Maybe this is the wrong board, but does anyone else here find the concept of insurance just mind boggling? I think the concept of assessing risk very interesting. Does anybody here work in Insurance?
Am I weird or is insurance a pretty neat idea? How did it even come about?

Insurance has been around way longer than that. Also by law you need it for vehicles

I may be wrong but I heard once it originated with trading guilds paying into a common fund incase a ship never came home.
I can also see it originating with the first guy who said, "nice building you got here, sure would be a shame if it burned down"

I think it's funny that you're gambling either way. Buying insurance is a bet something bad will happen, not buying is a bet nothing bad will happen. Either way is pretty expensive.
Insurance has its roots with ships going on long excursions for purposes of trade. I personally can't tell you much more. Sorry.
