Systemd no longer wants to follow
noauto,x-systemd.automount

This seems to have started with systemd 234.
When i go to login via tty it will take he username and password but it will pause for 2 minutes, then checking the log the system is trying to mount that mountpoint despite nothing touching it. It hangs all tty's for 2 minutes until the drive is manually mounted(its a crypto disk i manually open).Am i not using the right switches?

There are parts that talk about ARM, it's different from the regular x86 or AMD64 install, but it's possible to install on ARM.

>>62418897
You can check if some systemd unit file is trying to access it by searching through the installed units in /usr/lib/systemd/system/ (might be different on your system, but not to be confused with /etc/systemd/system/).

I'd have to see your fstab exactly and your journalctl output to see what's happening exactly.

figure it out yourself. i did it by booting the stage3 with a binary kernel and figured everything out from there. there isn't much documentation on gentoo arm because of arms fragmentation

so what distro should I install

The error isn't important; I'd want to know what's causing it to try to mount it even though it has noauto.

And I said check all services, not just the running ones, because many services are static and aren't running after boot.

Ubuntu is the most documented, updated, supported, and used distro.

Use it unless you know why you don't want to. You'll thank me when you're compiling a thousand different packages on some arch box when you could've done an apt get.

Which distro you choose mostly depends on personal preference and how much you want it to just work.
For just works distros you have all of the ubuntu flavors and mint. For mostly works you have opensuse, fedora, debian and solus. For super customization you have arch, gentoo and void. There are tons of other distros but those are some of the more common ones, distrowatch has a pretty good search function that lets you select things like prefered init.

I have a SSD, that has the home folder and other things, and a HDD, which has media and files. I know that the SSD is encrypted because I have to enter a password during the boot. But I don't know if the HDD is encrypted.

I ask because I plan on installing another distro. I'll just move the files from SSD to HDD if the HDD is not encrypted.

MAC addresses are meant to be unique to each connection device (like every usb wifi adapter and every ethernet card has their own). A big government agency or maybe a dedicated hacker could use it to track you, but you can randomize it or just change it through software

Just how fucking friendly they have to be so they call Ubuntu from the Windows Store "Linux" when it literally contains no Linux?

MS did their implementation of a Linux subsystem, using clean room engineering only and supposedly no code from kernel.org. Windows Store Ubuntu/Suse/whatever are not Linux, not GNU/Linux maybe "GNU/NT".

do the cryptsetup one. it's also in the wiki
it goes like this:
create your preferred partition
cryptsetup that partition
cryptsetup open it
mount the mapped decrypted partition
mount the boot (if you use boot)
chroot and pacstrap pacman
make sure to add the proper cryptshit into your /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and your etc/default/grub

I used to see a lot of hate towards Manjaro (about outdated packages and security flaws) but recently I've seen a lot of people recommending it.

>>
>>62426977
Manjaros packages are like 2-4 weeks behind Arch.
Manjaro doesn't have any security flaws, their forum, however has some SSL problems, which were solved in a pretty incompetent way.
Manjaro is good for normies who like to use the AUR and don't want to worry about breakage. There are some cool prericed community editions like Manjaro with bspwm or i3.
tl;dr Arch for lazy people

If I run the program with MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=3.0, it somehow magically seems to work, but it throws a million warnings. I'd love to have glsl3.3 support for my vmware windows client, but it doesn't support 3d at all if I try to run it with this same trick.

One of the easier ways to get an i3 environment up-and-running. And installation is more straightforward as a whole.

Otherwise, literally no reason to use it.

And to be perfectly accurate: the most difficult part of the Arch installation is partitioning. Hell, it's the most difficult part of any modern Linux installation. Once you sit down and really try to understand partitioning, you'll realize that the rest of the Arch installation guide truly is just copy-and-pasting and that its difficulty is WAY overblown.

I'm switching over to using LibreOffice fulltime on my laptop running Arch. I generally have no problems with it, but how is autocorrect supposed to work? I was updating Xubuntu when I plugged in AC power and it kept asking me to restart. I'm a new linux user and I thought it might be apart of the update process.. so I did so.

Now when I start Xubuntu I get a bunch of text and "Kernel Offset: Disabled
end Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0)"

What should I do from here? Not much in the way of files I'm concerned over, but being able to recover some would be nice.
>>
>>62429152

Boot into your Xubuntu installer, select "Try Xubuntu" and copy your files over to an USB flash drive.
As for your error, no idea what you even did, sounds like you fucked something up during the install. Did you reboot during the installation process? The likelihood of something becoming fucked up during an update is minimal, since you shouldn't be getting any "new" versions of software.
>>
>>62429188
I hadn't updated in months. Not sure what caused it, might not even be related to the update but whatever, I still love xubuntu.

I feel like this is just an exercise in frustration since all you want to do is say systemd is terrible, rather than figure out solutions.

noauto and systemd.automount have not been removed. There have been no issues that have popped up on Github or elsewhere. The issue -- assuming it's real and you're not just a samefagging troll -- is likely hidden in your journalctl output, which you refuse to share. That's fine; just don't shit up the thread and stop asking for help.

>policykit
Sudo is great because it has memory.
Use sudo before a command, sudo asks for password, then you have 5 minutes or so to use sudo again without asking for password
Policykit sucks balls and it's a travesty it's incorporated so deep in the Linux gui. It keeps asking for password, it's shit!

>quick, add this printer/hardware/share/port in firewall/whatever
Linux is shit for this too. You may have a perfectly tuned system but in real world conditions something happens and you have to change something.
In other OS you simply click some shit and shit usually works, in Linux you have to frantically type commands and the other person looks you with pity

>color management
It's shit. Cups is pretty good, better than the Windows printing system but once you need color accuracy it all comes tumbling down.
Color profiles in Linux and their intergration with programs and printers sucks.
>>
>>62431212
as I said, xdg-open checks which DE you're running. you can just open the xdg-open script and you'll see what I mean. it tries to determine if you're running KDE, Gnome, XFCE or whatever, then calls whatever method the DE uses (for example kde-open if it detects KDE). this means that if you're running KDE you can change it using the normal KDE settings, if you run Gnome you change it there and so on.

open source software gets patched quicker, and there's less loopholes because there's autists constantly checking everything
hackers also write less malware because of the first one, and it's much easier to exploit windows (see NSA tool leak)
it's not really anything inherent to the kernel or OS themselves

How do I unfuck the free AMDGPU drivers on KDE Neon?
After trying out the proprietary ones and finding out that those suck, I uninstalled amdgpu-pro
But now my system refuses to boot without nomodeset
Sorry if I'm a retard, but I could really use some help right now
>>

In Debian at least bash tab completion is specified (among other places) in /usr/share/bash-completion/completions/ssh. Inside this directory there is a ssh file. The file that sources this location is /etc/profile.d/bash_completion.sh

You could make your own bash completion functions by studying these file but in my opinion don't bother.

Is there a tutorial for Linux starting from scratch to building a LFS system? Arch Wiki requires me to open 100+ tabs and I kind of lose control soon after. What I am looking for is an organized and structured guide.

Something like this but for the entire Linux:

If you have a spare hard drive you could theoretically encrypt after the install by dding an image of your installed hard drive to the other hard drive, then encrypting the os drive then dding the image back but it's easier to do it at install.

If you use systemds dns resolver it defaults to googles dns. Also they integrated an http server a while back, they probably think an init system should have a web interface.

>pointless differences between distributions
That statement says so much about the systemd teams mentality. They really believe that all the distros should be the same and that one implementation of GNU/Linux should do everything. I hate that mentality, for so long we have benefited from specialized distros and even general ones with different designs allowing you to get whats perfect for your use but now they want us to be windows.

Autofs does what you want though, it mounts the drive when you want to access it. Why are you so opposed to using something that will solve your problem? If you really still want to be able to mount things from fstab properly then switch to a non-systemd distro.

What I don't get is how anyone takes their side.
Is there even a single user in these threads who have actually benefited from systemd?
The very few who would actually have experience using it in detail I can only imagine that if they like it they're comparing it to older init systems other than openrc or are bash-illiterate and think systemds own language is "user friendly"

Is there really anyone sitting here right now saying
>I just love knowing that my PID1 is built with gnome users in mind and nobody else, and that my kernel panic surface is about 10 times greater than it needs to be
I just don't get it.

Are the systemd supporters all just noobs trying to fit in and sound like they know more than they do?
Are these the same people who are anti-GNU? Because it sometimes feels like its the same crowd.

R9 290 and an RX 560. They both work if they are plugged in separately, but not together.
>>

>>
>>62432297
You're assuming systemd isn't broken. That's your problem.
Instead of being angry with us why don't you try getting angry at systemd?

How braindead do you have to be to actually expect a bunch of people who (clearly) dislike systemd to be able to help you with your very specific problem?

I don't have it running. What the hell do you want me to do?
We aren't your personal tech support team. Go ask somewhere else.
>>
>>62432349
Nope, its all up to date. The R9 seems like its broken, it freezes the Xorg randomly, but it still boots up and works until that if it's the only card. If I swap it with a new card and plug it in the secondary slot of does that.

Autofs has nothing to do with systemd. autofs is a daemon designed to automatically mount things when they are used and then unmount them based on a timer. Don't confuse autofs with systemds automounts.

Anyone know what Ubuntu fags should do when they reach the part of this that needs e4crypt?
I tried apt install e4crypt, doesn't seem to exist.

The command before that
sudo tune2fs -O encrypt /dev/sdb1
tune2fs 1.42.13 (17-May-2015)
Invalid filesystem option set: encrypt

doesn't work either. Not sure why not. This is Ubuntu 16.04.3.

When using "vi-mode" in readline are there any more efficient hotkeys for entering command mode other than Esc?

I know there are alternatives, Shift+arrow keys for instance, and also I think shift+ins.

But those are almost just as awkward and far away as the escape key. Is there nothing closer to the home row
>>
>>62433701
Just found ctrl+3 which is significantly better. But can we even better? It's a pretty important hotkey I don't see why it shouldn't be very close by and comfortable to use

Is there any way to switch focus between windows on i3wm? Like alt+tab on Windows.

I just want to be able to in case I have a window on top of the other in the same workspace, place the one I want at the front.
>>
>>62433930
Yes but i3 was made for tiled windows not floating windows that are one on top of the other.
So in tiling mode you have hotkeys that cycle the windows and it reuses those same hotkeys for floating windows. So two floating windows on top of each other you can switch which one is on top.

However, one thing you can't do (as far as I know) is put a floating window beneath a tiled window. If a floating window is covering a tiled one then all you can do is move it out of the way, or tile the floating window
>>
>>62433930
>>62434073
I should also point out that it's actually kind of nice. At first it feels like a lack of feature, but you quickly get used to being able to float a window for the purpose of keeping it always on top of the tiled windows. I had to use a mac recently and found myself missing that behavior, wishing I could activate a window in the background and type in it without actually bringing it to the front
>>
>>62433701
>>62433738
Aha!
Ctrl+[
it works in both vim and readline vi-mode, I don't know why I didn't know about this sooner, so much more convenient than Esc.
>>
>>62434267
Yeah that shit's oldschool, there's a lot of them depending on the terminal/keyboard modes I don't understand. ^a and ^e for home/end and things.
