Bug out van for preppers/survivalists. When a disaster strikes, it's a low-key way to escape to a safer location with your food/water, tools, weapons, etc. Alternately, a mobile "rolling bunker" where you can stay ahead of zombies, starving/plagued/panicked citizens, and/or The Gubumint.

I teach at a major university's business school. Not only do I teach what the 80/20 rule is, but I also recommend that people follow it.

Go read Peter Drucker' the Effective Executive. Most of the lifestyle tips on that infographic are cribbed from that.

The list is a work-in-progress. Even still, if you were being conservative about what should go on the list, the Berlin Wall might not be important enough to qualify considering the list already mention the downfall of the USSR.

The claim that the CIA smuggled cocaine into the US (alternatively, that it was crack in particular) was Soviet propaganda.

After the soviet union fell, it came out that that and many other rumors (like the one that the CIA invented/spread AIDS to kill african americans, or the claim that Lee Harvey Oswald was a CIA or right-wing false flag operation to eliminate JFK before he moderated his position towards the USSR) were revealed to have been carefully crafted lies created by the KGB's Line PR division.

Russia still does that to this day, most recently by salting the (real) Hillary Clinton and DNC email leaks with fake emails designed to make America/CIA/Hillary Clinton look bad.

Here's an example they used on the Europoors:

clean water+dirty sand->dirty water + clean sand -put clean sand into magic filter->> dirty water + clean sand->clean water+ dirty sand

probaly it's me but this sand nigger technology is shit
>>
>>2765059
What exactly don't you get? This is almost how a pool filter works. The cloth filters out the sand in the water so you just have water, then it uses microbes to "purify" the water.

Teal deer: Basically it just makes clear water w/ good microbes in it.

Good lucking getting tenure. Good luck even getting a temporary position as an adjunct lecturer. Good luck maintaining your integrity when jobs are so scarce (White privilege? Yeah it's really problematic!) Good luck paying off potentially hundreds of thousands in student loans with no bankruptcy provisions.

You would be better off working at mcdonalds for seven years and paying nominal fees to use the university library if you actually care about your field. Supply>>>>demand.

pcsx2 but you need to get the bios off somewhere like pirate bay. Works great with the dual-shock 4.

for all the ISOs themselves I use emuparadise, it's been my go to for emulation for about ten years now, great library over there.
>>
>>2766548
also, apparently there's a way to export the bios codes from your ps2 so they're actual genuine bios files, this would be the most legitimate and legal way. But nobody really does that to my knowledge.

That's what I would be if I stayed in arts. I transferred to something else after I got my BA. Something like 10% of PhDs get tenure, the rest are angry adjuncts. If you're a genius and really driven then it makes sense to get a doctorate but if you just want a career the academy is not the place. Eventually high school graduates are going to start to think twice about the wisdom of going into debt for an arts degree and then what's going to happen to the temporary lecturers? They're fucked, that's what.

I have a feeling he would have looked down on all of us for being middle class rabble. My parents are well off but they like golf and watching tv. I wasn't taught Greek and Latin at a young age with classical music playing in the background and I don't think too many other people were either. The most cultured and artistic families seem to be rabid leftists anyway and send their kids to expensive liberal arts colleges where they become even more rabidly leftist than their parents.

>>2775169

If you're teaching and writing papers for journals you don't make much, even in the vaunted STEM fields. If all you care about is utility then there is no point in getting a PhD. You earn money by working in an industry, not in the ivory tower, and for most fields you only need the basic degree. Some people will get more degrees later, usually after working for some time.

Not him btw, just my 2 cents.

Most of them do consider this. The thinking goes as follows:

1) Preparation can reduce the lethality of a disaster. The 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, which at mag 9 was one of the biggest in history, killed about 15,000 people. In 2003, a much smaller earthquake (magnitude 6, no tsunami) killed nearly twice as many people (26,000) in Iran. The difference was that Japan's homes, industry, and infrastructure were hardened enough to withstand damage; and despite not being hardened enough for something so immense, it still saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

2) Most major disasters kill mostly via secondary effects: disease, lack of food/potable water/medical supplies, and post-disaster civil disorder. Very few disasters kill even most people in an area, let alone all (that's true for nukes as well). Even in disasters where prepping won't save you from becoming a primary fatality, it absolutely can save you from being a secondary fatality. Government emergency response usually takes 72-96 hours to initiate, which is why the USA's Federal Emergency Response Agency recommends that every citizen prep with emergency supplies suitable for 72 hours at a minimum in case of disaster.

3) If you're a primary casualty, your prepping won't matter, but also won't hurt. If you do survive, your supplies will save your life. Most people who buy flood and fire insurance never have to file claims on those, either. They're a minor expense now that mitigates a major risk. While the odds of any specific disaster affecting you are low, add them up and the odds that a disaster of some kind will strike are pretty high.

4) Prepping is fun, cultivates useful skills, and increases feelings of empowerment and self-efficacy. Living supplies like food help hedge against financial setbacks; construction spares often come in handy in ordinary "daily" disasters like broken windows and leaky roofs. First aid supplies and training will often save lives from ordinary injury.

It's weird being an american conservative and having to wade through alt-right fakers claiming that their third-tier garbage reading lists represent real conservative thought. Even the good authors on the list tend to be listed with their later, much less influential works, and a lot of the mainstream conservative books the lists pick are dead-end works (the equivalent of what Marcuse is like on the Left).

I suppose the idea is that they want someone getting into conservatism to say, "yeah I read Hayek, it was boring and not very interesting" because it was one of his lesser works (as opposed to Road to Serfdom, which is far more engaging and influential), while meanwhile getting excited by more persuasive works from alt-right authors. This way people will get into the alt-right rather than the thatcherite mainstream.

This infographic is incorrect.

Well, misleading. The vast majority of the US federal budget is so-called "mandatory spending". This chart only lists the small % of the federal budget that is "discretionary"; that is, decided every year as a line item but not mandated by statue as an entitlement. The decision about what is mandatory and what is discretionary is made by Congress and is totally arbitary, like the decision whether to pay a bill in cash or set it up for autopay from your bank acct.

It's like if you posted a chart of your personal budget, but only listed stuff you paid for with cash. Surprise, surprise, look how little you spend on power, internet, utilities, and rent!

It doesn't reveal anything about actual priorities. In the bottom right corner, they do have a note with total budget allocations by department, and while that's still slightly misleading (it's a pie chart that mixes both taxes received and spending that goes out) it at least gets most of the facts straight.

This depends entirely on what field you go into.

In the humanities, PhD programs are very large. Lots of people are admitted, lots get their doctorates. But there are very few jobs and it's rare to get a tenure track position. Most are like this guy, bitter and shell-shocked and either teaching high school or quitting education altogether. Even if you get a tenure track job, salaries are low.

In the physical sciences, PhD programs vary by field, so it's harder to generalize. Mostly it's like in the humanities, except for two things. First, after you get your PhD, you can do 6-7 years as a postdoctoral fellow making minimum wage. If you get enough publications, you might get one of the very, very few tenure track positions out there. Mostly you're chasing federal grant money to fund your position. But if you drop out of academia with a doctorate, corporate jobs are less satisfying but pretty damn sweet.

Depending on the field, social sciences are mostly like the humanities. Substitute campus activism for the post-doc in some cases. But there are exceptions:

Economics programs tend to admit a lot of students and then flunk out most of them in the first year. You need a ton of math to survive. If you do survive, the jobs picture is very good. Your odds of getting on the tenure track are pretty good, and pay is in the upper five figures. There's a ton of private sector jobs for economics phds.

Business school doctorates are similar to economists, but lower on the academic pecking order. The pay is way, way higher ($100-150k). They tend to admit very few people, but nearly everyone who gets in graduates and nearly everyone who graduates goes straight to a tenure track position if they want one. Lots of private sector jobs, too, and like economists most do consulting on the side that can add 50%+ to your annual income.

It really depends. If you got your phd in political philosophy it's your own damn fault.
>>
>>2775058

Starting salary for a tenure track position for my field is $120,000. A couple luminaries in the field are making $600k+, and that's not counting their consulting work on the side, which can easily get you into seven figures. Nearly everyone in my field who's awarded a phd ends up with one if they want it.

No, seriously, what field are you studying? You mention a post-doc, so I'm assuming it's a physical science? With your math skills and some supplemental work catching up in statistics and econometrics, you could be making six figures with no post doc.

I get that your field is intrinsically interesting to you (just as mine is to me) but if you're just after the Life of the Mind then you're in the wrong field.

The whole STEM push is because they're trying to lower the cost of labor in the tech sector. If we really had a STEM shortage, then why are they making less than graduates with MBAs and JDs?

Notice how all the initiatives to improve "competitiveness" in the technical fields consist of incentives to get people locked onto that career track. In other words, they care about increasing supply to lower wages, not increasing demand to raise wages.

So it's no surprise that science/engineering phds don't make that much. They fix that in five years by being more selective at the front end and admitting fewer people to doctoral programs in those fields. But they won't. Need cheap labor to generate papers to co-author, as TAs for freshman classes, and for the course subscription $$$.

Gorbachev and Shevardnadze declared their "Sinatra Doctrine" (you can have it your way) first. The idea was that holding together the USSR's collection of satellite states and puppet regimes was costing the USSR way more than it was returning in loot and leverage. The thinking was that this would free up budget $$$ (actually allocatable resources since they allocate resources directly rather than via pricing as in a free market). They'd use those resources to grow the economy and improve living conditions.

That was 1989. The gang of eight coup was two years later, in 1991. The gang of eight were hard liners who wanted to stop Gorbachev from rolling back communism further by overthrowing him. When the coup failed, the whole communist government fell.

So while you could kind of argue that they're part of the same process, you still can't say that the Wall fell second. The idea that the soviet union fell prior to something else that had already happened two years before is just flat out wrong.
