No it isn't. It's based on romanticized caricatures of warrior casts in popular culture. There's no direct similarity to their real life counterpart.

It's not even just the historical inaccuracies, his own video shits on his own conclusions as he obviously gives the viking a bow in the beginning.

Meaning, a viking could drop the samurai's horse regardless of all the other bullshit in the video.

Not to mention that European style of linked riveted mail was incredibly effective against arrows.

It would be standard equipment vs standard warrior type battle. Not specific weapon used by specific warrior vs standard warrior.

Vikings may have used bows/arrows but they weren't the standard issue weapon. Similarly, samurai horse may go down, but they don't go down that often to melee.

In the battle between three, Vikings would go down the fastest simply due to either Samurai's range or knight's charge.

Afterwards, Samurai could kite the knight and shoot arrows.

The battle would end same regardless.

I don't get the vikaboos butthurt when the outcome is same.
>>
>>2353568
> It would be standard equipment vs standard warrior type battle.

Then viking still gets a javelin/throwing axe and both he and the knight still have a shield with the samurai having to move in closer to actually shoot them(because arrows are slow and require seconds to travel 100m, so in a duel long range shooting would be useless).

> Afterwards, Samurai could kite the knight and shoot arrows. The battle would end same regardless.

lol no, samurai arrows would have major issues penetrating mail and the 11th century kite shield is basically impervious to arrows and covers most of the body.
>>
not to mention samurai quivers only had 6-18 arrows usually.

What's the issue? You don't have to be so autistic about it. A bow is a bow. It will be used for its intended purpose, as a ranged weapon.

>MatPat gave him a copy of the videogame "Undertale". The pope then proceeds to make a public announcement on how the youth are spending too much time on videogames.

Knight is on foot and waiting.

The samurai has limited arrows and 99% chance he wont get through the shield or mail with them.

Then the viking can have one and shoot the samurai horse.

>>
>>2353957
>knight is on foot and waiting
So 0% chance samurai will lose and >0% chance samurai will win.
>>

> So 0% chance samurai will lose

No, one of them has to eat/sleep sooner or later.

Also, this is in the case of the knight not having a crossbow...which he could have.
>>
>>2354190
So on a battlefield with no food, who could survive?

A knight in full armor or a samurai with bow on his horse.

I'd give it to samurai. Horses can forage from grounds. Knights on ground will be weight down by the horsemen and be constantly be kept without sleeping. Meanwhile horsemen can go as he please without any danger from melee.

Exhaustion + range + mobility + emergency food resource (horse) wins out in your given scenario.

Bad argument. Matt had the poorest Viking against a distant relative tier mid range Knight (with only a torso of mail) fighting the fucking shogun

The best way to deliberate on which was better would be like this.

>Knight attack Samurai
Stale mate, we know that spanish soldiers and full armour (with guns) beat ronin in full armour (with guns). Although it's not perfect it means military might goes to knight. Japan is hard as fuck to dominate though so they wouldn't succeed.
>Samurai attacks Knights
Total Japanese rinse out

Knight>Samurai

>Viking Attacks Knights
Stale mates. Vikings were good at raiding but often got reemed without surprise due to fortification and preparation
>Knights attacking Vivkings
Complete rinse out. The vikings couldn't feasibly stop a legitimate ground based attacking force

Knight>Viking

>wooden spoon
>Samurai attacks viking
Hard to say. Vikings were navally strong so they'd probablly stale mate if not win
>>
>>2354985
>viking against samurai
>muh island nation perfect for raiding and whittling away at without taking any real losses or wasting resources
Possible Viking advantage

Viking>Samurai

>Naval battles aren't battles
This is a dicussion about Vikings, a heavily naval reliant group, Japanese samurai, who live on an island which other than infighting is entirely naval reliant in wars with its neighbours be they defending or attacking. Finally, Knights, who had to deal with naval raids all the time and fights across a channel regularly.
I don't think it being naval means anything in particular.
They still boarded and engaged. They still fought in close combat.
>>
>>2354882
The first few minutes establish that all warriors are from 11th century.

Selective hearing much?
>>

>>
>>2355054
It matters because the Japanese at taht period really sucked at navel combat. They were much better in battles on land

Thought they were alright in the eleventh century, but guns dont factor in there

They are called vikings knights and samurais I thought? You sound like a sophist
>>
>>2355018
Average vikings were poor. Average knights were soldiers swearing their allegiance to nobles. The Samurais were the new class during the same time period. They were a powerhouse that was controlling the government and such. Samurais are rich/educated warlords of Heian era. The foot infantry soldiers are the peasant conscripts armies. There's also the buddhist warrior-monk class too which becomes their own faction. They're all separate class of fighters.

So you have vikings who are mainly poor peasants and fishermen raiding poorly defended monasteries and villages and running away/failing hard at any moderately defended area. This is not to say some small percentage of vikings aren't rich or very rich. Just that majority are poor sods.

You have knights employed by the nobles to defend their territory. They are employed as armored horsemen who can basically tank measly peasant attacks like vikings with ease.

You have rich educated samurais who are basically the cream of the crop of the Japanese warfare.

The battle will be basically Samurai/Knight easily dispatching Vikings. Then its ranged Samurai vs Knight.

Samurai vs Knight is the biggest question of weapon/armor. Either the mail/horse can withstand Samurai's arrows or the knight can reach the samurai.

I'd give it to ranged attack over melee.
>>
>>2357741
> I'd give it to ranged attack over melee.

But desu

[Alexiad, VIII.8];

"For he knew that the Franks were difficult to wound, or rather, practically invulnerable, thanks to their armoured coats of mail. Therefore he considered shooting at them useless and quite senseless. For the Frankish defensive arms is this coat of mail, ring woven into ring, and the iron fabric is such excellent iron that it repels arrows and keeps the wearer’s skin unhurt."

>>
>>2358300

lol no, historical yumi's were 80-90 pounders, modern reconstructions usually 35-35 pounder.

Longbows were 120-190lbs.

>>
>Dipshits arguing that the fantasy doesn't entitle it to do as it pleases.

Have any of you played it? The story is that there was this massive fucking earthquake that shattered the European kingdoms, Japanese kingdoms, and Viking mud huts. Then they somehow meet up and fight for so damn long they don't know at all why they're even doing it. They're practically separate from the real vikings, knights, and samurai of the real world in every way but their war technology.

There's nothing real about the game. It's dark souls level realism
>>
>>2358849
>>2358860
I searched around and I could only fined speculation because historically yumi were rated by how many men it took to string them and historical records dont have draw rates
>>
>>2358860
Well, he is right about the longbow draw weight, a lot were excavated from the Mary Rose site and they are stated as being 120-200lbs.

The yumi, I do not know, but considering that the Japanese practiced horse archery, he may be right, as horse bows have to be lighter since you cannot use your body as much when you draw the bow but just your arms.
>>
>>2358860
Not him, but it is entirely plausible that the japanese bow was weaker compared to a longbow.
For one, samurais used the bow on horseback, meaining it had to be easy to draw from that position, so it had to be weaker
Second, the material it was made out of, the yumi is fucking gigantic, it was made mainly out of bamboo and regular wood, but due to the size and being made out of multiple pieces and what not, it was prone to breaking, so they used all sorts of methods to keep it together.

If you're really interested in japanese weapons, I can recommend Stephen Turnbull's books, guy is a giant fucking weeb, and has some weeb bias, but otherwise his works are well researched

There was a video on youtube of a yumi compared to the longbow. The video itself was retarded but they used a 50 pound-ish draw weight for both bows.
Anyway i highly doubt a japanese bow would ever achieve a draw weight of three digits. And even if it did, chainmail and gambeson are more than enough to protect against it.

>>2359949
Yes armor protects against arrows except at extremely short distances, We know from records the Japense talked about firing from 15m to get penetration. But even then I said the main effects were horse wounds and lowered moral.

I am not, 11th century samurai armor was primarily composed of interwoven steel plate, that is to say there armor was hard to penetrate as well.

That's not right. Japan for example was in constant war with itself, the bushi harnessed their techniques to the max. But japanese Swordplay concetrates on attack not defense, to bring your enemy down before he can strike, because of this they wore wooden armour and no shields. In the end they can't do shit against european god-tier defense stances, armour and shields. European sword-play concentrates on defense, to wait until your enemy is either out of breath or he makes a mistake and to strike then with a sure kill move.

Not sure your a a troll or not but not all japanese sword schools focus on attack over defense and the Japanese definitely did wear wooden armor
>>

Actually, it is not.

It has a nearly equal flex as mail and very similar performance against arrows from what I have seen.

Also, the lining that holds the plates often breaks from the force of the arrow hitting.

According the history professor Karl Friday's book, it is

>The vikings looks like they came out of a 10 y o kid imagination. It's just ridiculous.
It's a game about vikings vs knights vs samurais, what the fuck do you expect. I won't buy it because I didn't enjoy the gameplay but I'd be disapointed if it didn't look like a 10-year olds fantasy.

>Karl Friday

Karl Friday is such a weeaboo his name is mocked in modern historiography.

Look up the works of Dr. Williams or even just read the primary sources.

Saladin's own generals are mentioned, in Muslim sources(for instance in Baha Din), as bragging how they managed to get their hands on a Frankish(European) coat of mail, it was for a good reason.
>>
Why the fuck do people insist on comparing categories as specific as "Knight" and "Samurai" to something as broad as "Viking"? A proper comparison would be to a Huscarl, or even a Bondi would be better.

have any sources for that? last I checked he was one of the most respected scholars on medieval Japan

He tells the truth, the man is mocked, especially for his earlier works.

>>2363391
At least when I look at things on Japanese history I always see him highly regarded.

Can you site some examples, links, alternative professors?

Looks like iI still have to learn
>>
>>2363232
Which "Dr. Williams" exactly? I would also liked to see people mocking Friday for myself.
>>

He probably means Alan Williams

He is a real big shot in historiography atm.

His book is arguably the most comprehensive work about this specific subject ever written;

For what I see it's mostly material history, there's nothing on societal subjects in regard to japanese history and their warrior class, which is mostly what Friday writes about, so I can't see how one can substitute to the other.
Now I understand that the reference was about material history, but saying that one should read Williams rather than Friday, apart from that specific subject seems a bit odd.

Not the guy you're talking to, but if you make comparative statements akin to "lamellar armour is better than mail", then you better be familiar with both sides, otherwise you're going to look silly.

Does williams compare chain mail and japanese lamellar?

I really am confused by the comments on Friday. I see him cited by other scholars of Japanese history, the professor who I took for Japanese history had no problem with his work.

I don't remember Williams making comparative statements like that. However, given the fact that lamellar armour has been around in the west, yet people preferred mail throughout the middle ages, speaks for itself. Not to mention that Japan too used a mail and plate combination in later centuries, so there must have been something about mail which was preferable.
>>

They used chainmail, both as an under armor or in some cases as fully suit of armor, the latter however was not popular. They used chainmail to protect joints as well, since its flexible, though the thin chainmail weave provides very poor protection against percussive hits. It will stop a sword edge but the force of the blow can still carry into the wrist.

They had a number of under armors if you could afford them which makes sense given it has more gaps than European plate

The overlapping plates of steel on the other hand were pretty much impossible to penetrate except with things like guns and heavy weapons

Yes, they used mail.

Yes.

Surely knight and samurai are just as broad? Knight even more so as it covers a social class on an entire continent that existed for more than 1000 years.
