I've been looking at the cited sources and they do seem to be legitimate. The author's credentials are also legitimate. He's right about the idealistic views most scholars and researchers have of tribal cultures. It always confused me, how rosy they made it all seem. These people have modem human brains. They can't react all that differently from humans who are traumatized in modern societies. Turns out my suspicions were more correct than I wagered.

The worst part is that you can easily see similar cycles of abuse in modem society. Well, it's flawed for a number of reasons.

First off, the premise itself is a scarecrow, as many, if not most, anthropologists and archeologists will go on for days about how shit primitive life was (and is). It's pretty much only idealistic hippies and paleoconservastives that idealize primitive cultures. (And sometimes Hollywood.)

Secondly, it's taking the worst of each of these cultures, and claiming each horrific practice is universal to all of primitive man. They weren't. Primitive tribes, particularly in the Americas and Africa, were, and are, varied as fuck. It's true, the masturbation of children (but not copulation of) is fairly common - and was, even in Europe, as late as the 17th century and remains so in some parts of the world where they are currently building skyscrapers. However, nearly everything else in there describes the most extreme behaviors of a handful of tribes, sometimes even only during a single period of their existence, and stretches it out to the whole of creation.

The whole article is a series of individual examples of how bad things can get, merging them all into one, claiming it's the default behavior of all primitive man, and is constantly making baseless assumptions as to the psychological results of these behaviors... In psychohistory, sadly, this sort of deliberately slanted self-fulfilling prophecy is not uncommon.

There's really no default social behavior for man. It may have been the case that we all shared a unified culture during the genetic bottleneck, but since then, we've all spread out to be as varied as fuck, there being at least as many different cultures as there have been tribes, and given the changes over time, probably quite a few more.

And while the thought crime itself may not be illegal, since there's no way to prove it, the tendency certainly will get you socially ostracized and put under close watch, if people know you are thinking it. Further, preemptive measures are in place in most communities. Similarly, an adult hanging outside a school, for instance, is apt to get hauled off, if he can't promptly prove he's waiting on his child or such.
