Looks really great. You could accentuate the face with more scars or beards in popping colors like magenta and dark lines glowing with volcanic glow, perhaps. Just a suggestion.

If maintaining some level of believable realism is your goal, it's time to switch to a finer brush and rework the details and give texture.

Added a bunch more figures to this scene in various perspectives. I know the composition is bad and there are several different perspectives going on, but this was more of a test to see how well I could draw interacting figures in various perspectives. Tried to apply KJG's box method with all the angels on the right as well.

I'm a little confused by what you mean? I get that the right upper arm isn't as nicely done as the other but what do you mean about the knee?
>>
>>2320381
They give some pre written text that they copy and paste like "does not meet X criteria" etc.

I think the gist of what they didn't like was that the picture was not "brutal" enough (which I think is a fair assessment [I just wish they were more clear with what they mean when they say 'brutal' because in the original email they said they don't want to depict violence taking place]) I think I could have drawn them in slightly more action-y poses (which is what I intended from the start but things get messy along the way)

ALso I didn't copy the models they gave as a reference exactly. Which is annoying because I was shown a test they accepted and the characters in it were A. in what I thought were very boring poses. B. less rendered than what I did. And C. did NOT copy the references exactly either. Though you could argue the person kept the characters a little closer to the refs than I did but still jeez.

So I dunno. I'll re do it, in a few weeks you'll see it back here.

I've tried it a few times for some characters like pic related (with some added light sources) and some things I realized you need to get down if you want to make it work well:
- Have precise linework unfortunately, so you can pinpoint what forms are where. Like in your image you're going to have to have good idea of what every single fold really looks like, how the forms mesh with each other.
- Have a really REALLY good sense of form, particularly value transitions as forms turn away from you. If you don't get your value transitions down nothing will look like what you want them to look like.
- AO is obviously the star player of this process, I tried to study some 3D models on how the values transition into each other, some basic things obviously things get darker when surfaces get closer to each other. Also as white transitions into grey it's super slow, whereas from grey to dark grey the acceleration is much faster. You know, save the darkest darks for the parts where light will never reach and such.

I'm still trying to make it work myself, but getting the AO down is really energy draining. You really have to think like a 3D modeler when you do this. Hope that made any sense.

Pretty neat and imaginative. Just avoids being tumblr kitsch but I can't place my finger on as to why.

Did you do an undersketch with pencil or freehanded it all?
>>
>>2320676

I made it freehanded. I started with myself, and drawed the eyes in difernt places, trying to place each character making a general "mental view" of the final result.

The octopus, robots and other monsters are things that I usualy draw. They are my "style".

>>
>>2320963
I'm not sure if this will mean anything to you, but I've been practicing an exercise that has been helping me a TON with keeping things in proportion that are in perspective/foreshortened. Basically, try drawing a hand and a head. Draw the hand as if it was attached to the body by an invisible arm and torso. Once you have you're head and hand drawn, try to connect them. It doesn't matter where you placed your hand/head on the page. What matters is HOW you place them. For example: if I drew a bigger head and a smaller hand, I know that my hand is farther away from the camera. So now that my perspective is set, all I have to worry about is connecting the hand and head, with an arm and a torso that matches the perspective that is being implied. I hope that makes sense.
>>

Gross lines. Add variety in you line weight. Don't be afraid to leave out lines, it can actually help the piece.

>>2320990
Get better pens. Will honestly improve your work: your work can be as good as your equipment if you know how to use it.
The torso for the one on the left is a bit long. Not sure if that's just because this art style is "unconventional" but don't get in the habit of doing that.
Practice hands more.
The collarbone area on the left, still, is also quite high.
Not gonna tell you to completely ditch the anime style, but try different things as well. Realism, faces, that sort of thing
>>
>>2321006

>and it is on the high end

>>
>>2321015
Pull your head out your ass for a moment to see where you are, anon.

It's on the high end, a few people could give the person proper critique, never mind about the fact 90% of the people here know jack shit about traditional work.

There's a great grasp of the forms of the head, and can clearly show it with values but not necessarily tones. You think that piece is average or something? Do you honestly think that?

On a sacle of 0-20, 20 being a master it's around the 11 to 13 mark, the person is doing well. It's on the high end.

Or do you just not like people giving compliments here?
>>
>>2321015

You oughta know by now, anon. If everything you're saying weren't 100% the truth, he would've left a critique on the picture in question instead of getting salty at someone praising it. what's the issue with the value structure/composition here? I'm guessing the shapes should be better organized to lead the viewer to the face and some areas have weird tones.

There may be other drawing-related problems and it would be very nice of you to point 'em out, but I'd really like to know more about how to improve the comp/values here. Thanks guys!

if you're going to have the light from the back i think the front should mainly be in shadow and then have backlighting. if you want to push the angel concept i would remove the lightsource from the back and keep the topdown lighting while really emphasising the angel aspects like the wings and the halo

Looks good. Good sketch. The left arm (on the right) is not connected properly with the rest of the body and pose. It needs to be either raised, or shortened in length to form a hand.

The belly needs to be shifted slightly to the left (on the right for the viewer), and to below.

The legs are also not properly connected to the rest of the body. The left leg (on the right for the viewer) needs to lose some fat by cutting into the right (on the left for the viewer). As of now the massive protrusion of the leg and buttocks is anatomically impossible.

Usually when I post in the beginner thread nobody replies so here goes.
It's my second go at painting straight in color, for better or worse. I usually just do shit in black and white and then try to paint over my greyscale, usually with disastrous consequences.
Does anyone have tips/suggestions? Color-wise in particular but any ways is fine. I wanted it to be dark, but is it too dark? I feel like I'm having a lot harder time to avoid making it muddy in color than it is in black and white, too.

Do more life studies, really.
A general advice i've found by studying is that nothing is rarely 100% black, even the darkest areas. Pure black in screens has a tendency to stick out like burn marks or atleast that's my experience with personal work. Unless you're starting from black to light instead of the "normal way" of going light to dark.

I think the sky color is a bit dominating though and should've been a soft sky blue. A gradient would probably ease the viewer down along the picture. With white at the bottom where the atmosphere is thicker and sky blue at the top. Maybe add skies if you feel like it, but not neccessary i believe.

thanks dude. i actually thought the sky was not strong enough in the beginning. watercolor is super tough to control, hence the smudges you see in the sky. the gradient idea is a good one.

Dude i love your squiggly lines. I think your lineart is way above my level. We might be doing too different stuff, so it's kind of hard to chat about.

Oh i love how you managed to block the colors so well. You make it look so easy. The picture looks fairly realistic once you step back.

Hair's really just about seeing the big groups and splitting them into smaller groups, while maintaining the hair gesture.
Even in my study it's still a little compositionally spotty; I have the hair rhythms down but the parts where I decide to push the hair shadows and pull the hair highlights are really messy.

So this is my second digital painting ever and the first study I made from another digital artist (I'll post the original next)
Beside stuff like anatomy or proportions what should I focus on? I'm still pretty new to digital media and I really had to twist my head trying to emulate some effects but i feel like I'm thinking too much about it and missing simple solutions.
BTW I'm using SAI

I think plateaus are a part of the learning process. You do a lot of stuff on the same level and your subconscious is slowly churning away until one day it all pays off at once and you jump up in skill.

You have a blog btw?

I never follow a same set of rules, I have a pretty different workflow depending on what I'm going to do. But, I almost always start with a light pencil sketch, and then I proceed to isolate the darkest tones/highlights and apply big color areas. Everything that comes after depends on what I want to conceive at that moment. Sometimes it can end in that very moment I finish that process, sometimes I keep adding layers on what I feel is lacking. I almost never have a definite idea of what I want from the start, so I let the unpredictableness (is that a word?) of watercolor guide me through it. Hope I helped!

Muh nigga. Glad you gave it a shot. Did you notice that it made complicated poses WAY fucking easier? When I started using it, I started thinking of poses I would have NEVER thought of. It's also cool, because you can just slip figures (or anything) where ever you want in the scene. idk, It feels like it made drawing easier for me.

Also, idk if this happened to you, but I got this natural understanding of how to rotate shit in my head once I understood how the box worked.

Next time instead of copying, try visualizing it from a different angle or taking an element of what you see but use it for something else, ie: try to use the same lighting and color but on a totally different object like a head or something. Basically what this does is it forces you to actually think about what you're seeing and why it looks the way it is so that you can then adapt it to your imagination.

Does that make sense?

Still basically have no idea what I'm doing. Lots of things to fix but what I'm fiddling with now is that i want it to look like there huge vents of air shooting straight up out of the structure, almost enough to hold her up but I'm not too sure how to go about that.

Any ideas? I just threw the wind and snow together in a few minutes

Maybe it's just me, but the right leg position could be better. As is it strikes me as kind of awkward. Someone would usually fold his leg so that the knee points forward instead of upwards. It's just more natural.
If you don't want to align the knees you could just aim the right one diagonally.
