>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1400 - If you need multithreading
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use, not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 or Vega 56 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Good fucking luck even getting a VEGA right now

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM, 3200 MHz is ideal

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor

I'm pretty sure I can get the 1700 quite higher but I wanna run some benchmarks and play some games with these clocks to see how the performance stacks up to stock clocks on the CPU and RAM.

So, my laptop I've been using and got from cyberpowerpc for a grand just shit the bed and I need a new one for college and casual use.

But Ive been contemplating building a PC instead of getting something like a thinkpad though. And if I get a laptop, what's the best I can get for 2 grand?

Looking for a friend
>>
>>62275206
Is it just for College? Any video editing, Photo Editing, VM work, or really anything? Gaming?

Does it need to be portable?

Are you sure 2 grand is your budget?
>>
>>62275206
For 2 grand, spec-wise, probably a beefed up gaming laptop. If you want an ultra book, I highly recommend the dell XPS 15. I spent $1500 on mine and it's the best laptop I've ever used. I don't have coil whine, but others have gotten it. Dell has usually fixed that, though, with no issues.

Don't get a MacBook. Please. It's a waste of money.

I can make a pretty powerful pc build with what I've got, but I could also get an ultrabook or a p51 ThinkPad instead. This will be for everything. Gaming, CAD work (in an engineering student), essays, whatever.
>>
>>62274441
Make 2 separate orders, one on Amazon.de and one on Amazon.it:
https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/msZ47h
https://it.pcpartpicker.com/list/WhqLZ8
Total should be around 755€.
I would seriously consider an SSD though, the 850 EVO 250Gb is 90€ on Amazon.it, if you can get that and just recycle your old HDD until you can afford a new HDD for storage it would be much better.
>>
>>62275206
>>62275378

I recommend getting a cheap laptop like the T420,X230, myabe even a quadcore W520 abd shoving an SSD in it and using the rest to build a pc.

Or

Build a cute but powerful itx pc. You won't be able to take it into class, but it'll be portable enough to take between your home and dorm if you live on campus.

You can drop the x370 board for a b350 and save some cash, x370 only matters if you want sli/crossfire (2+gpus)

Your powersupply is overkill, you can easily get by with like 500-550w after overclocking. Pic related

You can save $100 by pirating windows.

With these changes you can put the money towards a 1080ti, or even just line your pockets if you want.

So would it be bad to run a high end system on a shitty monitor? I have most of my parts for my new build and I am concerned that if I try to use it on a shitty 1080p monitor the system might over-work and lessen the shelf life. I have a 1080ti and an r7 1700 ready to go, just make sure I can get everything set up before I buy my monitor.
>>
>>62276546
No. It will just be a waste of money. That is like having a V8 engine in a Honda Jazz chassis. Your engine is great but your body can only go so fast.
>>
>>62276576I mean more like assembling the PC and setting it up to make sure it works before I can buy something like a 1440p monitor ( I cant buy everything at once).
>>
>>62276613
What? No. The only thing you are wasting is the potential of your current system. You can run your system on a CRT if you wish to and it will do no harm.
>>
>>62276646

Thanks, I'm just a bit worried about expensive stuff I buy.

>>
>>62276918
I figured, which is why I asked. Might just be hot in this room, but still. You have no intake?
>>
>>62276950
I have a front intake fan but it's disconnected to keep the noise down.
>>
>>62276972
How loud is loud? I dunno if it helps the frame of reference but with 6 fans plus cooler I can play forza and set my headphones on the desk at 65% volume, and drown out my fans, I actually just checked. If I manually ramp them up though it sounds like I'm redlining an engine
>>
>>62275187
op3t has a good low light camera
>>
>>62277022
Well my sistem would be quiet even with a front fan but it doesn't even get hot enough to need an intake and my side panel has a bunch of holes that let air draft in.
>>
So I built my PC I'd say 3 or 4 months ago. These are my specs.

G4560
RX 570
8 GB RAM (2x4 GB)

I'm thinking of replacing the CPU but now I see Ryzen is a thing and I don't know what to do, and what would make more sense in terms of cost efficiency.

If I get a Ryzen 5 CPU, I need to replace the mobo.

Should I go i5 to keep costs down or just wait to replace my mobo and get a Ryzen?
>>
>>62277049
Damn. Maybe it's just too hot here. It's about 40C so I guess the computer is room temp. I can't wait for the cold. Are there different kinds of fans? I only ask because I'm using hand me down red fans, I eventually want a decent color
>>
>>62277172
I would go Ryzen because the motherboard has more longevity. AMD has committed to the AM4 socket through 2020, meanwhile, Intel's LGA1151 socket is being replaced. It may be more toupgrade now for you, but down the line, it may end up cheaper overall since it will last so long.
>>
>>62277172
I just finished a build with a ryzen 3 and I've been streaming the witcher 3 maxed for hours on a 1060 6gb. I'm sure you could get that out of an i5 but for less than 200 dollars you could do a ryzen 3 and decent board combo.

>>
>>62277206

>>
>>62277175
Yes. There's MANY different types of fans. You can even get RGB fans now that can glow in your choice of 16.8 million colors via software.
I'm personally planning to use Cooler Master Master Fan Pro 120 RGB Air Pressure (wow, what a long fucking name) fans for my build. My choice wasn't just the RGB, or the fact the fans are compatible with my motherboard/RGB software choice, but also because the actual fanblades themselves are the same ones used on the stock Ryzen coolers.
That's my choice and my reasons though. You make your own.

ignore them. The B350M Mortar is just an mATX version of the much beloved full size ATX MSI B350 Tomahawk board.
MSI does lag behind the other board manufacturers for bios updates, but they do have the latest revisions out that fix 99% of the early teething problems with Ryzen. Just make sure your board has a bios with the AGESA update

Not sure if this belongs on /sqt/, but is there a way to limit my fps if it's not a setting in game. Not a serious gamer, so rocking a 1050, however I can see the fps jump around a bit at 1080p, anyway to cap it at 30 fps when playing games? I'd rather have a consistent fps

Opinions on my build? Also will I be able to play 1440p and 4k with no freezing ? I don't care so much for 60 fps on them just for them to be playable also I'm torn between a 7700k and ryzen 7 1700 and I'm about to buy a CPU so please tell me which should I Choose? I like the 7700k for the more fps in games but I like the 1700 for the cores and being able to stream better but the fps is kinda lower compared to the 7700k. Which one is the better buy guys?

Should I just buy a Ryzen or wait for Coffee Lake (built my pc in 2012, i5 2500k)

I'm going to be buying everything new except peripherals. Have had bad experience with AMD before...
>>
So, is it worth waiting for Coffee Lake if all I do is playing games?
I really wanted that sweet 1700 with the stock cooler, but I don't see any benefit for me if I just shitpost, play games and maybe do some of these multi threading shit, but an i5 8700k would do just fine, I guess.

I also have currently an i5-4460 and a 1060 6GB with a 1440@144 monitor, so I'll also get the next Gen's GPU and sell this one.

Reposted from the older thread.
>>
>>62279490
I'd say wait. 2 things may happen: 1. coffee lake is magic and is much better, (probably not) or it's nothing new just intel cpus with 6 cores 12 threads which can now compete with ryzen, so hopefully ryzen prices might go down a bit. In both cases you win. Also with overclocked 2500k you can still get through to wait for the coffee lake.
>>

See this, just my opinion. I don't see a reason to not wait. It's not like ryzens are gonna go out of stock or raise in prices like gpus. Just from my personal experience I'm happy I waited that 2 more months for ryzens even tho I also didn't want to trust amd.

>>

Fuck me, didn't see the post above.
Anyway, I'll just wait, maybe even for Ryzen 2, but I'm building two PCs for two friends, one can't really wait for nothing and the other probably can wait to Coffe Lake and go for the bib delid dude (i7-8700K).

I'll wait for the r7 2700 or whatever, it even sounds familiar to the 2500k/2600k.

But since it's a massive and temporary surge in demand, increasing production to respond to it would lose AMD tons of money.

>>62280188
You're choosing between 1600 and 7700k, not 1700.
The 7700k is better in outright performance for video games, the 1600 is better for multithread.
There's a webm floating around of both CPUs used to play a game while streaming, and the 1600 performs better there.
The 1600 is less expensive, and comes with a good stock cooler, so it's the better value of the two.

What are you going to do with that pc?
I would consider getting a good case, it really makes a difference.
You may as well go up to the Ryzen 1600, or just get the 1400.
Ryzen likes fast RAM. And is picky as to which types of RAM it will play nice with. Getting 2400MHz is limiting.
The 1050 is not a great card for video games.
>>
>>62281765
>https://it.pcpartpicker.com/list/KxRNM8
I'm guessing you're on real tight budget? I would still recommend better ram, it's just too good with ryzen. Other than that if you can spare something 1600 would be just better for not much more.

Only in gaymes that don't use many threads. The 1600 is a much better CPU overall, with 2 more cores and 4 more threads.
>>

A GTX 1060 6GB sounds like the ticket for you. Or an RX580 if you find that for cheaper.
The difference between the 1500X and 1600 isn't really in video games, at least for now. The 1600 has two more cores, so in productivity application, or doing multiple demanding tasks at the same time, it will perform better than a 1500X.

There are no customs to pay for countries within the EU, and no currency conversion costs if both countries use €. The VAT will change from the 19% from Germany to 22% from Italy so the total will be 3% higher in the end. There will be normal shipping costs in some cases (6-9€ usually), you might get away with that if you have amazon prime (the trial is free for the first month). You might have to pay more for shipping if the order isn't shipped directly from amazon, if you want to avoid that pick a motherboard sold and shipped from amazon. You can also use the same amazon account, it will already have all the data of the .it account.

Need help choosing an x370 motherbaord. right now ive got it narrowed down to a few but i cant tell much differnece

ASRock Fatal1ty X370 Professional Gaming
ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero
MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon

all 3 brands seem decent. i cant tell a difference though, what do you think?
>>
>>62283592
You don't need X370. Get an Asus B350 or MSI's B350 Gaming Pro Carbon.

I always liked asus's Bios/uefis more than msi's

g502 is quite popular and good mouse, I have one and it's been great with fingertip grip. Be warned though, it's heavy and large so you might want to look at g402 instead. Would be best if you could try them out at a store before buying.

>but are they PWM
obviously not. how are you going to do pwm on 3 pins?
>>
>>62284000
>how are you going to do pwm on 3 pins?
You can't, which is why I was asking if there is anything I can do to get PWM on more fans than just my CPU.
Does the "Reserve" on that SYS_FAN2 header mean "dead pin"?
Is there absolutely ANYTHING I can do to get some kind of speed management on the case fans instead of have 4 case fans blowing 80CFM 24/7? I thought a spliter/hub might work if SYS_FAN2 was actually PWM, but if it isn't then I don't know. Not trying to be an ass; just curious.

I have to replace the 1 fan on my 212 evo because it's clicking, and I was planning on doing it with a splitter on the CPU header so I have push/pull, but at this point I don't know if that's possible either.

Thoughts on my (first ever) NAS build? I want it to hold all my media so I can access it from my other PCs and to store some backups on it. I have gigabit ethernet in almost every room so wireless is not important and if I ever needed it (I won't) theres usb.
The case fits 8 drives, I'll probably use most bays later by getting a PCIe->sata card for 4 more ports because I don't wanna spend 400€ more on a professional Asrock mobo with 12 sata ports that then has a Intel Atom in it.
Which OS should I use?
Forgot to mark the PSU as purchased btw, still ahve that from my main itx build.

using psu and case from current build. mobo is for a lot of hard drives. i dont care much about the gpu since im more doing cpu intensive stuff. the cpu is on special right now which is why im going for it and the mobo has too many features to pass up on (10 sata ports, on board wifi, 5 gigabit and gigabit lan). it practically pays for itself vs vuying expansion cards

Bought GPU, PSU and RAM already, also using SSD from my laptop.

I'm not sure about case, mobo and HDD. I don't plan going for SLI or some extreme overclocking (hopefully 3,8/3,9 max on 1600) so I guess there's no point in getting X370 mobo. As for the case I guess it's between NZXT S340 and Fractal Define C, Fractal costs ~10$ more but seems better?

And I have no idea which HDD, which vendor is the least shit these days?

Is there any point in going from a Thinkpad X230 with a Intel i5 3320M to the Athlon X4 950 and then upgrade when Zen 2 comes or will it basically perform the same?

I keep my Thinkpad docked at my desk with an eGPU setup so I might as well just replace it with a desktop, problem is that my budget is tight.

I don't really know if I want to get the Ryzen 3 1200 now because I want to upgrade down the line to at least a 1600 for video/photography editing and music production as well as vidya. I do that on my Thinkpad now with decent results and the Athlon will be at least a little bit better.

The GPU was too old (RX 270X) so I thought maybe it was time to replace everything. I already have the GTX and everything seems to work pretty well actually on a old i3 from 2015.

It's hard to tell. After looking at some tests, in single core tasks ryzen 5s won't do much better (sometimes even worse) than pentiums g4560 or kaby lake i3s.
And there's not that much difference between kaby lake and haswell cpus.
