If you want help:
>Assemble parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - If you need multithreading
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use, not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 or Vega 56 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Good fucking luck even getting a VEGA right now

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM, 3200 MHz is ideal

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor

This is in response to one of the last posts in the last thread. I'm the guy upgrading, likely getting the 1060 and deciding whether or not to upgrade cpu/mobo

>Ryzen Card

I think you may have misunderstood, Ryzen is the cpu

>Upgrade my cpu or not, should I OC? i5 3570k

Doi dude, I'm surprised you hadn't already, you already have the motherboard for it. It's free performance. All you have to do is watch one video on youtube and it's that easy. Preferably watch one using the same motherboard manufacturer as you so you can navigate the bios, then google average overclock settings for your specific cpu then adjust from there since every cpu overclocks slightly different.

my response:

Mistype, not misunderstood. Sorry I'm just got the term mixed up since we're talking both cpu and gpu. My bad.

Yeah, I'm terribly ignorant on OC, I've always been afraid I'll fry my component or something, but it seems much easier than I believed. Is my mobo really not that bad? I honestly figured it was a pos lol, I got it for so cheap when I needed an emergency replacement.

But ok, I'll do that once I get better cooling, since I'm currently using the stock heatsink and fan (my hyper 212 broke a while back). Or is it safe to do it even with stock cooling?

Also will OCing my cpu make it able to handle my wishes? which just as a reminder for the new thread are high/ultra gaming on most if not all games currently and hopefully for the next year (maybe 2? medium would be exceptable) at 1080p

Yeah I figured, could you recommend a cooler for the i5 3750k for OCing? Also would OCing said cpu along with 16gb DDR3 ram and a 1060 (gpu I'm upgrading too) be able to handle most current games on high/ultra and hopefully continue to do so for most games that come out in the next year or two (medium would be acceptable though).

So since the guy who was helping me out last thread seems to have gotten off, I'm going to repost my situation

I'm upgrading, not building from scratch. I'm currently running a i5 3570k with 16 gb DDR3 ram, mobo is the ASRock Z75 pro 3, gtx670. My goal is to be able to play most if not all current games on high/ultra at 1080p and hopefully be able to keep doing it with new games for the next year or two (though medium would be acceptable). I came in thinking I'd get the i5 7600k, the 1050ti, 1060, or maybe 1070 and a mobo that supported both and is decent build quality while being affordable.

Budget is about 800, but hoping to manage to stay in the 600-700 range.

So in the last thread I've learned that the 1060 is likely adequate for what I'm looking for, or at least that the 1070 doesn't seem worth the huge price difference.

I also found out that if I get a new cpu/mobo that I need to get brand new ram too, which sucks, I also was told by several people (but still looking for more definitive answers) that if I OC my current cpu it should be able to meet the things I'm setting out for. Looking for what would be a good cooling system for my cpu as I'm currently using stock.

Also is my mobo ok to run the 1060? I really don't know much about mobo's but I'm worried just because it was a cheap one I bought as a replacement for one that broke. I was told no earlier but just want to be sure.

Any help much appreciated.

B350 boards also have the ability to support AMD crossfire and often have better features than the A320 boards.
Even if you're not overclocking, I'd look into the B350 boards just for the improved featureset

>>62326542

What I'm beginning to consider to do, I just prefer definitive answers, and I keep getting vague ones like this instead of someone saying 'yes your cpu will be run most anything fine for the next year or two' or something lol.

Still baffles me that my pc, which is almost 5 years old, can be brought up to play todays games on ultra for only 300 bucks.

i would add mobo compatibility (atx, micro, whatever) and how many fans you can slap onto the front top and back but is good

Guys, google has failed me.
Say I want to heavily RGB my build, and my motherboard has a built in RGB control software like Asus' Aura, or MSI's Mystic Light.
The motherboard only has 1 RGB header. Are the RGB elements of the fans controllable from the normal 4Pin fan headers, or does it NEED to be connected to the RGB header? I'm so confused right now.

Alright.
Intel:
K-series: unlocked for overlclocking
T-series: low power consumption/lower clock speeds
Celeron: entry level basic bitch
Pentium: Same as Celeron until G4560 or better/ In which case, it's a discounted i3
i3: dual core, 4 thread. Good for entry level gaming
i5: 4 core, 4 thread. basic gaming. Completely outclassed by similarly priced AMD Ryzen 5 CPUs
i7: 4 core, 8 thread CPU for maximum FPS when gaming.

nvidia:
First 1 or 2 numbers is the series. So the current line is the 10 series.
The models go up in number to be better.

Going to try one more time, I have am i5 3570k, 16gb ram, ASRock z75 pro3 mobo and getting gtx 1060 gpu. If I buy the Cryorig H7 will I be able to OC my 3570k? Also once OC'ed will my cpu, along with other specs mentioned be able to handle current games (and hopefully the next year or two) on high/ultra (medium acceptable for future games) at 1080p?

Would be amazing if that ends up being the case.
>>
>>62326971
I got the AMD Fury X mixed up with the nvidia Titan X Pascal.
You know what I meant though
>>
>>62327048

Your OC 3570k will be good for gaming for at least 2 years. Some games can take advantage of more cores, like BF1, but that doesn't mean yours is going to do bad. Catch my drift?

If anything were to screw you out of 1080p gaming with that cpu OC it would be the gpu. 1060 will be fine for 1080p if you're unhappy with the performance 1/2 years down the line just drop settings.

Yes H7 will be good for overclocking

Depends on the title, my 1080 gives me 120+ fps on all esports shit like csgo, overwatch, LoL, etc at 1440p. But I can also get it on max settings on older titles like The Evil Within, Bioshock, etc. On new AAA games I can usually get about 100 on like ultra, but depends on the game. You need a 1080ti to consistently push for over 120 on max for 1440p.

Okay /g/ I haven't bought a new computer in forever so I'm kinda out of the loop on newer hardware so any help would be appreciated. Budget is ~$1k. Won't really be playing a lot of games as evident from the GPU but still wanted to know if there are any improvements to be made since $1k is a bit of a money after all so I want the best possible for that money.

>CPU
Going past 1600 for Ryzen seems to give diminishing return in performance compared to the cost and OP seems to agree with me.

>CPU Cooler
Necessary or is stock good enough? Not really going to do any hardcore overclocking.

>Thermal Compound
Just got some cheap one guess it'll do.

>Motherboard
Seems good?

>Memory
Could probably do with 8 GB but might as well fall for the meme. 3200 MHz isn't much more expensive compared to lower clock speeds so might as well get it since I heard Ryzen benefits from higher RAM clock speed and it's supported by motherboard.

>Storage
My current installation of Arch is ~150 GB so a 250 GB SSD should be good enough and then 1 TB HDD for storing files.

>GPU
Maybe not the best performance I can get for the money but from what I heard AMD cards work better with the open source driver on Linux and I won't really be playing the latest games at max or mining cryptocurrency.

>Case
Kinda clueless about cases so just got something cheap, seems to have good reviews.

>PSU
Full modular means no cables but I assume the components include the required cables? Maybe a stupid question but last PSU I bought had cables attached.

Anything else? Extra fans (room for two more in case)?

you don't need thermal paste, the stock cooler for r5 1600 comes with one pre-applied.

that gpu is seriously overpriced, considering that a ~$140 gtx 1050ti outperforms it (maybe use nvidia's proprietary drivers?). few days ago there were some rx 580 4gb in stock for ~$260 but i think that's gone now. if you don't play games you could even get rx 560.
yes the psu includes all the cables you need. it's VERY IMPORTANT that you DO NOT reuse any cables from your previous build if you don't want to fry your pc.

My 7700k only asks 1.104v during stress tests at 4.6ghz according to HWINFO. Do I have some sort of golden chip or something? Idle it's at 1.176v right now. Still testing OCs so haven't tried 4.9 or 5ghz yet.

Vcore set to 1.200v at the moment, still lowering it every now and then to try what the least vcore I can put is. I'll probably hit the limit soon. My BIOS sucks ass so don't ask me about CLL PLL or whatever.

Literally in your shoes. I bought the 1060 6GB (don't go 3GB) for my i5-3570k (I have some Noctua fan, but I get 60° average temps).

Literally running Warframe in maximum settings. Running Witcher 3 in Ultra (hairworks off) and have 0 lag, and above 60 FPS.

YES. It will work just fine. Only for 1080p though. Anything higher will need a new CPU and probably monitor.

I'm looking to build a NAS for home use to store movies and shit. I don't need anything fancy just something that works and keeps my data safe. Will probably use FreeNAS or NAS4free. What hardware should I be looking at?
>>
>>62327550
This guy is an idiot. Anything above $150 is a waste. Most tower cases, especially full-tower are never seen (too big to put on a table). Prioritize features, color and only AFTER that you look for smaller aesthetics (that's where the extra money comes in).

With ZFS? 4 RAM slots, that's for sure. You'll be using them. You'll want ECC if you can get it.
Of course, Supermicro boards are your go-to, though some "consumer" boards offer server chipsets as well.
Goes without saying you want more SATA, not fewer. Depending on what drives you'll put in.
If you won't be doing Plex and tinkering you can probably cheap out on the CPU.

This isn't the best place to ask these questions. There are lots of guides online. Most people here only know how to build gaming rigs, so you should ignore them.
>>
>>62331249
>4 ram slots
My bad. I'm tired You don't need 4. You need however many you want. And for ZFS you'll be needing them.

Wait a month for Coffee Lake and check the reviews for Ryzen CPUs.

From anandtech
>I have $250, What Should I Get – the Core i5 7600/7600K or the Ryzen 5 1600X?
>On performance, for anyone wanting to do intense CPU work, the Ryzen gets a nod here. Twelve threads are hard to miss at this price point. For more punchy work, you need a high frequency i5 to take advantage of the IPC differences that Intel has.
>For gaming, our DX12 titles show a plus for AMD in any CPU limited scenario, such as Civilization or Rise of the Tomb Raider in certain scenes. For e-Sports, and most games based on DX9 or DX11, the Intel CPU is still a win here.

Intel if you don't need multithreading.
Which is what exactly, Blender? Nobody renders on the CPU.
x264/x265 encoding? Sure, okay.
And that's pretty much it.

What time of the year is best for buying a new pc?
Assuming I buy parts that have not been just released.

I'd think middle of summer as some sellers might lower prices to not completely fall into the summer hole.
>>
>>62331959
I'd say if you're building for gaming, it depends on when new graphics cards come out. While they may not be advancing as quickly as in the past, the differences between generations still tend to be very significant, so you probably wouldn't want to buy something when it's close to being replaced by a faster card at the same price point. If you want to get the most out of it, you should probably buy close to release, but after a month or 2 when the prices are somewhat settled, custom-cooled models are available and any issues will have made themselves known.
>>
>>62331959

Get a G4560.
If you demand a stronger integrated GPU than an HD 630, go AM4 and get Bristol Ridge. FM2 is totally dead.
You don't need 16GB of RAM.
You don't need a specialized cooler for what you'll be doing.
Mini ITX is more expensive than mATX. Consider whether you actually need it.
>>
>>62333159
My bad, go for a G4600. 4560 only has HD 610.
>>
>>62333159
is bristol ridge even out yet? youre right with the ram, 8 is probs enough. i dont mind paying a little more for mitx since having that smaller form factor is quite nice. the cooler was more to make sure i can keep it as quiet as possible since its small and all.
>>
>>62333214

Bristol Ridge is released recently to the consumer market, not sure if is out in Australia yet though
>>
>>62333214
>is bristol ridge even out yet?
It was just released.
To be clear, I'm understanding "old school" games to mean games from around 2006 and before.
If you mean games from after that, AMD's iGPU will start choking just like Intel, and you'd be better off with a discrete solution.
>>
>>62333248
its weird to clarify since now that i think about it even games like bioshock are 14 years old.
>>
>>62333268
No. Bioshock is 2007.
Anyway, if you don't have Bristol Ridge in Australia and demand iGPU, you'll have to settle for G4600.
>>
>>62332696
What's so bad about it? I've been annoyed myself when shit doesn't quite work out in terms of having enough space or not having easy access to something, but in the end I'd rather do it myself to make sure everything is proper and as I want it to be.

Cable management in the practical sense isn't as much about looking pretty as it is about not obviously restricting airflow and about the ease of practical maintenance and upgrade. You don't want to need to unplug fucking everything because it's a messy, tangled up ball of cables whenever you want to add another HDD or upgrade your graphics card, that shit is just annoying as fuck.
>>
>>62333109
peak psu efficiency starts at around 50% load, that's what you should be aiming for.
i.e. your system at full load will take around 350W, go for a 700W psu. that way you'll have high power efficiency when it matters and good headroom for cap aging, overclocking, etc.
1200W for a 1600X/RX470 build is a waste of power.
>>
>>62333329
I think he means that he's set for life with that.
Make a few upgrades to use a shit ton of power and he's right.
>>
>>62333329
>that's what you should be aiming for.
In a perfect world, maybe.
The efficiency curve doesn't justify spending the extra money if the price difference is anything meaningful. By the time you make your money back on the small efficiency bump, the PSU is long dead, and the PC trashed.

Some benchmarks of the AM4 Athlon X4 950 compared to the G4560

TL;DR The Athlon wins in some games and loses in some games while costing $30 less than the G4560 and having a much better upgrade path
>>
>>62333377
The G4560 seemed to do generally better in games tested.
It also comes with an iGPU, which can be important depending on what you do.

I'd wait to see more comprehensive reviews of Bristol Ridge parts before passing real judgement. But it's certainly going to be interesting to see where they lie, particularly the APUs.

I've never head a real build. A build to be proud of. A "monster" of a PC. I'm pretty much a noob and my knowledge is limited.
And I don't really have money for a beast, but I do have for the following:

Mainboard GIGABYTE GA-Z270P-D3
CPU Intel i7-7700K
GPU EVGA GTX 1080
RAM Corsair Vengeance 16GB 3000Mhz CL15*
Power supply EVGA 600W
Total cost ~$1500

1. What should I look for in a case? How do I pick a good case?
2. Should I wait for intel 8th gen? Is it a meme? Would it fit in my budget?
3. Would a Ryzen 7 1700 be better? I heard it gave lots of SIGSEGV on Linux. Is it true? I need the pc for work, is it that bad?

*couldn't find 2400Mhz on less than CL15, though fuck it, might as well go with 3000Mhz at almost the same price as a 2400Mhz CL12

If it's for gaymen then wait for the i7-8700k, same with the Mobo, I recommend the Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200Mhz, they're low profile.
And go for 750W.
Also if you gonna play at 1440p@144hz or 4K@60fps get the 1080 Ti.
Get a SSD, I would recommend the 960 EVO as it is an overkill right now.
Oh, and if you're getting the 1080 Ti get an IPS monitor.
>>

3. Shit database server
4. A 4th shitty server
All strictly for developing purposes. I could just ge more RAM and it'd work fine, but I want to upgrade anyway (have a 2nd gen i3 and integrated graphics).

I want the 1080 for gaymes. I'm tired of not being able to play anything/playing dota2 in lower res and I'm planning on 1080@144hz (possible 1440p@144hz but I'm not aiming for that currently). Also, spending less time on training meme CNNs.

>>62334045

I already have a decent SSD, I'll upgrade it later. That's why it's not mentioned.

That's an M.2 SATA SSD, not NVMe. The cheapest 500GB SSDs are around $150 whether they're a 2.5" drive or SATA M.2.

pro tip: NVMe makes no real-world difference. Boot times and load times are identical or VERY marginally faster (literally milliseconds of difference in a 15 second boot).

I have a 1TB M.2 SSD and I think it's 100% worth it. So much cleaner and easier to install than a 2.5"/3.5" drive; you just stick it in the motherboard like you would RAM.

Hey dipshit. Every problem AMD's FX chips had can now be applied to Intel's chips, particularly heat problems. Meanwhile, the new AMD Ryzen chips run really fucking cool. There's actually a 20° offset in temperature readings so people who switched from Intel chips will see a familiar number.

I mean the performance which doesn't involve unrealistic benchmarks like cinebench or some other heavily threaded shit. Basicly, just the normal everyday things which matter.

Ryzen is perfect if you absolutely need more than 4 cores for cheap. Otherwise Intel is still a perfectly valid choice for gaming and productivity tasks. This will never change.

ASRock's fan sensing (detecting 3 pin voltage control vs 4 pin pwm) can be a bit wonky. Not a meme, have you tried restarting your computer? My ASRock B250M Pro4 didn't properly detect the 3 pin fans in my case on first boot.

Also you may be able to manually switch between voltage control and PWM control in BIOS. Check your motherboard's manual or just poke around in UEFI or the FANTastic Utility (or whatever it's called).

Regarding connecting multiple fans in series: you'd have to solder or crimp wires together, which would be a pain in the ass. Worst case scenario, you could just get a fan controller than fits in a PCIe bracket like this: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4RE5VN4057&cm_re=fan_controller-_-376-001Y-00001-_-Product

Fucking why? That's retarded.

Anyway, the reason nobody's done it is because it's a pain. That fan controller I linked is like $8, I'm sure you can find another even cheaper than that.

If you really want to do your own connections though, that's perfectly alright. You'll only be able to connect one of the fan's RPM wires (I think it's usually the yellow one) if you want the motherboard to read its speed, but they should both be spinning at nearly the same speed anyway, assuming it's the same model of fan.

>Fractal Design Meshify C
What in shits is this?
>>
>>62336615
It's a nice case. Good airflow, sexy, good cable management. it's only like 90 bucks too.
>>
>>62336615
It's a Fractal Define C with a new front panel. That's literally what it is.
>>
>>62336699
It's a Define C TG with an new front panel for 90$.

The Define C is the same price though. That's what doesn't make sense to me. It's like Fractal design thinks they're general motors.
>Here's a new Cadillac ATS! We're beating the BMW 3 series with this?
>Here's the new Camaro! We cut 2 doors off the ATS and now we have a muscle car!
>oh btw, they're priced similarly
just why.
>>
>>62336806
Yeah but it's an upgrade for the same price. Better airflow, man.

you can make similar arguments about the Camaro/ATS. The Camaro has better suspension geometry, but it's still on the Alpha chassis.
It's like seeing GM's history of rebadging in another industry.

Am I retarded if I buy the Corsair 570x and then put all their shit RGB fans in the garbage and run 6 Noctua SB12s?
>>
>>62336908
yes
>>
>>62336928
I'm still probably going to do it anyway. I'd rather spend money I don't really have to than deal with bad RGB non-PWM fans.

My 5 year old Seasonic 750W PSU came with a single dual 6+2 PCIe cable and two 6 pin cables. My Vega 56 requires 8+8 connection. Can I Use the single 6 pin cable(s), and then use just the 2 pins from the dual 6+2 cable?

"Why dont u use the single dual 6+2 cable" Because it's known to cause

So get proper RGB fans like Cooler Master's Masterfan RGB series.
>>
>>62337112
nice bug. As I was saying, Because it's known to cause coil wine and not recommended to run GPU that require 225W off 1 PCIe cable

How good does a good quality psu last? Have been using it at max 70% of its max capacity for a while, but it hasn't gone over 50% the last 2-3 years out of 6 years.

Maybe he wants the glass skyscraper aesthetic without the gay lights. I know I do.
>>
>>62336884
>it's still on the Alpha chassis

And? The chassis is the base, it means literally nothing.
The '96 Mazda 121 is literally a rebadged Ford Fiesta. Sure, they look almost identical, but performance wise? Not so much.
You might as well say there's no difference between The Starry Night and Water Lilies because they're both oil on canvas.
>>
>>62337165
which would be fine. But it's a full tempered glass case and he wants to throw in the ugliest fans on the market? if they were all black, that'd be one thing, but Noctua fans are shit brown, and slightly different shit brown.
>>
>>62337125
I'm not particularly interested in RGB fans. I'd consider some white LED ones but it's not a high priority.

>>62337215
I'd be getting the redux ones so they'd be grey on grey.

Imagine is a septic tank exploded inside that skyscraper and filled it top to bottom with brown poo. That's what he wants to do.
Noctua fans perform really well. But the fact remains They are hideous.
>>62337266
Besides. There's this thing about lights, whether RGB or not.
You can turn them off!
Novel concept I know.
>>
Just buy some Silentwings 3. They're pretty good looking & they perform well.
