I think that it might have to do with the fact that the shoes don't really look in the same proportions as the rest of the character. If you were going to revise your character, I would recommend going with a different type of footwear -- perhaps something mono-color and/or doesn't have laces (?) [what I am guessing the white stuff on the shoes is]. I don't know what your intended use for him is, but I think he has potential. He is also more aesthetically pleasing than many characters in contemporary domestic (US based) animation on television today -- in my opinion.
