Hey guys,
I would like to jump on the linux wagen.
What kind of version should I get my hands dirty with at the start? I am really confused with all those versions available - Ubuntu, Arch, Debian, Kali...etc. Any difference?
I got an old HP laptop that suffers from Vista, just lying around - it should be a good cure for it and hopefully help me learn...

Ubuntu: it's based on Debian and designed for the average user, so it will probably work out of the box.
Arch: The opposite of Ubuntu. Comes barebones. It is kind of a DIY distro were you configure everything yourself. Packages are bleeding edge. There are Installers which do some of the configuration for you, but don't expect everything to work out of the box
Kali: Collection of Tools for pentesters. Only use if you are an pentester

Other distros you may want to use:
Fedora, OpenSuse
Just try one. Ubuntu is a good start. I suggest to use Cinnamon as your Desktop Environment. It is very Windows like and works and looks good without configuration. There is a flavor of Ubuntu that has it preinstalled

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Thank you for the kind replies.

I have some background with programming and system knowladge but it is quite limited.
I am thinking about changing to Linux to expand my reach with different aspects since I have been of Windows this whole time.
I am not looking for a replacement but rather a new expirence and challenge.
So what comes in mind:
1. I don't want to be spoon-fed and try a windows-similar distro. What should I try first? (that's eliminates Ubuntu I guess?)
2. What is the difference between flavors and DEs?

1) Install Arch or /g/'s favorite meme distro. I run Hannah Montana Linux and Black Arch.
2) Distros have a base kernel, packages, libraries and other such stuff added on top. Someone just took the time to create a list of software and then create an installer with the software prepackaged.

It's more friendly than Gentoo.

>>62408389
Pretty nice source based system (like Gentoo) with many neat things. Much stuff is written in bash, even the package manager, which makes it easy to hack the whole thing to your needs.

>>
>>62408243
First try a net installer, or netinstall. Is any barebones installation of a distro. Do't go for Arch, go either for Ubuntu Server or Devuan.

As you are a programmer the proper difference between DEs is at the core the selection of bundled software, but for normies would be the "look and feel". You can make any DE yourself by selection window managers, file managers, etc.

Also check the proper way of programming in a GNU/Linux environment https://pastebin.com/SRZakc07

Anyone using neovim? What plugins do you use if any?
Are all vim plugins compatible?

I just want to have a simple setup with the project tree (I think nerdtree does this?), nice tabbing (maybe just need to learn buffers), some kind of way to debug/lint if relevant to language.
>>
>>62408426
>>62408409
Is it one of the system's that "just werk". im building a budget PC, that i intended to use for both learning Linux and gaming (not sure if im just gonna tough it out with WINE or go Dual boot, or do a GPU pass through) and so far it seems like VOID would be the best to do it with, but ill take any advice people are willing to give.
>>
Does anyone here run a comfy dual-boot setup where you can just pick up where you left off, regardless of which OS you booted from?
Like having Firefox profiles, qbittorrent data and stuff like that all synced between GNU/Linux and Windows?

Is something like this doable?
>>
>>62408389
Pure source based distro, maybe is like gentoo in some areas but is more flexible and barebones (yes, is possible). Pretty nifty if you are a developer actually, as you can track every package that goes in your computer and other magic tricks.
>>
>>62408455
install ubunut
>>
GPU pass through is a meme to trick Wintards into Loonix and nobody on /g/ ever managed to make it work, proof me wrong.
>>
>>62408455
Well, you do need to have some knowledge before you try SMGL.
I suggest you start with Devuan (it's Debian without systemd, you don't want systemd obscuring everything if you want to learn stuff).
>>
>>62408455
SMGL is the opposite of what you call "out of the box", the wizards by no means pretend to invite people new to the world of GNU/Linux to this distro. Even to use wine you would need to know a trick to use qemu with 32 bits to make it work for 32 bit binaries.

Go for Ubuntu.

Because even with an UEFI system and SSD it will still take more than 10 seconds from shutdown to desktop. Only retards would wait that long to switch between simple programs.

The only valid reason to have two operating systems installed on one computer is if you boot into one of them only for an hour or so and only once a day.

hey all, i have some experience with linux (used it as my main OS for a number of years about 5 years ago) and I'm comfortable working with the terminal and all with both arch and debian. I'd really like to move back to linux as my main OS, but I need windows for some applications for work. I know that running windows in a VM with a gpu passthrough is a good option, but I've never worked with this configuration before. Any advice or tips? I'd really like to just get up and going, dont mind using something like debian, xubuntu, or whatever to speed the process along
if it matters id be passing an nvidia gpu through, which iirc ill have to change some setting to lie to the gpu to tell it it isn't in a virtual environment (thanks nvidia), is this correct? also, ill be using windows 8.1 as the virtual windows OS, if that matters.

Hi everyone, I just installed linux as a VM. I decided on debian, seeing as it has a lot of derivatives.

I am studying system engineering and I am in my first year, programming in C for now; then later java, AFAIK. The pace is sort of slow in academia, so I decided to use my free time to expedite my learning.

I have downloaded some online resources about learning the inner workings of linux and using the shell to maneuver and manipulate elements of the system.

Ultimately my question is this: What task or exercises can I do to practice? What does a linux system administrator do on a daily basis?

Thanks in advance.
>>
>>62409724
>What does a linux system administrator do on a daily basis?
Nothing. Running cron jobs which run shell scripts that do work, drinking coffee, scratching balls.
>>
>>62409698
id be installing on another disk alongside my current windows install, wouldn't be fully switching until everything was working. I'd really like to move back to linux as my main OS, really it's just one or two programs holding me over on the windows side, as well as a few games. Beyond that though there's really not much, and I dont like the direction windows is headed in, or a lot of "mainstream" software, etc. I've always had a good experience with linux as well and I like the idea of FOSS software, and I'd like to support it. So yeah, i think it's worth the risk.

Looks like I will be installing gentoo.
Two more inquiries:
1) Would writing a script "cd direc1/direc2/direc3" then assigning an alias for it and using it as a keyword to shortcut directories be a a very basic form of 'bash scripting'?

2) What is the threshold of knowledge needed in a programming language before you advertise it on your CV/resume? If you could answer specifically (what task) I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

The lines in .Xresources look like this:
!#include ".colors/tango"
!#include ".colors/desaturated"
!#include ".colors/redish"
#include ".colors/blueish"

What command could I add to the script for it to get to the uncommented line that looks like this
#include ".colors/<name>"

I'm starting to suspect that most of the anti-Stallmanites are not really hobbyist computer users.
They're either disgruntled IT workers or people who switch from windows for practical reasons like not wanting to pay or get viruses, or to do hosting.

I bet they're all the same people who started out here getting mad when things didn't "just works" like the OS is supposed to bend over backwards for them.

I just find it very difficult to believe that anyone who switched to GNU/Linux for the same reasons as me (wanting to learn, wanting to tinker with stuff, and being frustrated at all the software on Windows that thinks its smarter than you, and inefficient or non-existent software upgrades, and just generally wanting to get closer to how computers actually work)
could ever be philosophically opposed to a movement which wants to improve all of those things and also make it more difficult for companies to lock you into rigid software whose only motivation for being developed is to administer malware, spy on users, or make money some other way.

I just don't get it. And now I'm actually starting to not believe it. I don't believe you people are the same breed at all, or you have some fundamental misconceptions about the free software movement.

<- Here's an example of what I want. I wanna be able to see my desktop/background and actually freely resize the window to whatever size I like (if I can do it with the mouse too, would be perfect). The $mod+R does not seem to do this, all apps keep taking the whole screen space.

I don't mind not having maximize/minimize buttons because shortcuts for that are better. But I just need to be able to resize any window freely. My apps cover the whole background.

sudo apt-get install kde-plasma-netbook

apt-cache search PATTERN

> ani Stallmanites
> philosophically opposed
I think it's more likely that people on this board who try to shout down the rabid stallmanists just take extreme argumentative stances because they don't like being told what to do and are too lazy for rational arguing.
It comes down to two things, where you want to allocate your mental resources (freedom vs convenience, and as we know people are far more likely to choose the latter, if this surprises you you are delusional) and moral authoritarianism.
Think of it like any other religion. People can swear by the good book and the moral guidelines it espouses but how many people actually follow them? Even priests molest alter boys.
Once again, if you really find this hard to believe then you are out of touch with reality.

Nah, no need to connect to those services, just wanted a chat app that is free, crypto, and has most whatsapp features, like sending media files.

Connection to whatsapp was through libpurple so I imagine you can, but remember whatsapp is a proprietary app and the application and the network is owned by facebook
>>
>>62416855
>whatsapp is a proprietary app
If I use free software to access the network, does it really matter?
>network is owned by facebook
I know, but if I don't have to link any personal info (that includes my phone number), does it matter?
Would it be possible to connect throught Tor?

Everything depends on how much of your privacy want to keep. By using free software you protect much of your privacy (and even security), but it still depends of how much data the network requires from you.
I for example am setting Mutt, the email client, to connect to a gmail acount. The email client will prevent nasty things like pixel tracking and XSS, but still relies on google and how much data from you will require to set and maintain a google account. And they track IPs.

Sure, many people use gmail, but this shit is so insecure, like, I've got hacked my gmail account, and still asks for a phone, which compromises even more. Whatsapp also requires stuff like this, and hacking your whatsapp is one step towards hacking more things from you. So, you trade convenience for security.

I wish we could have more people into free software, would make the world more secure.
>>
>>62416905
Btw, don't rely on Tor for private communication. Like, everything you do is transparent to the exit node, and many exit nodes belong to the NSA.

runit > systemd < openrc

so why does any distro use systemd?
>>
>>62416912
Hello slackguy
>>
>>62409521
If I may,

Although the developers of Linux, the kernel, are contributing to the free software community, many of them do not care about freedom. People who think the whole system is Linux tend to get confused and assign to those developers a role in the history of our community which they did not actually play. Then they give inordinate weight to those developers' views.
Most operating system distributions based on Linux as kernel are basically modified versions of the GNU operating system. We began developing GNU in 1984, years before Linus Torvalds started to write his kernel. Our goal was to develop a complete free operating system. Of course, we did not develop all the parts ourselves—but we led the way. We developed most of the central components, forming the largest single contribution to the whole system. The basic vision was ours too.
In fairness, we ought to get at least equal mention.

Because Redhat makes money and they can push everyone around clearly.
>>
>>62417218
it's because of support from systems that run that init system. Many big companies run distros with systemd as an init system because the company that backs said distro is offering support for that distro, i.e. RedHat and RHEL.
>>
>>62417218
I'll tell you my theory when a fanboy comes bitching "muh systemd" and we need to shut his mouth
>>
>>62417218
Poettering and Sievers were Red Hat software engineers who were tasked by Red Hat to make something different/better than Canonical's Upstart init system. The reason why those were the main two players on the field (along with sysvinit as the common ancestral init system) was because of Not Invented Here syndrome: the big players wanted to be sure they had their own init system that was good for them and fit their needs, rather than bolstering any existing init systems.

Systemd no longer wants to follow
noauto,x-systemd.automount

This seems to have started with systemd 234.
When i go to login via tty it will take he username and password but it will pause for 2 minutes, then checking the log the system is trying to mount that mountpoint despite nothing touching it. It hangs all tty's for 2 minutes until the drive is manually mounted(its a crypto disk i manually open).Am i not using the right switches?

So I go this shitty laptop running hybrid graphics (intel+nvidia) and I need to switch the nvidia off completely. How do I do it ? What drivers do I use?Basically this stops me from dropping windows right now.
>>
>>62417842
If it's an encrypted disk that you manually open, why include
x-systemd.automount
?

From what I can tell, that just means "mount when it gets accessed by systemd (usually when fsck is run)". If you don't actually want it mount, why include that option?
>>
>>62418117
It's in your BIOS.
>>
>>62418161
That switch should overlook the drive until something attempts to access that mountpoint,in fstab..
I want it to mount after i have taken care of the crypto. So how it used to go was i would login, decrypt the drive, and then the programs that use it would trigger the x-systemd,automount when it needed data from it.
Nothing access that drive except certain programs that are manually started.

Unless i've been mistaken.
>>
>>62418214
The number at the end of that line on your fstab is a 0, right?

Noob here. Wiki has been down for 3 days...so that's my excuse for asking -
What distro should I use first?
I'm familiar with some programming in R and python and I want to move to the open source world and also develop a better understanding of how computers work in the background. Is Ubuntu too easy, or will it give me a good flavor? I literally don't know if gentoo is a good idea or a meme to fuck noobs over. Or what about Arch?
If I fuck up on the install can I turn my laptop into a brick?

Thanks guise

I want to make a script that i can call via my file manger to use a command, i want to use mpv to open an iso device.
The command is mpv -disk-device=$file.
How do i make this script and call on it with the "open with" tab of the file manager.
Just make a script with mpv --disk-device=$file ? and then set it to "open with"?

Hmm. Is there a startup service you've recently activated that might be trying to access the drive? Perhaps from a newly installed program?
>>
>>62418632
None that i can see, all the running services dont access this device at all.
>>
>>62418467
Any network installation without selecting a desktop environment will be better than Arch. If you want a challenge go for Devuan netinstall or Ubuntu Server.

I have a music folder, and a portable media player, which is essentially another folder. How can I run a command which will delete the files from the second folder which no longer exist in the music folder, and add the ones which are present in the music folder but not the second folder?

Something like rsync? I just want to save having to copy everything every time

Well, as a non-answer, you can look into autofs, which effectively does the same thing as x-systemd.automount.

Cheers lads,

sudo rsync -r -v --ignore-existing --delete src dst

did the trick.
