Goddammit, I just want something as good as Sublime but not a resource hog like Atom. I don't even use it for developing, but I like having tabs and saving sessions. Other text editors like pluma and gedit are too buggy.

I'm on xubuntu and really need to be able to press
[Alt] + [Shift] + [R]
for one of my programs, but when I press it, nothing happens.

I think xubuntu might disable that because it uses that shortcut itself. I looked into Settings > Settings Editor > xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts, but there is none that uses my combination.

What can I do to press that combination in that program?
>>

Anki. I need it for the Cloze Overlapper add-on.
>>
>>62446265
Well, you can program in both windows and gnu/linux but in gnu/linux you have much more freedom unlike windows. In windows if you want to modify a program thats non-free you have to reverse engineer it, but in GNU/linux most software is open and free and you could easily modify pretty much anything if you are a skilled programmer.

Btw do you use testing?

Fresh install of debian. Intel WiFi firmware installed and all. Wireless networks are shown but the damn thing doesn't connect. Gives me the password dialogue repeatedly. Obviously password is correct. Checked stackexchange the solutions didn't work. What do?
>>
>>62447953
I personally just use pdftools on Emacs. I didn't know you could edit pdf's on Evince. Obviously, that's no good if you don't like Emacs, but I find that it provides most of the functionality Evince provides.

>>62448088
Are you trying to connect to your wireless networks through a network manager or through wpa supplicant. Try the latter, if you haven't. The network managers on heavier DE's, I find, are really unreliable and basically worthless. Part of the reason why I hate live mediums that ship with stuff like KDE. It's so stupid.

>>
>>62448212
I suspect that it's not so much an issue with Debian and their quality control as it is with the software in itself and, presumably, how it interacts with the drivers. I've had similar issues with many live mediums, like the Gentoo LiveCD, which is ridiculously big for medium that's meant for a simple chroot install. I mean, seriously, anything bigger than XFCE is just bloat for the sake of it. I don't care if you're using a WM or LXDE or whatever, but when you have that many moving parts, something's bound to break, and it's downright offensive how bad poorly made some of these live mediums are.

Just do a net install or a debbootstrap install, if it really bothers you. Honestly, though, you're going to pull in about the same number of packages regardless of how you install it, since you're still going to need the majority of those packages to have a functioning desktop.

If you have to go downstream, always go with the purest strand.

Antergos themselves maintain that there is no difference between it and Arch (see: https://antergos.com/wiki/miscellaneous/frequently-asked-questions/#Q_What_is_unique_about_Antergos). And as it's pointed out time and again (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2Wb7fkLxr0 for one YouTuber's example), that seems to be a true statement.

Manjaro maintains some packages in its own repositories, making it impure Arch.

But since you brought the topic up, I remember pyllyukko mentioning something on his page about how ghacks and his user.js achieve the same purpose but with different implementations, but I couldn't find any commentary on what precisely distinguishes the two. I read the user.js comparison grid thing, and, as it strikes me, pyllyukko's is more minimal, but I don't know enough about what either user.js does (beyond the superficial) to really understand the distinction.

I've also been wondering whether these user.js's would be applicable to FF57+. I mean, there's no reason it wouldn't, right? But I can't help but wonder.

First make sure you have everything up to date. Then, try temporarily removing your xorg.conf, move it to something like xorg.conf.bak and restart xorg. If that doesn't work, consider testing xfce or openbox of you want something lightweight.

So I just finally got through the installation of Arch linux because..I don't know why; pretty much the autists on this thread convinced me so. I was previously on Manjaro.

All I can say is, seriously, why the fuck wouldn't you use manjaro/antergos? The fonts look terrible, the installation was a fucking pain just so I could get back a lot of the same shit that gets installed by default in manjaro, and when all's said and done, this isn't even as comfy as the manjaro build, period. WTF?

Maybe I'll check out antergos. I honestly just feel like a retard.

I mean I do like the AUR. I see why there's so much hype and collective autism about it. I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that there's just not that kind of community functionality in any other distro including debian.

But tbqh senpai, the more I fuck with Linux, the more I find myself mostly trying to get back functionality that's present in windows 10 already. I honestly do like the look of KDE better; the free software philosophy, and the nerdy satisfaction of running >MUH LINUX. But I'm wondering if I should just take my gaymez and my IDE's and run back to windows and be done with the linux meme.

>>
>>62455800
Glad you asked. Let me list a few little niggling things:
(btw most of these have to do with KDE, but there's not really a DE quite like it so I prefer it over everything else)
- can't paste image URLs in Kdialog to grab directly into the image picker, e.g. when posting on 4chan
- for some reason, moving the mouse all the way to the leftmost 1-pixel border of the screen doesn't refocus the window under it. for example if I have chrome fullscreen and a terminal over it, if I click anywhere on the screen it'll focus chrome. If I click with the mouse moved all the way to the left of the screen, it does nothing at all ???
- various network issues, getting networkmanager in this arch build to work was a total PITA. Keeps dropping out from time to time. Minor inconvenience
- pulseaudio is a NIGHTMARE. Doesn't detect my headphone jack on the front of the computer until I unplug/replug it in, and then it sometimes doesn't detect my mic. Confuses the sound between that and the back audio port (my speakers), and recently trying to delete the config files broke pulseaudio completely, which is part of the reason I decided to scrap the whole thing and try installing arch from scratch
- gaymes, obviously. Titanfall (EA, Origin) ALMOST works but not quite, and even if I could get it to work (it's a bcrypt problem, I submitted a bug), I hear only the proprietary AMD driver works because of DX11, which arch officially doesn't support
- even with steam games like CSGO, framerate is horrendous for some reason, could never fully troubleshoot it
- various other little problems with apps installed from AUR, like discord. Minor inconvenience again
- shoddy support between KDE and the system itself, not as many unified features that make shit Just Work™
- dolphin, while overall a good file manager, just has little things missing here & there that are much easier to work with in Windows, and work by default
>>
>>62455901
I could go on but it's just those little things. I much prefer the unix architecture, especially when it comes to development stuff with python and java, which I'm trying to get into moar. And the whole app installation process through the AUR (with pacaur) is awesome, but still it's through CLI which although I'm comfortable with, just still doesn't feel as 21st-century as downloading an .exe. Idk, just something that could really be streamlined more with the current state of technology these days.

Idk mayne, I love the idea of linux, but it's really annoying me. Just feels like trying to keep this sinking ship from the late 90's afloat most of the time, whereas you could just install windoze, KMSpico it and be done with it, and the entire world supports it even though M$ is an evil corporation and yadda yadda.
>>
>>62455925
Plus, with companies like Fapple utterly dominating the tech space (and ever-gaining an increasing market share) the idea of paying a premium for an entire hardware & software ecosystem that works literally flawlessly and smoothly seems more & more attractive by the day. And this is coming from someone that's tried all of it and vehemently sticks to his android devices and everything anti-Apple and proprietary software in general.

:/
>>
>>62455901

I can see how those things would bother you. I can't really offer any solutions though as I'm one of those tiling window manager people and my main file manager is literally midnight commander. I don't play any games more recent than TF2 either. Maybe you could just dual boot?
>>
>>62455944
I do dual-boot and gaymes are pretty much the only thing that keeps it on my hard drive. It still sucks having to reboot just to be able to hop on discord and have a night with the boys on some gaymes. But even then, I still have windows on my laptop and find myself using it more often than my linux desktop machine just because it's so simple.

>>
>>62455962
Thanks for your comment, now shove it up your arse. Like I said the CLI doesn't bother me, in fact I find myself using it for most things including like I said pacaur. But it's undeniably one of the biggest things keeping normies away from Linux and forever preventing the Year Of The Linux Desktop, and plus, the development philosophy of just shoving a hastily built GUI frontend on top of all those age-old legacy command line programs is not only lazy, but just plain doesn't work as well as developing with the GUI in mind from the get-go, period.

1. go to /etc/modprobe.d
2. check config files present for any case of amdgpu or radeon being blacklisted
3. open /etc/default/grub and check if amdgpu is not blacklisted by a kernel parameter. If yes, delete the offending text then run update-grub2
4. go to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/
5. check config files present, especially ones with a different, newer modification time for sections that force fglrx. Remove the said sections or files altogether
6. go to /etc/X11 and delete xorg.conf or any suspicious files from xorg.conf.d
7. optional: open /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and add amdgpu to a new line then rebuild initrd with

ext4 is a highly improved version of ext3 with new features and a completely new kernel driver. For script use I agree, sh (or rather ash/dash) is more than sufficient
But for interactive use sh isn't nice. No command history, no readline command line editing, some bashisms are easier to type, etc.
Also when bash started there wasn't a free standard shell so I think we should applaud RMS and FSF for funding and making bash happen.

Or are you talking about symlinking sh to bash? If you are talking about that you are right, but Debian doesn't have this problem.

Hi, I need help. It is the first time that I made a Linux server. Steps which are irrelevant in my opinion are not mentioned:
>>
>>62459024
> I started a VirtualBox with "vagrant" and added an user.
> I gave him sudo rights.
> Gave him Key Based Authentication.
> Forced Key based Authentication by changing /etc/ssh/sshdconfig.
>>
>>62459063
> Restart sshd service.
> enabled all outgoing ports with ufw.
> diasbled all incoming ports with ufw.
> enabled specific incoming ports with ufw: 22, 2222/tcp, 22/tcp.
>
 sudo ufw enable
.

I can't believe that everything seems to work fine. But now to my question:
> Before I did the last steps I always had to halt, start and log into my virtualbox by typing
vagrant halt
and so on. Now the terminal tells me " default: VM not created. Moving on...".
> I can connect to my server with ssh like my intention was but I am trying to understand which step exactly caused this change. And where is the server running if not in a virtual machine now? You see I still have a lot to learn but would appreciate a little bit of help. Thank you!

Yes, but it doesn't take a high-quality community to tell you if a project is active or not.

What y'all niggas use tmpfs'es for? Got a decent amount of ram to spare but lack any ideas except of browser profile
>>
>>62459431
I use it for large updates. Let the package manager to a cleanup then mount tmpfs on the directory where it downloads the packages to be installed. Speeds up a process by a lot on older HDD based systems.

I used this on debian-based systems, but should work just fine on any binary based gahnoo+linux distro and even BSDs.

What programs for GNU+Linux could do this job:

So ive been using arch myself and hating on ubuntu because everytime i used it it was a buggy piece of shit and i basically need a just werkz distro

Yesterday i installed mint to fuck around and wew lad its not as buggy as freakin ubuntu

How can this be? Isnt it basically ubuntu + cinnamon?
>>
>>62459752
Maybe cinnamon uses less GPU acceleration than unity, that's why it works better. Guess other simple DEs would work better than stock ubuntu on your machine (like xfce, lxde, MATE)
>>
Friends, is it worth moving all of my machines over to Ubuntu even after the news about Canonicals financial situation worsening last week?

I'm worried about gettin everything migrated (Linux/FreeBSD shop) and then Ubuntu becoming abandonware.
>>
Some anon would mind to share its experiences about GPU passthrough? I want to do the big move but I have no experience with it and I don't know what to expect or best ways to do it.

Guys, /g/ isn't the tech satire board.

you fucked up with your le best xy mentality right before you even started.
>>
>>62459552
What do you mean by image? What do you expect out of converting an image to vector format? InkScape can trace a raster image, but it's not great for anything complex.
>>
>>62460207
wat

I mean, I researched a little before asking but I almost didn't get what I read. The plan I guess it is to use the passthrough process so if I use a VM it can share the hardware, right?

after adjusting sound with pavucontrol, my volume buttons on thinkpad dont register anymore, how can i get them to work again? running arch+i3.
>>
>>62460154
What's satire about my post? I'm genuinely concerned about the longevity of our systems, I'm not saying Ubuntu is bad, I want to use it. I'm saying Canonical is a liability and Ubuntu's future being in their hands concerns me
>>
>>62460287
Some program should handle the button presses to change the volume. Do you have a program to handle the key presses?

>dont register anymore
>anymore

I have all that in my config, it worked. But then ran pavucontrol in terminal, and the buttons don't work anymore. I closed the lid and was working on external monitor so I didn't have acces to volume buttons, so wanted to use pavucontrol.

Does i3 work on KDE? Are Qt themes less common than GTK? Makes me want to try openbox instead of KDE next if true.
>>
>>62454749
I've used Xubuntu (with XFCE) for 8 months and didn't have a single crash.

I've done a lot of configuring on my i3, but I want to switch to i3-gaps. How can i go about doing that? I don't have another wm, only a lock from where I can chose a wm. If I install i3-gaps it'll probably conflict.
