Before you ask I will not be scanning the Kino doujin. That one I will be saving for myself, this is not the first time I have done this and it won't be the last. Everything else is fair game.

Also this should go without saying but please be cool. Scanners buy books with their own money and spend their free time scanning and cleaning them for you to enjoy for free. Making Demands of them if your aren't commissioning them is bad form.

However on the other hand they are just guys with a free time, a scanner, and some expendable income. There is no need to suck their dicks.

Ero here, while that guy was a bit turned up I understand what he is getting at. While scanning and light cleaning of books isn't hard it does take a good amount of time. One of the last things I want to see after spending an hour and a half working on a book is some asking me to do another one.

I mean I get the whole 1% rule of the internet, but it still gets to you. I know it gets said a lot but saying thanks with no strings attached or giving some real feedback on their scanning/cleaning job goes a long way.

I'm pretty sure most of the pokemon doujin will be scanned eventually anyway, even if it takes a few months. The Sun/Moon games especially revived interest in doujin artists and that stuff is bound to get scanned at some point.

Dunno, if guy gave you 5$ to buy someones doujinshi it's like he supported author. For example i would like to buy some doujinshi, but i don't want to go to Japan or move closer to Japan to do so. So paying to the guy who can buy me some manga and scan it for me feels fair to me. The only problems are how to trust this guy who can simply take money and say that he is buzy or will get stuff or his scanner broke, etc. That's why i think there should be site with bounty system. You take photo of Magazine/Doujinsh. You put price of actual price + couple of bucks for traveling/picking it up and then scan.

It's not a rocket science. You go into shop/comiket and make a photo. You put in online on your site with price including actual price + money that you think you deserve to compensate your time. Scanner: $30 (sunk cost)
Iron: $20 (sunk cost)
Misc Supplies: $~10 (mostly sunk cost)
Doujin: 500~1200 yen ($4~$15 depending on exchange rate)
Fees: ~1200 yen (assuming one book; this cost can be spread out if a lot of books are ordered at once from the same shop)
Shipping: 2500~7500 yen (depends on weight, assuming EMS)
Total: ~$50 for one book, and ~$60 scanning supply cost

Importing shit is expensive, which lots of people don't seem to get. I try very hard to do my purchases in large batches to offset that cost (because the fees are significantly lower if I do one big batch from one shop), but even so it's not cheap. $5 might cover the cost of the book itself, but that's not including shipping from Tora, the handling fee, and shipping to the US. I do it because I enjoy the books and want more people to be able to access them, but I won't pretend that it's not an expensive hobby. That's a big reason of why I don't want to accept requests from people, because it either wouldn't cover the costs or would lead to having to scan stuff I'm not into.

Good luck. I think you'll find a lot of the scanners are people who import shit rather than people who actually go there. Not saying there aren't since we know a few, but they're an outlier compared to those of us who are elsewhere.

For a realistic example of import costs, I ordered 30 books over C91. A few of them I added to the order at the last minute, which means I had to pay another fee since they weren't part of the main batch. So far, just counting the cost of the books, shipping from Tora/Melon, and the handling fees, I've paid 28500 yen. Then I have to pay shipping, which will probably be around 5000 yen. I'm also considering shipping early since 3 of the 30 won't be out until the last week of January and are holding up the whole thing. Plus there are a few more books I want, so I may ship 27 then add some more while waiting for the remaining 3 and ship a second order, which is of course more fees and a second shipping cost.

However, that's still 28500 yen for 30 books, which is just the cost of getting it from Tora/Melon. Going on-site you still have the travel cost and the whole standing in all the lines and potentially missing out on the popular circles. Sure it's 'cheaper' but it's also more of a gamble and a significant time-waster.

In my minds eye the site would just have a list and you can throw 5 USD at whatever doujin you want. It wouldn't show you (buyer) how much has already stacked for the one doujin only the verified collectors could see how much for each doujin. I wouldn't think this would be an issue because either the bounty is high enough to get someone to buy and scan it before someone else does (bounty creates competition between collectors) or the bounty would be too low and no one would pick it up. Because it would either get uploaded onto the internet later for free and then the buyers withdraw the bounty or no one uploads it and that buyer just withdraws their funds. In practice the site would mostly deliver on getting your digital lover, MTSP, xration, etc to people that want them right after comiket ends so the bigger circles. While you could put bounties on more niche doujins I have no idea if the bounties would get big enough for the collector to bother getting and scanning it.

GIMP is a terrible suggestion for dumping images from PDFs since you have to reencode and you rely on Ghostscript to get the internal resolution correct on parse. XPDF will let you dump the raw images without reencoding, and GuaPDF will decrypt PDFs if they have image dumping restrictions enabled.

There are a few mail forwarding services you can use so you can order from Tora, Melon, and sites like that. Nagomi and Mandarake both ship to the US. If you don't want to use mail forwarding or can't scan them yourself check the panda forums there are people there who will get the book for you and scan it. Keep in mind if you use them you are going to paying for the shipping and a fee for them to scan it.

Most DRM won't let you screencap while the program is running or at the very least disables your computer's clipboard.

Regardless of what the program is doing I managed to get the files into something useable without having to do any real work.

Just finished scanning and cleaning a tank, and I have to say fuck that noise. I don't know how people do it, even with a sheetfed scanner it takes forever.

You don't have to, but you'll only get a quality scan (especially for books with content all the way to the spine) if you do. I use a clothes iron to melt the binding glue then separate the pages, personally.

I have a few things but those are all books that cost me 200+ USD converted to get a hold of from hole in the wall shops in Akihabara. I didn't rip those since they cost so much, which means I had to get inventive to scan them without damaging them. Even after that the scans need a lot of touch ups. So I hope you can understand I am not about to spend 200+ USD and 5+ hours of my time to just give it away for free. Those books are mine, if someone else wants to get a hold of them and post them for free more power to them, but I am not that guy.

Second hand doujin shops are the way to go. Tora and Melon don't do second hand too much so you won't find older stuff there most of the time. Mandarake is ok but their online catalog isn't always up to date with what is in each of their stores.

If you can luck out and find a guy in Japan who is willing to do a ton of leg work going to stores, getting older or less popular books is going to be hard.

It is the 2 part to remake by House of Karsea. Since Syouji is drawing the Railgun manga she(?) have stopped making doujin. Also she made PRETTY NEIGHBOR&!, which you might have heard of.

If you are too broke or too lazy to get the books you want that is fine. What pisses people off is when you guys post in any thread of people uploading stuff if they have random doujin you want. Get it in your heads you put nothing into what people upload so you have no right to make request.

Also don't take this the wrong way but you are sort of the worst. It takes me a good amount of time to scan and clean a book. While I don't do this for any thanks, the last thing I want to hear after uploading something is a request for something else.

If you have some advice for me to improve please share it, or just say thanks. Pretty much if you don't intend on hiring me to do a scan then I don't really care about what you would like for me to scan.

Use a black backer of some sort (black folder, thick black construction paper, etc) behind the page you're scanning to prevent bleed-through. Scan at at least 300dpi for grayscale pages and 600dpi for color pages. Just doing those two things will mean your scans will be better than most new people.
