or your education in a highly racially charged atmosphere hasn't exactly given you an unbiased view of how mob violence works. A lot of sources describe lynching as a political act designed to enforce white supremacy, an in some cases the KKK did do organised lynchings for this purpose. But usually this sort of violence is a spontaneous thing that can dissipate just as quickly as it gathers.

Instead of a mob of frothing-at-the-mouth white racists ready to brutally slaughter any black man that stood out from the normal servile lot, I'm guessing that word got around that Jones was holding meetings and gathering blacks together, and people concluded that he was possibly planning to incite the black community against the whites. The whites in the South did not take their social position for granted as just the way things were - there was always an underlying paranoia that the blacks would rise up against them one day (incited by educated blacks or carpetbaggers from the north).

So a crowd starts to form around Jones' house. The individual people aren't there specifically to do violence - they've just been hearing rumours and have come along to see what all the fuss is about. But if the crowd reaches critical mass, and the rumours passing back and forth manage to convince people that Jones is really going to start some sort of riot or revolt among the blacks, then he'd have been hanged on the spot.

Then they realise he's just a schoolteacher. Polite, well-spoken and well-dressed. Not an agitator. The idea that whites in the Jim Crow South hated blacks is modern revisionism. They lived in areas that might be over 50% black - they could hardly live in constant hatred of people who were all around them. They just had specific ideas about black people's place in society - and once Jones convinced them he wasn't doing anything to threaten this they applauded him for his charitable, Christian work in helping out those poor black children.

I despise Castro and his kind (pic related), but that doesn't mean Batista's regime wasn't corrupt, incompetent and brutal. After a certain point trying to prop up a failing regime is just counter productive. Either way, there's no reason the US should be blamed for the Cuban elite's mismanagement. I remember reading about Roosevelt's "good neighbor policy" and heard my Seattle-born, leftist professor praise the way that the US government let "Cuba decide its own fate" (as he put it), and I just walked out. America abandoned Cuba. It's one of our greatest failures as a nation and killed the hopes and dreams of so many latinos who once believed that Washington could be the beacon of democracy, the way Bolivar once thought. America's failure in Cuba is a microcosm of America's failure in all of Central and South America.

I'm not even saying necessarily that the US shouldn't have intervened. I'm just saying, as an impartial observer (in that I'm neither American or Cuban) that it's a bit much to blame America for not supporting someone as anti-freedom as Batista. It was precisely because America had set itself up as a beacon of freedom and democracy that they didn't feel they could go on supporting the Cuban government.

For sure. Please don't misunderstand, I know full well that Batista was not a good man, or man who fully supported democracy. But that doesn't mean abandoning an entire nation to communism is right. Think of it this way: Petain, Hitler, Mussolini, and Yamamoto/Amagi (Japan's top admiral and general who essentially ran the show)were all bad men, weren't they (far worse than Batista)? The USA, for more than 200 years, has claimed responsibility for the protection of democracy North and South America, through the Monroe Doctrine, the OAS, and that one treaty which has a name I don't remember (basically guarantees that we'll lay down our lives to defend our brother republics all the way down to Argentina). Cuba was in negotiations with the US and the USSR to join either's sphere of influence. If the US attacked during this, the USSR could easily have retaliated with an invasion elsewhere. If the US did so after, it's basically a DoW on the USSR.

YES. That is just what it should have done. Exactly what it did in 1899. Send in the fucking Marines, the army, the navy. Put Batista under "house arrest" in some ranch in the middle of nowhere in Kansas, put Castro up against a wall and shoot him. The United Sates has a ridiculous amount of power. Even today, in 2017, it makes up 20% of the global economy, in 1960 it made up 40 percent. I'm not sure you understand my position. I was born and raised in the United States. I love my country. But my father was born in his family, as were so many of our relatives.
