This is going to sound super queer, but I just reread this book and it fucked me up a bit.

I bought it at a Scholastic Book Fair when I was 11 and it was really my crash course in the process and thinking behind comic art and the comic business. Interspersed through the book are short little interviews with established artists as well as interviews with young and aspiring artists.

Most of the young artists are pretty cringey, need more Loomis, etc so through the whole book I was thinking "Oh God what a shit show all of these kids are losers." But then I get to the end and theres an interview with Becky Cloonan, who a few years ago became the first woman to draw an issue of Batman.

So that just really fucked me up in a good way, because when I was a kid she was in art school talking about wanting to do comics. And now I'm an adult and she's made it. So there is hope, because people CAN make it.

Thats all I gotta say.

How do you guys keep drawing? I thought this was the right thread to ask in. I get really bored of it sometimes but I've been drawing since I was able to hold a pencil. Since I got out of high school I just haven't been drawing anything (besides doodles on my notes) and it makes me sad I'm so not motivated to draw and it feels like a chore when I sit down and do it. Anyone else feel this?

Once a friend who is an artist told me to just force yourself to draw 5 minutes a day. That's it.

After the 5 minutes the "ugh i don't feel like it" feeling is gone and you start to enjoy yourself. If not, you only lost 5 minutes.

It works for me. Also remember that motivation is fleeting but discipline is 4ever. Surrounding myself with good art and artists also helps me remember why I want to do this.
