They were hoping that if they inflicted enough casualties upon the American navy/marines they would be able to force a peace agreement giving them control over East Asia. After they lost at Midway, it all went downhill.
Pretty much exactly what >>2450555 said. The Japanese leadership figured that since the USA didn't have anything riding on it aside from a few small colonial holdings, they'd drop out of the conflict as soon as they started taking significant casualties - which could be greatly expedited by a decisive first strike. Then they'd have zero obstacles in becoming the dominant regional power, since they anticipated the Soviet Union getting obliterated by their allies in Europe.
In retrospect we can all agree that it was a terrible idea, since they had no chance of taking on the industrial potential of the United States and something as craven as a sneak attack was exactly what would get the Americans into the war whole hog.
Hold out until the US decides that the war is not worth the cost of pursuing, and then accept peace terms with favorable conditions.
Without the US, Britain and France have no hope of continuing either because they can't maintain a large enough presence in Asia.
Since the United States is a democratic country that gave women the vote, they figured all the women would be against the war and vote somebody in office who would sue for peace, thus allowing Japanese supremacy in the Pacific.
Control of the Pacific, I imagine, and then probably expand into the rest of Asia.
Destroy the exploitative, merciless Western colonies and replace them with exploitative, merciless Japanese colonies.

so that Japan could become an industrial and imperial power to rival UK, France, and the USA.
when they annexed Korea. it wasn't to have it as a puppet state or a colony. they wanted to completely change it by ethnicity and culture to be Japanese. So it would be part of the empire proper.
Pretty much wanted to become a Europe tier colonial power. There's also some kind of clause or something in their constitution (pre-1946) that basically gave the Diet incentives to be in a state of war most of the time. They wanted Manchuria because of them natural resources, which Japan is sorely lacking, and you can basically explain a lot of their other conquests that way too. The natural resource situation crippled their expansion. They were so dependent on American oil that when the Americans cut them off in 1940 they literally couldn't keep their navy going for more than a year, and caused them to opt for the preemptive strike on Pearl Harbor.
You can also partially explain it because they got a huge indemnity out of the Chinese after the First Sino-Japanese War (I mean like trillions of bucks) and were like "kuso, nigga, the taels".
