It depends on what you mean by breeding. In the case of keeping up with purebred lines of specific breeds, probably not.

Most purebreds are inbred and deformed at a ridiculous rate at this point. Illnesses are also super common among them. Keeping the lines going only furthers mutations that only makes lives harder for the animals and increases the rate that they'll be in pain for most of their short lives. It's pretty cruel to breed something specifically to be deformed and sick just so someone can brag that they spent a shitload of money on a "purebred" kind of some dog they're not even going to use for its intended purpose.

All dog races are quite extensively bred though. A healthy dog would be a mutt or a breed that hasn't been "bred" that much.

Don't even like dogs but the type of breeding done to them is so fucked up. Some dogs breeds can't even fuck at all due to their misshapen bodies. There MUST be ethics in animal breeding because I'm not an animal guy but breeding creatures into a life if disorders and issues is just cruel.

Somekinds of breeding can be beneficial. Dobermans for example were bred to be loyal, intelligent and ferocious guard dogs. Border collies were bred to be intelligent shephers and as a result are the most intelligent breed around.

Breeding dogs for being "cute" like the abomination that is the pug, on the other hand, is downright unethical. We breed these dogs to be miserable, unhealthy and useless. Someone I know owns a pug and fucking hell, his breathing is so damned heavy. Poor thing, it must constantly feel out of breath.
