and also their eyebrows, but not their eyes?
Besides that, some of the eyes look decent.

For now, I'm just impressed with myself if I end up drawing something everyday.
It's that bad.
I get down on myself very easily so there'll be days where I just drop it and forget everything good about drawing.
Really, drawing has to be the only thing that I've ever done that asks so much from myself in terms of motivation...

Quit chicken scratching. Do one line, if it's wrong erase it and try it again. All that's going to do is build bad habits.
Tweak your line settings too, they look awful. Use a stabilizer if you're not already.
>>2411322
It's too late. The habit's already built.
I'm not as bad with a pencil or brush (though I'll freely admit I'm just as bad with pens). There's a weekly open figure session I'm joining to help remedy it, among other things. The grind continues ever onward.
I have shitty rendering issues. Halp
>>2411329
Get your proportions right before you even think about rendering. It'll help you immensely.
>>2411327
I chicken scratched for years, and stopped doing it a month after coming here. You just have to force yourself to try and draw a single line even if you're not confident about it. You won't get the confidence to make clean lines until you start trying and failing at it.
New to this board and I've honestly fallen in love with it
>>2411096
I'm just a beginner myself but this might help with features and their positions.
Starting sketch of a new pic. What does it need for improvement before I go any further?

Looks fine. The whole point of the exercise is to get you used to thinking about perspective and vanishing points. There are books you can read about how to draft perspective drawings, but the goal of this drawing it go give you something that you have real experience in. When you read about this later you will have a realization of "this is that thing I have done before" instead of "this is a thing I have never heard about".
There is something wrong with it however, and it's that the center row of boxes use the center as the vanishing point, while the other corner boxes just have vertical lines and two point perspective. But I say just ink it anyway and try again later with a different drawing where you try a different method. Better to have something finished you can look back on and remember the mistakes than an unfinished thing that you don't move on from.
>>2411291
>>2411322
Repeating what he said, get into the habit of using single bold strokes instead of short scratchy lines. Single strokes give the picture flow and make you look confident. You have infinite undo so you can get a perfect line after a few tries. Put a piece of paper on the tablet to help with the texture.

No problem man. I'm glad you are making small improvements over time instead of thinking that you have to get it all at once and become frustrated. Better to have lots of flawed works that lead toward improvement than to have a flawed idea and never improve.
On a side note I'm going to use a trip code from now on, since I have been giving out a lot of advice and I like to see people take those suggestion and post improved pics. Especially when I see them later on the tumblrs I follow and it feels like a community.
Whadafug am I doing wrong with proportions? I follow the guidelines but it still feels like I've got it all wrong. pls halp.
>>2411536
Go back and rewatch the Proko videos or reread Loomis. Draw larger so you can fit everything in the box and give yourself space. Use faint guidelines. Use a ruler to measure the distances. Draw everything as boxes and wedges at first so you are not distracted trying to make the thing look like an expression.
>>2411536
Practice drawing the circle and setting up the midlines again. Pay attention to the relative ratios. If you are drawing as good a circle as you can manage and following the ratios as closely as possible, you should be able to construct the head as Loomis does.

Stop coloring and draw some boxes and basic geometry figures. You need to understand the concept of volume first otherwise you won't get anywhere.

>>2411634
Her nose looks really flat. I also have no idea what that shape near her head is meant to be; an arm?
>>2411689
That cube is also drawn with impossible perspective. The front plane will never be perfectly square unless viewed from front on. Do not study from that image
>>2409119
Can one learn how to draw using the computer as a medium right from the start? I understand that at the beginning you're actually just learning how to control your hand and learning how to see and passing that to the paper rather than what you think you are seeing, but is it possible to do that on a computer? Is there something that traditional mediums offer that a computer and it's 300 programs don't?
>>2411684
Study loomis, anon. You really need to study facial construction.
>>2411759
Some people don't like drawabox but his opinions on traditional medium are pretty spot-on
http://drawabox.com/article/ink
>>2411769
>Literally every Peter Han says is in this article
Seriously, why does Drawabox keeps getting mentioned here? Just download Peter Han's lectures. It's the same thing, but with PH stuff you get more info as to why said techniques are being used.
>>2411759
All you need is just a pencil and cheap printer paper. Do it for a few weeks, maybe months and if you havn't quitted by then you might want to consider changing to digital art.
>>2411771
Drawabox has a reddit where he crits people's work from his site for free, and his site has a lot more structure than some random Peter Han recordings.
So where am I going wrong on this stuff guys?
>>2411779
No perspective and no foreshortening. Double the time you spent on this and start with perspective guides. Stylized doesn't mean you don't need to follow the proper steps.
>>2411442
very nice
much better than your last attempt
edges are much better
>>2411779
you need better fundamentals
your lines need improvement
your grasp of forms is lacking
highly suggest you read vilppu drawing manual
>>2411786
Because the only way you're gonna fix your technical issues is with a pencil and paper. Digital = delivering. Traditional = learning (for the very reason you just pointed out).
But if you can't accept that, then you not only have technical issues, but you also have psychologic issues, and we can't help you on that.
>>2411779
I don't know what the first two are smoken, but this looks good. Since it is a rougher sketch, try outlining a complete and final shape. One specific thing is that her left hand is bigger than her right. Another thing is that the famliar and the wizard look like they exist on two different planes. Your perspectives are fine, it is just that your two figures are not agreeing with eachother. Try placing dolls/figures you have in a position you want and see how they change.
>>2411804
So let me get this straight, the whole point of learning through traditional media rather than digital is psychological, there's no technical aspect you'll be missing if you start digitally?
>>2411779
you did not improve even a little

looks pretty neat if u ask me
Been following some youtube tutorials. Are these alright?
>>2411904
Do you have the photo reference you used for this? It would help to compare to what you were trying to achieve.
Looks pretty good so far. At first glance the nose looks too large, the lower lips are thin and poorly defined, and the eyes are asymmetrical. The strokes of the beard look too wispy and don't define the volumes.
Try doing the rendering now and shading in using the 2 tone technique of Proko. It will help to define your volumes more and make you think about shape. You clearly have experience with the fundamentals so it will just take more practice.
>>2411988
You might want to try to give more effort on your construction. You're focusing too much on skin when you should prioritize the skeleton. Also hands.
Any place for good animal refs? Just googleing skelingtons and random pictures but it's more annoying than I thought it would be.
>>2411779
Looks cute and I see some basic forms. But I see a few areas where you can greatly improve.
First is anatomy. Even though your figure is an exagerated cartoon, you should study more basic anatomy in order to get your ratios and pose right. Block in the character with cylinders and boxes and play with the orientation and gesture of the pieces. It will give your character more volume. Even the big void walker could have his anatomical features more well-defined.
I would work on hands in particular. They are complicated and difficult for many people, but the time spent practicing hands will pay off in the end since they are a very important part of the expression of the character and are mechanically important for poses such as grasping.
Finally, don't use short scratchy lines, even when sketching. It makes the image look unconfident and leads to inconsistant line thickness everywhere. Use flowing bold strokes. It looks like you are working digitally so don't be afraid to try big strokes and undo them if they don't turn out right.
>>2411991
Ye here it is, took a while to find I have batch downloaded the past 2 ref threads so I have like 300 ref pics that I'm plowing through.
I can see that I elongated his face a bit but I rolled with it because pastels are a bitch to erase.
>>2412013
If you want, do one last clean up phase of adding shading to areas you think you can fix, such as the eyebrow and beard. Otherwise just use this piece for practice and try again on a different photo. I like this subject though, there is a lot of expression in his eyebrows.
I attached this comparison to help you see what mistakes you made. It might help you for next time when setting up the underlying structure and getting the ratios right.
>>2412004
It's always strange to see tutorials with half-decent tips, but terrible art that doesn't live up to its own instructions.
>>2411988
in general, be more bold with lines to show anatomy. Hard shadows and light from one direction help here to show form and you can add them during sketching. Bigger breasts hang more and most of the mass is thus lower. Also they are probably badly attached at the upper end, except you go for the pornstar with stuffed silicon tits look.
Lots of small mistakes:
OTR - left breast is a symbol
OTLB - no collarbone, try to make that V sign yourself (grab a book about drawing hands), that waist is unappealing
OTRB - that arm+hand is just terrible
>>2412010

>>2412061
A confident line requires confidence, which requires experience. If you've drawn something 99 times, then the 100th time you draw it, you will be more confident that the first time.
Since you are using layers, just go nuts with the underlying pencil sketch and put lines everywhere. Go back over it in an iterative process and refine the lines that work. After a few layers, you will have the shapes in place and you can boldly stroke the contour lines. Just undo them if they come out wrong until you have the ink lines in place.
This might work, but you will develop your own workflow that you find comfortable. The best way to stop drawing scratches is to just stop yourself from doing it. Force yourself to draw smooth lines and after a while you can break the habit.

>>2412069
No.
>>2412037
Ah thanks a lot. I'll do a little fixing. This one was try to do it without under-sketch and without erasing. That's why I used pastel.
Here's another thing I'd like some opinions on. I'm doing lots of gestures and quick poses lately because I'm very interested in getting into animation. I tried to do a cat leap but I have a shitty low-res ref and I can't figure out what the hell the cat is doing with the front paws, the bend looks weird.
