(I originally posted this over the Animenative Art/Stylization General but since I like you LAS people I thought I'd also post this here).

I suck at drawing eyes (I don't mean realistic ones - those I can since it's just a matter of copying real life). Girl eyes specifically (I don't care about dudes). I'm fine with drawing pretty much anything but this. I can visualize what I want to do but applying it just doesn't work. It's like I can't manage to find my own "style" (yeah I know muh style), or in other words I can't find what'd feel right to me. I could probably copy eyes from whatever manga or anime or someone else's style but it'd just feel too wrong to do this.

I would like to gather different opinions from you guys - how did you get good at drawings eyes? What made it all click for you? Does anyone happen to have resources or hacks to draw eyes? Did you just copy eyes you found were cool from your favorite artists and with time slowly altered them until you were satisfied or something? Any tips/advice?

Think of eyes as balls not ovals. Draw eyes inside the skull and the eyelids covering them

just experiment a lot, draw one eye, then draw another one with a different shape, then another one, etc... after a bunch of them, take whatever you like from them and combine them into another eye. Take inspiration from artists you like, don't straight up copy from them, but take whatever you like about how they draw eyes, the shape, the iris, the eyelashes, whatever. Also it's good to understand how eyes work in real life, how light reflects from them, how they look from different perspectives, etc. Take this with a grain of salt though, because I've never sat down to create my own style, but if I had to, this is how I would go about it. But I also believe that "manufactured" style tends to be pretty hit and miss, you may spend a ton of hours experimenting with stuff, and when you finally have something you feel is cool looking, other people may not like it so much. Take Sycra's "pointy" style for example, he has spent a lot of time developing it, but in the end I think it doesn't look that great (personal taste), it feels too artificial.

I'll admit it I only look at the submissions posted before mine (it's always around 50) when I upload my daily drawing. After that I usually go to bed and by the time I wake up it's already the new day, so in the end I'm only able to see half of the submissions.

I'd like it if there was a "see yesterday's submissions" table with everything uploaded the day before, especially since I don't follow anyone; not that I hate you guys but deep in my heart I'm rooting for everyone of you so it's only fair if I get to see all of your wonderful submissions. Also on a side note it would probably help catching the people eventually cheating more easily.

The site is automated enough so that every day people will be eliminated and every week a new challenge will start. If I die then the site will keep going until the hosting expires

Anyone else feeling gains already?
Not so much skill wise for me yet but I painted more last month than I did in all last year. And more than that, while the first few days were like hopping around on different studies and sketches and feeling nervous and switching whenever stuff wasn't working, now I just choose something and stick with it, knowing that I'll be able to work through the bad parts until I'm happy enough to post it.

It feels good man, feels really really good. Not to mention makes me want to art more and more, even when I have a bad day I just can't wait to get started on tomorrow's better submission.

Yeah, I've been drawing a ton more than I used to. I used to make a finished piece maybe once every couple of months. Now it's becoming much less daunting, since by forcing myself I've realized that it's not actually that hard. I always sketched a lot but for some reason I felt like there was a barrier between that and finishing it. And last semester, I almost didn't draw at all because I felt that I was too busy. Now I'm forcing at least 30 minutes into my schedule every day, and spending several hours drawing on the weekends. It's great, and I don't really like this word but it's empowering. I'm so glad I happened to come to /ic/ when this was getting planned, I needed this external push to my motivation.

I really struggle with the top half of the body. If you look through my tumblr you'll see that the last 2 weeks have been studies of the lower half and I started with the bottom because the top half is so intimidating. It doesn't look like much but what I posted took me 45 minutes if you include the half dozen that were garbage and I erased.

Also today was the first time since I started this thing that I put pencil to paper and did nondigital art. I filled out 7 pages in my sketchbook so I don't feel too bad about not posting a lot.

I generally don't ask for help or for critiques unless I'm "stuck," if you know what I mean. If I'm making the same mistake every day then yeah shit all over me I don't mind at all. Like I was called out for my forearms and hips and the people who did it were 100% right about it but at the same time I hadn't studied those parts of the body yet.

I don't want to come off as one of those guys who receive criticism and say "NO I KNOW TRUST ME I KNOW" because if you know then why are you making the same mistakes over and over, right? In my case it's because I haven't studied it yet. That's a relief. Seems pretty solid then. I just fear a little for the anon's who aren't that good yet and they, say spend 30 minutes on something small but they really put lot of thought into their line placement. I know other newfriends to drawing might see that as low effort and I do want to see newfriends improve from this.

Yeah that question about "but I'm not very good what if people flag my shitty posts as low effort?" gets asked a lot and I dunno, I think people are pretty good at determining who's being lazy and who's bad. Either way in the beginning reported post will be reviewed before being sent off with the tribunal (same with the tribunal votes) and once there's a good sample size thresholds will be set and then it can be automated
