hi /g/

so I have a stupid question

I'm looking for suggestions for books / reference on software design. I don't care if it's called architecture or engineering or programming or whatever but what I'm looking for is why functions and classes are structured a certain ways and why. I'm hoping for language agnostic general programming problems that are common to all software languages / designs. I get this is impossible to a degree as certain things are language specific.

I don't know the correct terminology for this. It's somewhere just below design patterns. Does anyone have a word for this?

thanks

1. isolate. keep a ping to localhost, localmodem, firsthop, secondhop going in 4 seperate windows.

course of action changes a lot based on which you can continue to ping during an outage.
>>

Fell for he mutt meme and removed thunderbird completely
>>
>>62307473
Alright, localhost and localmodem are running. How do I check first & second hop?
>>
>>62307592
tracert(win32)/traceroute(*nix) to someplace on the net you lose connection to like www.4chan.org

take the next ip after your router and the next ip after that and ping those, one is likely an edge device on your isp. then keep pinging 4chan or something.

if only 4chan ping dies you know it's isp.
if isp ping window also dies you know it's router
if router ping window also dies you know it's NIC

What is this? Can I remedy it?
>>
>>62307671
>>62307473
Did some cmd work. Looks like a problem lies in the second hop. Ping requests to it time out. No pings reach it whatsoever.

That being said I'm still able to browse freely. There doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason to when the ping to 4chan starts timing out. It just happens. Sometimes it's one timeout, sometimes it's a set of five in a row.

What's the fix for this?

do you have wifi router or do you connect your pc directly to modem/router ISP provided / you bought to connect to ISP?

if it's PC -> wifirouter ->ISP router in your house then 2nd hop failure means your cable modem is the issue.

If it's PC -> ISP router in your house direct then 2nd hop is the ISP screwing up and you should complain.

Also compare pinging by FQDN vs IP to make sure it's not a DNS failure.

I'd like to interject for a moment, after which I'll answer your question with an example. What you are referring to as GRUB, is actually GNU GRUB (short for GNU GRand Unified Bootloader) and is a boot loader package from the GNU Project.

Pronounce GRUB like the English word grub listed and defined in a standard English Dictionary.

youll have to be more specific with your goals. are you saying you want to install windows alongside OSX (aka not lose anything) and use it on your windows computer, or you want to wipe OSX and ONLY use it as a windows drive?

OSX uses a different file system than windows so if you want to use it on a straight windows computer youll need to wipe the drive and convert it to their format (windows installer lets you do this very easily)

Why does EVERY single fucking browser i use get stuck at "0 seconds left" with exe files? I had this happen two times in a row now with firefox and opera, they both just flat-out refuse to finish the downloads lel

Is this a problem with my SSD or an anti virus program causing it more likely
>>
>>62310605
>>62310605
Actually scratch that it's not caused by any of the browsers i think, the whole fucking explorer locks up and doesn't react/crashes completely soon as you try to interact with any files anywhere

What the fuck lel

Am i infected? I just reinstalled win 7 the other day

What could even cause this bullshit
>>
>>62310658
how old is the drive that youre downloading onto? how much space does it have? does it just happen with .exe's or all file downloads?
>>
>>62310691
It's a 850 evo SSD, i literally just installed it roughly a day ago

Around 200gigs free rn

I tried test-downloading a 4chan banner and it seems to be getting stuck aswell, the "time left" dialogue just has a question mark now for some reason

Also when i try deleting/moving any of the useless crdownload.part files explorer crashes aswell
>>
>>62310715
>>62310715
Also worth noting is that when i had this problem earlier the only thing resolving it (ie me being able to interact with files again and download stuff at least temporarily until the problem starts again) is a hard shutdown/reboot and not just relogging
>>
LOL now when i click "save image..." it doesn't even open up the explorer/save dialogue anymore, it's just that nothing happens at all

Do i have to reinstall win7 already? Jesus fuck someone tell me there's a fix for this bullcrap
>>
>>62310715
>>62310736

if you have any other drives connected, try moving files off the SSD and then on to the SSD from the other drive

probably unrelated, but ive had an SSD that died with very similar symptons to that. all file movements freeze it to fuck. but it also took like 4 hours to install windows on that ssd so i knew it was pretty well fucked.
>>
>>62310759

do you have another drive connected?

try changing the download location for your browser, and point it to a folder on the other drive. if it downloads and opens without issue from that drive, then you know the issue is your ssd

it sounds exactly like the death of my ssd, but mine was years old. you might have gotten a bad one, or one that was returned by someone else..

i want to wipe to drive and install windows 7 on it

Do i have to change anything in my pc bios so it'll boot from the macbook ssd instead of my internal hdd or do i just plug it in and it auto chooses the pcie ssd instead of the internal hdd?
i'm not sure if my bios has the option to do that, but i can just remove the hdd completely if i have to
>>
>>62310856
>>62310856
I just relogged again and noticed that neither MSE nor most of the other stuff within autostart is being loaded up, trying to scan any file with the MSE explorer dialogue results in explorer crashing aswell now

I did what you suggested and tried downloading one of the banners to an external USB drive i had lying around and it seems to be getting stuck there aswell

Could veracrypt be causing all of this?
>>
>>62310874
well you dont want it to boot from the macbook ssd until you install windows on it

do you have install media for windows? a USB boot drive or a disk.

basically you get the bootable usb drive or disk inserted, and then you boot from the usb drive or disk. and then itll go into the windows install process and you can choose the macbook ssd and itll wipe it for you and install windows on it.

what kind of computer doesnt have a bios option to choose boot order? thats unlikely, they pretty much all have that, even the super locked down prebuilts
>>
>>62310892

>Could veracrypt be causing all of this?

no idea, but try uninstalling stuff until it stops maybe? thats really all you can do, if you dont want to try reinstalling windows
>>

>>

What the fuck is this even
>>
>>62310932
Alright so i noticed that malwarebytes was running a fuckton of services along with real time protection, rebooted now and the browsers work fine again so maybe there was some sort of conflict taking place between mse and malwarebytes's respective real time protection mechanisms

I also did an sfc /scannow and it found no integrity violatiosn, smart looks good too so i think the ssd itself is fine

The thing is that i ported an older 32bit version of firefox directly over from the old machine so i suspect the download freeze which causes the explorer chain reaction that ends up fucking the whole OS over could possibly be caused by firefox... I'll keep an eye on it closely during the next couple hours and should the download + subsequent total explorer freeze of the whole OS happen again i will either refresh firefox or re-install it completely anew
>>
>>62311117
>>62311117
Oh yeah and i should probably not have hundreds of tabs open with that particular older 32bit version of firefox methinks heh

Thing is i need to keep using it because 64bit firefox doesn't support java and any version greater than ff 51.0 (64 bit or not) doesn't either for some fucktarded reason
>>
>>62311132
Yeah chkdsk just returned fine aswell, defo purely a software problem and thus a classic elimination process right there

I'm kinda relieved at not having to return the ssd already but also pissed off at the same time at how ""small"" stuff like this can end up ruining your whole morning lel

What does an internship mean in America?
I mean, what separates it from a normal job? pay, hours, length of employment or hiring requirements?
Here, it means "in training" which means little to no pay and it is a lesser form of an education, but americans seem to have trouble getting these positions, so it must be different
>>
>>62313233
No that's what it means here too. There's just a lot of competition for some jobs, so some shit you have to get a degree, then struggle to find an internship, do their shit work for minimal/no pay in the hope it'll get you hired somewhere else later.
>>
>>62313278
wait, so you are not qualified to get a job when you have a degree?
The internship is just to suck up to companies to get a job?
I have seen threads here that claimed they were looking for people with experience to get these internships

They're basically jobs for university students, and they're typically paid pretty well. Interns at big companies in high CoL areas can make over 100k a year.
>>
>>62313310
>just to suck up to companies to get a job
yup, cant get a job without experience, cant get experience without a job. you either apply for hundreds of jobs and maybe get one call/interview just to get denied the job, or you try for an internship, which is usually free/barely paid, and hope that will be enough to put you ahead of everyone else.
>>
>>62313357
still I would like my schema to reflect this fact, like a check constraint with a function/query?
>>
>>62313310
You're thinking backwards. Most companies only open internship applications to people currently enrolled in school.

If you have a degree already you can't even get a good internship, maybe at a shit company.

Internships are basically forms of headhunting for big companies. They take interns from well known schools, watch them for a few months and then later decide if they want to hire them. They're looking for the amazing ones who they can hire full time later.

So this is what confuses me.
100k / year is a very well paid position, why call it an internship?
>jobs for university students
>>62313391
This is mostly what it is here as well.
We also have internships for unskilled labor though.
For students, you can skip an elective course and then work for free somewhere as part of your education, or get paid to work part time.
Getting a job once you have an education is not hard, but getting an internship at the right company might make it easier to keep working there.

It's a fine deal if you want a PS Vita and it's in good condition. Better if it's a first gen model.
>>

>make another int main inside the bubble sort source file

does not compute
you can use a test framework, or just add a couple of other functions that call your bubble sort function (which should not be the main function). Each function is a separate test case, you pass in your array or whatever and check whether the elements are other after calling the bubblesort function.
>>
>>62306707

also if you know a good one please post it
>>
>>62313870
>whether the elements are other
>whether the elements are ordered

you will have functions like

main()
bubbleSort(...)
test1(...) //test ordered list
test2(...) //test reverse ordered list
test3(...) //test signed numbers
...

each test is a call to bubblesort and an assert
test(){
array = [3,2,1]

sortedArray = bubblesort(array)
assert(sortedArray, [1,2,3])
}
>>
>>62313870
>>62313905
I'm actually just taking it as he wants us to make 4 separate programs, where we make a separate program for three different sorts, then for some reason make a "main" program with all three of them included. Why? I don't know, but it makes more sense than what I asked. Because otherwise it sounds inane if it isn't OOP.

Thanks for answering though.

Because light is a pain in the ass to work with on even a basic level, let alone trying to replicate all the years of painstaking improvements we've made to traditional microprocessors. At best we would be using a hybrid of old and new tech, and switching to light would only be an incremental step forward. I had pic related (ASUS X541S). It says it has 1.6 ghz CPU but can be increased at 2.48ghz is there any way to increase the processing power instead of overclocking it since the guide I've seen is mostly for ROG laptops?

I don't think the mobo has any connectors for it, so I assume its OK if I don't use it? I want all the fans to run at max anyway, I never used the case control
>>

You mean VBA then ?
>>

I know its gonna sound like I'm being an asshole, but unironically google. Someone on overclock.net I think made a really in depth AMD FX guide way back that helped me OC
>>
>>62315194
It's fine. I never use mine since I just use software for that. It's just for that particular piece of functionality, it isn't connected to anything else so you won't lose functionality aside from that if you just don't connect it.

Yes.

Alright, thanks. I already had an old PC in this case but I built it almost 5 years ago so I completely forgot it.

Here comes hoping I didn't fuck anything else up.

ifconfig eth0 down - ifconfig eth0 up ?

That just toggles it? Doesn't seem to fix the random drops though
>>
>>62315220
Then you can't do much with it, it's very limited and everybody uses it to write macros for excel so not much fun stuff planned.
Maybe you can interface it SQL code or some shit, I don't know, but it's like trying to do advanced stuff in scratch.

It's the equivalent of turning your ethernet on and off.
Maybe it comes from the DHCP lease time ? Can you set up wireshark and see if you send a DHCP request when it shuts off ?
>>
>>62315350
Install 4chan X and press 'e'
>>
>>62315371
I have my router configured to give my machine a static IP on the local network, with infinite lease time, so fairly confident that's not it.

My grandma found a phone on the street, initially she called the police (not 911 obviously, but the line for casual shit) but they were like 'keep it you old bitch', because they don't care. Anyway, shit's locked and she gave it to me with the idea that I might be able to get it unlocked (without wiping all the data), call somebody on the contacts list, and get it back to the owner.

Is there an easy way to get that shit unlocked? I tried googling around but all I get is poo in loo forums that I'm not too sure about, and I'm not about to do all kinds of crazy shit just to get some strangers phone unlocked. It's some cheap Chinese phone that runs on android, by the way.

I have a small server with 2x ethernet ports. I thought it would be good to give my VMs its own ethernet port so I plugged it all in. The VMs can connect to the internet but I can't remote connect to them anymore via vbox rdp.

I thought it was just a case of assigning a different network adapter to the VM and changing the IP I enter in the rdp client.

I am trying to find useful programming languages for engineering. Vba for excel sounds useful, but I am kinda lost.
>>
>>62315399
i guess you could try contacting the phone company that the SIM belongs to, the SIM number and IMEI should be printed on the SIM and battery compartment respectively, which identify the SIM and phone
they might be able to contact the owner
>>
>>62315399
take out the SIM card and put it in another phone and call mom or whoever seems relevant
if the owner really cared then they would have called it already
>>
>>62315474
do modern phones even store numbers on the SIM itself anymore?

Is it possible to install a custom rom on the newest fire tablet? I've read that the bootloader may have been locked, I kind of want a cheap tablet but don't like fire OS

mine does, I don't see why they wouldn't use it, it's convenient when switching phones

Why is Heaven used so much in benchmarking? Its a 8 year old benchmark and pretty much everything you can buy runs it smoothly now.

Is it because its free? does it scale really well or something? Will we still use it in 5 years time?

So my uni advices on taking a laptop with an Quadro M1200 and it is around 2000 $ but I was wondering if I wouldn't be good enough with a 1070 for 1500 $

I really dont want to go through each one and download them individually

Hmmmmm
Have you checked dmesg directly after the crash ? What does it says ?
Also, are your iptables fine (very unlikely they aren't but still)
>>
>>62315574
an advantage to using an older benchmark is that more/older things have been tested with it
it also allows for testing lower power stuff like ultrabooks, there are still a minimum requirement for benchmarking tools

I don't know the pin, so I can't even stick it an another phone. It's not 0000.
>if the owner really cared then they would have called it already
My grandma didn't find it today, she just gave it to me today (or my mom did rather). God knows how long she's been holding on to that shit. The phone was also off when she found it apparently.

Too bad I guess. The phone seems to be pretty cheap, so it's not the worst loss in the world at least. Shame about any pictures they might have had on there, I suppose, but too bad.

Depends on what you're using it for. There can be a pretty big difference between gaming and professional cards, depending on the application. They are designed for two wildly different sets of tasks. If they're suggesting you spend that much on a professional card, it does not bode well.
>>
How do I clean my work take?
>>
>>62315933
It's for VFX and I know professional card are suposed to be better than their counterpart in gaming but the M1200 is based on a 960m that's like 3 to 4 time less powerful than a 1070.

The 1070 is certainly a massively more powerful card in general, but if the applications they expect you to use are specifically designed to be compatible with professional cards, there could be some issue. I'd look into the recommended requirements pages of the applications you're going to be using.
