Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, There is a question thread for that.

Visit the usual "Art book Thread" to find your desired books.

Do not forget to PLEASE RESIZE and crop your images before uploading them. 1kpx is fine.
Before asking "what should I read/view/study/learn," Read the f*cking sticky, it's there for a reason: >>1579290
There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at https://www.reddit.com/comments/46sb9k/

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

So do a lot of you guys have trouble with the 3D space kinda "interrupting" your thought process?

Like, I'm having a lot of trouble keeping faces look consistent at different angles. It's hard to explain, but whenever I try to draw something I've drawn in one angle and try to recreate it in another angle, I can't properly do it because I keep revising the object in a 3D space in my head. I dunno, it's hard to explain. Like, the front view in pic related looks like a different guy in the profile.

Basically, how do I keep shit consistent, is what I'm asking.

>>
>>2412265
I think you just need to study anatomy, lol. That should take care of most of your issues. Look out for how the actual head is 'designed' and then apply it to your animu faces, but anime uses a ton of tricks and avoids certain angles.

Anatomy knowledge has nothing to do with being able to draw form accurately. That anon simply needs to work on his Scott Robertsson boxes.

Anatomy knowledge while important, is subordinate to form drawing and shape design skills. He demonstrates a beginner level ability to visualize form on paper and his shape design skills are also rudimentary.
He specifically stated that he does not understand how to turn forms in space. Yes, he should study anatomy, but his main focus should be to study form building.

Yes actually. You are starting from a place of ignorance and going through the laborious process of training yourself to improve. Try out these proko videos if you haven't already seen them:

Is this from a reference or from imagination? I would use a ruler and a vanishing point to check the perspective on the hallway and shelf, then make sure that your composition works by placing the focal point of the image somewhere near the vanishing point to the eye is drawn to it.

even then, try to use only one, smooth line

eyeball the line, making the motion with your hand until you're confident that you can get the line down with one stroke. even if you mess up, CTRL+z is always a thing.

if you're chickenscratching digitally, chances are, you're chickensctratching when drawing in real life too. so "learning to use a tablet" is no excuse

try some of the exercises on drawabox.com to get a better handle on line control.good luck!

So I'm very much a beginner at drawing, and this is like my fourth or fifth drawing this year, but I think I'm making good progress practising from these examples I have in my book.

How do I get my perspective and proportions right though without relying on a grid? I'm always slightly off doing it by eye from reference.

Stupid question guys, I don't have any art to show currently but what is needed to not be considered symbol drawing? I think in terms of cubes/spheres/etc, and perspective and whatnot. But whenever I draw specific things, they look flat/like "symbols". And I was told you don't even NEED shading to show form.

(yes, im the eye guy, but I seemingly couldn't get a clear answer).

If I draw an eye exactly how I see it without tone. It looks flat as shit, I draw the ball, the lids, everything. And yet I still get lolsymboldrawing

Not bad for a beginner. You're going in the right direction. Keep it up and switch between proko and drawabox. You'll learn elements from one that will help in the other and vice versa.
Also important, dont use short scratchy strokes. Plan you stroke, do a few strokes in the air to get the feel of it, and then make the line in one smooth stroke. If you do build in the line, make sure they overlap so they don't look like fuzzy scratches.

Proko's head drawing playlist will help you a lot. From the pencil lines you just banged in the features without any construction, which is why everything is asymmetrical and out of proportion.

Symbol drawing means you are ignoring the values of the reference photo and instead drawing cartoon contour lines. This happens because your brain sees a human face with eyes, nose, and mouth, and then your eyes turn off and you stop processing visual information and start printing out from your mind what you think those features should look like. You have to force yourself to look at shadows and contour lines as just shapes and not whatever body part they resemble.
Try drawing something like this. It's still human bodies, but doesn't contain many recognizable symbols. You have to measure and render the shapes you see and not just "write" the symbols.

Hello /ic/

I've been going at drawing for about seven months now with abysmal results, I've tried too many times and have given up too many times.

I hope to end it once and for all this time by creating an objective based list to divide and partition the steps in becoming a master into manageable pieces. In other words I'm trying to not set the goal as the peak of the mountain but instead trying to set a small challenge that can be achieved in a week, or a month.

I am also trying to analyze myself, and my motivations. As far as I'm concerned if I forget my motivations I lose my initiative and my will and end up quitting.

Please help me divide the checklist if you feel any areas are so broad as to require more than a week to complete, I've been reading around and looking at books and this is about as far as I got it so far.
>>
>>2413900
delete everything you have, study :
20 gestures, 10 hands, 1 value study, 5 sketches from imagination every day ( 1 h 30) or something simple. You're just started, you're gonna burn out.

In doing all of these keep form in mind.

Also the first thing you should think about is being able to draw what you see since it may interfere with even basic shapes ( you can symbol draw a cube too!)

PS: anatomy isnt important the way you think it is.
>>
>>2413900
Post some of your work. And 7 months isn't that much, you should be happy with even minimal improvements.
>>
>>2413916
not true bro. in 7 months i improved a ton and was doing something like 30 minutes a day.

>>
>>2413817

>>
>>2413834

so basically, do what I have been doing, but thicken lines in some areas/remove in some areas, less lines show more, etc?
>>
>>2413943
how about you do some construction like in the proko videos.
>>
>>2413946

i do do the same thing, i dont use the same drawing shit he does though, I use pencil. But it shouldn't matter. When I do the same thing he does, it looks symbol-y as shit construction wise.

PS He is annoying as fuck making his vids hard to watch.

Instead of drawing basic shapes in perspective, you can also draw real shapes in perspective. Not much difference and more interesting. Lots of objects can be sketched first as more basic shapes anyway.

Gesture is probably pointless; I got only use for it once I tried myself with animating things. Read it, but don't expect magic, because you probably don't have an urgent need for it.

For drawing cute girls doing cute things, learning anatomy is obviously important, but don't be surprised if you get worse while you learn, because you will have a hard time stylizing the real anatomy. You will have to modify the shapes you learn a lot.

As for learning anatomy, just get the basic shapes and important landmarks and refine with time. Don't go with muscles and bones right from the start. The head is probably the least important if you draw manga.

Perspective is easily misunderstood and badly done if you only learn it as something to construct. It's easy to think you grasped it because it looks like geometry, but that is easily your downfall. but maybe somebody else can shed a better light on that.

What seems overlooked but matters is light/shadow. Adding shadows and hilight makes a huge difference and leads you away from terrible outline drawings.

by picture quality i didn't mean the resolution, i actually meant the blurriness of the drawings and everything looks faded

but if the drawings really are like that IRL, then work on rendering smooth transitions from light to dark and increase the darkness of your darkest lines because otherwise the lighting doesn't 'read' as well

There's a lot that can be learned to help improve your landscapes. But, as for a "right" way.. Everyone's different. Someone might find reading countless books on composition and color studies to be tedious, while another would enjoy it.

As a beginner, what I found most useful was to read a little from a composition book, then take a painting I like and try to color pick/see what techniques they used to make it look good to me. How did they establish a focal point? How did they use color, lighting, depth, size to enhance their composition? etc.. Yea, just come up with a personal technique for learning that works for you.

Your front and side view look like the same character to me, though that front view has a oddly wide jaw while the side view is normal.

Remember, with a drawing, you have forms you don't see because it's just an outline, e.g from the front view you don't see the bulge of the cheeks. So when you turn it, the form of the cheek starts showing, because now you're drawing the outline of the cheek, while the other side of the face starts disappearing out of view, and also the back of the head starts showing. So while keeping this in mind, drawing it in another angle while measuring the proportions either by just eyeballing it(experience), or just measuring however way you do it.

Couple this mindset with looking at reference video footage, pausing constantly wherever something looks interesting, of someone's head moving around and observe closely how things look

Depends what you were trying to do. If it helps, the crosshatching/shading feels random and doesn't follow any consistent light nor does it follow the shape of the face, the cigarette is flat. I kinda like the eyes but the eyebrows look boring and lifeless. The hair is uncanny if that makes sense, you tried to draw too many random strands.

If none of that matters then no you didn't fuck up, the drawing looks okay to me

Yes it's okay, whatever helps you make the end product.

More importantly, learn to think for yourself,
"Am I deadset on just getting good at eyeballing those proportions?"
If yes, then I practice eyeballing. If I don't care about learning this skill right now then I just need to measure the lengths. You learn how to eyeball proportions eventually either way though if you measure a lot

keep studying anatomy and think more about a line before you put it down, do not go over lines again even if they are wrong, just do the whole figure again. Other than that keep practicing and you'll probably get better.

also study hands and feet, you are not drawing them in some figures cause you know they're hard for you.

Realized two days ago that I really suck at drawing eyes and lips (as well as drawing most other things, but these two things in particular). So I've been pretty much exclusively focusing on eyes and lips (while attempting to fill in the rest of the face. Here's something I did this morning. I'll post some other sketches I did on my sketchbook in a little bit. Please critique. Sorry about how sketchy it is.

Yea, my practice will come from training wheels like this, then trying to eyeball. Since I go to live figure drawing sessions anyways, of course I won't have this luxury, but I was just curious to know if this was too strong of a handicap. Thanks for the feedback.

The problem is that you're working with advanced concepts like inventive figure drawing and colour, while having absolutely no idea how to draw in the first place. Read the sticky, work through the material there. It's fine to have fun with drawings like this, but it's not practice, nothing about this piece will help you get better as an artist.
>>
>>2415192

Your construction is non-existent and your image is flat, you're trying to work with things you don't understand. Go to the sticky and start working on the material there.
>>
>>2415244
I'm thinking of starting with drawing on the right side of the brain. Is that okay? I'm not sure where to begin.
>>
>>2415239
>>2415242
what medium are you using? I'm guessing digital painting? If so, I suggest employing the use of textures, such as noise and clouds.
>>
>>2415242

Are you working from a reference? Everything looks unnatural, so I'm guessing you're not. I would stick to refs for now if not. Stick to a hard brush, a lot of it seems muddy/blurred, it's not a good look.

Personally man, I'd just call it, find a reference for a new painting and start over. Work on your edges and strokes, don't abuse the soft brush and mess up your edges with over blending and whatnot.

You could even try painting still life stuff like fruit and whatnot while aiming for stroke economy. That'll get you into the idea of using your brush strokes and edges to convey the idea of what you're painting instead of getting in there and overworking something that's not well designed. Don't do stuff from imagination that you haven't already painted from life many times either. Always use references either way.
>>
>>2415253

There are a few good exercises in it about observation, but there's a lot of filler pseudoscience about how the brain works that you can just skip through.

Keys to Drawing is the book I worked through, and I can definitely recommend that.
>>
>>2415266
its digital. i reworked a fucking ton of stuff including vastly altering the dimensions and canvas size. i know its 'untextured' right now. i just want to know if its going okay so far before i try to start pushing details. before my major revisions some pointing out to me that the clouds looked like literal shit. like a round lumpy greyish white turd. after the revisions i experimented with the 'fish eye' clouds, i think its coming okay i just want to be sure

>>2415267
im not. i just using refs for the general objects like 'sea foam' 'crashing waves' 'distant island' etc. so are you saying its bad? my original critisms were of about the color, poop looking clouds, and i got called on my grass being way to close to the water, which resulted in me widening the canvas by a lot. id rather not scrap it as i already really like it a lot. but youre right about the soft brush abuse. im just barely starting to utilitze flow so i should be able to blend better with the hard brush
>>
also glancing at it really quick the first thing that jumps out at me is the sea foam where the wave breaks. doesnt look natural at all so ill be redoing that too

Who else an eternal beginner here?

I've been drawing on and off for over a decade and I'm still on a beginner level.

Sure, I'm improving, I dug out some pictures from when I was starting today and they're autism-tier bad, but I don't have the work ethic or the patience to keep going, and quit each time and then have to relearn half the basics.

And yet I can't give up.
>>
>>2415461
I'm the same as you, man. Drawing is just a hobby for me. I'v been at it for years and there are no signs of me stoping any time soon. But I might never be good enough, I might never reach a level where someone other then me likes my art. But I enjoy what I do and I'm not giving up just yet.

The mountain in the back is way too detailed compared to the stuff in the foreground considering how far away it's supposed to be. The water doesn't make much sense at all, it's WAY too high, all that island should be underwater at this angle. Either lower that water or make the island bigger. Aside from the drawing stuff, the colors and values are really unrealistic and uncanny, do some studies and/or use reference
>>
>>2415563
so much empty space to the sides. are you going to fill that with something? otherwise all that negative space isn't really serving much of a purpose.
>>
>>2415578
A few things to work on:
When you upload your images, don't just post them straight off your phone. They come out huge and in the wrong orientation. Load them into a photo editor on you computer, even just ms paint, and rotate, crop, and rescale them. If the first thing wrong with your image is the presentation, many people will just ignore them or make fun of you instead of see the picture to critique. It's just human nature.
I see your are drawing perspective cubes. That's a good strategy to learn, but you have to do them correctly. Use a vanishing point and a ruler to draw in the guidelines to ensure you draw the box correctly. There's no point in using a guide box if it comes out sloppy.
Your pencil lines are fast and loose. That's fine once you are confident, but for now, just take your time and draw carefully. When you go too fast, your lines just appear on the paper undirected and unintentionally, which makes the whole thing look careless. When you see Prokopenko draw, he hovers his pencil over the paper and "ghosts" in a few air lines before he strokes, which helps him visualize where the line will go and stroke it correctly in one shot. He doesn't just scribble everywhere and hope for the best.
Keep trying and draw larger. Be more deliberate with your lines and make sure to apply all the steps carefully on each sketch.

You haven't improved on it or added anything from last time.
The foreground character is uniformly lit and the ground is just solid black. There's no sense of perspective or light source. Choose a light direction and put major shadows over the figure, and some texture to the ground to show perspective.
Make something concrete in the background since that is a focal point.

I did it in photoshop with the pen tool. I don't want to just start sketching. I want a good base. The end result won't be stiff.

That looks like a sunset/rise painting but youre not taking the color of the ambient light into account. It's gonna end up looking like this.

Perhaps lay down all your base colors first before going into shading/detail.

You put the features mostly in the right place but it doesn't look like you planned the drawing first. If you are going to get serious about face and head drawings you should get real paper and take crisper pictures.
>>
>>2415987
You're really coming along well. Try drawing slower and more carefully for the initial circle and measure the oval to make sure its exactly 2/3rd of the height. Make the chin a little wider and have the jawline flare out wider near the chin.
Try to be more economical with your lines. Practice making a few air strokes before each pencil stroke to get the muscle ready and help you visualize where you will draw next. Then make the stroke in one smooth motion. You can rotate the paper around all you want as you draw to help with the angles of your elbow and wrist. That will help you eliminate all these extra lines everywhere and force you to commit to the lines you do draw.
>>
someone else make the thread im out of good photos/
>>
>>2416042
There's only 7 here. Do you have the others on a different sheet? Make a big composite image with all of them.
Your gestures vary a lot in quality. Some of them are great, like the guy kicking over his head and the woman in the dress sticking her hip out. But I think you might be missing the actual point of a gesture. Its supposed to show the action or motion of the figure. You don't really want to make any short lines indicating details or cloths or anything, and you certainly don't want random scribbles or shading.
Try going over more figures and use the fewest lines possible. Only use S and C shaped curves and straight lines sparingly. Indicate curvature of limbs and exaggerate the pose to show expression and emotion. Don't draw any details like clothing.

What I learned: Measurement is easier to estimate with the paint layer than with the pre-sketch. I just need rough shapes with the sketch. Color-matching by sight is fucking hard. I even used the color picker for my swatches, but they still ended up weird. I need to do my mixing on a separate layer instead of experimenting on the canvas. The anatomy of a frog isn’t ingrained in my mind. This is why they should be dissecting frogs in school...

What I learned: The brow-ridge is why I wasn’t understanding the transition from nose to forehead. I have a lot of trouble with the ¾ view because of years of drawing manga shit. I have a hard time estimating the width of my drawings; some skulls are too wide while others are too narrow. I need to mark the horizontal edges as well as top and bottom. Motherfucking cheekbones. How do they work? I want to keep drawing, but the skulls are 2spoopy.

I cannot, for the life of me use reference. Anytime I even put up a photo to use, I just can't do anything anymore. I have no idea what is wrong with me; I'm thinking I'm just lazy and inexperienced when it comes to life drawing and stuff but its such a fucking issue. Something about dealing with real reference makes me anxious I guess. I only draw from imagination. I can only use reference if I look at something, then try to remember what it looks like (albeit fucked up; because there's no god damn reference)
